‘UZ Leuven’ Minipacemakers

On Thursday May 28th, the Belgian university hospital UZ Leuven implanted a new type of wireless minipacemaker in a patient. This was a first in Europe. The new generation of minipacemakers allows two times as many patients to qualify, in comparison with the first generation.

The Micra pacemaker is a wireless minipacemaker that has been used in UZ Leuven since 2015. Surgery for such a small pacemaker is a lot less invasive than for a normal pacemaker. The device is placed in the heart via a small incision in the groin. The minipacemaker is invisible to the patient and in the first generation of the device, researchers found that the number of complications could be reduced with 63 percent.

Helping more patients

So far, the minipacemaker could only be used in 16 percent of the patient requiring a pacemaker. “The first generation of the device only measured the heart activity in one ventricle of the heart. Patients that needed to have the heart activity in the atrium measured as well, did not qualify. With this new type of pacemaker, we can also treat patients with a complete interruption of the heart activity between the ventricle and the atrium”, according to dr. Christophe Garweg, cardiologist in UZ Leuven.

With the new generation of the Micra pacemaker, up to 40 percent of the patients could qualify. Dr. Garweg: “The new pacemaker can also measure heart activity in the atrium and as such coordinate the electrical activity between atrium and ventricle. This restores the normal heart rhythm and improves the patient’s quality of life. The minipacemaker operates more or less like a conventional pacemaker, which is implanted under the skin and connected to the heart with two leads.”

First implants

UZ Leuven was actively involved in the development of the new pacemaker. At the moment the new type of pacemaker is only used in the context of clinical trials. At a later time, its use will be extended. In the meantime, the new pacemaker has been implanted in two patients. Both procedures went according to plan, and both patients are doing well.

A revolution for the pacemaker

The development of the wireless pacemaker in 2009 was a big revolution in the history of the pacemaker. It was the first big step forward since the clinical introduction of the pacemaker in the sixties. Worldwide, 35,000 Micra-systems have been implanted. UZ Leuven started with implanting the minipacemakers as the first Belgian hospital in 2015. In the meantime, for Belgium UZ Leuven is the hospital with the most expertise in Micra’s, in Europe it is in the top 5. In Belgium, the technology is not yet reimbursed so for now UZ Leuven finances the device for the patient with its own means.

Pacemaker and bradycardia

A pacemaker is required when a patient’s heart rhythm is too low (bradycardia) and medication is no longer sufficient. It stops the heart from pumping enough oxygenated blood through the body. Patients experience difficulty during physical exercise: they faint, tire quickly, and run out of breath more quickly. A pacemaker replaces the heart’s natural rhythm thanks to electrical impulses.

REVOLUTIONARY ELECTRIC VEHICLE TURBINE RECHARGING TECHNOLOGY NEARS PRODUCTION READINESS

  • Smaller 15 kW turbine expands potential applications to include passenger cars, allowing for faster commercialisation
  • Discussions are at an advanced stage regarding location for the world’s largest micro-turbine production plant 

The Chinese automotive R&D company, Techrules, is approaching production readiness for its ground-breaking Turbine-Recharging Electric Vehicle (TREV) system which was showcased in the Ren supercar at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. 

The TREV system is an all-new patent-protected series hybrid powertrain technology comprising a turbine-generator. TREV combines extensive experience of aviation and electric vehicle technologies with several patented technical innovations, delivering unprecedented levels of efficiency and performance, and ultra-low environmental impact especially with the use of renewable fuels.

Over the past year Techrules has made significant investments to grow its technical capabilities. World renowned electric vehicle expert Prof. Dr. Ching Chuen Chan is overseeing a newly-established Techrules R&D centre in Beijing. Prof. Dr. Chan is, amongst others, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, a member of the Royal Academy of Engineering, and a Founding Chairman of the World Electric Vehicle Association. Under his guidance a smaller 15 kW turbine is now nearing its production readiness, making it suitable for commercial and industrial applications. 

William Jin, CEO of Techrules, said: “Since we showcased the Ren supercar with a twin 80 kW turbine set-up at the 2017 and 2018 Geneva Motor Shows, we received a tremendous amount of interest from OEMs around the world looking to benefit from its exceptional range-extending capabilities for passenger cars and commercial vehicles. So, we decided to adjust our strategy and develop a smaller and cheaper 15 kW version which is more suitable for commercial and passenger vehicles. This is allowing us to commercialise the TREV system much faster: we will be ready for mass production by the end of 2019.”

Techrules will use the TREV system in fixed and mobile charging stations as well as providing it to OEMs for use in commercial vehicles and passenger cars. 

In addition, Techrules is currently looking for a suitable international partner to help finalise the development and production of its Ren supercar, with a longer term aim to use its TREV system for its own passenger cars.

The inventor of the new micro-turbine technology, Chief Technology Officer of Techrules, Matthew Jin, explains: “The development of the Ren supercar is giving us extensive real-world experience that only cements our belief that large scale adoption of micro-turbines in electric vehicles will herald a new age for electric mobility. 

”Because the core technology of our turbine includes a brand new hybrid air bearing system, we have a previously unavailable route to mass-production of micro-turbines at a reasonable cost. And it can run on renewable fuels such as ethanol and biogas, which would smoothen the transition from the age of fossil fuels to the age of electricity. Because of its superior efficiency, fewer batteries are needed for electric vehicles, saving significant weight and cost, while also reducing emissions and, ultimately, urban pollution.”

Whether applied as a standalone charging system, or as a range extender in an electric vehicle, the micro-turbine can recharge batteries anywhere and at any time. It completely eliminates the problems of range anxiety and the inconvenience of lengthy charging times or poor charge point availability. Since it can use the existing infrastructure it avoids the challenges posed by the construction, cost and capacity of charging networks.

William Jin concludes: “We are in advanced discussions with a number of potential new partners to form strategic alliances. These will allow us to bring our technology, including the Ren supercar, to markets around the world, and to develop new products and commercial applications for our advanced TREV system. But our key priority now is to conclude the negotiations with local municipalities with the help of Professor Dr. Chan, in order to start building the largest micro-turbine facility in the world.”

VALEO x CES 2019

At CES in Las Vegas for the sixth consecutive year, Valeo is unveiling its latest technological innovations at the epicenter of the revolutions shaping mobility, i.e., the advent of autonomous vehicles, powertrain electrification and digital mobility. These three disruptions transforming the automotive industry are also driving profound change in society.

Valeo develops new technologies to make this transformation a reality. One example that can be seen and tested in the streets of Las Vegas during CES 2019 is Valeo Drive4U®, the Group’s first autonomous car, which is unique in that it can perform all operations using only Valeo sensors that are already series-produced (ultrasound, cameras, lasers, radars and LiDARS) and artificial intelligence. The vehicle is essentially equipped with a full-fledged digital brain that can process the inputs and learn from the scenarios it encounters in the city.

One of the key challenges in autonomous driving is safety. Road accidents are a global epidemic and most often the result of human error. Valeo’s goal is for its systems to significantly reduce accidents, setting the target of less than one major incident for every billion kilometers driven, which would represent a higher level of safety than in the aeronautics industry. To achieve this result, Valeo is presenting two major innovations in Las Vegas: Valeo Drive4U® Remote to operate autonomous vehicles remotely when assistance is required or even vital, and Valeo Voyage XR, which is able to simulate the virtual presence of a person – based in a fixed location – on board the autonomous vehicle during the journey. This means that the car could potentially be controlled externally by somebody who is aware of what is happening within the vehicle. Based on this innovation, Valeo has designed a new form of communication that allows a “stationary” passenger wearing a virtual reality headset to teleport into a moving vehicle.

Also with a view to increasing safety, Valeo will be showcasing Valeo XtraVue Trailer and Valeo PictureBeam Monolithic. The first of these two innovations causes a trailer or caravan to appear invisible in the rearview mirror of the vehicle towing it, making all maneuvers easier and safer for the driver. The second is a high definition lighting system developed in partnership with CREE, the US market leader in the manufacture of LEDs. The solution generates a high definition beam of light on the road without ever blinding other road users and projects information and images onto the pavement.

Lastly, since usage patterns are changing, with digital tools giving access to new ways of getting around, Valeo is developing technologies to promote their widespread take-up. Examples include the Valeo Clean Road app, which generates customized routes to avoid peak pollution areas, and Valeo Oxy’Zen, which can be used to activate air purification systems inside the vehicle cabin.

With these innovations, Valeo is once again demonstrating its capacity to imagine, design and develop technologies conducive to new forms of mobility that are widely accessible yet adapted to individual needs.

New York Icon – Rammellzee

In honor of Rammellzee’s birthday, wanted to share this new documentary that will take you on a cosmic journey called, It’s Not Who But What.

Rammellzee was a legendary artist, graffiti writer, hip-hop pioneer, myth-maker, and a New York icon. It’s been eight years since the passing of Rammellzee, but his work continues to live on and it only seems appropriate to celebrate him. This Saturday, on December 15th Rammellzee would have turned 68 years old.

A revolutionary innovator and polymath ahead of his time, the famous artist rose to fame in the 1970’s with his electric skills and eccentric designs around “gothic futurism”. In the documentary viewers are brought to New York City’s subway, which was a source of inspiration and a canvas for Rammellzee’s graffiti work. The short film highlights his art and how he’s set the bar for future artists.

VIZIO, Inc. announced the introduction of the VIZIO SmartCast skill for Amazon Alexa, enabling easy voice control of 2017 and 2016 SmartCast P-, M- and E-Series 4K display collections. VIZIO 4K Ultra HD display users with an Alexa-enabled device can now conveniently control volume, channel and input settings, as well as turn their VIZIO display on and off using only their voice1. The new VIZIO SmartCast skill for Alexa will also be available to 2018 VIZIO SmartCast Full HD and HD display customers in the coming weeks.
The VIZIO SmartCast skill for Alexa allows users with Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, Amazon Tap, Echo Show and other Alexa-enabled devices to ask Alexa to control their VIZIO SmartCast displays. Using their voice, users can incrementally adjust volume, to change the input of a playback device, switch a VIZIO SmartCast display on and off and even control playback functions such as fast forward, rewind and pause on select apps. The addition of a skill for Alexa to the SmartCast platform gives consumers with Alexa-enabled devices simple, hands-free control of key entertainment features on their VIZIO SmartCast display.
