Joy Crookes × New York Times

Joy Crookes — who is already garnering Amy Winehouse and Lauryn Hill comparisons from her own songs—began her musical journey years before her magpie-like introduction to brass. The daughter of a Bengali mother and an Irish father, she grew up listening to an eclectic mix of genres. Every week, while driving her to Irish dancing lessons, they would listen to a different album. Kendrick Lamar’s ‘To Pimp a Butterfly’ one week ‘Soon Forward’ by Gregory Isaac the next. As a curious, passionate, and music-obsessed 12-year-old, Joy decided to start writing her own song and honing her modern soul sound. Her first song “Seaside” was penned after falling head over heels for a boy by the beach. Seven years later, her songs might have grown more sophisticated, but the approach remains the same: whether she’s dealing with heartbreak or trying to come to terms with the latest Trump headline, Joy is committed to translating her most honest and vulnerable feelings to music. While her candid song-writing and fearless attitude have won her dedicated grassroots following, it was a baby-faced Joy singing a cover of Hit the Road Jack, which caught the attention of 600,000 viewers, and her first management company. Now she has a feature in the New York Times.

Helping Holocaust Survivors Through Covid-19

On this Inaugural Holocaust Survivor Day, The Blue Card, a national non-profit organization dedicated to aiding over 3,000 needy Holocaust survivors households is raising awareness of the services available through their organization for Holocaust survivors—as well as the ongoing need for donor support to fund these important initiatives.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, The Blue Card has been providing the following critical services for Holocaust survivors, among many others:

  • Ready-made meals, food purchase and delivery service
  • Securing vaccination appointments and providing transportation
  • Summer Retreat – Survivors are provided with handicapped-accessible accommodations, transportation, scheduled meals, and an itinerary that ensures a structure and safe experience for the group.
  • Mood Restore Light Box – A special, compact, and portable UV free unit provides light therapy to Holocaust survivors. In addition to effectively treating Seasonal Affective Disorder, the Mood Restore Light Box improved visual clarity and color rendering, as well as offsets season, weather, and climate changes and helps support circadian rhythm regulation, which is even more important during COVID-19 times.
  • Companion Pets – Companion pets bring comfort and happiness to the older population with interactive electronic cats and dogs that replicate the look, sounds, and feel of real pets. Many studies have found that these pets can enhance one’s well-being and quality of life through companionship.
  • Liftware Utensils –Liftware Steady is an electronic stabilizing handle and selection of utensil attachments designed to help people with hand tremor, which may be related to Parkinson’s disease or essential tremor, to eat more easily. Holocaust survivors with these conditions benefit tremendously from this device.

The Blue Card is providing critical assistance to Holocaust survivors during the COVID-19 pandemic,” stated The Blue Card’s Executive Director, Masha Pearl. “It is our duty to take care of those that have already suffered so much, during this time that can be extra traumatizing, considering their pre-existing conditions from enduring unimaginable hardships during the Holocaust.”

The Blue Card also provides Holocaust survivors with the following services daily:

  • Education & Outreach Programs:
    • Person-Centered, Trauma-Informed (PCTI) training for dental and medical professionals working with Holocaust survivors
    • The Blue Card-Lissner Hospital Visitation Program – Volunteer visits to hospitalized Holocaust survivors.
    • Nutrition guidance
  • Jewish Holiday – Provides financial support for the High Holidays, Hannukah, and for Passover, giving survivors the financial means for a better holiday season.
  • Mazel Tov Birthday – Provides survivors with a card and a check on their birthday. This is particularly meaningful for holocaust survivors who lost their entire family during the war.
  • FreeStyle Libre Glucose Monitoring: The Freestyle Libre 2 system continuously measures glucose data with customizable, optional real time alarms The unit gives people with diabetes excellent accuracy and actionable information to better manage their condition.
  • Grant assistance for emergency needs, including:
    • Housing and related costs to prevent eviction, homelessness, or utility shut-off
    • Emergency relocation
    • Food purchase
    • Medical and dental care, including medical equipment not covered by insurance
    • Emergency relocation
    • Essential clothing and footwear
    • Purchase and repair or essential major and minor appliance

The Blue Card, established in 1934 in Germany and organized in the U.S. in 1939, is the only organization whose sole mission is to provide critical financial aid for emergency medical, dental, housing and food needs to survivors of Nazi persecution. While the Holocaust seems like a long ago nightmare, for survivors it is a continuing one. Of the 75,000 Holocaust survivors in the U.S., 1/3 live at or below the federal poverty level. For many, the losses they experienced decades ago are compounded by their current struggles to subsist on meager incomes and threadbare or nonexistent support systems.  Studies show that Holocaust survivors have higher incidences of mental illness, cancer, and other debilitating diseases.

Champion Athleticwear Unveils New Artist Series Supporting Talent Across The Country

Series Features Four Artists, each with a Collection Defined by Authentic, Inspired, Grassroots Voices

Champion Athleticwear, makers of authentic athletic apparel since 1919, is introducing an Artist Series to celebrate the diversity of talent and creativity found across the United States.  The series features four street artists who have unique perspectives on design, fashion and personal expression. The artists have ties to cities across the country, including New York City, Chicago and Seattle.

The first drop is from Ricardo Gonzalez, a designer and artist from Durango, Mexico, currently based in Brooklyn, New York, who lives by the philosophy, “IT’S A LIVING,” which inspires his work. Ricardo uses typography as his medium and has incorporated his signature script into a variety of work spanning large-scale murals to commercial work for brands to simple stickers seen on the streets.   As part of the collection drop, Champion commissioned Ricardo to create one of his signature murals in Brooklyn, New York.

Ricardo’s vibrant, colorful script style will appear on a limited collection of Reverse Weave hoodies, heritage graphic tees and Reverse Weave cut-off shorts for men and Reverse Weave cropped cutoff hoodies, heritage graphic tees and Reverse Weave shorts for women. The apparel has black, oxford gray, white and scarlet colors supporting neon text overlay of phrases including “Better Yourself,” “Keep Tryin’,” “The Way Up” and “Change The Future.”  Ricardo hopes his signature positive messages and uplifting designs unify people together during these challenging times.

“As an artist and designer, it means so much to me to collaborate with Champion on an inclusive collection that promotes my positive aesthetic to the masses,” said Ricardo Gonzalez.  “The phrases we chose for this collection fit really well with Champion’s philosophy. My favorite piece is “Better Yourself,” as it expresses self-improvement and what it means to be competitive as a Champion.  I hope when people wear my Champion pieces that they feel empowered and like a Champion.”

Apparel in Ricardo’s It’s A Living collection ranges from $35 to $75 in sizes XS through 2XL and will be in Champion retail stores and online at Champion.com, Champs Sports and Footaction beginning May 12, 2021. Each Artist Series drop will be available for a limited time with Brooklyn-based neon artist Adam Fu, up next in the series. Fu will be followed later this year by New York-based Steffi Lynn and Chicago-based Merlot.

James Bay Live Stream in London

In support of the Save Our Venues campaign and to follow the release of his new single ‘Chew On My Heart’, James Bay will return to the stage in London to perform a 45 minute live set which will be streamed worldwide for fans to enjoy on July 16th, 2020.

A different kind of live performance in a post Covid-19 world, the stream will be broadcast on James Bay’s official YouTube channel, currently home to 1.73 million subscribers and 927 million video views.

It will be a fundraiser with direct donation links to Save Our Venues, the official music industry crowdfunder started to protect UK grassroots music venues at risk of permanent closure due to Covid-19.

Born in Hitchin and having extensively toured venues on the UK music scene whilst building his career, this is a cause which is extremely close to James’ heart. On his motivation to support the cause, James says: “Big or small, spending time honing your craft and performing in venues is vital on the journey to becoming a successful touring and recording artist. We must never live in a world where live music venues don’t exist. They are as important for the artist as they are for the countless visitors and of course the dedicated staff that devote themselves to running those rooms like clockwork. Venues offer a joy, an escape and a magic you just don’t experience through a screen or even through a stereo speaker. At all costs, we must save our venues.”

The stream will be open to everyone, unticketed with optional donations. The fundraiser page will be live on announce and donations will be open from Monday 13th during the countdown to the stream. After the live performance, the video will be accessible to watch back from James’ YouTube channel going forward, though the ability to donate will close on Monday 20th July.
