Drones and The Future of Food Delivery Services by Dr. Shawun Passley via 360 MAGAZINE.

Drones and The Future of Food Delivery Services

The Capabilities of Using Drones in a Food Industry Supply Chain

Are Drones the Solution to the Restaurant World’s Delivery Problem?

When the COVID-19 pandemic trapped diners at home, many restaurants survived by ramping up their delivery services. Delivery providers like DoorDash and Uber Eats allowed restaurants to continue serving their clients even when their dining rooms were closed. What few restaurants expected, however, was that the increased volume of food delivery would be a trend that continued beyond Covid.

Recent stats show that the spike in food delivery that started during the pandemic has not gone away. Diners have apparently decided that they like the convenience of having restaurant meals delivered to their homes or offices. For restaurants, however, the trend is not so convenient, primarily because delivery is expensive.

According to research from McKinsey, the average service commission that restaurants are paying to delivery services is between 15-20%. During the pandemic, those fees were seen as the cost of survival. Post-pandemic, paying those fees — or passing them on to their customers — is something most restaurants do not consider to be sustainable.

Some restaurants looking for a better way to serve their delivery customers are looking to drones as a solution. Drones, sometimes referred to as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), are being used in a wide variety of applications, from job-site surveillance to search-and-rescue to inventory inspection. For restaurants, drones promise a more scalable, affordable, and sustainable solution to the growing demand for food delivery.

The basics of drone delivery

The benefits that drones promise to the world of delivery are easy to appreciate, starting with how readily they can scale when demand for delivery increases. In a traditional model, more delivery volume means more drivers. By leveraging GPS, AI, and machine learning, drones can fly automated flight paths. In essence, one drone “driver” can manage multiple delivery vehicles. With the most advanced software systems, the destination provided in the food order is the only “driver” needed to get the customer his or her food.

The financial implications of driverless delivery are huge for the food service industry. Drone delivery does away with fees paid to traditional delivery drivers, as well as expenses related to driver recruiting, driver management, and vehicle insurance. Overall, drone delivery presents a much more sustainable model when it comes to the financial investment.

Drones also allow for quicker delivery times. With few exceptions, drones can take a direct path from a delivery’s source to its destination — they are not delayed by stop lights or traffic jams. In the food industry, where the quality of hot dishes decreases with each passing minute, the accelerated delivery times that drones empower is a major benefit.

Gasoline costs, which are a major variable that traditional delivery models must take into account, are not an issue with drones since the vast majority of drones are powered by rechargeable batteries. Once the initial investment is made, drones continue to deliver with minimal investment.

Challenges that must be overcome

Meeting regulatory requirements has been a challenge to drone development from its early days. To take flight, drones must comply with the requirements put forth by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This means meeting safety guidelines as well as charting flight paths that avoid no-fly zones.

Rules recently issued by the FAA make it easier for businesses to use drones for deliveries. The rules, which were issued in January 2021, expand drone capabilities by allowing for routine operations of drones over people and at night. Previously, such use required a FAA waiver. Upon announcing the new rules, the FAA said that they serve as one of a number of regulatory steps that will allow for growth in the use of drone technology.

Restaurants can avoid taking on the burdens associated with FAA requirements by working with companies that provide what has come to be known as Drone as a Service (DaaS). Such companies engineer drone systems that facilitate the required delivery service while ensuring that all mandatory regulatory requirements are met. Utilizing DaaS allows restaurants a high degree of flexibility and scalability without requiring them to develop any expertise in drone technology or make an investment in equipment.

Models for drone food delivery

Using drones as a means to get food orders from restaurants directly to customers is a model that has already proven to be effective. The town of Oranmore in Ireland, for instance, made headlines in 2021 when local cafes began using drone delivery to facilitate coffee deliveries. The drones, which were launched from a centrally located rooftop, lowered orders to their destinations on a cable while hovering at a height of 80 feet. The system facilitated deliveries within two minutes.

In the US, drones are being used by restaurants in a number of cities. In Holly Springs, North Caroline, for example, drone delivery is in use by nearly two dozen restaurants. The drones being used travel at 33 miles an hour, empowering deliveries in less than 5 minutes.

Another potential model for using drones as delivery vehicles involves facilitating the movement of orders from restaurants to an intermediary location where they can be picked up by last-mile delivery drivers. This model could prove to be effective for delivering to multi-family dwellings where those who place orders do not have an available landing zone. Drones could deposit orders to a rooftop staging area or other location where onsite delivery personnel could pick them up and manage the final phase of the trip.

Another model that restaurants have explored involves using drones as wait staff within the restaurant. Similar to how drones can be used to move inventory within warehouses, this model utilizes drones to cut down on the need for human resources. It has the potential to deliver meals from the kitchen to servers in the dining room, or to deliver meals directly to diners at their table, and has already been tested delivering food orders to attendees at sporting events.

The growth of demand for delivery options is something that restaurants that want to remain competitive cannot ignore. At the same time, a better model for addressing the added expenses of delivery must be identified.

Drones technology addresses both issues, empowering a more efficient delivery system that is also more cost effective. In 2023 and beyond, drone delivery promises to become a top competitive advantage in the restaurant field.

ABOUT DUKE DEUCE:

Crunk music was never dead, but Memphis rapper Duke Deuce has taken it upon himself to inspire a new generation to tear the club up. With inexhaustible energy and a booming voice, he’s reclaiming the ecstatic subgenre for his hometown, making music as grim as it is gleeful, and turning up all the while. Rapping about harrowing realities and detailing the benefits of his hard-won success, Duke has reached millions of fans who dig his music’s intensity as much as they do the playful dancing (a.k.a. gangsta walking) he does in his videos. With each release, Duke makes the case that crunk is more than music. It’s a way of life. He often bellows his signature ad-lib “WHAT THE FUCK?!” with the force of a wrecking ball or rather, the force of his own breakout single, “Crunk Ain’t Dead,” a high-octane anthem that earned a remix featuring a few legends of the genre: Lil Jon, Juicy J, and Project Pat. Since signing with Quality Control Music, Duke hasn’t let his foot off the gas, releasing Memphis Massacre [2018], Memphis Massacre 2 [2020], Duke Nukem [2021] and Crunkstar [2022], the latter of which cemented his signature ‘crunk-rock’ sound with breakout single “Just Say That,” powered by guest features from Glorilla and Quavo. Duke continues his worldwide takeover with the release of his latest mixtape offering Memphis Massacre III [Quality Control Music/Motown Records/Made Men Movement].

BLUE-CHIP FERRARIS HEAD TO RM SOTHEBY’S MIAMI AUCTION THIS DECEMBER

The incredible offerings include a low-mileage F40, a 625-mile F50, the iconic Enzo, and a new-in-crate Enzo motor

  • Once-in-a-lifetime, two-owner F50 with 625 miles. Possibly the best extant example of Maranello’s important 50th anniversary model
  • A beautifully presented Ferrari Enzo displaying 11,870 miles at time of cataloguing
  • Ferrari F40 displaying just 2,736 miles and believed to feature all of the factory-applied paintwork, with initial ownership by the noted and highly influential Paul Allen
  • Unobtainable piece of Ferrari history; a rare opportunity to acquire a new old stock Ferrari Enzo replacement unit

A remarkable assembly of Ferraris is set to join the roster of modern classics, supercars, and luxury automobiles in South Florida. The sale is limited to just over 55 automobiles and will take place at the 1111 Lincoln building, an “above-the-horizon” space overlooking Miami on 10 December.

Ferrari Highlights

1990 Ferrari F40 – Currently displaying just 2,736 miles, this incredibly original F40 is believed to feature all of the factory-applied paintwork and continues to retain all of its matching-numbers mechanical equipment, just as it was when certified by Ferrari Classiche 14 years ago. The breathtaking berlinetta is well documented with the Massini history report, warranty booklet, prior titles, bills of sale, and a service invoice. It is also accompanied by owner’s manuals in the proper pouch, tools, and the Schedoni fitted luggage. Opportunities to acquire such a finely preserved and pure early example of the venerable F40 do not often surface, and this fantastic car claims the additional provenance of initial ownership by the noted and highly influential Paul Allen (Estimate: $3,000,000 – $3,500,000).

1995 Ferrari F50  Currently displaying a remarkably low 625 miles of driving use, this splendid F50 is accompanied by a factory-issued set of fitted luggage, and the proper flight case for the removable hardtop. It is also documented with a 1995 certificate of origin, factory purchase order, bill of lading for export to Singapore, service invoices from Norwood Auto Italia, a history by Marcel Massini, and the Ferrari Classiche Red Book. To come across an immaculate two-owner F50 with such low mileage presents a very rare opportunity and this car is probably the best-condition example of Maranello’s important 50th anniversary model that one might ever encounter (Estimate: $5,500,000 – $6,500,000).

2003 Ferrari Enzo  Just one of 111 examples specified for the US market, and 498 examples built, this elegant Enzo was ideally maintained by Ferrari dealerships throughout its lifetime. This chassis was displayed at the 2004 Concorso Italiano and is accompanied by luggage and tool roll. A beautifully presented example of Maranello’s iconic millennial hypercar, displaying 11,870 miles at time of cataloguing. Certified by Ferrari Classiche in 2020, the estimate for this Enzo is $3,250,000 – $3,750,000.

Ferrari Enzo Engine – An otherwise unobtainable piece of Ferrari history; a rare opportunity to acquire a new old stock replacement unit from one of the marque’s flagship models. This once-in-a-lifetime Ferrari Enzo engine is still in its factory crate. It is a complete engine with inlets, airbox, ancillaries, and engine loom. If mounted for display, the engine could be used as a fantastic centerpiece in any collection.

Reebok × ALL GONE & PAPERBOY Club C “AGPPB”

Available Exclusively at ComplexCon, November 19

At ComplexCon, Long Beach, 2022, Michael Dupouy, author of the legendary book saga “ALL GONE, The Finest of Street Culture”, celebrates 16 years of the iconic work with a photographic retrospective: “ALL GONE, curated archives, 2006-2021”. In honor of the occasion, in collaboration with famed restaurant brand Paperboy, a hyper-limited pair of Reebok’s iconic Club C ($150) sneaker will be unveiled and made available for purchase on Saturday, November 19, exclusively from ALL GONE’s ComplexCon booth.

Conceived jointly by Michael Dupouy and James Dridi (founder of Paperboy), the Reebok Club C “AGPPB” (All Gone PaPerBoy) is limited to just 150 pairs.

“A legendary model, an icon of sneaker culture in the broadest sense, a product that is for everyone, easy to wear, for all styles, and that has survived all the fashions and trends, Reebok’s Club C is a true ideal of all wardrobes,” commented Dupouy. “So, the idea was to create something simple and honest, to stick to the origins of the product and not change its DNA. And frankly, with Paperboy, we’re just thrilled to bring a bit of French freshness to American soil, to Los Angeles.”

Resolutely clean and vintage, the all-white pair with pale pink accents is reminiscent of ALL GONE’s signature website colors and its all-pink photo retrospective on display at ComplexCon, Long Beach. The elevated design offers an ultra-premium leather upper with ALL GONE and Paperboy logos and logo lockups appearing throughout. Most notably, the ALL GONE logo is embroidered within Club C’s iconic window box in white-on-white, as if it’s just disappeared (akin to the collectors’ products spread across its pages to which the book has paid tribute for 16 years).

This union between three protagonists, ALL GONE, Paperboy, and Reebok is organic, natural, honest, and sincere, resulting in one of the rarest Reebok limited sneaker releases of the year.

To purchase, consumers can visit ALL GONE’s ComplexCon experience on Saturday, November 19, booth B35. The launch will take place in the presence of Michael Dupouy and James Dridi, who will be on site chatting with attendees and signing select pairs.

NOTE: Dupouy, with Colette, previously collaborated with Reebok on its Pump model in 2009 for the shoe’s 20th anniversary, and then on the Instapump Fury in 2014. James Dridi’s Paperboy also collaborated with Reebok and Beams in 2021 on the Club C 85 and Club C Legacy.

About Jacquees:

A thirteen-year grind ushered Jacquees into the forefront of modern R&B with multiple platinum records, billions of streams, and sold-out shows everywhere. Behind all of those flashy vocal runs and silky bedroom jams, you’ll find the same humble music-obsessed vocalist who first picked up a microphone at 9-years-old in his hometown of Decatur, GA.
He’s come a long way too. After the success of his independent 19 EP in 2014, he inked a deal with Cash Money Records and cultivated a signature style steeped in throwback soul with the right amount of 21st century sizzle. His 2018 full-length debut4275 scored a gold certification from the RIAA and boasted the double-platinum “B.E.D.” and platinum “At The Club” featuring Dej Loaf. A year later in 2019, he returned with King of R&B, which yielded the gold-selling “Your Peace” featuring Lil Baby. Not to mention, he teamed up with Cash Money Records Co-Founder and iconic rapper Birdman for the collaborative Lost At Sea [2016] and Lost At Sea 2 [2018]. He also closed out 2019 with the Christmas in Decatur EP.

Now, he’s turning the page on the next chapter of his career.
“It’s a new chapter, for sure,” he affirms. “I’m rebranding by getting back to how I started. I’m having fun again. Of course, it’s still a job, but I’m having a really good time. I took a break from everything for a minute and I’m stepping out now.”

About Cash Money Records:

Since 1991, Brothers Bryan “Birdman” Williams aka “Baby” and Ronald “Slim”Williams have built Cash Money Records into a legendary force in the music industry. Through tireless devotion and an unparalleled work ethic, the duo founded the legendary label in the New Orleans housing projects and elevated it into a multi-million-dollar empire and cultural tastemaker. Not only is the company revered as an iconic and enduring global street brand, it’s become the most successful independent record label in America boasting a bevy of chart-dominating, multi-platinum artists and Grammy Award winners and cumulative sales over 100 million albums worldwide, the roster includes JacqueesGSO Phat, Eighty8, Juvenile, Rublow and more. The label also houses Lil Wayne‘s imprint Young Money Entertainment (Drake and Nicki Minaj) as well as a publishing arm Cash Money ContentCash Money Records is distributed by Republic Records, a division of Universal Music Group, the world’s largest music company.

ZEITZ MOCAA × GUCCI – WHEN WE SEE US

ZEITZ MOCAA ANNOUNCES FULL ARTIST LINE-UP FOR HIGHLY ANTICIPATED EXHIBITION

WHEN WE SEE US: A CENTURY OF BLACK FIGURATION IN PAINTING

The survey exhibition features nearly 200 artworks from 154 artists

The exhibition, supported by Gucci, opens on 20 November 2022

This weekend, Zeitz MOCAA will be a flurry of activity as it not only presents its fundraising Gala, sponsored by Gucci, but also unveils a new survey exhibition that has been years in the making. Titled When We See Us: A Century of Black Figuration in Painting, the exhibition places a focus on painting, specifically works produced from the 1920s to the present.

“Over the last decade, figurative painting by Black artists has risen to a new prominence in contemporary art,” says Koyo Kouoh, Executive Director and Chief Curator at Zeitz MOCAA. “There is no better time for an exhibition of this nature, one that connects these practices and reveals the deeper historic contexts and networks of complex and underrepresented artistic genealogies that stem from African and Black modernities; an exhibition that demonstrates how multiple generations of such artists have revelled and critically engaged in projecting various notions of Blackness and Africanity.”

When We See Us: A Century of Black Figuration in Painting comprises an exhibition, publication and discursive programming that explores Black self-representation and celebrates global Black subjectivities and Black consciousness from pan-African and pan-diasporic perspectives. It boldly brings together artworks from the last 100 years, by Black artists working globally, into dialogue with leading Black thinkers, writers and poets who are active today.

The exhibition furthermore celebrates how artists from Africa and its diaspora have imagined, positioned, memorialised and asserted African and African-descent experiences. It contributes to critical discourse on African and Black liberation, intellectual and philosophical movements. The title of the exhibition is inspired by Ava DuVernay’s When They See Us, a 2019 miniseries. Flipping ‘they’ to ‘we’ allows for a dialectical shift that centres the conversation in a differential perspective of self-writing as theorised by Professor Achille Mbembe

The exhibition, designed by Wolff Architects, features nearly 200 works of art by 154 artists from 28 countries, with the artworks loaned from 73 institutional and private lenders located in 26 countries. When We See Us celebrates the resilience, essence and political charge of Black joy. The exhibition is organised around six themes — The Everyday, Joy and Revelry, Repose, Sensuality, Spirituality, and Triumph and Emancipation. It is furthermore accompanied by a sonic translation, compiled by South African composer and sound artist Neo Muyanga.

Tandazani Dhlakama, the exhibition’s co-curator and Assistant Curator at Zeitz MOCAA, says: “This exhibition is a true reflection of the historic contexts of African and Black existence, with the oldest artist in the exhibition born in 1886 and the youngest in 1999. It amplifies a historical continuum of self-representation while highlighting important contributions towards a previously understated canon. Most importantly, it explores a broad range of artistic lineages, art schools and movements — and brings together a myriad of artists and their practice in dialogue for the first time (see full list of artists below).”

Published to coincide with the exhibition is a hardcover poetic catalogue by Thames and Hudson, in collaboration with Zeitz MOCAA, and edited by Koyo Kouoh. Richly illustrated with all the works selected for the exhibition, it includes a contextual essay by Dhlakama and four specially commissioned texts by acclaimed female writers Ken Bugul (Senegal), Maaza Mengiste (Ethiopia), Robin Coste Lewis (United States) and Bill Kouelany (Republic of Congo). In addition to the publication, on sale from 18 November at Zeitz MOCAA Shop and shop.zeitzmocaa.museum, the curatorial team have collaborated with the museum’s retail partner on a limited range of exhibition-related items, including T-shirts, tote bags and more.

Conceived in collaboration with the Institute for Humanities in Africa (HUMA) at the University of Cape Town (UCT), a parallel discursive programme provides theoretical framings of the project and is presented as a year-long, multi-vocal webinar series. The series brings together thought leaders from the continent and its thriving diaspora to address topics around global Black subjectivity and Black representation from the premise of artistic production and into the topical considerations relevant today.

Coordinated by Zeitz MOCAA Assistant Curator Thato Mogotsi, previous discussion topics included The Poetics of Black Figuration, Defining the ‘We’ & the ‘Us’, A Century of Black Figuration as Representation of Self and Black is Beautiful: Pan-Africanism & the Afropolitan Impulse in Contemporary Art, amongst others. Previous participants have included Prof Huey Copeland, Kimberly Drew, Keyna Eleison, Thelma Golden, Dr Felwine Sarr and Athi Mongozeleli Joja. The webinars are archived on the museum’s YouTube channel, with the next one taking place on Tuesday, 29 November.

The opening of the exhibition is preceded by the 2022 Zeitz MOCAA Gala Dinner + Party, supported by Gucci, acting as a catalyst and inspiration for the Gala’s theme of Art & Opulence. The Gala is Zeitz MOCAA’s largest development event of the year and its proceeds yield approximately 30% of the museum’s annual exhibitions and education budget. The event is essential to the institution’s mission of promoting art education and community engagement, and is further supported by the V&A Waterfront, Radisson Hotel Group, the Mail & Guardian, YourLuxury Africa, Terre Paisable, Pernod Ricard and Hidden Valley Wines, with BMW South Africa as the official vehicle partner.

The exhibition and accompanying publication have been made possible through the generous support of our presenting sponsor, Gucci.

When We See Us: A Century of Black Figuration in Painting will open to the public on Sunday, 20 November 2022. The Zeitz MOCAA Gala Dinner + Party, supported by Gucci and themed Art + Opulence, takes place on Saturday, 19 November 2022. For more information on the Gala and to purchase tickets, visit zeitzmocaa.museum or click here.

Zeitz MOCAA’s curatorial and exhibition programming is proudly supported by Gucci. All proceeds from the annual fundraising event go towards supporting curatorial research and education programming at Zeitz MOCAA.
