The Meaning Behind Memorial Day

THE MEANING BEHIND MEMORIAL DAY

By: Heather Skovlund-Reibsamen

“How important it is for us to recognize and celebrate our heroes and she-roes.” – Maya Angelou

Memorial Day, once referred to as Decoration Day, is an American holiday in the United States that honors military personnel along as well as mourn those that we have lost along the way. Decoration Day was for decorating graves with flowers, wreaths, and flags. Memorial Day is formerly observed on the last Monday of May each year. It is a solemn day, but it is also important to reflect upon, appreciate and be thankful for the freedom that we all get to enjoy every day in the United States of America.

Many gather with friends and family for barbeques and celebrating the beginning of summer while others visit cemeteries and memorials to remember their loved ones lost. Each year a national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 p.m. local time on Memorial Day. It is important to remember that we are not celebrating the wars, instead we are remembering those who served and those who gave their last breath in order to ensure that the freedoms of our country would be passed on to the next generations. We remember for the price they paid for the cost of our freedom – their lives given so ours could go on.

Memorial Day was originated after the American Civil War, where the United States faced the task of burying and honoring 600,000 to 800,000 Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the bloodiest military conflict in American history. The first commemoration of Memorial Day was held in Arlington National Cemetery on May 30, 1868. On this day, both Union and Confederate soldiers were laid to rest. Over the years, cities across the United States host Memorial Day parades that involve military personnel and members of veterans’ organizations. Americans sometimes wear a red poppy in remembrance of their loved ones, which is a tradition that was born from a World War 1 poem.

In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Memorial Day has a different meaning behind it for every American. Here at 360 Magazine, we were able to get a few opinions from veterans in the United States.

  • Kyle Skovlund: United States Air Force – Memorial Day has a different meaning for me. Growing up, my parents would travel to Brookings, South Dakota each year to put flowers on the graves of those they had lost. When my own daughter passed away, I began doing the same thing. Memorial Day, for me, is a day to reflect on those that have been lost.
  • Michael Miller: United States Air Force – Memorial Day means remembering and celebrating. Remembering the great men and women that gave their life for our great nation and celebrating the freedoms their sacrifices have given us.
  • J.M. Skovlund: United States Army  – “Memorial Day means exactly what it was intended for, to remember and honor our fallen. They went above and beyond for our country, for the soldier on their left and right, and that’s something not everyone can say.” “Go out and remember the fallen the way you see fit. Don’t worry about what everyone else is doing. If it’s having a drink in their honor, do that. If it’s going to their grave to chat, do that. Either way, remember the fallen the best way you can, don’t disgrace them.”

HOTBOII TEAMS WITH FUTURE FOR “NOBODY SPECIAL”

Watch the video for “Nobody Special” HERE

Hotboii is set to make his major festival debut at Rolling Loud Miami in July

Rising Florida rap star Hotboiihas teamed with Atlanta legend Future for new song and video, “Nobody Special.” The track is only Hotboii’ssecond new single since his critically and commercially acclaimed 2020 project, Double O Baby, and it arrivesas the MC prepares for his highly anticipated performance at Rolling Loud Miami. Watch the video, which premiered exclusively on COMPLEX this morning, above or listen to the track HERE.

“Nobody Special,” finds Hotboii going bar-for-bar with one of rap’s great stylists without batting an eye. His 2020 releases—which also included Kut da Fan On—announced Hotboii’s arrival among rap’s elite, and “Nobody Special” solidifies that notion. His melodically tinged flow floats across the beat as he spits bars about trust and loyalty: “If you stand for nothing, you fall for anything/I almost said I loved her, I told her anything.”

The song’s video, directed by Jon J. Visuals, finds Hotboii sporting his signature vertical dreads and chains, clearly feeling himself, and with good reason. “Nobody Special” is bound to be one of the songs of the summer, especially with Future’s magnetic guest verse and charismatic appearance in the video.

“Nobody Special” follows an undeniable run for Hotboii. After the release of his two celebrated projects from last year, Kut da Fan On and Double O Baby, Hotboii shared the standout “Fuck Shit” in February. Along the way, the young MC has racked up praise from tastemaking outlets like Complex, who wrote: “Hotboii can do it all.” With this year shaping up to be even stronger than his 2020—as he prepares for Rolling Loud Miami 2021, July 23-25, and sends songs like “Nobody Special” out into the world—it’s looking like we’re heading into a Hotboii summer.

ABOUT HOTBOII

At just 15 years of age, Hotboii discovered his natural musical talent and began to craft his own verses as an emotional outlet. Hailing from West Orlando, Hotboii is one of the most exciting new rappers to emerge from his hometown’s scene and is poised to take the rest of the world by storm. In early 2020, the cultural hitmaker released his full-length debut project Kut Da Fan On – a powerhouse 17-track album that accumulated millions of streams within the first month of its release. In December, he released his sophomore effort, Double O Baby which immediately received widespread acclaim from the likes of PITCHFORK, XXL, COMPLEX, and more for the versatility his music. Standout track from the project “Left Lonely” landed him on coveted playlists including Spotify’s “Release Radar” and Apple Music’s “Hip Hop Hits”.

With cosigns of major hip hop heavyweights for the vulnerability he expresses throughout his music, Hotboii has officially earned his place as “Florida’s Next Up” as dubbed by COMPLEX. Now at over 240M overall streams and over 130M video views on YouTube, his ascent continues at an exponential rate. Driven by an overwhelming urge to establish himself as a lasting industry heavyweight, Hotboii continues to prove himself as one of the top artists to watch in 2021 and beyond.

ABOUT FUTURE

2020’s High Off Life was Future’s first solo LP since The Wizrd, released in January 2019. It sported the hit singles “Crushed Up” and “First Off” with Travis Scott and represented Future’s fifth consecutive No. 1 debut on the Billboard 200 albums chart. With High Off Life, the Atlanta-bred superstar obtained his seventh such debut. High Off Life has been certified platinum by the RIAA.

Since the beginning of 2020, Future has been moving with a renewed vigor. Just 10 days into the year he released “Life Is Good” with Drake, yet another championship ring for the What A Time To Be Aliveduo, which notched its highest Billboard Hot 100 placement (No. 2) to date with the track and resulted in a Grammy nomination for the “Life is Good” video.

Future followed “Life Is Good” by delivering a handful of his critically acclaimed mixtapes (Beast Mode56 NightsPurple Reign) to DSPs in April, an outcome his devoted fanbase has long clamored for. It’s allowed him to reflect on a legendary run from the decade prior while setting his sights on the one ahead.

Eric Adams × NYC Term Limits

Eric Adams Refuses Pledge to Protect NYC Term Limits

If Eric Adams is elected New York City’s next Mayor, the city’s beloved 8-year term limits law could soon be out the door. Adams is the only major candidate who has refused to pledge to protect the existing 8-year term limit for mayor and city council.

The pledge reads: “I pledge as mayor to veto any legislation to repeal or lengthen the 8-year term limits to which elected officials in New York City are subject.”

Adams’ rivals in the Democratic primary, Maya Wiley, Kathryn Garcia, Andrew Yang, Shaun Donovan and Raymond McGuire all have signed the term limits pledge.

“As a New Yorker, I can’t believe Eric Adams won’t protect term limits,” said Howie Rich, Chairman of U.S. Term Limits. “The last time the council attacked term limits in 2008, it was a disgrace. We shouldn’t have to deal with another self-serving power grab.”

According to a recent poll, term limits remain a key issue for New York City voters ahead of the upcoming mayoral election. The citywide poll, which was conducted in December by RMG Research, found that 77 percent of voters say it is important that the next mayor of New York City protect and defend the city’s eight-year term limits law. Additionally, by a margin of 73 percent to 9 percent, voters say they are more likely to support a candidate for mayor who promises to protect the current eight-year term limit. RMG Research is owned and operated by Scott Rasmussen.

In 2008, the City Council—on the advice of then-Mayor Michael Bloomberg and influencers such as future President Donald Trump—weakened term limits from 8 years to 12 years, allowing Mr. Bloomberg to seek a third term. The measure proved contentious and city voters restored the eight-year limit by a landslide margin in 2010.

New Yorkers have a long history of backing term limits referenda. In a 1993 initiative led by philanthropist Ronald Lauder, voters established eight-year term limits in an 18-point landslide. Then, in 1996, voters rejected a measure which would have lengthened the limit to 12 years. In 2010, voters restored the eight-year limit the Bloomberg Council had repealed. And in 2018, voters resoundingly adopted an eight-year limit for members of community boards.

U.S. Term Limits is the largest grassroots term limits advocacy group in the country. We connect term limits supporters with their legislators and work to pass term limits on all elected officials, particularly on the U.S. Congress. Find out more at U.S. Term Limits.

MUSEUM OF ARTS AND DESIGN INVITES VISITORS INTO MINIATURE WORLD CREATED BY NEW YORK COLLECTOR JOANNA FISHER

The Fisher Dollhouse: A Venetian Palazzo in Miniature

May 8 — September 26, 2021

Purchase Tickets Here

Inspired by Venice’s glamorous Gritti Palace, The Fisher Dollhouse: A Venetian Palazzo in Miniature will make its public debut at the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) on May 8. With a fifteenth-century classical exterior and ten rooms filled with an eclectic range of historical and contemporary craft, art, and design rendered in miniature, The Fisher Dollhouse: A Venetian Palazzo in Miniature displays an impressive collection of contemporary art created by more than ten international artists, many of whom are working in miniature for the first time. New York collector, maker, and arts patron Joanna Fisher conceived of the dollhouse in response to the lockdown required by the COVID-19 pandemic. Like so many, she was housebound and felt her world shrink…and embraced it, literally. The dollhouse project offered Fisher a form of therapy: it provided a safe haven and, with ever-inward retreat during quarantine, an escape.

“’The House Within’ is how I think about this project. A place people can go to in their minds,” said Fisher. “This was born in the pandemic. An emotional home I found within myself. A safe place created in my imagination. That is how this came to be.”

Fisher was familiar with the Museum of the City of New York’s Stettheimer Dollhouse. This, plus Rachel Lee Hovnanian’s suggestion that the project could be like a miniature version of Peggy Guggenheim’s Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, lead her to commission micro-artworks from artist friends and collaborators. All working in isolation, many found an unexpected sense of community in the creation of the dollhouse and the works within. Peter Gerakaris’s neo-Byzantine icon presented an introspective challenge of recreating an exacting process—painting with a brush of no more than three hairs. There are also sculptural works by prominent artists, including an abstracted figure by Michele Oka Doner and one trapped in glass by Dustin Yellin. An “ancestor portrait,” a reimagined image of Fisher by Antonio Pio Saracino, is mounted in a gilt frame. Artists Tatyana Murray and Rachel Lee Hovnanian both shrunk preexisting works: Aquatic Dream and Body Armor, respectively. Exquisite paintings were contributed by Darren Waterston, Federico de Francesco, and Ryan McGinness, whose family joined Fisher at a recent Thanksgiving celebration where their daughters played with dollhouses together. Waterston contributed an ethereal landscape in the same spirit as a series begun during the pandemic while Hunt Slonem gamely adapted his popular bunny imagery with smaller strokes. There’s also photography by Veronica Gaido. Many of these are set in elegantly crafted, ebonized, or gilded carved wood frames.

Another inspiration for Fisher was Queen Mary’s Dollhouse (long on display at Windsor Castle) that was presented to the Royal Family in 1924 in gratitude for bravery and leadership during the First World War. Designed by Edward Lutyens, it was the work of 1500 of the finest makers of its day. Some of the objects commissioned for it were replicated for The Fisher Dollhouse: A Venetian Palazzo in Miniature, which is also filled with scaled miniatures by contemporary makers as well as antiques and vintage pieces. Its Baroque-style fireplace is by a British maker Sue Doviso, who specializes in detailed architectural elements. Others, like the porcelain sink attributed to Sonia Messer, are testament to twentieth-century pioneers of dollhouse furniture manufacture. “Venetian” touches in the painted bombe chest and bust of Julius Caesar are by David Castillo, a miniaturist in Barcelona. The stunning Murano-style glass chandelier came from glass artists Mario Ramos and Mariana Grande in Madrid. Fred Cobbs, a revered miniature metalworker in Georgia, made a range of tools and other items, from a watering can to a wine vat to an espresso machine.

Close looking is rewarded: a display cabinet teems with ammonites, which first appeared 240 million years ago; a ruby glass wine set fit for (and believed to be made for) Queen Anne; “bamboo” furniture, mouse-sized preserves, a powder horn, and a masquerade mask. Specialties are evident in miniature foods, elaborately bound books, clay olive jars, and wigs. While no dolls dwell here, animals do, in the form of a pheasant, a monkey riding a camel, and ceramic dogs, one housed in its own magnificent dog bed by jeweler Laura Lobdell. The needlepoint rugs Fisher designed and made herself. Many of the makers, like one who refashioned WWI bullet casings into the legs of a brass table, remain unknown.

The dollhouse was made to order by British set designer Holly Jo Beck, who has worked at the Folger Theatre in Washington, D.C. and now works primarily as an animator. In both form and details, the dollhouse draws on specific places such as the Palazzos da Mula Morosini and Bernardo a San Polo. For Fisher, it evokes memories of a favorite hotel, the Gritti Palace, built as a noble residence in the fifteenth century on Venice’s Grand Canal. The pink facade also suggests to Fisher a local landmark, Julian Schnabel’s Palazzo Chupi in Greenwich Village. Such associations offer flights of fancy during a time of curtailed travel and cancelled plans.

A “house within a house,” as poet and critic Susan Stewart wrote nearly thirty years ago in On Longing: Narratives of the Miniature, the Gigantic, the Souvenir, the Collection, the dollhouse exposes tensions between the inside and outside worlds. Sanctuary and prison, this “most consummate of miniatures” also confronts “the inaccessibility of what cannot be lived.” A condition intensified by the pandemic that Fisher has felt intensely. “While this dollhouse was a solitary exercise,” she noted, “it somehow brought me closer to people all over the world, creating its own social network, balancing out the isolation of this pandemic.”

The Fisher Dollhouse: A Venetian Palazzo in Miniature is a work in progress, one Fisher plans to return to. For now, this dollhouse’s secret rooms, where one could imagine curling up or entertaining at a moment’s notice, have been fixed in time and opened up so that visitors can inhabit and enjoy.
