DBD Academy’s Espresso Nutcracker

Dallas Black Dance Academy (DBD Academy) presents its fourth annual Espresso Nutcracker, with a new twist on a holiday tradition. The performance is jazz-influenced by the music of Duke Ellington’s Nutcracker Suite. Co-Sponsors for the Espresso Nutcracker are Macy’s and the City of Dallas Office of Arts and Culture.

The single performance is scheduled for Saturday, December 11 at 7 pm in the Majestic Theatre in Dallas, TX. The performance is also available via live streaming and on-demand. Through their sponsorship, Macy’s is sharing virtual viewing access with up to 30 social service agencies and children’s hospitals nationwide. Last year’s initiative allowed over 1,500 youth and families the opportunity to virtually share the holiday experience.

“We are honored to provide support to such an incredible organization, whose impactful work plays a vital role in strengthening and enriching our community,” said Emma Conniff, corporate giving associate at Macy’s. “The holidays are when Macy’s shines the brightest, and we are excited to partner with Dallas Black Dance Academy to spread holiday magic to viewers of all ages.”

DBD Academy Director Katricia Eaglin choreographed Espresso Nutcracker with assistance from the academy ballet instructors of the Pre-Professional Division levels 1-4 students who will perform in the production. Eaglin was inspired to use the traditional Tchaikovsky music along with tracks from Duke Ellington’s Nutcracker Suite, selecting Ellington tracks that were still recognizable to the original work. She added narration to the performance as well as an African dance to the Land of Sweets Act that includes Spanish, Arabian, Chinese, and Russian dances in the original.

“I was inspired to create and produce the Espresso Nutcracker for Dallas Black Dance Academy so our academy students could be involved in the Nutcracker tradition,” said Eaglin. “We’re excited to have our students re-enter the theatre and share how they have grown while training virtually during the 2020-2021 season!”

DBD Academy is the official school of the Dallas Black Dance Theatre (DBDT), and allows students to learn virtually and in-person. The original Nutcracker Ballet, choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov with a score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, is one of the most famous ballets in the world and tells the story of young Clara’s magical journey on Christmas Eve.

Many dance academies bring in professionals to dance key Nutcracker roles, but Dallas Black Dance Academy students will dance all the key parts, such as the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Snow Queen. DBDT professional dancers will dance the adult characters of the Mother, Father, and Drosselmeyer.

Dallas Black Dance Theatre is limiting seating capacity to allow for social distancing in accordance with CDC guidelines and because of limited ticket availability, DBDT will not be able to give discounts on groups or subscriptions this year. You can watch the live stream broadcast in real-time beginning at 7:00 pm CDT on Saturday, December 11, while the on-demand option will be available starting at 9:00 pm CDT Saturday through Monday, December 13, 11:59 pm CST.

2021 Eurovision Song Contest

Will there be a shock winner at the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest?

The Eurovision Song Contest is one of the most popular annual events that takes place across Europe. Over 180 million people tuned into the 2019 contest, which was won by the Netherlands. The final of the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest final takes place on 22nd May in Rotterdam, where thirty-nine countries will take part in the live-streamed musical event.

The current favorites to win in 2021

There are a few acts that will be confident of winning the final, with the Eurovision song contest odds placing Malta as 4/1 favorite to win, who will be represented by their act, Destiny. They have never won the contest before but have finished in 2nd place on two occasions. Despite being the favorites, Malta will have to navigate a semi-final before they reach the main stage.

The second favorites to win are France, who are at 5/1 odds. Unlike the predicted winners, France has won the contest on five occasions, however, they haven’t won it since 1977.  Switzerland, Italy, and Bulgaria will also perhaps all fancy their chances of winning this year as well.

Will 2021 see a shock winner?

The United Kingdom hasn’t seen a Eurovision winner since 1997 – on that occasion, Katrina and the Waves won with the song “Love, Shine a Light.” The UK’s representation in 2021 will be James Newman, a singer-songwriter who has had a successful career in the industry – though many bookmakers believe that he is unlikely to win.

Ireland is also seen as huge outsiders to win, but they are actually the most successful country in Eurovision’s history. They have won the competition on seven occasions, with the last success coming in 1996.

A previous shock winner

The 2011 edition was won by Azerbaijan, and it was seen as a huge shock at the time.  This was their first success in the competition, having only entered for the first time four years previously.

How many times has the host nation won Eurovision?

The host nation of the final has won Eurovision on seven occasions. The last time this occurred was in 1994 when the competition was won by Ireland. Looking back towards the upcoming contest, the Netherlands are, however, seen as huge outsiders to win.

A further brief history of Eurovision winners

The first edition of the contest was held in 1956. On that occasion, it was won by Switzerland. In 1969, four countries won the contest, which was the first and only time in which there were joint winners, all garnering the same score from international judges and the public vote. The United Kingdom, Spain, the Netherlands, and France all came in first place that year.

A few years later, in 1974, ABBA won their contest, and the Swedish pop group would go on to become music icons. Their winning song “Waterloo” is still popular all over the world.

There are several other countries that are yet to taste success in Eurovision. This list includes Iceland, Lithuania, Belarus, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. Will the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest see a first-time winner?

Ben Howard Shares New Track, “Sorry Kid”

Collections From The Whiteout, To Be Released March 26 2021

Global Transmission From Goonhilly Earth Satellite Station In April

Autumn Headline Shows at Royal Festival Hall Sell Out Immediately

“Mesmerizes with quiet complexity…another strange and beautiful record” –Mojo

Ben Howard is pleased to share a new track, “Sorry Kid“, from his forthcoming album, Collections From The Whiteout. The record, his fourth, will be released on March 26 through Island Records. It’s the final track to be shared ahead of the album’s release.

“Sorry Kid” is loosely inspired by the story of Anna Sorokin, the Russian-born German woman who posed as a billionaire heiress and was imprisoned for fraudulent activity in America. Musically, it’s an atmospheric mood-setter that taps into the general aura of Collections From The Whiteout, and is another tantalizing taster to a special record.

Last week, Ben shared details of an exclusive one-off global live stream event to celebrate the release of the new record.

Filmed at the iconic Goonhilly Earth Station on the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall, UK, Ben and his band will perform new album tracks for the first time. This show marks the first band performance since the conclusion of a worldwide tour in January 2019, which culminated in a sold-out four night run at Brixton Academy.

The film will be streamed as live on April 8 across different time zones.

Stream #1, UK & Europe (Global Premiere): Thursday April 8 – LONDON (8pm BST), PARIS (9pm CET)
Stream #2, East Coast North America & South America: Thursday April 8– NEW YORK (8PM EDT)
Stream #3, West Coast North America & Central America: Thursday April 8- LA (8PM PDT)
Stream #4, Australasia & South East Asia: Friday April 9- TOKYO/SYDNEY (7PM JST / 8PM AEST)

Tickets are now on general sale via Ticketmaster/Universe.

As previously announced, Ben returns to the live arena in September for his first live shows since four consecutive sold-out nights at Brixton Academy back in January 2019. The pair of Royal Festival Hall (September 18 and 19) sold out instantly.

Collections From The Whiteout heralds the first time Ben has opened the door to collaboration, drafting in The National’s Aaron Dessner on production (a recent Grammy winner for his work with Taylor Swift), and a team of players from the likes of Big Thief, This Is The Kit, and drummer/producer Yussef Dayes. Strings were orchestrated by Bon Iver/Laura Marling collaborator, Rob Moose.

Collections From The Whiteout has an immediately breezier tone than Ben’s last record, whilst losing none of the experimental tendencies that made Noonday Dream so compelling.

The subject matter, previously shrouded in obfuscation, takes a scrapbook approach to Ben’s lyricism. Mostly based on snippets of radio news or headline scrolling, he’s let his imagination take those snapshots to wild and remote places, creating stories within stories. Characters are formed, histories are inferred. It’s beautifully random, and makes for an engrossing whole.

DBYB Fest Promotional Poster

The Don’t Block Your Blessings Festival

Out of loss and adversity emerges an uplifting global project and festival, led by Erez Safar (who produces under the name h2the), in honor of his late mother, “Frida Levona bat Shalom”.

“I lost my mom to cancer two months ago,” Safar shared, “and the pain was so intense, I knew I had to do something with it. My mom had an incredible light inside her and navigated the world with hope and positivity. I realized the best way to honor her memory would be to turn that pain and darkness I was feeling into a light that I could share with others. So I put together this project called ‘Don’t Block Your Blessings’ (DBYB), and I hope it can become a space for people to share wisdom for leading better, happier lives.”

Safar comes off as warm, playful, and relaxed as he speaks with me over video chat, from his LA apartment. He tells me he looks at the DBYB platform as a form of “Cheat Codes To Happiness,” where people can trade stories as they navigate the ups and downs of life, and share how they have been able to bring more blessings into their lives via perspective, faith and gratitude. In addition to live-stream festivals (the next of which will take place this month), the project also lives on the site here, as well as an active discussion and healing space on the new and wildly popular mobile app, Clubhouse.

Don’t Block Your Blessings (DBYB) first launched two months ago, with a one of a kind live-stream festival by the same name, featuring musicians, artists, and some of the most innovative minds in self-growth and healing. The DBYB Festival is hosted on an exclusive virtual platform, which boasts three interactive rooms and allows festival-goers to easily move from room to room, as then explore various talks, musical performances, and the creation of visual art, live in real-time.

This is not the first time Safar has wowed with his creative approach to online events. His first live-stream festival, Lo-Freq Fest, was featured in Billboard and shared around the globe. The debut DBYB festival featured over 40+ world-wide presenters with 25,774 viewers.

The next festival will be free to attend virtually and is set to take place on Valentine’s (Sunday, February 14th), between 6-9 pm PST.

The festival will feature contemporary artists, musicians, and teachers in the fields of self-growth and healing. Presenters include:

Alicia Dunams

The founder of Bestseller in a Weekend, Dunams has helped more than 1500 leaders write books. She is also a leadership trainer, executive coach and certified peacemaker. She will be presenting in the healing room “The Slippery Slope vs. The Conscious Climb – Managing Our Unconscious Bias.”

Dr. Aparajita (AJ)

A social psychologist, a diversity and inclusion consultant, a certified life and executive coach, an author, a speaker, an immigrant, and a two-time traumatic brain injury survivor. She will be presenting in the healing room “Making Your Invisible Visible for Happiness.”

Purveyors of funk and hip hop, founders Woes Martin, Silent John, and Mike Steel will be bringing their fabric puppetry and beats to the festival.

The livestream pay-per-view performance is Wonho’s much-anticipated return to live performing. Wonho recently debuted his first single “Losing You” on August 14th, earning many great reactions from his awaited fans. Following that release, Wonho dropped his first solo mini album ‘Love Synonym #1 : Right for Me’, featuring the title track “Open Mind” on September 4th, which topped the Worldwide iTunes Album charts; taking up the #1 spot under U.S. Pop Album Chart, K-Pop Album Chart in twenty different countries including U.S., and catapulting to #6 under the U.S. All Genres Album Chart.

Immediately upon release, “wonho” was trending #1 worldwide on Twitter, with “open mind,” “#OPEN_MIND,” and “#Love_Synonym” following closely behind. As Wonho makes his first step as a solo artist with this eight-track mini album, he showcases not only his vocal skills; but also his lyrical, compositional, and production skills.

The title ‘Love Synonym’ symbolizes a new start that is different from Wonho’s music style and performances that he has shown before. ‘Love Synonym’ is a new definition of love that Wonho created in order to show his pledges and determinations that he will communicate with his fans. Wonho expressed his earnestness by participating in writing and composing five songs, including the title track “Open Mind” and the pre-released single “Losing You.”

The full performance on LiveXLive will not only feature songs from Wonho’s new solo album among other original and cover songs and a unique PPV experience with behind the scenes footage, docureality-style coverage. Buzz surrounding his pre-released single, “Losing You,” which was dedicated to the fans who thought they may have lost him, took the U.S. Market by storm. Upon release, #WONHO_LosingYou_MV shot up to the #1 Twitter Trend Worldwide; and received notable mentions from publications such as PAPER Magazine, MTV News, Access, iHeart, and Rolling Stone, who stated,

“Performed entirely in English, the sweeping, piano-driven ballad showcases Wonho’s delicate falsetto, as he sings about protecting a cherished love despite all costs.”

Wonho also spoke to Forbes and Teen Vogue about his solo ventures.

“While these weren’t easy moments to face and endure, it was a time that made me think a lot and that allowed me to develop and grow — that was very important and precious for me. I thought of the fans waiting and supporting me … I feel a little more mature, and like I have more to say to the world.”

Late last year, Wonho’s fans tirelessly put forth efforts to show him he wasn’t alone in this world. Their message was heard globally, loud and clear; with multiple hashtags trending worldwide on twitter for weeks on end, online petitions garnering half a million signatures, fans taking it to the streets of Seoul writing supportive notes, and putting up billboards in Times Square, China and all over the world to support him.

As told by Forbes, “…fans had shown their support for the artist by sending the 2017 song “From Zero,” a special track co-written and producer by Wonho, to No. 1 on Billboard’s World Digital Song Sales chart to help prove his continuing viability and commercial appeal as an artist, songwriter and producer.”

After months of fan-driven fundraisers, online petitions, Twitter trends and love; Wonho is thrilled to be giving back to his fans. His fanbase’s new name is Wenne; and the fandom name represents the special bond between Wonho and his fans, who have been there to support him through the ups and downs.

Wonho sings passionately on the track “Coz anytime or place I’d be your shield, when you feel, like you ain’t got the fight in you to heal.”

The release of “Losing You” is Wonho’s first step forward in his solo career after signing with Highline Entertainment, which is a subsidiary label of Starship Entertainment—the home to K-pop groups including Monsta X, WJSN and Cravity—and houses viral EDM star DJ Soda [Read HERE on Forbes]. Back in early April, Wonho also joined Maverick Management’s roster, alongside Britney Spears, Madonna, The Weeknd, and many more big-name artists.

Mika – I Love Beirut

  • Beirut born, British-Lebanese singer Mika will live-stream a concert across four time zones on 19 September in aid of the people of the city
  • Mika will perform an intimate show from a special location, with a number of surprises from friends, all money from ticket sales and donations going directly to aid charities helping those affected in Beirut
  • ‘I Love Beirut’ partners with GoFundMe to launch a campaign where additional donations can be made
  • Tickets will be available to purchase via Ticketmaster worldwide at 9am BST / 10am CET on Monday, 24 August

Today, Mika announces the ‘I love Beirut’ benefit concert, which will be performed on Saturday 19 September and will be live-streamed across four time zones via YouTube. Tickets cost £10 / $10 / €10 and will be available from TicketMaster alongside the GoFundMe campaign, where people can make additional donations to the cause with 100% of all proceeds being split across Red Cross Lebanon and Save the Children Lebanon. Tickets go on sale at 9am BST / 10am CET on Monday 24 August.

This intimate performance has been initiated by Lebanese born singer Mika after he was profoundly affected by the scale of devastation from the explosion in Beirut docks and its impact on the people of the city. Following on from his ‘Love Letter to Beirut’ (see note to editors below) which he wrote directly in the aftermath of the explosion. In an effort to do more he has created ‘I Love Beirut’ an event to raise funds to help those who have been affected by the devastating explosion.

Mika comments: -“After all the years of civil war, financial crisis and political upheaval, the news of the tragic explosion was unbelievable. Although far away, my heart broke for the families losing their homes, their livelihoods and their loved ones in this catastrophe. I wanted to do something to help in any small way I can. That is why I am staging a live stream concert in aid of the people of the city. Beirut has been through so much and the resilience and strength the Lebanese people is undeniable. I have no doubt that the city will recover and the unique life of this magical city will resume once again. Beirut is the place of my birth, is part of me and will always be in my heart. ‘I ❤️ Beirut’.

The Lebanese United Nations team has reported the explosion was like 15 years of war in 15 seconds, comparing its impact to the devastation from the country’s civil war that lasted from 1975 to 1990. Miles from the blast site apartments are wrecked and families left homeless. It’s estimated 300,000 people do not have homes fit to live in, as Lebanon now has to undertake a single recovery effort of unprecedented scale.

Hospitals in Beirut are now overrun with wounded people, with some being referred to Tripoli, 50 miles to the north of Beirut, for treatment. The destruction of Beirut’s port will devastate the country further as it relies heavily on imports for its essential supplies. Red Cross Lebanon, Lebanese Food Bank, Islamic Relief and Save the Children Lebanon. are working around the clock to help those on the ground affected by the blast. Donations will fund immediate emergency response and wider long-term rehabilitation.

James Bay Live Stream in London

In support of the Save Our Venues campaign and to follow the release of his new single ‘Chew On My Heart’, James Bay will return to the stage in London to perform a 45 minute live set which will be streamed worldwide for fans to enjoy on July 16th, 2020.

A different kind of live performance in a post Covid-19 world, the stream will be broadcast on James Bay’s official YouTube channel, currently home to 1.73 million subscribers and 927 million video views.

It will be a fundraiser with direct donation links to Save Our Venues, the official music industry crowdfunder started to protect UK grassroots music venues at risk of permanent closure due to Covid-19.

Born in Hitchin and having extensively toured venues on the UK music scene whilst building his career, this is a cause which is extremely close to James’ heart. On his motivation to support the cause, James says: “Big or small, spending time honing your craft and performing in venues is vital on the journey to becoming a successful touring and recording artist. We must never live in a world where live music venues don’t exist. They are as important for the artist as they are for the countless visitors and of course the dedicated staff that devote themselves to running those rooms like clockwork. Venues offer a joy, an escape and a magic you just don’t experience through a screen or even through a stereo speaker. At all costs, we must save our venues.”

The stream will be open to everyone, unticketed with optional donations. The fundraiser page will be live on announce and donations will be open from Monday 13th during the countdown to the stream. After the live performance, the video will be accessible to watch back from James’ YouTube channel going forward, though the ability to donate will close on Monday 20th July.

Fans should first check to see if a song they want to request has already been requested, and if so, upvote it instead of typing it in. If a song has not yet been requested, anybody can type it in for other fans to upvote. There will be a 5 song submission limit. The most upvoted songs will create the setlist.

The White Buffalo recently released his seventh studio album On The Widow’s Walk, produced by Shooter Jennings. Upon release, the album charted in six categories, including #1 Bluegrass #2 Americana/Folk #4 New Artist #8 Rock. Newsweek praised the album saying it’s “an adventurous work of Americana” and Associated Press said, “Listening to The White Buffalo’s songs on the road will make you take the long way home so you can enjoy them a little while more.”

“I am able to put myself into the situation of the character, even though that character may not represent my point of view,” Smith reflects. “I try to take it to a human level and keep it as honest as I can. I guess what I’ve tried to do with this new album is to represent a broad range of emotions.” The album runs the gamut exploring dark moments as well as more uplifting ones, and a little bit of what’s in between. “I like to put some confusion into my songs, which is a very human element, I think.”

On The Widow’s Walk is a compelling, gimmick-free statement from an artist, now based in Southern California, whose activity between the musical lines has seen his star very much on the rise, playing to a million followers worldwide, achieving over 200 million streams to date, and securing a Top 10 spot in the TV/Film Syncs Chart for 2019.

Smith has also been using the time away from the road to revitalize his popular acoustic YouTube series, In The Garage, which has seen the release of four new episodes since mid-April after returning from a lengthy hiatus. Combining Smith’s natural humor, charm, musicianship, and taste for craft beer, In The Garage has proven itself to be an instant fan-favorite amongst day one supporters and new listeners alike.

About The Belly Up

The Belly Up was opened in Solana Beach, CA, in 1974 with only a couple of mics and no stage. Over the years it became a frequent stop for legends like John Lee Hooker, Etta James, and BB King. Epic performances by Curtis Mayfield, George Clinton, The Neville Brothers, and Toots and Maytals also are a part of the club’s early legacy. Since then, many artists have stopped by on their way up the ladder, including No Doubt, Black Eyed Peas, Mumford and Sons, Childish Gambino, and many more. Major artists have done underplays at the venue in recent years, including The Killers, The Red Hot Chili Peppers (who also played the club for 200 people in 1985), Jimmy Buffet, Willie Nelson, Ben Harper, Damian Marley, and Tom Jones. And, perhaps most famously, the Rolling Stones played a private event there in 2015.

Digital Mirage Festival

Following the enormous success of the first Digital Mirage Festival, Los Angeles based independent electronic music brands Proximity and Brownies & Lemonade have announced their return to the virtual festival community with Digital Mirage 2, slated to take place June 5-7, 2020.

Over the span of three days in April, Digital Mirage made its mark as one of the first major live-streamed music festivals, drawing in over one million attendees across the weekend. The event raised over $300,000 to benefit Sweet Musicians Relief Fund, a charity committed to supporting musicians and music industry professionals whose primary income source has been severely affected due to the effects of COVID-19. Audience members were graced with fifty performances from artists like Alison Wonderland, SOFI TUKKER, Valentino Khan, TOKiMONSTA, Louis the Child, Chet Porter, Mija, Ghastly, Keys N Krates and more.

As part of the June event, streamers that tune in can once again expect a heavy hitting lineup with artists and producers representing all walks of the electronic music industry. Performances will include a live loop set from turntablist extraordinaire A-Trak, bass legend Baauer, hard-edged label boss Boys Noize, electro-pop selector Elohim, saxophone wielding GRiZ and a Redux set from renowned house veteran Kaskade. Further streams will be provided by leading Aussie export and
Beats1 broadcaster Anna Lunoe, GUD VIBRATIONS leader NGHTMRE, a unique Concertgebouw Set from Oliver Heldens, pristine future bass from San Holo, melodic mastery by SG Lewis, genre blending by Two Feet, a singular set from electronic powerhouse ZHU, and dramatic alt-pop from breakout star EVAN GIIA amongst many others.

Digital Mirage was one of the pioneering digital music festivals that shaped the direction of the live music industry at the start of the COVID-19 shelter-in-place order. All proceeds will be donated to Plus1’s Fund for COVID-19 relief and artists performing the festival. The festival, completely free of charge, generates funds through participant donations.

With a prior reputation for fostering dedicated internet-based communities, Proximity, Brownies & Lemonade and Keel represent the next wave in music entrepreneurs aimed to foster the future of the global music industry.
