Three Quick Exercises

By Anthony Sovinsky x Vaughn Lowery x Reid Urban

Ever feel like you don’t have time to make it to the gym or just confused on what you need to do to improve your fitness? Well then you’re in luck! Here are 3 exercises that you can do at home or at the office that will improve both your fitness in strength, mobility, and endurance.

1. Squat

The squat is an excellent exercise to develop lower body strength and improve hip function. Tight hips occur from not using your hips through their full range of motion i.e. sitting in a chair or couch all day. This results in referred pain, most commonly in the lower back and knees. Not only will deep squatting help loosen the muscles surrounding the hips and knees while relieving knee and back pain, but it will also “wake up” the larger muscles of the lower body that have otherwise been ignored from long periods of sitting. This will cause a spike in your energy demands (metabolism) causing you to build muscle, burn more calories, and over time, burn more fat.

Here’s how :

Stand with your feet just outside shoulder-width apart. Squeeze your butt and suck your belly in with arms extended in front of your body. This is your starting position.

Lower your body down, keeping your feet flat and hands out front for balance until your hips have lowered past your knees then stand back up. Congrats! That’s a squat!

Try to aim for 25 repetitions for 4 sets and keep it under 10 minutes.

2. Lunge

The lunge is another great exercise that addresses single leg and hip strength and stability. Lunging will help make both legs equally strong. When done correctly, it will help correct hip imbalances that result in low back pain and bad posture. This variation is a bit tougher than the squat as one leg is responsible for lifting most of your body weight back to a standing position, making the lunge a key component to your lower body strength routine. Lunging will isolate the glutes, which happen to be the powerhouse of the human body, so you can expect major muscle gain and calorie burn from this exercise.

Here’s how :

Start standing tall with both feet together. Take a large step forward as if you are trying to step over a puddle.

Once you are in a split stance, find your balance and slowly take a knee with the back leg. Focus on keeping the entire front foot in contact with ground the entire time.

Once you have taken a knee, press yourself up with the front leg and allow your back leg to meet the front one so you are back to a standing position.

Now repeat! Try this for 10-20 steps for 4 sets.

3. Wall Stretch

This exercise is more so to address posture issues that come from long periods of computer work, cell phone usage, and driving. All these forward-reaching activities cause our shoulders to round forward, causing neck pain and adaptively tight chest muscles and weak, overstretched back muscles. The best way to combat this imbalance with no weights is to do a wall stretch and get the arms over the head more frequently.

Here’s how :

Find a wall and lean on it back first. Bring your feet out in front if you and assume a quarter squat so you can get your entire back flush with the wall.

Lift your arms up and attempt to place the back of your wrists on the wall with triceps parallel to the floor.

Reach up towards the ceiling while trying to maintain contact with the wall and your wrist the entire time.

You will notice a deep stretch across the chest and front of shoulders while getting a good “squeeze” between the shoulder blades. Overtime, this exercise will help reset proper balance between the chest, back, and shoulders.

Try this for 4 sets of 15-20 repetitions. You can pair this with the squats or lunges or both!

Go get after it! These can be done anytime and anywhere. These exercises will give you the most bang for your buck. Whether you’re trying to burn calories, relieve pain, or build strength these are absolutely key to live a healthy active life!

Lime Scooters

By Vaughn Lowery x Krishan Narsinghani x Alexandria Baiz

Across the globe, Lime scooters are the newest ride for transportation and commute. One may have seen these green-tinted electric motor scooters zooming down major city roads in Los Angeles, Paris and even university campuses. With over 100 markets and 5 countries there is plenty of supply, and all one needs to do is download the Lime app to find the nearest scooter. With LED front lamps, green recessed lighting and red LED taillights for nighttime riders, Limes are functional at all times of the day in major cities. Technology in automation advances as the little green boxes on each scooter contain a GPS system and 3G built-in hardware to track the location and route of each ride. Aggregating routes and location data is vital for cities so that there is proof of this pilot program performance and for future infrastructure to be aware of heavily utilized routes.

The logistics of the Lime scooters are easy to follow with instructions accessible every step of the way on the Lime app. Depending on location, (ex. California State Law) riders must be 18 and over and required to wear a helmet. Helmets are offered for free through the local business partners, which can also be found on the app. To avoid clutter on streets, users are required to submit parking photos at the end of each ride to ensure the scooter is parked responsibly. Docking stations are also being added – physical locations like Monrovia and Santa Monica will soon be paired with designated parking locations.

Rides are effortless and affordable. Costing one dollar to unlock and fifteen cents per minute, rates beat that of car share fares. Take a solo trip to get to work or visit a hot attraction with a group of friends. 360 Magazine had the opportunity of riding a group of scooters throughout Los Angeles, revealing a beautiful scenic ride for any tourist or local in the area. Explore the Ballona Creek bike path, an 8.8-mile-long waterway that extends as a shortcut from Central LA to the coast of Venice. Enjoy a traffic-free, uninterrupted riding trail that offers rest stops and views for a perfect sunny day.

Transforming the mobility of cities into a clean environment is a major win in Los Angeles, especially with limited transit systems, it’s a great alternative to keep traffic and pollution under control. Diving in further, Lime travels up to 20 miles in distance and speeds up to 14.8 MPH. Lime Access offers a 95% discount on pedal bike rides and 50% discount on electric scooter rides. Lime Access is eligible for riders who belong to any state/federally-run assistance program in order to make Lime accessible for all. Sony Pictures Entertainment and Republic Records have teamed up for the first time to create a contemporary musical companion for the upcoming feature film. The two camps worked closely to create a soundtrack in support of the multi-cultural protagonist of the film, Miles Morales. From the creative minds behind The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street, Phil Lord & Christopher Miller, comes Spider-Man™: Into the Spider-Verse, a fresh vision of a different Spider-Man Universe, with a groundbreaking visual style that’s the first of its kind.  Spider-Man™: Into the Spider-Verse introduces Brooklyn teen Miles Morales, and the limitless possibilities of the Spider-Verse, where more than one can wear the mask. Directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman from a screenplay by Phil Lord and Rodney Rothman and story by Phil Lord, the producers are Avi Arad, Amy Pascal, Phil Lord & Christopher Miller and Christina Steinberg.

“Post and Swae have delivered a song that’s both heroic and emotional, which is exactly what a Spider-Man story needs.  It’s anthemic, but also heartfelt — the perfect soundtrack for Miles to discover the Spider-Man inside himself,” said Spring Aspers, Head of Music, Creative Affairs Worldwide for Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Motion Picture Group.

LIFE-SAVING TECH × JAGUAR

Audible Vehicle Alert System Developed by Jaguar to Protect Road Users

Jaguar has developed an Audible Vehicle Alert System (AVAS) for the I-PACE, to warn vulnerable road users as the electric vehicle approaches

With no engine sound, the electric Jaguar I-PACE required a new way to warn blind, visually impaired and other vulnerable road users   of its approach at low speed.

Jaguar has designed a unique Audible Vehicle Alert System (AVAS) for its first electric vehicle – developing a sound that can be heard at speeds up to 20km/h and exceeds the 56dB(A) minimum required by forthcoming European legislation for all new electric vehicles (EVs) from July 2019.

The I-PACE’s sound was tested by members of Guide Dogs for the Blind, the UK’s leading charity for people affected by sight loss, as part of the testing undertaken by Jaguar. It also marks the start of an on-going relationship between the two organisations.

Jaguar’s engineers worked for four years to develop a soundtrack that is audible yet discreet and cannot be heard from inside the vehicle. Initial attempts to create a noise inspired by the sound of sci-fi spacecraft had to be shelved after pedestrians reacted by looking up to the sky, rather than at the road, as the vehicle approached.

Engineers tested sounds in a number of environments, including an anechoic chamber (specialist echo-free room) and various urban scenarios, before settling on the final sound for the I-PACE. It is emitted from a speaker located behind the front grille, can be heard in every direction and cannot be disengaged.

The alert increases in pitch and volume in line with the speed of the vehicle and, when in reverse, is accompanied by an additional tone that indicates the change in direction. AVAS is not required at higher speeds as there is sufficient wind and tyre noise for pedestrians to hear the zero-emissions vehicle approaching.

Iain Suffield, Jaguar NVH Technical Specialist, said:

“The absence of traditional engine noise from electric vehicles creates a problem for vulnerable pedestrians, such as the blind or visually impaired. This is especially true at low speeds in town centres and car parks. We developed the Audible Vehicle Alert System for the I-PACE to ensure the safety of all road users. Our potentially life-saving technology cannot be switched off and as the leading charity for people with sight loss, we are pleased to have the support of Guide Dogs to ensure real people are at the heart of our product testing.”
