Why Whole Grain?

Whole grain can contribute to health by changing intestinal serotonin production

Adults consuming whole grain rye have lower plasma serotonin levels than people eating low-fibre wheat bread, according to a recent study by the University of Eastern Finland and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). In the study, the consumption of cereal fibre from rye or wheat was also found to reduce serotonin levels in the colon of mice. In light of the results, the health benefits of whole grain cereals may be linked, at least in part, to the alteration of serotonin production in the intestines, where the majority of the body’s serotonin is produced. The results of were published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

The consumption of whole grain cereals has been associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some cancers, but the underlying mechanisms are still poorly understood. There may be effects on bioactive compounds contained in whole grains, phytochemicals and fibres from which different metabolites are produced by intestinal bacteria.

The new study explored how the consumption of wholegrain rye modulates concentrations of different metabolites in the bloodstream. The study employed untargeted metabolite profiling, also known as metabolomics, which can simultaneously detect numerous metabolites, including those previously unknown.

For the first four weeks of the study, the participants ate 6 to 10 slices a day of low-fibre wheat bread, and then another four weeks the same amount of wholegrain rye bread or wheat bread supplemented with rye fibre. Otherwise, they didn’t change their diet. At the end of both periods, they gave blood samples, which were analysed by a combination of liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. Their plasma metabolite profiles between the different diet periods were then compared.

The consumption of wholegrain rye led to, among other things, significantly lower serotonin concentrations when compared to consumption of low-fibre wheat bread. The researchers also tested in mice whether the addition of cereal fibre to the diet changes serotonin production in the intestine. The diet of the mice was supplemented for nine weeks with rye bran, wheat bran or cellulose flour. The mice receiving rye or wheat bran had significantly lower serotonin in their colon. Serotonin is best known as a neurotransmitter in the brain. However, serotonin produced by the intestines remains separated from the brain, serving various peripheral functions including modulation of gut’s motility. Increased blood serotonin has also been associated with high blood glucose levels.

“Whole grain, on the other hand, is known to reduce the risk of diabetes, and on the basis of these new results, the effect could at least partly be due to a decrease in serotonin levels,” says Academy Research Fellow Kati Hanhineva from the University of Eastern Finland.

The researchers are also interested in the association of serotonin with colorectal cancer.
“Some recent studies have found cancer patients to have higher plasma serotonin levels than healthy controls,” Scientist Pekka Keski-Rahkonen from IARC adds.

The consumption of wholegrain rye bread was also associated with lower plasma concentrations of taurine, glycerophosphocholine and two endogenous glycerophospholipids. In addition, the researchers identified 15 rye phytochemicals whose levels in the bloodstream increased with the consumption of rye fibre.

Bene Drops “Evil Spider”

Hailing from the suburbs of Auckland, 19-year-old indie pop artist Bene returns with her latest single “Evil Spider,” out today—listen HERE! Coming off the heels of her Gold-Certified hit “Soaked,” the up and coming singer and songwriter also announces her upcoming debut EP is set for release on June 28.

Of “Evil Spider,” Bene says, “‘Evil Spider’ is about wanting someone that’s already taken. When writing the song, I didn’t wanna make the lyrics too obviously evil, so I thought I’d turn myself into the spider, making it a lil lighter and making the song revolve around me weaving webs to lure the person, catch ‘em like a spider then reel them in. I remember humming ‘Incy Wincy Spider’ in the studio, which inspired the playful vibe of the song.”

Bene has emerged as New Zealand’s artist to watch with her chart-topping hit “Soaked,” which quickly climbed Spotify’s Viral Charts, accumulated over 17 million streams to date, charted on Australia’s Triple J radio’s Hottest 100 of 2018 and held the number one spot on New Zealand’s Shazam Top 100 for two months, not to mention achieved Gold Certification in New Zealand and Australia. With endorsements from Zane Lowe and Apple’s Beats1 radio, Bene went from playing her first small club gig to her first arena show—opening for longtime role model Lily Allen—in a matter of months.

In support of “Evil Spider” and her upcoming debut EP, Bene will be performing at New York’s Mercury Lounge on June 17. Tickets are available now HERE.

Yoshi Flower releases New Song and Video

Yoshi Flower comes back with the latest track “Validation”, out now on Rock Mafia/Interscope Records. Earlier this year Paper Magazine named Yoshi Flower as one of their 100 names worth getting to know in advance. Check out the video shot in Southern California, HERE

The up-tempo, electronic/trap tune begins with Yoshi delicately singing “you’re so beautiful to me, can’t you see,” however, the song is not as sweet as his voice sounds. His lyrics debate the constant feeling we seek out more than ever in the era of social media – “validation.” Although the internet allows us to easily connect with others and access endless information, the dark side can be unsettling. Yoshi goes on to sing “I just spent a ticket on these new dress clothes, you’re not impressed though…just searching for validation…” The nostalgic visual, directed by Alex McDonnell, serves as a metaphor for how everything comes full circle. We’re all on a constant ride of wanting acceptance from one another. Yoshi ends the track the way he began, singing, “but you don’t need no validation. Baby ‘cause, you’re so beautiful to me, can’t you see.”

Last year Yoshi Flower signed to Interscope Records, released his debut mixtape titled, American Raver, toured with blackbear, Elohim, SG Lewis and opened for Dua Lipa. This year, he played his first 5-city headline tour, a string of showcases at SXSW and just last week, wrapped up a sold-out tour opening for K-Rap group, Epik High. Additionally, he released “Dirty Water,” which premiered on HYPEBEAST and led to L’Officiel calling the track a “demonstrative of Flower’s ability to transcend multiple genres of music, as he continues to elevate his eclectic sound by blending hip hop with electronic-pop, creating music that is not only of the moment but is uniquely his.” Yoshi continues to work on new music and is set to play Lollapalooza in August.

Urban Electric Artist Aazar Releases New Single

Following a recent track with Grammy winning, dance-duo, The Chainsmokers, French DJ and producer, Aazar is just time for the summer with his debut single (via Interscope Records) – “Diva (featuring Swae Lee & Tove Lo)” – the rhythmic, hip-swaying banger is available today via all digital retailers.

An Ode to Modern Divas in all their forms: from the most badass to the most glamorous, dancers or boxers. Aazar wanted us to celebrate in a fun and uninhibited way the diversity of the “Carefree Divas” of the World. Watch  Aazar, Swae Lee, and Tove Lo dance around the streets of Los Angeles in the video directed by Original Kids HERE.

The trio teamed up after Aazar was asked about his dream collaborations. “’ Diva’ is a very special record to me. I produced this record a few years ago and I always wanted a vocal on it. Here we are now, with Swae Lee and Tove Lo…I couldn’t be happier” says Aazar of the track. After sharing his appreciation of Swae Lee, Aazar (Alexis Duvivier), coincidentally ran into him at Paris Fashion Week. Without hesitation, he told the Grammy-nominated rapper that he’s a producer, a huge fan and believed that one day they would work together. When he reached out to Swedish singer, Tove Lo, who thought the song “felt like a golden egg dropping into [her] lap,” he wasn’t confident of a response. Tove was immediately on board after finishing a writing session for her album back home in Stockholm. Calling it the “fastest and smoothest collab ever,” she sent her vocals back within forty-eight hours.

More on Aazar: Paris-based producer and member of Point Point, Aazar, has been immensely busy in the studio working on an abundance of exciting new music this year. Having produced official remixes for the likes of David Guetta (Flames) and Martin Solveig (My Love) as well as powerful collaborations with Cesqueaux, Yellow Claw & Moksi (Shanghai Nights Album), Aazar is generating an undeniable buzz around him and his music. His more recent collaboration with The Chainsmokers on groundbreaking track ‘Siren’ has been streaming non-stop worldwide. Aazar’s live career is also on the rise, continuously touring around the world and playing for new audiences in Europe, Asia, USA as well as celebrated festivals such as Tomorrowland, Encore Beach Las Vegas, Mysteryland, the momentum is clear in Aazar conquering these territories. In contrast to the globe-trotting exploits of this artist, Aazar has also been spending a lot of time in the kitchen, as his gourmet alter-ego Chef Aazar. Interesting and tasteful, exactly how Aazar approached everything in 2018 and before; and 2019 is going to build on this trend since he already has some exciting stuff cooking.
