Mon Laferte × District 13 International Art Fair

Artist Mon Laferte joins in at the District 13 International Art Fair in Paris this week amongst leading artists from the realms of street and pop art. The exhibition opens to the public from January 13 to 16.

Gracias,” the acrylic, mixed media piece of art created by Laferte will be auctioned off on Sunday, January 16 at 4:00 PM. (CET), by Drouot Group. To be eligible to bid on the auction day, make sure to register before Sunday, January 16 HERE.

Mon Laferte places her artwork on exhibit at the District 13 International Art Fair, represented by the Bahía Utópica Art Gallery in Valparaíso, at the Hôtel Drouot. The art fair brings together the edginess but energetic ambiances from galleries of street and pop art. An auction house showcased at the fair elevates the cohabitation of varying media forms to support urban artists.

Spanning from January 13 to 16 Laferte’s paintings will be available for sale, accompanied by a group of six other Chilean artists from Valparaíso, at Stand 10-B located at 9 Rue Drouot Paris. Her painting, “Gracias,” joins the special final auction with 27 other top artists from the world of street and pop art, on January 16. View the catalog HERE.

The piece “Gracias” is an Acrylic and mixed technique piece on canvas with dimensions of 122 x 91 centimeters. Laferte speaks about the piece, stating, “Some of these paintings I did while I was undergoing hormonal treatment to get pregnant. I have never heard anyone talk about the terror they feel, every day is an achievement. These have been the months in which I have felt the most fear in all my life. Never before did I take care of myself as much as I do now. Before I could drink and not sleep for many days and nothing mattered to me, now everything has changed for me. Every decision is critical to the successful end of my pregnancy. Also the hormones have been completely violent. Sometimes I go from happiness to deep depression. Pregnancy is not all tender and rosy. There are days when I feel like a black hole that lives in me is swallowing me.”

Mon Laferte – Amigos Simplemente

Mon Laferte premiered the video for “Amigos Simplemente” today, exclusively through Facebook. It’s a universally relatable love song as Mon sings of that moment when friendship begins to transform, and that simple affection you once felt becomes stronger.

“I want something with you, more than being friends… Let me love you or at least try. It is no coincidence to love you; it is not an accident,” the Chilean artist sings.

The latest single from Mon’s recent album Seis, “Amigos Simplemente” focuses on a young couple who slowly displays to us that there is something more to their relationship than being just simply friends. The premiere of the new video takes place ahead of Latino and Hispanic Heritage Month (LHHM), which is celebrated from September 15 to October 15. Throughout the month, Facebook will highlight stories from diverse artists and personalities from Latino and Hispanic communities that shape the culture of the United States. This year, Mon Laferte is one of the singers honored for her diverse contributions and achievements in America.

SEIS is an intensely personal album inspired by a documentary about Mexican-via Costa Rica singer Chavela Vargas, who is best known for revolutionizing Mexican ranchera music. The songs were born during the global pandemic and heavy isolation, and include carefully crafted lyrics, brought forth from self-reflection, allowing Mon to explore her deepest feelings, leaving nothing but vulnerability at this rare time.

Billboard calls SEIS, “Vulnerable and commanding” and VICE says, “It gives you chills, requiring no knowledge of Spanish to communicate its emotion… a gut-stomping triumph.” BBC Music says, “SEISis her most intimate and courageous yet; tackling complex topics such as misogyny, repression, and injustice, inspired by her lived experiences.”

Latinidad in American Festivals

Until recently, urbane Latin music has been scarce in mainstream American music festivals. Thus, the 2019 Coachella latino lineup is a huge deal because it’s the largest and most profitable one on the planet.

In the past, only a few latin artists have performed at the prestigious venue – Cafe Tacvba and The Mars Volta. In 2010, Calle 13 was the first urbano latino artist to hit the stage. In 2018, there were a total of 11 latin artists such as Helado Negro, Ibeyi, Los Angeles Azules, Kali Uchis and Cuco. Fast forward to the present, there’s 17 latin artists slated to perform at this year’s Coachella – a total win for the culture! As we all know, this roster will and has already attracted a much more diverse audience.

As of late, J Balvin brought reggeaton and latin urbano back to the stage. His performance included reggeaton classics like “Oye Mi Canto” by N.O.R.E featuring Nina Sky and “Rakata” by Wisin y Yandel. Bad Bunny took to the stage on April 14th and returns again on the 21st to make a second iconic show. Los Tucanes de Tijuana (popular group from the late 80’s) graced the stage playing “La Chona” and other hits.

Chilean singer, Mon Laferte, has sold over a half of a million albums in Latin America and is also listed on this year’s lineup. Her career began on a singing competition show in Chile, Rojo.

In short, the amount of Latin as well as minority artists added to major festival lineups will continue to develop, namely due to Beyoncé’s Homecoming.
