Tennessee Williams Paintings

Citizen of World III, by Tennessee Williams (1970s), oil on canvas board. On loan from David Wolkowsky. The young man depicted in this painting is symbolic of Williams’ acceptance bout becoming a target due to his sexuality.

INTIMATE PAINTINGS BY TENNESSEE WILLIAMS CAPTIVATE AUDIENCES WITH RARE MUSEUM SHOWING.

Tennessee Williams: Playwright and Painter

At the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU in Miami Beach Final Month – on view now through October 7th.

From the Collection of David Wolkowsky, Scion of Pioneer Jewish Family that Settled Key West in the 1800’s.

Long known as “Mr. Key West,” David Wolkowsky, the famed scion of Florida’s pioneer Jewish family that helped to settle Key West in the 1800s, has loaned his paintings by close friend Tennessee Williams to the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU their premiere in Miami Beach.

This is one of the few times they have been exhibited outside of Key West. The exhibition Tennessee Williams: Playwright and Painter is an intimate showing of nine exquisitely rare paintings by one of America’s greatest playwrights, created Williams in Key West during the 1970s. One of his closest friends was David Wolkowsky, the Key West developer who owned a private island called Ballast Key (nine miles from Key West), and the Pier House Resort.

Both idyllic locations were the scene of many glamorous gatherings hosted by David and Tennessee, including parties for Hollywood luminaries, heads of state, and society’s crème-de-la-crème.

If these paintings could talk, oh the stories they’d tell…

Subject matter includes the writer’s famous cohorts during the 1970s in Key West (including a portrait of a very young Michael York), and personifications from Williams’ own poetry, short stories, and characters from his plays.

Billie Holiday songs played in the background while Williams captured different images on his canvas.

Some of the paintings by Williams feature gay themes. An “open secret” throughout his fabled career, the playwright struggled with societal prejudices from a young age, and the taboos surrounding homosexuality during his lifetime manifested in a number of Williams’ paintings.

His artwork remains widely popular among collectors, most of these sought-after paintings from the last years of his life are in private hands and rarely seen.

These precious gems are the pride of the Key West Art & Historical Society, and the Miami Beach exhibition (on view through October 7 at the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU) is an uncommon opportunity to see in person how Williams expressed through painting his feelings about sexuality, loneliness and being gay.

Superior Spider-Man

This December, Otto Octavius will leave the moniker of Doctor Octopus behind…and forever become THE SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN! The new ongoing series will be penned by Christos Gage (Spider-Geddon) with art by Mike Hawthorne (Deadpool), a collaboration that will also mark a renewal of Hawthorne’s Marvel exclusive.

“I’m more than thrilled to renew my exclusive with the folks at Marvel,” Hawthorne said. “I want to emphasize folks’ here, as I think we often talk about Marvel as this big entity that just makes things happen. Marvel, to me, is the people that work day in and day out to try to make the best comics they can. They’re the ones that keep me coming back. I’m ecstatic to dedicate the next few years of my creative energies to adding to the Marvel Universe!”

Under the spectacular storytelling of Gage and Hawthorne, Otto will prove (one way or the other) that he’s the most effective Super Hero in the world! You think you’ve already read the most intense Superior Spider-Man story? Think again. This is a tale like no other!

“I had the great pleasure of collaborating with Dan Slott on his incredible Superior Spider-Man run, and I can’t wait for people to see this new chapter in Otto’s journey toward… redemption? Corruption? Triumph? Tragedy? That remains to be seen,” Gage shared with Marvel.com. “What I can tell you is that the appropriately superior artistic team of Mike Hawthorne, Wade Von Grawbadger, and Jordie Bellaire — titans of their field, all — are absolutely killing it on the art.”

“After drawing Deadpool for as long I did, I was a little heartbroken to be moving on,” Hawthorne said. “BUT, getting to work on a Spider-Man book has blunted that pain significantly! (Sorry, Wade). I’m thrilled to get a shot to work on such a flagship character! I think working specifically on Superior Spider-Man is a unique opportunity that’ll allow me to explore my own approach to a Spider-Man book. It gives me a chance to illustrate how Otto’s approach and demeanor differs from Peter, and to build on a story that I find very compelling. Christos, [editor] Nick [Lowe] and [editor] Kathleen [Wisneski] have shown a willingness to trust me and let me do my thing, which allows me to do my best work. Honestly, I haven’t been this excited to work on a new book since the beginning of Deadpool!”

Kaepernick Madden Lyrics

By Reid Urban

While Colin Kaepernick made news on Thursday when he was featured in a Nike commercial on Sunday Night Football, he also made news in the video game industry.

Back in early August, EA Sports had edited out a lyric that featured Kaepernick’s name on the Madden 19 soundtrack. It led to outrage and condemnation towards EA Sports. Eventually, they put his name back into the lyrics.

Here is what the lyrics said, courtesy of Big Sean, “feed me to the wolves now I lead the pack and s—, you boys all cap, I’m more Colin Kaepernick.” Where that name was supposed to be said, it was edited out as if it were a profanity.

EA Sports came out with a statement that it was “an unfortunate mistake,” by taking Kaepernick’s name out of the song “Big Bank” by YG on that soundtrack.

This isn’t EA Sports’s first debacle featuring his name. The Madden 18 soundtrack had a song by Mike WiLL Made-It which featured his name, but was removed as well.

Both YG and Big Sean, whose song had Kaepernick’s name in the Madden 18 soundtrack, took to Twitter to express their displeasure with removing his name.

EA Sports also said about the name, “Members of the team misunderstood the fact that while we don’t have the rights to include Colin Kaepernick in the game, this doesn’t affect the soundtrack.”

Jeremy Zucker Returns

Multi-talented, Brooklyn-based singer, songwriter and producer Jeremy Zucker returns with his new hit single “comethru” today— you can listen to it here. COMPLEX praises the song saying, “Zucker’s smooth vocals glide over bright strums of a guitar as he sings about his summer on the mellow track.”

“comethru” follows on the massive success of Zucker’s viral hit “all the kids are depressed,” which has over 28 million Spotify streams to date, and its powerful video directed by Drew Kirsch (Felix Jaehn, blackbear, Louis the Child, Quinn XCII), which has over 5 million views to date.

Not only does he have a new single, but Zucker will also embark on his first-ever North American headlining tour called the “anything, anywhere” Tour later this month, which is almost completely sold out—see the full list of dates below.

On the inspiration behind “comethru,” Zucker says, “‘comethru’ is basically a response to the way I felt after graduating college this past May and moving back home to New Jersey into the same house where I grew up. It felt strange leaving school with a record deal to make music in my parent’s basement. Summer, to me, is supposed to feel like freedom, youth, happiness. I spent most of my summer alone, writing music in that basement and figuring out if and where I would move before leaving for tour this fall. ‘comethru’ is really a song about balance.”

Growing up in suburban New Jersey, 22-year-old singer, songwriter and producer Jeremy Zucker has always been surrounded by music. As a child, he took piano and guitar lessons and formed a band with two friends from elementary school. By high school, he was writing lyrics and producing songs for other people. Eventually, Zucker recorded a rough demo, which became his first real release Beach Island in the summer of 2015. He followed it with Breathe in the fall of that same year as a freshman at Colorado College pursuing a degree in Molecular Biology. He cranked out songs in his dorm room and released them over Soundcloud—one every week. He later transferred them over to Spotify, where breathe’s lead single “Bout It” became the catalyst, hitting Spotify’s Discover Weekly playlist.

From there Zucker released Motions in 2017 and performed at his first sold-out show at The Studio of Webster Hall that summer. Following the massive streaming success of his 2017 single “talk is overrated” featuring blackbear, 2018’s intensely personal EP glisten delivered the groundbreaking song “all the kids are depressed,” the first widespread glimpse into Zucker’s songwriting ethos. In May, he graduated from Colorado College and put his degree aside to finally pursue his dream of making music. As Zucker enters this next phase of his career, he brings a new love letter to life that fans will undoubtedly connect with. “comethru” sets the stage for further music from Jeremy Zucker in 2018.

Infant Loss Retreat

The Ramsey Keller Memorial, a non-profit organization that pays for infant funerals in Montana, is launching its first-ever national retreat for moms who are living without a child. “The Retreat” is designed to connect moms in person and is slated for the weekend of October 26, 27 and 28 at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort near Butte, Montana. The registration fee is $325/person and moms, nationwide, who have experienced the loss of a child are invited to attend. Topics are primarily focused on infant loss (children 1 year of age or younger and stillborn babies). Nationally known keynote speaker and founder of Still Standing Magazine Franchesca Cox is donating her time in an effort to offer “The Retreat” at the lowest cost available. Registration includes all scheduled events, the resort room, all meals Saturday and Sunday and additional goodies for attendees.

“Franchesca Cox is known for helping moms grieve and fight for the privilege to love life again,” says Ramsey Keller Memorial Founder Kori Keller. “She has experienced the loss of her firstborn daughter and while she has spearheaded many local and worldwide projects in her daughter’s name, she found the most healing came from living life to the fullest. The Retreat is about celebrating our babies lives and finding joy in life, even through the grief. I’m grateful and humbled that Franchesca is coming to Montana to share her message with moms like myself who have lost a child.”

Franchesca Cox is the author of Facets of Grief: a creative workbook for grieving mothers, and Celebrating Pregnancy Again. She is scheduled to speak twice during the weekend retreat. Her topics are “The Space Between Love and Loss” and “Broken and Brave.” Cox is also opening up discussion on baby loss to attendees and inviting the audience to participate in a Q & A session.

“Surviving the aftermath of infant loss is something we, as mothers who have lost a child, think about often. Whether the loss was last month or last decade, this retreat has excellent programming with key takeaways for everyone, as well as a format designed to build lasting relationships,” says Founder of Still Standing Magazine Franchesca Cox.

“Women who attend The Retreat will walk away with a lifelong network of people who belong to the same club, one that no one wants to be part of, but who understand something that very few people do. We’re a network, an incredibly strong support system. We will bond together and grow together and we’re there for each other,” says Keller.

Check in for The Retreat opens Friday October 26 at 4:00 p.m. with opening remarks from Ramsey Keller Memorial Founder Kori Keller starting at 6:00 p.m. Saturday’s agenda kicks off at 8:00 a.m. with breakfast, followed by the keynote address from Franchesca Cox, break out topical discussions, a message from Kori Keller about unnecessary baggage, a creative outlet activity presented and donated by Held Your Whole Life, a second impactful message from Franchesca Cox followed by dinner at 6:00 p.m.. Sunday includes breakfast starting at 8:00 a.m. followed by a panel discussion. The Retreat wraps up at 11:00 a.m. Sunday.

For more information or to register, visit The Retreat Website. Moms are encouraged to seek sponsors if they choose to do so, as payment for the retreat is considered a non-profit donation to the Ramsey Keller Memorial. While the topics are tailored for moms who have experienced baby loss, moms are welcome to invite the women who support them to attend so that they may be joined by sisters, mothers and close friends.

Arcimoto Hosts Uber’s Return to Eugene, Oregon

Arcimoto, Inc.® (NASDAQ: FUV) — makers of the Fun Utility Vehicle® (FUV®) — an affordable, thrilling, pure electric vehicle for everyday commuters and fleets, along with the Technology Association of Oregon and Uber, ushered in the age of ridesharing in the Eugene-Springfield area on September 6.

“It was a true honor to kickoff ridesharing in Eugene at Arcimoto headquarters,” said Arcimoto Founder and President Mark Frohnmayer. “Arcimoto and Uber share the vision of a sustainable transportation system, and we believe the Arcimoto platform has a significant role to play in shared mobility fleets.”

Arcimoto hosted Uber’s return to the Eugene-Springfield area at the Arcimoto Manufacturing Plant after a three-year absence. Four FUVs formed a motorcade for the ceremonial first ride. Technology Association of Oregon (TAO) Vice President Matt Sayre escorted honorary passengers Eugene Mayor Lucy Vinis and Springfield Mayor Christine Lundberg around the Eugene streets surrounding Arcimoto Headquarters.

“This occasion represented something far more real than just ceremony,” said Sayre. “Today we were at the nexus of collaboration among Oregon cities, between state government and industry, connecting the world’s first Fun Utility Vehicle company with one of the world’s hottest technology companies. It felt really special to be Uber’s driver zero.”

Uber originally operated in the Eugene-Springfield area from 2014-2015, but suspended operation because of city regulations. In the interim, Eugene was the largest city in Oregon without any ridesharing service.

According to the Technology Association of Oregon, which was instrumental in bringing Uber back, “a coalition of TNC [Transportation Network Companies] supporters, including the Eugene and Springfield Area Chambers of Commerce, local student leaders, and members of the Technology Association of Oregon, advocated that the city council take action that would enable companies like Uber to operate in Eugene.”

Frohnmayer sees this as a sea change for the area, opening the door to the future of transportation in his own backyard, concluding, “We look forward to the role Arcimoto will play on the road of tomorrow.”
