Schloss Elmau

Geoffrey Weill Associates has been appointed US public relations representative of Schloss Elmau, a breathtaking spa and cultural resort in the Bavarian Alps. Once characterized as “an Aman resort on steroids,” Schloss Elmau is a member of Leading Hotels of the World and is arguably both the most luxurious spa resort in Germany and one of the most unusual resort hotels in the world.

“Schloss Elmau is everything you wouldn’t expect when you hear the words ‘resort in Bavaria,'” says Geoffrey Weill, “there are no thatched roofs, no flower-filled window-boxes, no lederhosen, no Alpine cutesiness. Instead, you discover a world-class combination of Jugendstil and post-modern architecture, utter luxury, total understatement and casualness, extraordinary food, a cultural program that could shame many of the world’s most sophisticated cities — a paradise for families and couples, all set high in the Alps with a view of the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest mountain.”

Schloss Elmau is separated into two wings, a five-minute stroll apart. The original “Schloss” combines its original Jugendstil architecture with awe-inspiring 21st-century details. It contains 115 rooms and suites, five restaurants (one with a Michelin star), a kids’ club, the largest bookstore in any hotel in Germany, and the original concert hall. The “Retreat” opened in 2015 with 47 spacious suites, three restaurants and a gym and yoga pavilion. All told, Schloss Elmau has six separate and lavish spas, some for families, others for adults only, including one discreetly sited for nude bathing and sunbathing. Outdoor pools are heated 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to 85 degrees Fahrenheit. There are year-round programs for children and teens, and copious opportunities for hiking, tennis and skiing.

The ambiance of Schloss Elmau separates it from every other spa resort not only in Germany, but in most of Europe. There is never a dress code, children are welcomed, and there is not a breath of enforced formality. Guests can relax in spacious lounges and order Dom Perignon and foie gras and, at the next table, their kids can play battleships and munch hot dogs. The goal is to provide guests with a carefree stay in an atmosphere of health, fitness, learning and cultural enrichment, with some 200 concerts and talks scheduled throughout the year. In 2015, the G7 met at Schloss Elmau with the participation of US President Barack Obama, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President François Hollande and British Prime Minister David Cameron.

The original Schloss was opened in 1916 as a cultural retreat by Dr. Johannes Müller (1864-1949), a renowned Protestant theologian and philosopher and has a rich and complex history. Today, the resort is owned and overseen by his grandson: entrepreneur, visionary and hotelier, Dietmar Mueller-Elmau.

Schloss Elmau is a sister hotel to the Hotel Orania.Berlin, a 21st-century hotel set in an art-nouveau landmark building in the hip Berlin neighborhood of Kreuzberg.

AUTOMOBILI PININFARINA ANNOUNCE MAJOR DEAL IN BID TO BECOME WORLD’S MOST SUSTAINABLE LUXURY EV CAR BRAND

The world’s newest car brand confirms new HQin Munich and senior management line up, as well as a €50M partnership deal with Rimac

Automobili Pininfarina has today made a series of major announcements from its new headquarters that will see it strengthen its management team, secure cutting-edge, world-beating electric powertrain technology, and put Formula 1 and Formula E experience in the PF0 hypercar driving seat.

Automobili Pininfarina was announced in Rome in April 2018 as the world’s newest car brand, with an ambition to sustainably develop and produce fully-electric, ultra-luxury cars at the pinnacle of design and desirability.

The company will offer a range of cars designed and hand-crafted by legendary Italian automotive styling house Pininfarina SpA. The first, an ultra-exclusive, luxury electric hypercar codenamed PF0, will be launched at the Geneva Motor Show in 2019, with production beginning in 2020.

Munich has been confirmed as the company’s corporate and operational headquarters, providing access to expertise and engineering networks in arguably the world’s most successful and technologically advanced car market. Munich’sproximity to northern Italy, the home of Pininfarina SpA – who will design and build the PF0 under contract – was also key to CEO Michael Perschke’sselection of it for the global headquarters.

At a press conference today, CEO Michael Perschkeand special guest Dr. Pawan Goenka, Mahindra & Mahindra Managing Director, also introduced an impressive line up of partners and collaborators –including a unique technical partnership with RimacAutomobili to provide battery and drivetrain expertise, software, and hardware, in a contract worth up to €50m.

As well as the partnership with Rimac, AutomobiliPininfarina also announced Nick Heidfeld as their new Development Driver. With nearly 20 years of top-level motor racing experience to call upon, Nick will be responsible for honing the PF0 vehicle dynamics programme from the beginning of 2019, with a clear personal ambition: to help develop the most enjoyable electric performance car in the world.

Perschke said: “Today marks a significant step for the launch of a range of Pininfarina-branded cars and for PF0, which will be the most powerful Italian-built sports car in history – and the first luxury hypercar to be conceived in Germany. We have developed a sophisticated brief to deliver a ground-breaking all-electric hyper GT car to clients from 2020, and now we are curating the partners and suppliers to deliver this dream. The results will be electrifying for owners of Automobili Pininfarina cars in the future!”

Study: Texting While Driving

DriversEd.com—the leading online driving school—today released its 2018 Distracted Driving in America Report. An inaugural initiative, the report examines drivers’ behind-the-wheel behaviors, habits and decisions—providing insight into how Americans, while driving, engage in a number of activities, from texting to drinking to YouTube to Snapchat to marijuana and more.

Survey data found that 73% of drivers admit to reading text messages while behind the wheel, and 54% admit to typing texting messages while behind the wheel. Meanwhile, only 39% of drivers say that while driving they check and use their phone more often than they probably should.

“There’s an argument to be made that, in 2018, distracted driving is actually a worse problem in America than drunk driving,” said Laura Adams, safety and education analyst at DriversEd.com. “The fact that so many people are texting and driving is alarming, but not surprising. However, what is shocking is the millions of people who are watching Netflix and YouTube videos while driving. These drivers may as well be playing behind-the-wheel Russian Roulette.”

Among the study’s findings:

·         TEXTING: 59% of drivers admit that they read texts while at a red light, while 41% admit to doing so while stuck in traffic, 30% at a stop sign and 11% moving on the road. In addition, 43% of drivers admit that they type texts while at a red light, while 31% admit to doing so while stuck in traffic, 24% while at a stop sign and 8% while moving on the road.

·         SOCIAL MEDIA: 18% of drivers report that they check social media while behind the wheel, with 16% saying that they have checked Facebook, 11% Instagram, 9% Instagram and 6% Twitter.

·         VIDEO WATCHING: 8% of drivers admit that they have watched YouTube videos while behind the wheel, with 6% saying that they have watched Facebook videos, 5% Instagram, 5% Snapchat and 4% Netflix.

·         MARIJUANA: 84% of Americans say driving after drinking alcohol is more dangerous than driving after smoking marijuana. Meanwhile, 10% of drivers report that in the past 12 months they have driven after smoking or ingesting marijuana.

·         TALKING: 60% of drivers say that they talk on the phone while behind the wheel on speaker, while 20% say they do so with the phone in their hand and 20% say they use headphones. In addition, 52% say that while behind the wheel, they use voice commands on their phone.

·         DRINKING: 32% of drivers report that in the last year they have driven after having one or more drinks. Meanwhile, 34% say they are comfortable driving after one drink, with 19% comfortable after two drinks, 7% after three drinks, 2% after four drinks and 1% after five or more drinks.

When asked, “If you get into an Uber, and you notice the driver checking and using their phone, what do you do?”, 49% said they would say something to the driver, then report them to Uber after the ride; 30% said they would not say anything to the driver, but then report them to Uber after the ride; and 21% said they would do nothing.

“Ultimately, the solution to distracted driving is a combination of awareness, education and individual initiative,” said Adams. “Parents, who are effectively largely responsible for the next generation of drivers, can play an important role by taking steps such as putting their own phones away while behind the wheel, avoiding texting or calling their teens when they know they are driving, and even using some apps, which will disable a driver’s phone while they are driving.”

Lenny Kravitz’s New Mission with TWICE Toothpaste

Brothers Julian and Cody Levine and Lenny Kravitz have joined forces to bring a new kind of oral care brand, Twice, to the beauty & wellnessmarket. The brand is helping consumers take care of their smiles with products designed to positively impact brushing habits and our twice-a-day routines, starting with toothpaste.

Twice will debut a premium toothpaste set, with a unique flavor experience for morning and night. The morning formula, Early Bird, is designed to awaken, while the nighttime formula, Twilight, promotes relaxation. A shocking 35% of Americans do not brush twice a day, and so it is Twice’s mission to help improve this statistic with toothpaste purposefully designed from the inside out.

Founded from a genuine desire to spread healthy smiles across the globe, the Company will give 10 percent of its profits to the GLO Good Foundation, which serves communities in dire need of proper dental care.

“The only thing better than a beautiful smile is giving one to someone else,” says co-founder Julian Levine. “With Twice, we aim to offer innovative and highly effective oral care products that also make an impact – from as small as looking great on your bathroom counter to as meaningful as changing someone’s life by alleviating physical and emotional pain through dental care.”

The Levine brothers became inspired to create Twice in 2016, during a volunteer mission with GLO Good Foundation and Lenny’s Let Love Rule Foundation in Eleuthera, Bahamas, where the organizations had teamed up to host a free dental clinic. There, the brothers came face-to-face with hundreds of people suffering from all types of oral health diseases, many in serious pain, and saw first hand how grateful they were to receive proper oral care. They had become awakened to the transformational power of a smile and immediately bonded with Lenny over the experience; all three agreed they wanted to do more.

Soon after, the brothers contacted Lenny with the idea to give the oral care industry a makeover with a brand called Twice that would combine healthy and effective ingredients, great taste, and sharp, counter-friendly packaging with a cause: to improve the oral health care crisis. With Twice, they could help significantly increase the number of healthy mouths and confident smiles, and get people everywhere brushing twice a day. Lenny wanted to get involved in a big way, so together they began building the brand as co-founders.

“It’s easy to take for granted something as simple as brushing your teeth, but there are people around the world that look at toothpaste as a luxury,” says co-founder Lenny Kravitz. “Eleuthera is home for me, so the people and this cause are very close to my heart, and there’s nothing I want more than to see them happy, healthy and smiling. That’s why I’m committed to making Twice a reality and growing this important mission.”

The Company’s philosophy is that overall health starts in the mouth. Twice toothpaste contains a good-for-you ingredient profile power-packed with antioxidants and vitamins A, C, E, plant-based extract aloe vera, and unique functional flavors. Designed to do it all, the formula has dentist-trusted and proven ingredients to help whiten teeth, remineralize enamel, prevent painful cavities, and protect against sensitivity. Twice is also free of unnecessary ingredients known to cause irritation traditionally found in toothpaste. While the brothers are not dentists – Julian spent years as an investor and Cody as a creative marketer – they grew up watching their father, a well-respected dentist and inventor, becoming inspired and well-versed in the industry as a result. They researched and tested every product on the market, and tapped a network of renowned dentists, chemists, flavor specialists, and manufacturers to create their first two unique products:

Early Bird: a blast of morning mint that combines wintergreen and peppermint for your anytime wakeup call.
Twilight: a relaxing nighttime toothpaste that blends refreshing peppermint with vanilla and a gentle touch of lavender for a smooth transition from morning to night.

“Products that care for your smile should make you smile. So we set out to create the best toothpaste that makes an impact – one that we love using, every morning and every night,” says co-founder Cody Levine. “With a focus on experience, efficacy, design, and social responsibility, we believe it’s time to think Twice about your toothpaste.

Twice contains high-quality, globally-sourced ingredients, and is formulated and manufactured in the USA. The toothpaste is responsibly made to be non-GMO, vegan, gluten-free and never tested on animals. Starting in September 2018, the duo is available for $18.99 at www.smiletwice.com.

Dating While Sober

When it comes to dating, “let’s grab a drink” is often the go to first date invitation. Many opt to cure first date jitters with a libation or two to “chill out” and feel more comfortable.  What happens if you are a recovering alcoholic and you can’t opt for “liquid courage” to get you through those awkward dating moments? For approximately 30-million Americans who identify as recovering from alcohol abuse, dating while sober is often a tricky reality. With tips on how to pass on booze but not on love, is Dr. Duy Nguyen, D.O., a Board-Certified Psychiatrist in General Psychiatry practicing at Beachway Therapy Center, a drug and alcohol rehab in Boynton Beach, Florida.

1. Take the lead and suggest a dry date.

The easiest way to maintain sobriety is to avoid situations where alcohol is present. Having several alcohol-free dating options already in mind can empower you to steer the date in a dry direction more easily.  Opt for daytime dates that are more activity focused, get you outside enjoying quality time together away from any bar. “Doing activities that aren’t conducive to drinking such as museums, galleries, fairs, and festivals could be fun. People who don’t drink often are the most creative when it comes to choosing fun dates,” says Dr. Nguyen.

2. Create your new story and get honest.

In the spirit of 12-step recovery, which emphasizes the importance of self-honesty, aim for truthfulness in how you present yourself. If an on-line dating profile questionnaire asks how much you drink, don’t let fear about what others may think prevent you from checking the “Never” box. “Frame out when and how you plan to reveal what inspired your decision not to drink. Simply saying that you no longer drink alcohol is enough in the beginning. When you get to know someone better then share your story from a place of an achievement you’re proud of,” Dr. Nguyen encourages.

3. Get clear on what you want in a partner.

If someone has an issue with you not drinking, then they clearly aren’t the right person for you and that’s okay. Decide if you would prefer to date someone who understands recovery, may even have been through it themselves or is a health enthusiast who also doesn’t drink.

Dr. Nguyen says that, “While there are a lot of benefits to dating those in recovery, it can also lead to risky situations. There are often times in which one partner relapses and the other follows, although this isn’t a guarantee.”

If you decide that you want to date non-recovering people, it’s best to have some clean time under your belt and be solid in your recovery, as this can lead to tempting situations.

4. Trust your gut, nerves can be a good indicator!

Your nerves could very well be indicating that there is something there. That is, chemistry. Dr. Nguyen says, “Alcohol typically dulls our sensory and emotional experience so without it we’re open to the raucous disarray of emotions that warp us when we’re under the spell of a potential new love. Of course, that doesn’t make the experience of a new relationship any easier. Try to reframe the experience in a way that embraces these jitters.”

5. Don’t make love the new addiction.

On top of the excitement that comes with meeting a potential new partner, scientifically we produce numerous hormones that can increase that excitement. “A new relationship can very much become a replacement drug,” says Dr. Nguyen. He adds, “Many confuse infatuation with love, so it’s a good idea is to take it slowly. Again, make sure that you are at a place emotionally that can handle all of the new feelings that come with dating and be prepared if relationships don’t end the way you expected.”

6. Embrace the awkward.

“Being sober will probably increase the number of awkward pauses, says Dr. Nguyen. “We’re sharper and more present when we’re not drinking which can actually be used as an advantage to navigate conversation and ask the other person about themselves which enables a deeper connection and more trust,” he adds.

7. Keep first dates short.

The majority of first dates that extend into the wee hours of the morning are alcohol fueled and can lead to unintended promiscuity. Dr. Nguyen suggests going into the date with a self-imposed time frame in mind, two to three hours and then making another date if there’s interest. For a recovering alcoholic, especially someone in early sobriety, being “forced” to bar hop will be like white knuckling it on a scary roller coaster.

If you feel dating is hard enough and are more comfortable with dating others who practice a sober lifestyle, there are many options:
