3 Quarantine Nutrition Hacks

Are your clothes fitting more tightly on you than what you are comfortable with these days? If you indulged in “The Quarantine Diet” of added sugar, refined carbohydrates and more sugar, you are not alone. There isn’t a person on the planet who hasn’t been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in some way. There are memes about Zoom meetings in pajamas. We’ve seen the jokes about annoyed pets who are ready for their owners to get back into the office. The most popular subject…drum roll, please… has been COVID weight gain, or “The Quarantine 15.” With some of us gaining upwards of 10 to 15 pounds at this point, these particular memes aren’t quite so funny anymore.

While some things are more difficult to control, like job loss, financial dips or getting sick, take advantage of the variables you do have control over. One of the easiest things you can master right now is your nutritional health. Making healthier food choices is more important than ever as we are collectively less active these days. Many places in the U.S. still have closed gyms and workout facilities, and home workouts aren’t for everyone. That leaves a lot of us with a perfect storm of weight gain, too little movement and too much snacking at home.

Life has disrupted us in a major way, and yet, there are still things we can do to reverse some of the damage. At 360 Magazine, we have rounded up 3 strategies from Los Angeles Nutrition Coach Natasha Maxwell to help get you back on track if the quarantine weight gain has claimed you as a victim. Nobody knows when COVID-19 lockdowns will end. If this is going to be the “new normal,” you will have to reincorporate the healthy habits from your old life into this new one. If you are totally new to nutritional habit building (the food choices practiced consistently in your daily life), these tips are still a great help. How to Reclaim Your Body during Quarantine:

  1. Drink More Water!: This one is often overlooked as a weight management tool although it is as equally as important as the food choices we make. According to Natasha, “As a nutrition coach, I cannot express the number of times I encounter new clients who scoff at the amount of water I suggest. That number should be at least half of your body weight; in the summer I recommend upwards of 100 ounces. Yes, that’s right, 100 ounces minimum. The lack of sufficient water is harmful to your body and can affect it in a number of ways including salty food cravings, waste buildup and digestion problems. That waste buildup can mimic true weight gain, also known as “water weight”. Bloating from dehydration is no fun either and is likely the reason that it’s sometimes hard to button your pants.” As Natasha stated: Drink your water, please!
  2. Be mindful of your sugar intake this summer!: What comes to mind when you envision summertime treats? Maybe it’s popsicles, banana pudding or key lime pie. These are all fine in moderation, but too much sugar can lead to weight gain and excess puffiness. For those looking to lose weight from our extended stay indoors, we will have to keep track of our sugar intake, even when lounging happily by the pool. Some ways around overindulging in sweets include substituting fruits for other sweets, avoiding sodas and packaged fruit juice and being more mindful of limiting foods with labels listing corn syrup, glucose, sucrose, etc.
  3.  Seek out new and healthier recipes!: The likelihood of entertaining guests during summer or being invited to someone else’s party or backyard BBQ is relatively high. Either way, food will be high on the list of priorities. Think produce, lean meats and fewer refined snacks when debating over a menu. Natasha especially urges the consumption of produce. Fresh vegetables and fruit are higher in water content, and an ample water supply can come in handy when you’re feeling a little dehydrated from the heat! Sliced cucumbers and carrots with a homemade dip are a win. Seafood and lean poultry options on the grill with veggies are also a great combo. For plant-based options, think stuffed pepper recipes, veggie hummus wraps and rainbow-colored salads with incredible ingredients and flavor. Who said healthy recipes can’t be tasty, too?

This pandemic is stressful and has affected us in a multitude of ways. Emotional eating is understandable, given our current circumstances. We don’t have to be rigid around everything we eat, but being more aware of what we are indulging in and how often is the key to weight maintenance and weight loss. Make a plan for your nutritional habits and find the balance that works best for you. We wish you luck!

Breast Cancer Survivor & Yoga Nidra Facilitator Helps Children Live Happier With New Book

Children from all walks of life are exposed to stressful situations daily and learn to think in a way that creates anxiety. Some suffer hardships or see family members go through medical challenges, while others may be exposed to violence or substance abuse. Even children who come from privileged homes with intact families face challenges, whether it be parents who push them too hard, bullies who tease them at school, or online videos that send the wrong messages. All of these events can create insecurities and fears, which today’s youth don’t know to handle. Learning mindfulness techniques can help children be more resilient in the face of stress and help ease their worries.  

How can we teach them?

By using a how-to storybook that introduces children to mindfulness techniques for easing anxiety and promoting happiness.

The Dolphin’s Secret: A Meditational Journey for Children by Meryl Best Lowell introduces children to Yoga Nidra—an ancient form of guided meditation which incorporates a sequence of mindfulness techniques—and encourages them to add it to their lives in order to feel calmer and happier. The book weaves how-to steps into the whimsical story of Meri, a beautiful mermaid, and her friend Aloha, a dolphin. Using The Dolphin’s Secret, parents and teachers can lead children ages 4-8 in these exercises as they lay down before naptime or bedtime.

“When children are scared, tired or sad, sometimes they act out in undesirable ways,” says Lowell. “The easy relaxation techniques incorporated into the story of Meri and Aloha will help caregivers as they guide children through ways to better manage themselves when they have these feelings. Not only can the story be used for entertainment when a child is feeling tired, but it can also be referred to in scenarios when a child is upset, and a parent or teacher needs to take action to calm them and stop the behavior from escalating.”

Lowell began practicing guided meditations while undergoing chemotherapy treatments for a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer. Once treatments were complete, she checked off a bucket-list item and went swimming with dolphins in the Bahamas– a life-enhancing and transformational experience. Later while on a hike, she was inspired to incorporate the mindfulness techniques of Yoga Nidra into a book for children- and of course, use dolphins among the characters.

Walker attended Clemson University studying graphic design and product development, where in his senior year he was tasked with designing a skateboard with various printing techniques. Designing around 40 pieces was the start to his amazing career. He has also worked as a book designer for Amazon, a prop fabricator for an events company, and a sign maker. “ONLY YOU” A Multimedia Series by Indira Cesarine

The Untitled Space is pleased to present multimedia series “ONLY YOU” by Indira Cesarine at SCOPE Art Show in Basel, Switzerland in partnership with ArtHelix Gallery and SHIM. Cesarine’s medium format photography, welded steel sculpture and video art will be on view in Booth A43 from June 12th to 17th for the duration of the fair.

“ONLY YOU” is a conceptual narrative portrait series chronicling a woman’s emotions as she traverses a metaphorical landscape of love, loss, abuse and betrayal. Each artwork is part of the greater narrative of her story. The series is based on autobiographical experiences of the artist. It was photographed on a medium format RZ camera as well as on HD video. The limited edition photographs and welded steel sculptures were completed in 2017 and unveiled last November at The Untitled Space gallery along with a dance performance by Bryn Cohn + Artists inspired by the series. Photography from the series was additionally featured at CICA Museum, South Korea as part of their January exhibition “Portrait 2018”.

The video art edition of “ONLY YOU” premiered at Art Basel Miami for an exhibition in collaboration with American Friends of The Louvre and Miami Art Museum. The video has additionally been screened internationally at exhibitions including “Factory Project” at London’s Red Bull Studios in collaboration with Graffik Gallery, at an event for Cannes Film Festival in France, and at the Big Screen Plaza in Chelsea, New York.

Indira Cesarine is a multimedia artist who works with photography, video, painting, printmaking and sculpture. A graduate of Columbia University with a triple major in Art History, French and Women’s Studies, she additionally studied art and photography at Parsons School of Design, International Center of Photography, School of Visual Arts, The Art Students League and New York Academy of Art. Cesarine had her first solo show at the age of sixteen at Paul Mellon Arts Center.

Empowering feminist themes are often the point of departure for Cesarine’s multi-sensory series. Her artwork questions the place of humanity in context with contemporary civilization and is often influenced by autobiographical content and women’s history at large. As a multi-disciplinarian artist she works across several mediums and techniques to convey a rich and diverse narrative, with an emphasis on thematic subject matter that engages a narrative of social discourse and art activism.

Her artwork has been featured internationally at many art galleries, museums and festivals, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Mattatuck Museum, CICA Museum, Getty Images Gallery, French Embassy Cultural Center, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, Art Basel Miami, Cannes Film Festival and the International Festival Photo Mode to name a few. In 2014, her public art sculpture, “The Egg of Light” was exhibited at Rockefeller Center as part of the Fabergé Big Egg Hunt. Her work was recently auctioned at Sotheby’s New York for the annual “Take Home A Nude” art benefit.

“’ONLY YOU’ is an autobiographic series that I photographed and directed, working with a model to reenact sentiments I was feeling. This series tells the story not just of my emotional trauma, but that of many women who have been abused and betrayed by people they trusted, and how difficult it can be to process those emotions. In light of the #MeToo movement, many women are finding the strength to tell their stories. I have had many experiences that have crossed the line, in my personal life as well as throughout my career, and this series resonates with me as particularly relevant, a metaphorical mirror of how many women are feeling right now. You can feel the emotions in this series—they range from anger to sadness to disbelief to shame…frustration, fear— It’s an emotive series that focuses on the eyes as a portal.” – Indira Cesarine
