Benee – New World Tour

Today, New Zealand’s platinum sensation BENEE announces her first foray out into the world since the pandemic struck with her 2022 headline world tour. The North American leg kicks off on May 31st in Montreal and makes stops in Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and more—see the full list of dates below and HERE The 21-year-old artist broke through with “Supalonely,” her global hit with nearly 4 billion streams, and like many artists has had to wait for a chance to tour outside of her home country again. Next year’s tour will be BENEE’s first time playing shows in North America since 2019.

Tickets will go on sale this week, beginning with a fan pre-sale tomorrow, November 16th at 9AM local time, Spotify pre-sale on Wednesday, November 17th at 9AM local time, promoter pre-sale on Thursday, November 18th at 9AM local time, and general on-sale on Friday, November 19th at 9AM local time.

“I am beyond excited to announce that my WORLD TOUR KICKS OFF next year!!!!!!!!!,” says BENEE. “It’s been such a long time coming & we’ve lived through a lot in these weird times but shows starting up again has rly got everyone sosososodo happyyy!!!! I can’t wait to get back out there & meet all of u and play a bunch of new musiiiiiicccc!!”

“I AM SO READY TO TOUR!!,” she exclaims. “Doing shows with my band is the best thing and I have missed it so badly this year. Waiting, rescheduling, waiting again has been incredibly difficult.”

BENEE recently made a momentous return with her new single “Doesn’t Matter,” her first new music since 2020’s debut album Hey u x. The song is a deeply revealing track that reflects the singer’s journey through the emotional clatter of 2021. The track is off to a flying start, streaming over 1 million times in its first week and receiving praise from the likes of Billboard, Entertainment Tonight, Ones To Watch, PAPER Magazine, Stereogum, UPROXX, V Magazine, and many more.

BENEE’s dreamy alt-pop mixes her deeply heartfelt reflections on life in suburban Auckland, New Zealand with offbeat and often whimsical lyrical encounters with zombies and snails, all produced with a technicolor ear for cooked beats and unpredictable hooks. Hey u x is a vibrant musical world with guests ranging from Grimes and Lily Allen to Gus Dapperton and Muroki (another New Zealand teen BENEE has since signed to her own label, Olive). It was listed as one of Billboard’s “25 Best Pop Albums of 2020,” noting that BENEE “contemplates the woes of Gen Z with a keen ear for choruses and arrangements that oscillate between indie rock and hyperpop.” Stereogum praised its “quirky but impeccably produced pop music” and Vogue called it “13 tracks of heavenly indie-alt-pop.”

A forthcoming EP release leads into plans for 2022 with the thing that excites BENEE the most—a hefty touring schedule that will bring her live show to adoring fans around the world at last.

Tenth Annual Municipal Equality Index Released

In tenth edition of Municipal Equality Index, a record-setting number of 100 point scores and the highest-ever national average show that localities continue to lead the way on LGBTQ+ inclusion

Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, the educational arm of the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) civil rights organization, in partnership with The Equality Federation, released its 10th annual Municipal Equality Index (MEI), the only nationwide assessment of LGBTQ+ equality regarding municipal policies, laws and services. This year, a record-breaking 110 cities earned the highest score of 100, which is up from 11 in 2012, the MEI’s inaugural year, illustrating the striking advancements municipalities have made over the past 10 years.

In North Carolina, Chapel Hill, Charlotte, Durham, Greensboro and Winston-Salem are setting a true example for equality and inclusion by earning one of HRC’s MEI “All-Star” designations. MEI All-Stars earned over 85 points despite hailing from a state without statewide non-discrimination statutes that explicitly include sexual orientation and gender identity. The average score for cities in North Carolina is 71 out of 100 points, which falls 4 above the national average of 67.

“LGBTQ+ people are everywhere—in every city, county and ZIP code. These All-Star cities are blazing the path forward for equality and fighting back against extreme unrelenting attacks on the LGBTQ+ community.” said JoDee Winterhof, Human Rights Campaign Senior Vice President of Policy and Political Affairs. “This year, state-wide lawmakers have zeroed in on attacking transgender and non-binary children—for no clear reason other than bigotry and hate. Adopting the policies outlined in the MEI have not only fostered safer and more inclusive communities, but it has also spurred economic growth by showcasing to residents, visitors and outside investors that their city is open to everyone.”

“In reflecting on the Municipal Equality Index’s 10-year history, it feels as though these past few years have been the most challenging, and yet the most critical, to advancing LGBTQ+ equality. Despite the increasing attacks we are seeing on transgender youth in state legislatures, the important work to advance protections for LGBTQ+ people continues at the local level,” said Fran Hutchins, Executive Director of Equality Federation Institute. “As we face the upcoming attacks by opponents of equality, we know the state-based movement is stronger than ever and ready to fight for the millions of LGBTQ+ Americans who need us in the towns and cities across this country.”

The report also contains an issue brief for policymakers that covers how municipalities can support transgender and non-binary individuals, as well as the types of challenges they face, ways that a city can support them, and guidance on forming an anti-transgender and non-binary violence prevention task force. Additionally, the report includes HRC’s Pledge for Local Elected Leaders to End Violence Against Black and Brown Transgender Women.

“For 10 incredible years, the MEI has helped guide, shape and inspire more inclusive laws and policies in cities of all sizes in all parts of the country,” said Cathryn Oakley, State Legislative Director & Senior Counsel for the Human Rights Campaign and Founding Author of the Municipal Equality Index. “This program is one of the key ways HRC is able to impact the daily lives of our members, supporters and allies. Being able to personally witness these communities continue to push themselves to better serve their LGBTQ+ communities over the years has been one of my greatest joys. I am incredibly proud of this project and of the MEI team who have made this report a vehicle of enduring change and of our partners in communities around the country who have enthusiastically embraced its possibilities.”

Other significant findings from the 2021 MEI include:

  • This year, 181 cities have transgender-inclusive healthcare benefits for municipal employees—up from 179 in 2020, despite more rigorous standards this year, and only five at the start of the MEI.
  • The national city score average jumped to an all-time high of 67 points, up from 64 last year and 59 in 2012, marking both the fourth consecutive year of national average increases as well as the highest year-over-year national average growth ever.
    • As a marker of the change that ten editions of the MEI have brought, cities rated by the MEI in 2012 averaged 59 points then; in 2021, those cities averaged 85 points.
    • 11 cities scored 100 points in the 2012 MEI; ten times that number did so in 2021, the tenth edition.
  • Cities around the country saw progress, with every region of the country seeing a higher average score than last year.
  • 43 municipalities have anti-conversion therapy ordinances in states with no state-level protections, up from 38 last year.
  • The tenth edition of the MEI tells a story of sustained, transformational growth in cities of every size in every region of the country.  While state legislatures attacked LGBTQ+ people in a historically difficult legislative session, cities focused on solving actual problems.

Even though local leaders continue to pave the way forward on equality, there remains an unacceptable patchwork of laws for LGBTQ+ people across the country. This reinforces the need for the federal Equality Act that would provide consistent and explicit non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ+ people across key areas of life, including employment, housing, credit, education, public spaces and services, federally funded programs, and jury service.

The MEI rated 506 cities including the 50 state capitals, the 200 largest cities in the U.S., the five largest cities or municipalities in each state, the cities home to the state’s two largest public universities, the 75 municipalities that have high proportions of same-sex couples and 98 cities selected by HRC and Equality Federation state group members and supporters. It assesses each city on 49 criteria covering citywide non-discrimination protections, policies for municipal employees, city services, law enforcement and the city’s leadership on LGBTQ+ equality.

Tips For Smart Home Devices During Thanksgiving

November brings a great amount of excitement in the air – football season is in full swing, basketball is about to start, and Thanksgiving and holiday shopping are right around the corner.

Of course, that also means half of America’s football teams are already out of contention, and people have already begun to stress about Thanksgiving planning and their holiday shopping.

Fortunately, with all the “smart home” devices now at our disposal, everyone’s Thanksgiving Day preparation and cooking this year is sure to be “smarter” than ever. From smart thermometers and smart vacuums to Amazon Echo and Alexa devices, Thanksgiving Day prep and cooking should be a snap.

Smart Devices Can Still Cause Frustrations

Unfortunately, a house filled with smart devices doesn’t necessarily make our cooking experience that much smarter. According to a recent survey, 74% of connected consumers have experienced technical challenges in the past year. Even before the pandemic, 36% of smart device owners said they haven’t connected their product because they don’t know how. In addition to product issues, 55% of respondents said their internet speeds have been slower since the pandemic began.

Just having a connected home doesn’t always mean it’s smooth sailing for smart device connectivity. Here are a few tips from personal tech support experts to keep technical frustrations to a minimum on Turkey Day.

  •   Use your Amazon Echo Show to view your favorite recipes. Pause, playback, etc. and see the recipe on the screen as you go. Need other food ideas, just ask Alexa for top Thanksgiving recipes!
  •   Make shopping for your groceries simpler with free apps like AnyList. Just download the app, register, and then start creating custom lists. Want to share your list with a family member or friend, no problem, that’s easy, just send the list from within the app to their email address. Once they click the link and download the app they will be able to see your list and add, change, delete items.
  •   Want to put a little pep in your meal prep? Use your smart speaker to play your favorite holiday songs while you’re cooking. Did you know that if you are an Amazon Prime member you get access to Amazon Music for free? Just ask Alexa to play your favorite tunes like “Alexa, play Feeling Thankful music.”  Also, did you know that iHeart Radio is free as well? Just download and register the app, make sure to add the “skill” to your Amazon Alexa app to let it work with iHeart Radio.  Try “Alexa, play iHeart Christmas Rock.”
  •   Want to start decorating for holidays early? Pick up some smart plugs and connect your holiday lights, tree and other electric devices and then create a “group” like “Holidays inside”.  Then, use your Google or Amazon device for voice commands like “Hey Google, turn on Holidays inside” and watch as all your gadgets turn on.
  •   Did you know you can use your Google Home device, your Amazon Echo device, or your iPhone Siri service to set multiple timers to keep track of your food cook times?  Try “Alexa, remind me in 15 minutes to check the turkey.
  •   Made a mess while cooking and too tired to clean it up yourself, use your smart vacuum to do some post-Thanksgiving cooking cleanup. You can create custom rooms with your iRobot app and then just send it directly to the room that needs a little extra tidying up.

Planning Can Save Frustration

Plan and make sure all your home’s smart devices are connected and working properly by contacting your tech support specialist home consultants ahead of the big day. You can also use a Wi-Fi speed check to make sure your Internet network speed is running at an optimal level when more family members begin to arrive and there are even more devices in the home running off your Wi-Fi. What’s more, you’ll want to check and make sure all your smart devices used in the kitchen are near the internet router, or if they are too far away there are always solutions like mesh routers and new Wi-Fi 6 routers that can extend your Wi-Fi range. Remember, slower internet speeds don’t always mean it’s your internet service provider’s fault.

Julio Macias & Michaela Jae Rodriguez –LATINA Magazine

Michaela Jaé Rodriguez and Julio Macias are LATINA’s latest cover stars. MJ, the multi-hyphenate talent makes history again as LATINA’s first-ever trans cover star and Julio Macias graces his first-ever cover. The dual cover feature celebrates two rising figures in Hollywood that are paving the way for the new generation of Latinx talent in the entertainment industry. LATINA is committed to amplifying the diverse voices across all spaces, championing the next generation of Latinx creatives.

See Rising Mexican American actor Julio Macias‘s cover HERE.

Macias knew early in his career that he did not want to become pigeon-holed into roles that were placed in films to depict hostility and inflict fear. Macias gained a lot of gratitude and admiration after starring in the character of Oscar Diaz, a tough, East LA cholo that goes by “Spooky” and is committed to guarding his younger brother on the Netflix show “On My Block.” Macias said goodbye to the life-altering character in October. Oscar was able to shed light on and represent numerous Chicano fans that saw themselves in the character.

Macias has continued to share his experience of being a Mexican American in the entertainment industry. He continues to discuss themes surrounding his journey of immigrating to the US, the process of adapting to American culture and just the overall challenges that he’s had to face from his childhood to the present. When discussing the entertainment industry, Macias states “in retrospect, I look at it and I’m like, wow, the community as a whole wasn’t diverse enough for me to feel comfortable easing into it. It was very much, adapt or be an outsider.”

While chatting with Laura Sanchez on his path to where he is today, he reveals an experience from when he was cast in the Latino Theater Co.’s production of “A Mexican Trilogy,” written by Evelina Fernandez and directed by Jose Luis Valenzuela. Part of the production for “A Mexican Trilogy” was compromised of Chicano players, and this permitted Macias to discover more about his culture. The experience allowed for him to learn more about his culture that he hadn’t while growing up. He states, “I consider myself part of the Chicano culture…I want to teach it, I want to be a part of it and hold it truthfully. And even though I’ve never necessarily felt like an outsider, I understand that people still see me as an outsider, so how can I bridge that gap?”

Starring in LATINA’s surprise second cover, this is, too, Macias’ first cover moment. The dual cover was led by Latina’s Chief Content Officer, Camila Legaspi. Legaspi aimed to highlight innovators and rising forces in television. Legaspi discusses Macias, stating “”LATINA continues to amplify diverse individuals across all industries and it’s really exciting to have Julio Macias as our surprise dual cover star. He is an incredible rising talent in Hollywood and we are proud to highlight the next generation of creatives.”

Earlier this year, the beloved actress, singer, and activist Michaela Jaé Rodriguez smashed the glass ceiling by becoming the first trans actor nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her work on Pose. The multi-hyphenate talent makes history again as LATINA’s first-ever trans cover star.

Themed around Michaela Jaé Rodriguez’s ability to tell stories and real-life role both on and off-screen as a protector, the rising force opens up about her journey breaking into the industry, repping her hometown in Newark, NJ, and her Afro-Latinx identity, “One thing that I learned as an Afro-Latina, is that I should never, ever, ever be afraid — which I never was — but it was always instilled in me, to never be afraid of your heritage.”

See Michaela Jaé Rodriguez’s cover HERE.

Michaela Jaé reflects deeply on her Emmy achievement: “I feel like it was an ode to my ancestors on how hard they had to fight within the trans community. I feel like it was also an ode to my Latino and Black ancestors who never got a chance to see, you know, the ones thrive before them or see the ones thrive after them.”  And how she sees her beloved character, Blanca, as an inspiration. “I had my mother, I had my father, I had my second dad. I had the LGBTQIA community. I had all of those beautiful opportunities to be loved on. Blanca had none of that, and yet she still created it.”

It’s no surprise that the wunderkind has Hollywood and now the music industry buzzing. The self-proclaimed “regular girl from Newark” has captured the hearts of many and along the way has brought marginalized voices to the forefront.

Examining how her family support system, her Afro-Boricua identity, and her deep desire to entertain, have all intertwined beautifully in her life, LATINA uncovers that Ms. Rodriguez’s family is the life force that elevates and guards her, especially her mother. “She celebrates and embraces all of her intersections: Black, Latina, Puerto Rican, a Newarker; a performer, a woman, and a trans girl; all fluidly.”

Travel Tips During the Holidays

Travel Preparedness Expert Cheryl Nelson has generated a few travel tips to keep you and your family safe during the holidays! Let’s break down these travel tips.

Packing

Nelson encourages holiday travelers to not overpack! Ensuring that you and your traveling party have not overpacked can save a lot of time, stress and even money. Make sure that you only pack what you really need and know you will use! If you are traveling by plane and must check a bag, know your airline’s weight restrictions prior to check in. If you’re traveling with a roller bag, make sure that you can lift that bag into the overhead bin by yourself. If you also plan on buying more items on your trip, make sure to save extra space in your suitcase.

Another specific tip that Nelson has is to roll your clothes when packing them instead of folding. This surprisingly saves a lot of room!

When packing your medications, try not to pack every single medication or supplement bottle. Pack your pills in a pill container or small bags and label them. Nelson recommends keeping a cold shortening product with Zinc on-hand, such as Zicam, to deliver general health while traveling.

Vaccination cards

Travel expert Nelson recommends having your physical vaccination card on hand when traveling this holiday seasons. Some states and even restaurants (like New York City) require proof of vaccination, so it’s best to do your research on the area you’re traveling to beforehand. Definitely make note to bring your vaccination card when traveling outside of the U.S. Nelson also urges travelers to make copies of both the front and back of the card, and to also keep a spare copy in your luggage as well as at your home. Another smart tip would be to take photos of the card to keep on your smartphone.

Nelson suggests keeping your card in a sleeve like this to ensure its protection. She also advises to not laminate the card as there is a potential to add to the card with future booster shot information.

Continue to consider the plans of your travel leading up to the anticipated dates of travel. Evaluate the amount of people you may be around, if there are COVID-19 outbreaks in the location and if there are specific restrictions in your place of travel. Although traveling by air is not risk-free, Nelson believes that traveling on a commercial airline to be safe. The cabin’s air is run through a HEPA filter and refreshed every few minutes, and airlines also still require masks as protection tactics.

Be mindful of others around you

Prioritize good personal hygiene throughout your trip. Wash your hands in warm water for at least 20 seconds, carry hand sanitizer and use it after touching common surfaces. If you are vaccinated and still feel more protected by wearing a mask, wear a mask. Throughout the duration of your trip, continue to make time for rest. Drink a lot of water and don’t forget to exercise, even by just walking. Remember that it is OK to give yourself a mental break! Nelsons encourages travelers to relax, and

Jennifer Hudson Headlines InterContinental® Miami Make-A-Wish® Ball

Make-A-Wish® Southern Florida and InterContinental® Miami raised an excess of $2.7 million net expenses at the annual InterContinental® Miami Make-A-Wish® Ball. This year’s InterContinental® Miami Make-A-Wish® Ball was held on Saturday, November 6, headlined by singer and actress Jennifer Hudson at InterContinental® Miami. Jennifer Hudson performed a captivating concert for the Ball guests where actress and filmmaker Gabrielle Anwar returned as celebrity emcee of the Ball.

The theme of the annual Ball was “Galactica,” prompted by pop culture, vintage sci-fi films and space science. The “Galactica” theme led to some very innovative and inventive analyses on the Ball’s “white carpet.” The trio known as the “Three Amigos,” including Shareef Malnik, Glenn Sampert and Norman Wedderburn, welcomed guests to the 26th annual InterContinental® Miami Make-A-Wish® Ball.

All assets raised from the Ball benefitted Make-A-Wish® Southern Florida. Make-A-Wish® Southern Florida is a non-profit organization that grants life-transforming wishes for critically ill children.

The Ball’s space theme was theorized by the Ball’s Creative Direction Maxwell Blandford. InterContinental® Miami was creatively transformed by DECO Productions into a “galactic wonderland.” The space was attributed to retro space movies “Barbarella,” “Forbidden Planet” and “The Green Slime.”

Ball guests dined on a space-themed menu curated by Chef Jhonnatan Contreras. During the dinner, “Wish Kid” Jacob Schwartz was recognized. Jacob is a critically ill six-year-old that was diagnosed with high-grade osteosarcoma. His wish was to enjoy the ocean and was realized when his family traveled to Hawks Cay Resort in the Florida Keys, courtesy of Make-A-Wish® Southern Florida. Jacob’s mother, Helen Schwartz, spoke at the ball. She thanked the charity for granting her son’s wish that led to an unforgettable, stressless opportunity for him to just enjoy being a kid again. Gala Chair Shareef Malnik dedicated the Ball to Jacob.

Gabrielle Anwar, actress, filmmaker and Make-A-Wish® Southern Florida Ambassador, returned for her 10th year as a celebrity emcee to host her signature Wishes live auction. The auction showcased “nine out-of-this world experiences and one-of-a-kind items.”

Presented by the Finker-Frenkel Family Foundation, the Ball’s entertainer Jennifer Hudson performed a 45-minute set of fan favorites. Jennifer Hudson gave performances of “Natural Woman” and “Respect,” the title song from the Aretha Franklin biopic that she stars in. All guests received VIP gift bags that consisted of a coffee table book by artist Romero Britto, a custom star-shaped donut from The Salty and a $100 gift certificate from Alto car service.

The InterContinental® Miami Make-A-Wish® Nightclub presented by E11EVEN MIAMI was the official after-party, held following the Ball at InterContinental® Miami. The after-party was headlined by Ja Rule who also performed live. DJ Affect “set the tone for the evening,” highlighting a runway show that showcased looks by House of Skye. House of Skye is a global luxury fashion house by Skye Drynan. 42 custom designs strolled down the runway. The models wore “sky-high bling ponytails and alien-esque high twists coifed by in-kind donor Danny Jelaca of Danny Jelaca Hair.” Makeup was created by Beauty For real and further eye candy was supplied by Forealism.

The Ball’s partner, founder and in-kind donor InterContinental® Miami has contributed those donations to Make-A-Wish® Southern Florida, which has further allowed the organization to raise more than $32 million. These donations have resulted in over 6,300 wishes being granted to children with life-threatening medical conditions in the chapter’s area.
