2018 ROLLS-ROYCE PHANTOM

Watch the Unveiling LIVE!

By Shin Takei × Vaughn Lowery

July 27, 2017 was an epic day in London.  No it’s not about Brexit or the revival of the Beatles. It’s the introduction of the eighth Rolls Royce Phantom which started in 1925 with the first Phantom. Owned by those who seek extraordinary luxury the Phantom has been labelled the Best Car in the World. The actor, dancer entertainer Fred Astaire owned a Phantom I. Throughout its history those demanding the highest luxury drove a Phantom.

History of Phantom

History of Phantom (1925-2016)

The all-new 2018 Phantom VIII looks magnificent and no one will mistake it for anything but a Rolls Royce. A new sloping radiator grill with chrome strips starting at the top corners and leading back to wrap over the windshield is design cue that harks back to earlier Phantoms. The car is lower than the Phantom VII but looks more substantial and definitely keeps the Rolls Royce DNA.

2

The Phantom VIII features an all-aluminum chassis architecture that will be shared by all future models. It gives “A Magic Carpet Ride” for the passengers because it’s lighter, stiffer, quieter and technologically advanced. As you enter the “Suite”, the “Embrace” feature senses your presence and softly closes the door after you. You are then in front of “The Gallery” a full-width art work that can be commissioned that spans the entire dashboard. Of course, there are champagne coolers and crystal flutes and wine chillers and glasses that you can enjoy in your individual suite. The Suite is the chamber of the most luxurious surrounding inside any car and one you would want in your house.

4

An all-new 6.75 Liter Twin Turbo V12 powers the Phantom VIII and is quieter and smoother than ever. We have yet to drive or ride in one yet, but we will be reporting on it as soon as we get out hands on one. For more information, visit Rolls Royce Motor Cars Official.

Polar cruise specialist Poseidon Expeditions recently turned its hand to filmmaking and walked with two awards from some 15 honors handed out at the 3rd Russian Fulldome Festival and Planetarium Conference 2017 held June 13-15, 2017, in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Yaroslavl, Russia.

unnamed-2Over the three-day gathering, the audience and jury viewed 50 feature films and video clips produced by creative teams from over 20 countries including Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Germany, the United States, France, Greece, Argentina and Thailand. The conference itself assembled university lecturers, leading researchers, astronomers, fulldome producers, planetarium educators and others interested in the development and popularization of fulldome format. (According to Wikipedia, “Fulldome refers to immersive dome-based video projection environments. The dome, horizontal or tilted, is filled with real-time (interactive) or pre-rendered (linear) computer animations, live capture images, or composited environments.”)

On the festival jury were eminent Russian scientists, planetarians and fulldome lovers: Sergey Yazev, head of the Jury, Director of the ISU Observatory; Thomas Kraupe, Director of Hamburg Planetarium; Mikhail Gavrilov, Academic Secretary of the Scientific Council on Astronomy at the Russian Academy of Science; Theofanis Markopoulos, planetarium producer; Dmitry Belonozhko, Professor at the Department of Physics of Yaroslavl State University.

unnamed-3To evaluate each production jury members followed such criteria as the scientific value of the presented content, the quality of the film script and the visuals, the correspondence between the soundtrack and footage, and finally the uniqueness of the idea behind the film. Each fulldome production could be awarded the maximum of 25 points.

Poseidon Expeditions’’ 360º VR film, Our North Pole 360 took awards in the categories Best Fulldome Short Film and People’s Choice Award (short film). This state-of-the-art 360º virtual reality video experience uses pioneering techniques to share the North Pole realm with an online audience.
