Columbus/Indigenous Peoples’ Day

By Reb Czukoski

Today is Columbus Day, October 11th.

Columbus day is a U.S. holiday celebrated on the second Monday of October each year to mark the landing of Christopher Columbus on October 12, 1492. This holiday is oftentimes associated with days off for most schools and businesses, and in some areas parades and street fairs are held.

Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy in 1451. Given his nationality, the federal holiday created in the 19th century was intended to honor Columbus’ discovery as well as Italian American heritage because of the persecution that Italian immigrants were facing during the period in which it was made. The day is a reminder for Italian Americans of their culture and to remember that the United States is an immigrant country.

The reasons that Columbus day is renowned are also the basis for criticism. Columbus did land in the Bahamas, but he was not the first to find it. Believing he reached East Asia, Columbus actually landed on an island in the Bahamas that he called San Salvador, disregarding its name from the native Lucayan inhabitants of the island, Guanahani. The identification of the holiday, as mandated by the government, fails to acknowledge the native populations that were displaced and decimated.

During his lifetime, he completed four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean and paved the way for future European exploration and colonization of the Americas. His first expedition, to what is now known as the Caribbean, he placed his men to settle down, kidnapped a great number of Native Americans, and took gold, native birds and plants to bring back to Spain and his financiers upon his return. The abduction and maltreatment of the Native people were only the beginning of the transatlantic slave trade and genocide, which is why many people nowadays reject the endorsement of Christopher Columbus on this day.

Although the appreciation of Indigenous people on Columbus Day is slower to be incorporated in youth education, many higher institutions such as Colleges and Universities are conscious of the historical significance of the day and their curricula are reflective and validating of Indigenous awareness.

Beyond schooling, the discussion on whether or not to change the values of Columbus Day extend to corporate. Companies and retailers are open with their stances on the holiday, choosing whether or not to support Columbus Day or as it was previously and informally recognized, Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Their contributions come from choosing to keep their stores open, posting their views on social media, or using their platforms to boost Indigenous voices and businesses. Brands such as Sephora, Ben & Jerry’s, Patagonia, and Vogue Magazine, are known supporters for Indigenous Peoples’ Day on Twitter and used their accounts to amplify their principles. Equally, there are retailers that support Columbus Day causes for Italian American legacies.

On October 8th, the 47th president of the United States, Joe Biden, issued the first ever presidential proclamation of Indigenous Peoples’ Day to be observed on October 11th. The objective of this domestic pronouncement was to shift the focus from a holiday celebrating the controversial efforts of Columbus and instead to appreciate Native folk, “On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, our Nation celebrates the invaluable contributions and resilience of Indigenous peoples, recognizes their inherent sovereignty, and commits to honoring the Federal Government’s trust and treaty obligations to Tribal Nations” (Joseph R. Biden Jr.).

Indigenous Peoples’ Day does not replace Columbus Day and his statement does not condemn the celebration of Columbus day. However, for Indigenous people, the affirmation that there have been systemic inequalities because of the annexation of their ancestral land is a positive move in the direction of keeping the existing native land autonomous and protected.

Joy Crookes × New York Times

Joy Crookes — who is already garnering Amy Winehouse and Lauryn Hill comparisons from her own songs—began her musical journey years before her magpie-like introduction to brass. The daughter of a Bengali mother and an Irish father, she grew up listening to an eclectic mix of genres. Every week, while driving her to Irish dancing lessons, they would listen to a different album. Kendrick Lamar’s ‘To Pimp a Butterfly’ one week ‘Soon Forward’ by Gregory Isaac the next. As a curious, passionate, and music-obsessed 12-year-old, Joy decided to start writing her own song and honing her modern soul sound. Her first song “Seaside” was penned after falling head over heels for a boy by the beach. Seven years later, her songs might have grown more sophisticated, but the approach remains the same: whether she’s dealing with heartbreak or trying to come to terms with the latest Trump headline, Joy is committed to translating her most honest and vulnerable feelings to music. While her candid song-writing and fearless attitude have won her dedicated grassroots following, it was a baby-faced Joy singing a cover of Hit the Road Jack, which caught the attention of 600,000 viewers, and her first management company. Now she has a feature in the New York Times.

“Listening to Crookes’s soulful, intimate music can feel like intruding on a private conversation or cracking open a diary” – The New York Times”

“In her music, Crookes offers listeners a nuanced and candid exploration of her multiracial identity. At a time when many conversations about race in the arts and calls for change have only recently begun, Crookes’s commitment to vulnerability in her storytelling has helped her connect with a growing — and loyal — fan base.” – The New York Times

Kay Young – New EP

Today, London based artist, rapper and producer Kay Young releases her new EP This Here Feels Good via Play It Again Sam. The EP was written, performed, produced, and recorded by Kay in London during 2020-2021 and includes two never before heard tracks No Regrets and Wait For Me.

Listen to This Here Feels Good

This Here Feels Good is the sound of an artist using music as their second language. Kay moves between tightly rapped verses, glorious vocal performances, often within the space of one track as well as across the whole EP. Wait For Me pays homage to the London jazz scene and adds a playful touch to a project already brimming with joy, while previously released tracks “Suddenly” and “I’ve Got You” provide euphoric uplift, and Kay shows her skill as a deft lyricist on White Teeth.

The release is a stunning collection of songs that expands upon the sonic blueprint Kay has already laid out, that caught the attention of Jay Electronica and Jay-Z who later signed her to Roc Nation. She delves deeper into dance and soul while continuing to explore themes of familial legacy and cultural relation, keeping a perfect balance between lyrical vulnerability and musical uplift.

Speaking on the EP Kay says:

Creating this EP during lockdown kept me sane. I simply got lost in it because it felt good and I felt safe regardless of what was going on outside my bedroom studio. I dug deep and gave it my all!

Deana Carter – 25th Anniversary

To celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Deana Carter’s 5X platinum debut album Did I Shave My Legs for This?, Carter announced on The Bobby Bones Show that Capitol Nashville/Ume will release Did I Shave My Legs For This? 25th Anniversary Edition on November 5, but it isn’t just Carter doing the singing this time around. The project includes two new tracks with Carter performing and producing 2021 versions of the CMA award-winning, and 2X platinum hit single “Strawberry Wine,” featuring  Lauren Alaina, Martina McBride, Ashley McBryde, Kylie Morgan, and Vince Gill on guitar, as well as the title track, featuring Terri Clark, Sara Evans, Ashley McBryde, and Vince Gill.

The 25th anniversary editions of the album have been remastered from the original recordings and will be released on CD with two bonus tracks, as well as a Digital Deluxe with an additional ten songs, seven of which will be available digitally for the first time. Pre-order/Pre-save HERE

“I am beyond blown away to see the generational connection between my first single, ‘Strawberry Wine’ and all the fans, young and seasoned,” award-winning country singer-songwriter Carter shares. “Being a part of a song that has become an anthem for the ’90s and beyond is such a blessing and more than I could’ve ever dreamed of. The fans have been the catalyst for the success of ‘Strawberry Wine’ and the whole Shave album because of their connection to the truth and realness behind the songs.

“They lived it — just like I did — and just like all of my collaborators did. It was an honor to re-record two favorites with my fellow female artists who inspire me and who I admire. These new versions are a way of raising a glass to everyone who loves these songs, and to the country radio stations still playing them, and to say thank you. I hope everyone enjoys celebrating 25 years of Did I Shave My Legs For This? as much as I’ve enjoyed putting together these very special releases.”

1997 CMA Single and Song of the Year “Strawberry Wine,” written by Matraca Berg and Gary Harrison, was also nominated for a GRAMMY for Best Country Song, the Academy of Country Music Awards Best Country Song,  and the Country Music Radio Awards for Song of the Year. Carter co-wrote the title track “Did I Shave My Legs for This?” with Rhonda Hart.

“Who knew that some girl talk would end up becoming a cultural catchphrase for decades to come? Wow! This song is proof that a genuine, heartfelt message can be delivered with a sense of humor,” she added, “yet stand firm in the conviction to not settle for less in this life. Thanks to all the ladies who have sung this anthem at the top of their lungs and to my record label for letting me boldly title my debut album so memorably.”

Other chart-toppers from Carter’s debut album included “We Danced Anyway” (co-written by Berg and Randy Scruggs),How Do I Get There” (co-written by Carter and Chris Farren), and “Count Me In” (co-written by Carter and Chuck Jones).

As part of the album’s 25th Anniversary celebration, Carter will perform on the Grand Ole Opry Saturday, October 16, as part of the Opry’s 4,998th show. To purchase tickets, click HERE

Deana Carter will also celebrate the 25th Anniversary of her 5X Platinum debut album Did I Shave My Legs for This? in her hometown of Nashville on November 18, 2021 at the historic Ryman Auditorium, with special guests Charles Esten and Breland, as well as surprise appearances from other artists. Tickets are available NOW HERE.

It is such an honor and a career highlight to finally headline The Ryman, our sacred Mother Church, especially being a Nashville native and growing up in the industry, knowing that my dad, Fred Carter, Jr., performed on that stage with so many greats, Carter says. And all falling within the 25th anniversary re-release of my very first album Did I Shave My Legs For This? on UMG Nashville. It is a pinch-me moment now, she adds, and it will be on that super special night with Charles Esten and Breland and some surprise guests too.

Country newcomer Breland recently covered the first-love love song Strawberry Wine as part of Spotify’s 90s Country campaign and will be opening for Carter at the Ryman show. Strawberry Wine was just one of those songs that transcended time, Breland said of the ballad.

Halsey and the filmmakers were represented by WME and Endeavor Content in the distribution deal.

Set to the music of Halsey’s fourth studio album, this one-of-a-kind film experience stars the two-time GRAMMY nominee as the young and pregnant Queen Lila. After a shocking event, Lila unlocks a paranormal power within and discovers her ability to create life (and end it). Offering a stunning visual treat for fans, this evocative, horror-tinged fairytale explores the labyrinth of sexuality and birth. If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power was written by Halsey and directed by Colin Tilley. The album was produced by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. The film was produced by Halsey, Jamee Ranta and Anthony Li.

In a four-star review, NME praised the album as “an intricate and an endlessly compelling artistic statement that only Halsey could have made.”Pitchfork observed, Halsey lets horror of the body, of the mind, of mortality radiate outward. The result is alluring and spectral. It’s their best work yet. SPIN said,  Halsey is not a woman, they’re a rock God. And IICHLIWP proves she’s earned the title.

The five-track effort proves to be an evocative showcase by the budding singer, who eyes unyielding love and happiness. Established in standout records “Standards” and “Thrive,” Jordan’s buttery vocals and gentle energy are supple enough to keep listeners enthralled for the long run. After a successful trek as an opener on Duckwrth’s ‘A SuperGood Tour’ last month, Remain Calm is the next step in cementing Ward’s leap into stardom. In honor of his new EP, Ward held an intimate release party in Los Angeles to celebrate his journey, where he treated attendees to a live performance.  Listen HERE.

Within the last several years, Jordan Ward has emerged as one of R&B’s rising stars. Developing an affinity for music and dance at a very early age, Jordan polished his skillset after first trying his hand as a choir member before transitioning into musical theatre. His influences include a diverse roster of music luminaries ranging from Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, Lauryn Hill, Kanye West, Tupac, The Notorious B.I.G., Nas, and more. After first experimenting with rap, Ward later focused on singing and dancing. By 18, he moved to Los Angeles and joined Justin Bieber’s Purpose Tour in 2016. Ward’s precocious dance abilities earned him gigs as a dancer for Janet Jackson and Beyonce, as he appeared in the singer’s Homecoming documentary for her epic Coachella performance.

In 2017, Ward began his musical quest after releasing his EP, A Peak at the Summit. It wasn’t until 2019 that Ward’s breakthrough became the talk of R&B. His debut album Valley Hopefuls was propelled by his single “Okok (Hibachi)” and “Sandiego,” which was produced by singer Arin Ray and music producer heavyweight No ID. Now, Ward’s silky croons and elevated songwriting abilities are at peak form as he readies his journey into universal acclaim in the R&B world.

THE BLUE CARD TEAM

RUNNING THE NYC MARATHON–AND OTHER GLOBAL RACES–TO RAISE MILLIONS FOR HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS

For the 50th anniversary of the running of the NYC Marathon, The Blue Card, a national non-profit organization dedicated to aiding over 3,000 needy Holocaust survivors households is thrilled to be partnering with the race for the eleventh consecutive year. The TCS New York City Marathon is one of the largest marathons in the world, 26.2 miles, running through the five boroughs of NYC, and hosting runners from more than 100 countries.

“The New York City Marathon showcases the resilience and the fortitude of this great city,” states The Blue Card’s Executive Director, Masha Pearl. “We’re thrilled to have Team Blue Card running among athletes from around the world once again, and the ability to use this great gathering to raise much needed awareness and funds for holocaust survivors.”

The Blue Card has partnered with the NYC Marathon for this initiative since 2009 as ‘Team Blue Card.’ These 50 runners use their training, platform, and the event to raise funds and awareness for The Blue Card, aiding the organization’s mission of helping holocaust survivors in need. Historically, ‘Team Blue Card’ has raised a grand total of $2 Million through their combined efforts over the last 11 years, fundraising through social media, crowdfunding, employer gift matching, sponsorships, as well as through family and friends.

Team Blue Card’s efforts extend beyond the NYC Marathon. The Blue Card has been an Official Charity Partner of the Miami Half/Full Marathon since 2011, the TD 5 Borough Bike Tour in New York City since 2011, and team members have also participated in the  NYC Panasonic Lifetime Triathlon as well as numerous other national and international events including Germany, Tel-Aviv and Jerusalem, Israel, and Italy. Our endurance team participants come from around the world, including Argentina, Austria, France, Israel, Italy, Mexico, and South Africa.

There is still opportunity to run with Team Blue Card—or to support from the sidelines. More details can be found here: https://bluecardfund.org/become-involved/team-blue-card/.

Funds raised go toward providing Holocaust survivors with the following services daily:

  • Education & Outreach Programs:
    • Person-Centered, Trauma-Informed (PCTI) training for dental and medical professionals working with Holocaust survivors
    • The Blue Card-Lissner Hospital Visitation Program – Volunteer visits to hospitalized Holocaust survivors.
    • Nutrition guidance
  • Jewish Holiday – Provides financial support for the High Holidays, Hannukah, and for Passover, giving survivors the financial means for a better holiday season.
  • Mazel Tov Birthday – Provides survivors with a card and a check on their birthday. This is particularly meaningful for holocaust survivors who lost their entire family during the war.
  • FreeStyle Libre Glucose Monitoring: The Freestyle Libre 2 system continuously measures glucose data with customizable, optional real time alarms The unit gives people with diabetes excellent accuracy and actionable information to better manage their condition.
  • Grant assistance for emergency needs, including:
    • Housing and related costs to prevent eviction, homelessness, or utility shut-off

    • Food purchase
    • Medical and dental care, including medical equipment not covered by insurance
    • Emergency relocation
    • Essential clothing and footwear
    • Purchase and repair or essential major and minor appliance
  • Aid to survivors battling cancer through the Siggi B. Wilzig Fighting Cancer Together program
  • Emergency Prevention Programs, including
    • Monthly stipend for poverty-stricken survivors
    • Telephone emergency response system

The Blue Card, established in 1934 in Germany and organized in the U.S. in 1939, is the only organization whose sole mission is to provide critical financial aid for emergency medical, dental, housing and food needs to survivors of Nazi persecution. While the Holocaust seems like a long ago nightmare, for survivors it is a continuing one. Of the 75,000 Holocaust survivors in the U.S., one-third live at or below the federal poverty level. For many, the losses they experienced decades ago are compounded by their current struggles to subsist on meager incomes and threadbare or nonexistent support systems.  Studies show that Holocaust survivors have higher incidences of mental illness, cancer, and other debilitating diseases.

You can donate to The Blue Card Fund here: https://bluecardfund.org/become-involved/donate/

About The Blue Card

Established in Germany in 1934 as a grassroots effort and re-established in the United States in 1939 to aid refugees resettling in America, The Blue Card continues today to provide direct financial assistance to needy Holocaust survivors who live at or near the poverty line. As this population ages, with many now living into their 80s and 90s, their needs have drastically increased and changed, giving rise to the need for funding of essential needs. Funds raised are used to finance many diverse programs including stipendiary, medical/dental, cancer, vitamin/nutrition and holiday as well as other initiatives for this frail and often neglected population.

The Blue Card has distributed over $46 million to date, with 100 percent of individual donations going directly to survivors. For more information on The Blue Card, please visit www.bluecardfund.org.
