Lil Nas X Breaks Internet at the BET Awards

Lil Nas X took the BET Awards red carpet by storm. The Old Town Road rapper stepped into the runway in not one, but two gender-fluid looks at the awards show on Sunday evening, and fans are going crazy.

The 22-year-old rapper arrived in a full scale, blue and white toile-print skirt with a matching corset, suspenders and jacket by designer Andrea Grossi. The look was featured in the designer’s debut collection, where Grossi explored themes and prints around Catholicism – the same theme that Lil Nas X touched on his latest single MONTERO (Call me By Your Name). According to Vogue, the first look Lil Nas X donned featured graphics that reflect Grossi’s feelings on politics and religion. He later posted a picture of him in the outfit on Instagram with the caption “doll.”

The rapper re-appeared on the carpet in a full body floral and lace suit by Richard Quinn from his 2021 fall collection. The flared pants, crystal embellishments and baroque-style florals allowed Lil Nas X to really make an Elton John-esque appearance.

Later on, Lil Nas X further stunned him fans as he took the stage with a golden ancient Egyptian theme, perfectly matched with his dress and dancers and stage. The rapper paid tribute to Michael Jackson’s hit song Remember the Time when he performed MONTERO at the awards show. What really stole the show, though, was sharing a passionate kiss with one of his male dancers at the end of the performance. BET described this as “a boundary-breaking gesture particularly fitting during Pride Month, when the gay community is encouraged to show solidarity for the community and to advance LGBTQ rights.”

MONTERO has been platinum and hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April. Lil Nas X previously opened up about the release of the track to his fans, dedicating the song to his childhood self (birth name Montero Lamar Hill), “Dear 14-year-old Montero, I wrote a song with our name in it. It’s about a guy I met last summer. I know we promised to never come out publicly, I know we promised to never be ‘that’ type of gay person, I know we promised to die with the secret, but this will open doors for many other queer people to simply exist. You see this is very scary for me, people will be angry, they will say I’m pushing an agenda. But the truth is, I am. The agenda to make people stay the f— out of other people’s lives and stop dictating who they should be. Sending you love from the future.”

While not everyone is supportive of his actions, the rapper remains unbothered and unapologetic, taking time out of his day to clap back at haters on Twitter. Fans are taking it to social media platforms to praise and celebrate Lil Nas X, “On the last day of #pride 2021 @LilNasX got on the #BETAwards stage and kissed another guy. If you grew up Black and gay, you know how major this is.” Lil Nas X has been under scrutiny and criticism ever since coming out as gay on Twitter in 2019. One of the biggest controversials was when Lil Nas X tried to explain why he came out as gay, and then Kevin Hart interrupted him with a “so what?”

As Pride Month comes to an end, the pressure to highlight the importance of respecting someone’s decision in coming out (or not) is bigger than ever. In a viral Instagram post by feminist, “When someone comes out, it’s important to remind them that they’re loved, and that you don’t view them as a fundamentally different person because they’re queer. But it’s also important to acknowledge – and validate – the struggles they’ve endured while being in the closet, and the courage it took them to come out.” As Pride Month comes to an end, the pressure to highlight the importance of respecting someone’s decision in coming out (or not) is bigger than ever.

And Lil Nas X’s BET Awards kiss is without a doubt, a historical moment for the LGBT+ community.

Billy Ray Cyrus Signed by UTA

Leading global talent, entertainment and sports company UTA has signed entertainment icon Billy Ray Cyrus for worldwide representation in all areas. Throughout his nearly three-decade career of Billboard chart success that put him in the same company as Carlos Santana and Louis Armstrong, Cyrus has achieved global success as a singer, songwriter, actor, producer and philanthropist.

Most recently, he celebrated the highest RIAA® 14x Diamond-certified song in recorded music history with Lil Nas X on the worldwide smash, “Old Town Road.”

When asked about his genre-bending approach to music, Cyrus recently shared, “My philosophy to making music is no limitations. No rules, no limits, no preconceived notions. Don’t try to think inside the box or outside the box, just think like there is no box.”

The critically and commercially acclaimed superstar has established himself as a household name across multiple areas of the entertainment landscape, including music, television, theater and more.

When one scopes out Cyrus’ trophy case, the awards are represented across all genres: GRAMMY® Awards, Billboard Music Awards, BET Hip Hop Awards, MTV VMA Moonmen, Country Music Association Awards, American Music Awards and Canadian Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences Juno Awards, among many other accolades.

The Flatwoods, KY native exploded onto the music scene when his first album, Some Gave All, debuted on the all-genre Billboard album chart at No. 1 and stayed there for a record-breaking 17 weeks in 1992. The lead single, “Achy Breaky Heart,” became a phenomenon and went multi-platinum. After “Achy Breaky Heart,” Cyrus followed up with back-to-back hits “It Could’ve Been Me,” “She’s Not Crying Anymore,” “Wher’m I Gonna Live When I Get Home?” and “Some Gave All.” Cyrus knocked himself out of the top Billboard position with his second No. 1 album, It Won’t Be The Last, featuring smash hits “In the Heart of a Woman,” “Words By Heart” and “Somebody New.” His success continued with dozens more singles that redefined country music.

NIKE vs MSCHF

Nike has filed a federal trademark infringement lawsuit against MSCHF shoes that released a controversial customized version of its sneakers “Satan Shoes” with rapper Lil Nas X. In the lawsuit filed today, Nike accused MSCHF Product Studio, Inc. of trademark infringement over the designer’s 666 pairs of modified Nike sneakers made in collaboration with the “Old Town Road” singer. All 666 pairs sold out Monday.

Fara Sunderji is a partner at the international law firm Dorsey & Whitney in its New York office. Sunderji has extensive expertise in all stages of trademark, copyright, clearance, prosecution, maintenance, enforcement, and litigation. Of the lawsuit she says,

“Nike’s swoosh is probably one of the most recognizable non-word trademarks in the world.  You see it and you automatically think of Nike as the source of the good on which it appears.  This is how trademarks are supposed to operate, as a source identified.  Nike’s case here is pretty simple to understand:  MSCHF is selling Nike Air Max 97’s that have been modified in a way in which Nike does not approve.  People see these “Satan Shoes” and think they come from Nike and some people don’t like that.  Nike, therefore, claims that the release of these “Santa Shoes” is harming its valuable brand,” Sunderji says.

“MSCHF will likely argue that they are protected under a theory called the First Sale Doctrine, which allows third parties to resell trademarked goods that have already entered the marketplace.  But the doctrine is limited to the sale of genuine goods.  The doctrine is based on the premise that consumers are not being deceived because they are receiving what they have bargained for, the trademarked good. Under Second Circuit case law, goods are not genuine if they do not conform to the brand owner’s quality control standards, and it is easy to guess Nike’s take on this issue – Just don’t do it,” Sunderji says.

According to NBC News, the lawsuit states “We don’t have any further details to share on pending legal matters,” Nike said. “However, we can tell you we do not have a relationship with Lil Nas X or MSCHF.”

Trademark attorney Josh Gerben of Gerben Perrott PLLC stated to CNN Business that “It’s a legal rationale that grants artists who purchase and repurpose individual copyrighted products the ability to express and profit off their own creativity.”. He also pointed out Nike shoe redesigners like MSCHF commonly sell their work on online marketplaces. “You’ve got all kinds of artists that go out there and they take a shoe, and they’ll do a whole bunch of custom art on the shoe and maybe resell it for $1,000-3,000,” Gerben said. “This is something Nike is well aware of and has done absolutely nothing to mess with because there’s a sneaker culture here.”

Lil Nas X isn’t named as a party in the lawsuit. Representatives for the musician did not respond to calls or emails requesting comment.

The backlash from social media is incredible with thousands of people expressing their opinions with the shoes and the representation they bring:

  •  South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem tweeted “Our kids are being told that this kind of product, is not only okay, it’s “exclusive.” But do you know what’s more exclusive? Their God-given eternal soul. We are in a fight for the soul of our nation. We need to fight hard. And we need to fight smart. We have to win.”.
  • NBA star Nick Young tweeted “My kids will never play Old Town Road again… I’m still debating about wearing Nike after this come Nike a drop of blood for real”.
  • On Instagram, celebrity musician Miley Cyrus shares a photo proudly wearing the controversial sneakers, captioning the post “Can you see Satan?”.

The controversial ‘Satan Shoes’ were strategically dropped after the release of Lil Nas X’s music video for “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)”, which has already been viewed more than 54 million times.

Lil Nas X took to Twitter in his true fashion posting “I spent my entire teenage years hating myself because of the shit y’all preached would happen to me because I was gay. So I hope u are mad, stay mad, feel the same anger you teach us to have towards ourselves.”
