Tierra Whack × Pop?

Grammy-nominated rapper, singer, songwriter and poet Tierra Whack has just released her second EP, Pop?. Pop? comes only one week after the release of Tierra’s first EP of 2021, Rap?. Tierra also debuted the new music video for “Body of Water,” which comes exclusively from the new EP Pop?. The music video was directed by the award-winning Cat Solen, who has directed the videos of Tierra’s other hits “Link” and “Unemployed.”

Pop? showcases production from one of Tierra’s regular collaborators J Melodic. As a pair, Tierra and J Melodic were recently profiled in NPR for “The Formula.” Sierra’s three-song EP showcases her witty and captivating personality as she navigates through love and relationships. The Pop? EP comes just one week following its sister EP, Rap?. Rap? has gained the attention of such outlets, with the Rolling Stone commemorating the “succinct distillation of Tierra Whack’s hypercompetitive spirit, enriched by some smart, introspective gems.” Consequence even named “Stand Up” their “Rap Song of the Week.” With such commotion surrounding Tierra’s work, the sky is the limit for her future pieces.

Tierra has, too, just launched a collaboration with the one and only Vans on December 3. Tierra and her stylist Shirley Kurata set out to create a 1980s-inspired collection that encapsulated Tierra’s unique attitude and style that she carries with her in all her endeavors. The collab is depicted as a “mélange of colors, shapes, patterns, and phrases that explores limitless creativity.”

The first of its kind compilation album of original songs features a female writer on every song, and is led by an all-female team of artists, creatives and executives such as Heather Lowery (Executive Producer), Annie Bercy (Video Director), Katherine Realpe (Behind the Scenes Director), Marcella “Ms. Lago” Araica (Mixing Engineer), Piper Payne (Mastering Engineer) and more. Big Femme Energy is an expression of the unique duality of power and delicacy. Its about family, love, sisterhood, and the experiences that connect us as women. It celebrates the power, and achievements of women and girls, while sharing stories of insecurities, vulnerabilities and navigating mistakes, which every young woman can feel empowered by. It pays homage to those who came before us while paying it forward to those who will come after us,” said Heather Lowery, Executive Producer of Big Femme Energy. “From our all-female show lineups and the announcement of our Next Gem Femme mentorship program to the release of Big Femme Energy Volume 1 and the upcoming launch of our new indie label; Femme It Forward is truly a vessel to promote messages of intersectional feminism and empowerment while increasing the numbers for women in music across the board – from the artists, producers, writers and engineers to the executives and creatives behind the scenes. Were moving beyond just live events and entertainment; were changing the face of the music industry.

The skillfully curated album juxtaposes a soulful sound on tracks like “While I’m Alive” by Lauren Jauregui and “Who New by Tierra Whack, with powerful, high-energy tracks like “Cut ‘Em Off by Kiana Ledé; all with an underlying theme of empowering women to embrace their best selves. Paying homage to industry veterans that have paved the way was a common theme throughout the album with artists like Rapsody proclaiming “I think I’m Mary J, always did it how I wanted” in reference to Mary J. Blige on “Iconic” and SAYGRACE sampling Brandy’s “Have You Ever” on “If There Really Is A God.” From Tayla Parx’s unapologetic proclamation that this world would be nothing without women on the opening track “Mother Nature to Sinéad Harnett’s reminder that “inside you’ve always been enough” on the outro “Crown”, Big Femme Energy is full of quintessential summer anthems that will inspire women for generations to come.

Amazon Music, PUMA, and Glossier will further amplify Big Femme Energy with the release of new original content from the making of the album. Femme It Forward is also committed to donating a portion of the proceeds of all album sales to Next Gem Femme, its annual mentorship program focused on enhancing the futures of women of color by providing them with access and opportunities.

A Gift From Beyoncé

‘Superb. Reminiscent of Michael Jackson’s Remember The Time!’Vaughn Lowery, 360 Magazine

By Mina Tocalini

Beyoncé’s new film “Black is King,” a celebration of the “breadth and beauty of Black ancestry”, released on Disney+ today. Similar to Beyoncé’s 2016 film, “Lemonade,” “Black is King” acts as a visual album to her soundtrack, “The Lion King: The Gift.” Black Is King” explores the “timeless lessons” from Lion King in a visually rich modern journey of Black empowerment and resilience.

Beyoncé announced her excitement for the film’s release via Instagram, while further acknowledging the impact of its release and message: “The events of 2020 have made the film’s vision and message even more relevant, as people across the world embark on a historic journey… I believe that when Black people tell our own stories, we can shift the axis of the world and tell our REAL history.”

Beyoncé’s prideful film explores the Black experience and history through a young king’s story of “betrayal, love and self-identity.” Additionally, given the timing of its release, the film presents the necessity of honoring and telling stories from the Black perspective and that of any underrepresented community.

Simply put, the film is a celebratory visual journey of the Black experience. Initially the flow of the story seems interrupted and fast paced, but further on, it becomes clear that instead of following a linear narrative, it challenges the audience to find the connections within the short moments that frame each message.

Reiterating the same story we know and love is unnecessary, so rather, “Black is King” reinvents the Lion King through thematic experimentation intended to ignite pride in the Black identity. In a stunning collage of Afro-Soul music, narrative driven reflections and strikingly beautiful imagery, the film successfully expresses inspirational messages of hope, growth, love and community.

Some have critiqued the lavish presentation of Blackness via art, dance and fashion to be excessive and fast paced. Yet, this film’s message is focused on individuality and self love derived from the appreciation of Black culture. A culture of an entire continent and of Black communities around the world, it is anything but simple.

The immense detail in this film celebrates the complexity of Black beauty and the fast paced editing can not only be considered a reference to music video styles. It may originate from there, but can we not interpret it as being part of the overwhelming journey of defining your identity while struggling with the racial tensions in society.

Beyoncé did not create this to simply further enhance her image in a display of wealth, popular culture already associates her persona this way, we expect it and should not disregard the artistry for embracing it. She is simply using her power as a superstar to lead the unifying celebration, as should be done by those who can.

Additionally, Beyoncé is not the only star in “Black is King”, although American audiences may mainly recognize her. Emerging African artists such as Wizkid, Busiswa, Shatta Wale, Salatiel, Mr Eazi, Tiwa Savage, Yemi Alade, Burna Boy, Tekno, Moonchild Sanelly and Lord Afrixana were part of the album and in some in the film. Black American artists also include Kelly Rowland, 070 Shake, Childish Gambino, Jessie Reyez, Pharrell Williams, Nija, and Tierra Whack. The presence of these Black American legends establishes the familiarity necessary to create an alliance between both Black cultures and induce a movement of African diaspora celebration.
