Music Educators Teaching Online

K-12 musical instruction and performances may look different this fall, but the beat will go on thanks to creativity and music-making technologies, says a Purdue University expert.

“There are so many online tools out there that music educators can use to bring students together during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Christopher Cayari, assistant professor of music education in the Patti and Rusty Rueff School of Design, Art, and Performance at Purdue. “One option is for programs to host online concerts or performances through the recording and mixing of virtual ensembles and individual performances.”

Platforms like Soundtrap by Spotify and Protools are great resources for sound editing. Other softwares like Flipgrid and Adobe Premiere do video editing, while Acapella by PicPlayPost and BandLab are compilation apps available for mobile devices to create musical productions amid the pandemic. Cayari encourages music educators to experiment with these softwares to make music with their students, and the skills they develop while distance learning can then be carried into physical classrooms after the pandemic is over.

“Putting together a virtual ensemble can be difficult, but I have seen many tech-savvy educators or sound engineers helping music educators create virtual performances,” Cayari said. “Students can also collaborate with one another to create anything from karaoke videos to vlog projects. The great thing about technology is that students can collaborate with others without geographical restraint.”

For the last 10 years, Cayari has researched online music making and virtual performances, focusing most of his attention on YouTube and how the platform has changed the way people create, consume and share music. According to Cayari, online music-making projects, research, technologies and literacies occur within three dispositions:

  • Do-it-yourself: “There are many avenues for do-it-yourself projects thanks to social media or audio recording websites like SoundCloud or Bandcamp. This method is great for students because it allows them to learn for themselves about the aspects that go into music recording projects.”
  • Do-it-with-others: “Online music making isn’t a new concept. For many years, people have been collaborating with others to create music and connect with one another through the production of music.”
  • Do-it-for-others: “These type of performances are organized projects where individuals submit their own performances and someone else pulls it all together. Everyone from the organizer to the performers to the editors have a hand in creating something for the enjoyment of others.”

This week, a special issue of the Journal for Popular Music Education, co-edited by Cayari and Janice Waldron from Windsor University in Ontario, Canada, was released that focuses on learning, performing and teaching, which includes international research about how music teachers are using the internet to teach students.

Lukas Nelson ’56 Les Paul Junior Available

For the Lukas Nelson ’56 Les Paul Junior spec sheet and info: Here.

By leveraging its iconic past and leaning into an innovative future, Gibson has set the stage for the next era of shaping sound for present and future with instruments that nurture new players across generations and genres of music. Gibson and Lukas Nelson have announced today, theyߣll release the first-ever Gibson USA Lukas Nelson 56’ Les Paul Junior. Later tonight, tune-in to watch a Live Q&A with Lukas Nelson about his musical history and songwriting at 7:00pm CTon Gibson TV. Lukas will answer questions from fans and share a special announcement from his studio in Los Angeles, tonight at 7:00pm CT/5:00pm PT/8:00pm ET,all on Gibson TV.
Lukas Nelson knows all about legacies, indeed he’s been hard at work carving his own for most of his young, but extremely eventful life. This customized Gibson Les Paul Junior is inspired by Lukas Nelson’s own 1956 Junior. “The beauty of this guitar is that it is very versatile with the sound. In fact, I can get a lot of different tones just from the P90 and the way that I attack the strings and through the intonation and the vibrato that I give,” says Lukas Nelson. If I hit it lighter, it doesn’t break up as much. If I get into it, it gets a lot of grit and dirt and breaks up. It’s a versatile tone, which Iߣm pretty grateful for. Frankly, Gibson has been nothing but incredible to us to me since I’ve met them. And this guitar has taken me on a long journey. It’s taken me to some amazing places, and I hope that a lot of other people get the same opportunity with their version of my guitar.

With his primary focus as the front man of Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Realover the release of six studio albums, four Eps and world tours, Lukas and the band have evolved into an emergent and vital force in American music. In song after song, on stage after stage, Lukas and POTR have sharpened the edges of their singular sound, one that nods to their influences while also pushing forward into uncharted territory. The never-ending road also beckons with additional projects, Lukas and his band POTR’s frequent performances as Neil Young’s band and of course, performances alongside his father in Willie Nelson & Family.

Lukas and Gibson’s Luthiers worked closely to develop his Lukas Nelson 56’ Les Paul Junior. Several prototypes were road tested by Lukas on tour over this past year and the end result is Lukas’s vision. Based off his beloved 1956 Les Paul Junior which has been his main guitar for several years, the Lukas Nelson 56’ Les Paul Junior is rooted in tradition with some modern enhancements. Like his original, the single cutaway slab Mahogany body, and neck are crafted of genuine Mahogany for its resonant tonal characteristics and moderate weight. The fat 50’s-style neck profile feels smooth and comfortable while providing rigidity and sustain. It features a Rosewood fingerboard with dot inlays and medium jumbo frets for a vintage feel with modern playability. Finished in a deluxe satin Vintage Sunburst, this shade was developed to capture the same vintage patina of his original. The single, dog-ear P-90 pickup features Alnico III magnets and is voiced to replicate the tonal response that Lukas requires. The single volume and tone controls have gold speed knobs (as used in 1956) and are hand-wired featuring an orange drop capacitor and original spec 500k vintage audio taper pots. The aged nickel-plated hardware includes Vintage Deluxe strip style tuners w/ white buttons like the originals but feature a higher gear ratio for improved performance. The 50’s style wraparound bridge provides the same look and solid resonance as the original, but it is made with a stealthy compensation contour to improve intonation accuracy. The new Gibson USA Lukas Nelson 56’ Les Paul Junior will officially be available worldwide at all Authorized Gibson Dealers in August 2020.

Earlier this year, Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real released Naked Garden via Fantasy Records. A companion to the group’s highly acclaimed 2019 LP, Turn Off The News (Build A Garden), this 15-track collectioncaptures the joyful spirit and creative intensity of POTR’s News with previously unreleased songs and alternate cuts that came out of those sessions at Shangri-La and Village Studios. Wide-ranging in scope and minimalist production Naked Garden embodies the band’s shared spiritual connection and consummate musical chemistry. Guitarist/vocalist Lukas Nelson and his band, Promise of the Real which is rounded out by bassist Corey McCormick, drummer Anthony LoGerfo, percussionist Tato Melgarand multi-instrumentalist Logan Metz, teamed with John Alagia to produce Naked Garden. A few of the album’s many highlights includes the studio version of fan favorite Entirely Different Stars, the plaintive romance of Movie In My Mind, a rough, early-stage version of Bad Case, and Lukas’ unearthly falsetto on the classic country waltz, The Way You Say Goodbye. Listen to the lead track, a supercharged, alternate version of Civilized Hell HERE and watch the trailer for Naked Garden HERE.

Guitarists to Follow In 2020

Guitars are among the best known musical instruments in the world, given that they have been around for a very long time, so it would be easy to assume that they no longer hold secrets, but some artists are working to discover new styles and bring their skills to the next level every day.

If you are into guitars as well and you know what an analog delay pedal is and you are also using one, then you surely need to take a look at what some of these next guitarists have to say in terms of their music, given the instrument’s history

We’ve done our research and picked guitarists that are bringing something new to this industry, given their diverse backgrounds and experiences, so let’s see who they are.

To be followed this year

Vanny Tonon is from Italy, a country famous for its artistic expression throughout history. With a unique style, Vanny usually starts from a melodic idea and a chord progression, and chooses one of these, but the most important part is that he uses his emotions to guide the sound. He sees music as color, so you can say that he is actually sort of painting with the sound.

The next guitarist on our list is Sarah Joanne from the United States. What makes her style unique is the fact that she likes experimenting with both distorted and clean sounds in every song she makes. She is also in a band that has a diverse sound, including elements from soft piano to harsher metal ones. She, too, is using her emotions when writing songs and then sees the end result.

You should also check out what Daniel Donato has to say in terms of playing the guitar. What defines his style is a passion for technical ability and the joy that every guitarist feels when learning to play for the first time. This is what keeps his sounds fresh, but he also likes incorporating elements from old-school country players, as well as from the psychedelic era.

Felix Martin from Venezuela deserved a closer look as well, given that he plays two guitars as one. This is what makes his music stand out, as he mixes two melodies, two chords, as well as various percussion techniques.

If you want to take your own skills to the next level, he is definitely a guitarist that you can take a look at for inspiration, especially since he uses the tapping technique, instead of the normal fingerstyle guitar playing one.

Talented guitarists around the world

What makes today’s world exciting is the lack of limitations, and this can be seen in every aspect of our lives. Therefore, we turned an eye to Australia for inspiration as well, and this is where we found Mark Fisher. Also known as Phisha, this talented musician brings thoughtful lyrics, songwriting techniques, as well as vocal abilities together to make his own music.

Also in Australia, there’s Andrew Higgs, another talented guitarist that can be found by the name “King of the North”. He plays with a lot of attack and he strives to perform every song, not simply play it, and that includes singing.

Moving on to the United States, we’ve also taken a look at Ando San Washington, a guitarist who uses hip-hop beats, as well as progressive guitar elements into the same song. The result is a fresh sound that uses thumping as a technique. What makes his music truly interesting is the fact that he creates melody and harmony using different chords.

You should also take a look at Lore Paz Ampuero, a Chilean guitarist that combines two different trends in her music. She gets her inspiration from jazz for clean sounds, but also adds a modern touch using various techniques, such as tapping, fingerstyle, and thumping. She developed her style by listening to a lot of modern artists, and she constantly looks for innovation and creative ways to get inspired.

Another guitarist that you want to keep in mind this year is Kris Xenopolous from South Africa. His music is a combination of everything he has heard, but it can be translated into a jazz-fusion with metal, pop, and hip-hop elements. He is into experimenting with modern guitar-playing techniques such as thumping and tapping, so we can certainly expect many other interesting sounds from him.

Izzy Escobar

Overcoming hardship and transforming it into triumph through music is nothing new, but it takes a unique talent to do it in a way that truly leaves an impact on one’s psyche. Such is the case with Singer-Songwriter Izzy Escobar, whose debut single “Broken Wings” (Available everywhere digitally on June 29th!) showcases her commanding attitude and powerful vocal prowess in very distinct fashion.

With “Broken Wings”, subtle synth work and a stomping beat lay the groundwork for an alluring lyrical journey of determination shining through pain as Escobar sings Right here in my place all these walls suddenly disintegrate // Into dust, into here, it flies away out of the atmosphere // And I feel like I can fly with broken wings”.

“I believed that music and song had the potential to change lives because of the way it is able to positively affect our emotions and perceptions”

WATCH: “BROKEN WINGS” OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO

Izzy Escobar’s music is about loving one another the way we want to be loved ourselves. And having FUN along the way! Rising from a “never ending circle of violence” from an abusive stepparent, where she was voiceless in protecting her own family members, she began channeling that pain into lyrics–and eventually songs–at a very young age. “I began to write words, and soon realized that I could synchronize the words in my diary with the tune in my head” says the Massachusetts native, whose latest singles show how far she’s come from that frightened girl to a strong, capable woman who wants to spread her message of hope and strength to those who may face their own struggles. “A few years later, as I read through that same songbook, I noticed that I had made a shift from finding my voice to helping those who couldn’t find their own”.

As she continued on her musical journey, Escobar took to not only writing and singing, but reading sheet music and studying music theory, as well as playing the violin, guitar, and piano. “I believe that to be a healthy human being, we must have an idea of who we are, and what our existence is. But the promise of a home safe from physical abuse and fear remains elusive for many millions of women and children in this country. Now an accomplished singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, she continues to channel her strengths into giving a voice to the voiceless, and helping those who face the same fate as she had in her youth.

A Jovial Jashn

Superheroes walking the corridors, live art performances, a car show, and a DJ night. What sounds like a unforgettable music festival was the star attraction of the Dubai International Academic City where its annual event titled Jashn was celebrated. Literally translating to ‘celebration’, JASHN 2018 stepped up to the occasion by centering on a theme that seemed to be at the tip of everyone’s tongue-comic books and movies. The Dubai Campus of BITS Pilani raised the bar once again by setting up one of the most elaborate stages in the region inviting the best to showcase their skills. And with the atmosphere of Marvel and DC to drive the festivities, the event proved to be a great crowd-puller for students and teens. The inaugural ceremony occurred on the 16th of April and was marked by a musical evening by the musicians of the campus followed by a stage play round and a fashion show by the group called Drape. To conclude the evening in a round of laughter and splits, popular Indian comic Biswa Kalyan took to the stage and left the audience wanting for more.

The second day for was an energetic extension with further competitions defined by quizzes, musicals, musical battles and a lot more. The next day attracted a great crowd for the detective themed scavenge hunt titled ‘CSI’ followed by instrumental competitions, dancing doubles, a fashion show round and a guest performance by the artist Rooh. All the while, the crowd outside were being entertained by a high octane road show featuring the best cars. But the level had to be raised further as the campus closed the event with a awe-inspiring round of competitions attracting students with an artistic touch with a solo stage play round, a poetry slam competition, a group dance show off and finally a DJ performance by the duo Sunburn- Siana Caherine and Zephyrtone.

JASHN 2018 La Comic Fiesta had achieved the same mass appeal of the very comic brands it endorsed and plans on scaling new heights with the coming years.
