Maometto Secondo and La Sonnambula

Teatro Nuovo, the innovative young company that brought New York its first opera performances since the pandemic shutdown, announced its return to full indoor activity in July 2022 with Rossini‘s towering Maometto Secondo and Bellini‘s beloved La Sonnambula. The pair of operas will be performed July 9 and 10 at Montclair State University (New Jersey) and July 13 and 14 at Jazz at Lincoln Center‘s Rose Theater.  

The company will also resume its renowned training program, giving an immersive course in Bel Canto style and technique to 22 elite young singers who will serve as the understudies and chorus of the two operas. As before, the performances will be accompanied by Teatro Nuovo’s own hand-picked orchestra of period-instrument players, with its groundbreaking restoration of the performance setup used in the Bel Canto era. 

“Our approach was radical but unproven when we rolled it out in 2018,” said Artistic Director Will Crutchfield in announcing the new season, “and I’m thrilled to say the results were even more exciting than we could have hoped. We have spent the whole pandemic period working together to take it to the next level, and we can’t wait to share it again with the public.” 

Maometto (1820) depicts the Siege of Negroponte by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II, a tale of doomed valor, forbidden love, and heroic self-sacrifice under the shadow of war. Sonnambula (1831) is a story of village life and wedding bells, whose joyous finale is postponed by the frisson of a sleepwalking bride mistaken for a ghost. 

The headliners of the Maometto cast will be three returning artists—bass Hans Tashjian in the title role, mezzo Hannah Ludwig as Calbo, and tenor Nicholas Simpson as Paolo Erisso – who won accolades last summer as Figaro, Rosina, and Almaviva in The Barber of Seville. They are joined by the brilliant Canadian mezzo Simone McIntosh in her Teatro Nuovo debut as Anna Erisso. 

The Sonnambula cast is led by soprano Teresa Castillo as the titular sleepwalker, returning after her debut as Creusa in Medea in Corinto in Teatro Nuovo’s first season in 2018. Elvino will be sung by the Mexican tenor Enrique Guzmán in his New York debut, and returning artists Dorian McCall (bass-baritone), Meagan Sill (soprano), and Allison Gish (mezzo-soprano) will be heard as Rodolfo, Lisa, and Teresa. 

Associate Artistic Director Jakob Lehmann emphasized the significance of Maometto, one of the nine serious operas composed by Rossini for the Teatro San Carlo of Naples, and the first one in Teatro Nuovo’s repertory: “We all know the pure delight of Rossini,” he said, “with his melodies, his brilliant orchestral colors, his virtuosity, his strokes of drama. And the farther you get into his mature operas, the more you stand in awe of the architecture. He pushed his blueprints to their limits—the structures grow until they reach as far as the eye can see, but they never bend or break.”

Crutchfield spoke of a complementary quality in La sonnambula: “Bellini never had to invent a musical form in his life—Rossini had done it all. So, he could take that inheritance and fill it to the brim with his unique gift, which was a kind of melody the world had never heard before. People found it hypnotic. Even supposed opposites like Verdi and Wagner were under Bellini’s spell.” 

Teatro Nuovo’s orchestra, like those of Italy in the age of Bel Canto, is led jointly by a violinist and a keyboardist, without a standup conductor. In 2022, Crutchfield will serve as maestro al cembalo (keyboard director) for the Bellini opera and Lehmann as primo violino e capo d’orchestra (violinist-director) for the Rossini. They will be joined by two musical directors and co-directors, making Teatro Nuovo debuts: Australian violinist Rachael Beesley in La sonnambula and Lucy Tucker Yates, the company’s Director of Language Studies, as keyboard leader for Maometto. Audiences and critics have been quick to recognize what a difference this makes. At Teatro Nuovo’s debut in 2018, Heidi Waleson reported in The Wall Street Journal that “the effect is transformative.” The following year she returned to observe “an unusually flexible sense of pacing… remarkably different from conventional performances of these operas.” In 2019, James Jorden in The Observer called it “revelatory…the orchestra seemed to beat with a single heart.”

In 2021, Anthony Tommasini in The New York Times wrote of “a fresh, lively performance full of ideas and rich in subtleties” by performers emboldened “to start from scratch and think for themselves.” Philip Pierce, the company’s Executive Director, underlined the ensemble nature of the experience: “Last summer we faced the extreme challenges of the pandemic, with strict health protocols and a fifty-plus company living more or less in a Covid bubble—and never have I seen such discipline and esprit de corps. The joy of making music together in this group is irresistible.”

PUBLIQuartet Freedom and Faith Performance

Death of Classical will continue its third season of The Angel’s Share this August, with the innovative PUBLIQuartet performing in the Catacombs of The Green-Wood Cemetery on August 4, 6, and 7. The Angel’s Share is the Death of Classical’s second concert series, curated by the creator, curator, and leader of the series, Andrew Ousley, in partnership with Green-Wood. The perform will take place in the Catacombs of The Green-Wood Cemetary in Brooklyn, New York City.

The quartet will perform a program inspired by its GRAMMY-nominated 2019 album Freedom and Faith, featuring works that celebrate women composers through the ages, and explore ideas of spirituality, resilience, and inspiration.

Performances of Freedom and Faith will take place over the course of three evenings, with two performances per night, and include music by Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, Jessie Montgomery, Hildegard von Bingen, as well as original MIND THE GAP compositions by PUBLIQuartet.

The innovative, barrier-breaking string quartet performs a program inspired by its GRAMMY-nominated album Freedom and Faith, featuring music that celebrates women composers through the ages, and explores ideas of spirituality, resilience, and inspiration.

The ensemble is innovating the performance of classic music and opera by incorporating free-flowing improvisational instrumentation and group compositions into their exhibitions. Death of Classical represents a modern take on timeless classic compositions by giving a voice to emerging performers and underrepresented composers. While many people say “Classical Music is Dead,” this group’s revitalized take on classical music allows for the group’s performances to reach new, younger, unexpected audiences then ever before. With their innovative and exciting twist on the performing arts, Death of Classic is reviving a passion for the genre.

Concerts feature works by Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, Jessie Montgomery, Hildegard von Bingen, and original MIND THE GAP compositions by PUBLIQuartet.

Each performance includes a pre-concert reception with a whiskey tasting overlooking the Manhattan skyline and harbor at sunset, with distilleries including Madre Mezcal, Appalachian Gap Distillery, Ume Plum Liqueur, and more

The Angel’s Share series takes its name from the distiller’s term for whiskey that evaporates while maturing in the barrel, thus going to the angels. Accordingly, the live concert events on August 4, 6, and 7 will open with a spirits tasting, with distilleries including Madre MezcalAppalachian Gap DistilleryUme Plum Liqueur, and more. The Angel’s Share is curated by Andrew Ousley and co-presented by Death of Classical and The Green-Wood Historic Fund.

Teatro Nuovo’s The Barber of Seville

On Wednesday night, 360 Magazine had the pleasure of viewing Teatro Nuovo‘s The Barber of Seville. While we were originally visiting Chicago on assignment, after finding out about this monumental production, we knew it couldn’t be missed. We immediately dropped what we were doing and used our Amtrak monthly pass to dash to Damrosch Park in New York City.

Our experience was impressive from the start as soon as we entered the space. Damrosch Park is part of the Lincoln Center complex nearby Fordham University Lincoln Center. It includes the Daniel and Florence Guggenheim outdoor bandshell in the greenspace’s center. The park encompasses the Metropolitan Opera House, the New York State Theater (now the David H. Koch Theater), and Philharmonic Hall (later Avery Fisher Hall and now David Geffen Hall).

The opera buffa invited in guests with a whimsical atmosphere of musical merrymaking. This classic two-act opera, originally by Gioachino Rossini with an Italian libretto by Cesare Sterbini, was developed into a cutting-edge interpretation by Teatro Nuovo–Italian for the new theater. The expansive stage, which included a backdrop with soft, rosy clouds, was decorated with a cast of performers donning black-tie apparel. The rostrum was well-lit and easily viewable from all angles of the venue.

The enchanted lighting cast a sultry wash of deep blue hues over all the guests in attendance. Opera enthusiasts of all ages were present for one of the first shows since lockdown. Joining us were people from all ages, races and walks of life: biracial couples, youthful gay couples, and arts aficionados who appeared to be well into their 90s. This sensual, post-pandemic moment of calm finally brought New York’s community of playwrights, musical lovers, and opera fans together yet again.

This marvelous production of The Barber of Seville has surely been long-awaited by many – a worthy cause for celebration. Still, Teatro Nuovo employed all current CDC guidelines. Similar to the seating at fashion shows, guests were organized into pods of two people. Security guards were also present at the venue to enforce these restrictions.

The orchestra was unbelievably incredible, climaxing to a crashing cadenza that captivated the entire audience. Impressively, the conductor of the show also played violin. The cast was headlined by mezzo-soprano Hannah Ludwig. She was joined by the Figaro of Bass, Hans Tashjian, and the Almaviva of tenor, Nicholas Simpson. The three artists are additionally accompanied by soprano Alina Tamborini as Berta, bass Daniel Fridley as Don Basilio, and baritones Scott Purcell and Kyle Oliver as Bartolo and Fiorello, respectively. All of the singers had impressive skill and exhibited raw, uninhibited talent. Their on-stage vulnerability lent for an impassioned delivery which was impactful to all who were lucky enough to hear it. Bellowing vocals swelled the venue with their prolific pipes.

The opera included an intermission, which kindly allowed for guests to relive themselves and enjoy the provided refreshments.

The classic tale of this passionate love story enraptured the audience of emotional fans. 360 Magazine had goosebumps and became teary-eyed at the sublime, awe-inspiring rendition. The vibrant energy of love made one of our team members wish that their parents were still alive to witness this event. This romantic, operatic show was reminiscent of a foreign film gone wild. Fortunately, sub-captions were included.

Teatro Nuovo’s production of The Barber of Seville was truly the performance of a lifetime. 360 Magazine can now joyously cross seeing this spectacular show off of our bucket list.

THE DALLAS OPERA LAUNCHES NEW STREAMING PLATFORM FOR GLOBAL AUDIENCE: THEDALLASOPERA.TV

Monthly Subscription Provides Access to Video Catalogue from tdo network, OperaKids Programs, and Performances; New Content will be Added Regularly

Premium Films—Known as Originals—to be Featured Periodically as Special Pay-Per-View Rentals

The Dallas Opera (TDO) announces the launch of its new subscription streaming platform. Available starting today, the website brings together TDO’s full catalogue of existing video content—which ranges from full opera productions for audiences of all ages, to musical conversations and original opera-themed sit-com style episodes, to artist-hosted series that spotlight their interests and careers, educational series, and more—with new original opera films created specifically for a virtual audience.

The Dallas Opera represents a new avenue of presentation and production for an opera company, beyond the physical space of an opera house. Rather than offering only streams of staged productions filmed archivally, The Dallas Opera’s platform offers primarily original content filmed exclusively for streaming, available for viewing 24/7, 365 days a year by a global audience.

“We are so thrilled that thedallasopera.TV is launching today,” said Ian Derrer, The Dallas Opera’s Kern Wildenthal General Director and CEO. “To watch this project go from idea to reality in less than a year has been amazing to see, and we’re so proud of the content that we have ready to offer our global audience. This platform truly helps redefine our company as a leader in digital content, as well as on the opera house stage. We are breaking new ground in the field while continuing to preserve the great traditions of live opera.”

“What we’ve learned over the course of the past year without live performances is that there is a thirst for quality online content, and we are so happy to lead the way in producing that for our eager fans around the world,” said David Lomelí, a tenor, TDO’s Artistic Consultant, and creative force behind the initiative. “Statistics show that viewers ages 18-34 and 34-45 are online for more than 10 hours each day, and our efforts to reach that demographic—through unique and creative offerings—have proven successful, growing in just a year from 2,000 unique views in March 2020 to more than 150 million unique views today on our Facebook channel. Our hope is that this streaming model will reach even more.”

Subscriptions to the streaming platform are available for $4.99/month with a free seven-day trial. In addition, premium content–Originals–will be offered periodically at a pay-per-view price.

Two Originals are available as thedallasopera.TV launches today: “That Which We Love”, a recital by acclaimed mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard, and “Vanished,” a three-part art film starring countertenor John Holiday and tenor Russell Thomas with music by Gluck, Monteverdi, and Janáček assembled into a new narrative. A third original, “The Heart of the Song,” featuring conversation with and performances by tenors Javier Camarena, Rolando Villazón, and David Lomelí, will be released on May 25 for a limited viewing period.

Video content on thedallasopera.TV will be housed in four categories—Originals, Stages, tdo network, and OperaKids—and available via an app for mobile devices (iOS and Android), on smart TVs via Fire TV and Roku, and on the website for desktop/laptop users.

·       “That Which We Love” – Isabel Leonard in recital, pianist John Arida

This program features a mix of classical and popular songs by Sondheim, Bernstein, Kern, Offenbach, Berlioz, Bellini, and others. Rental fee = $6.99 for three months. Available now.

·       “Vanished” – an art film in three parts about longing, heartbreak, and the search for love featuring John Holiday and Russell Thomas

Directed by bass-baritone and film-maker Ryan McKinny, Vanished uses a variety of special effects and cinematic techniques to create the world of imagination depicted in the film. The soundtrack includes all 22 songs from Janáček’s “The Diary of One Who Disappeared”, as well as scenes from Gluck’s “Orfeo ed Euridice,” and Monteverdi’s “L’incoronazione di Poppea.”

Pianists for “Vanished” are Kevin J. Miller and Kathleen Kelly. The story is by Ryan McKinny, Tonya McKinny, and Kathleen Kelly. McKinny’s production company, Helio Arts, filmed, produced, and edited the film. Rental fee = $19.99 for all three episodes for six months. Available now.

·       “The Heart of the Song” – tenors Javier Camarena, Rolando Villazón, and David Lomelí

Three famous Mexican-born tenors and friends engage in serious conversation and humor-laced repartee as they offer a celebration of much-loved Mexican and Latin American songs. Filmed in Dallas, Zürich, and Paris, the show is produced by director Laura Prieto and producer Jeremy Tang. English subtitles are provided for the songs, which are all sung in Spanish.

Rental fee = $11.99. Available May 25-31 only.

Stages

Stages content is included with thedallasopera.TV subscriptions, and will feature a catalogue of “greatest hits” from The Dallas Opera, including full-length operas, concerts, recitals, and archival video streams and radio broadcasts.

Thedallasopera.TV platform launch includes:

·       The company’s 2019 production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute, presented in the 1999 Sir Peter Hall production. Conducted by Emmanuel Villaume, TDO’s Mrs. Eugene McDermott Music Director, the cast includes Italian tenor Paolo Fanale as Tamino, soprano Andrea Carroll as Pamina, soprano Jeni Houser as The Queen of the Night, baritone Sean Michael Plumb as Papageno, and bass Morris Robinson as Sarastro. Kyle Lang directed the production for TDO.

·       “The John Holiday Experience,” a recital by recent finalist on The Voice, was recorded April 9 at the Winspear Opera House in TDO’s first live presentation since early 2020. Holiday, along with pianists Kevin J. Miller and Neeki Bey, performs a wide-ranging program of songs by Stevie Wonder, George Gershwin, Henri Duparc, Tyshawn Sorey, Norah Jones, and others.

·       A celebration of the first five years of The Dallas Opera Hart Institute for Women Conductors, which features selections from the five annual Showcase Concerts that mark the culmination of each year’s Institute. Featuring Hart Institute participants and The Dallas Opera conducting The Dallas Opera Orchestra.

tdo network

Launched in February 2020, tdo network has amassed a viewership of nearly 157 million followers from 50 countries in the past year with its ever-evolving collection of whimsical, topical, and informative original content hosted by artists and social media influencers. Access to all tdo network content is included with thedallasopera.TV subscriptions.

OperaKids

OperaKids offers programming for children, as well as educational resources for parents and children, all produced by The Dallas Opera’s education department and included in the monthly subscription price.

Two family operas are available now, as is Kids Opera Boot CampTM:

·       “Jack and the Beanstalk” (music by Sir Arthur Sullivan and others; words and story adaption by John Davies) brings the classic fairy tale to the opera stage in a screen adaptation by Mary Dibbern and Ryan Lescalleet of John Davies’ delightful children’s opera.

·       “Dr. Miracle” (music by Georges Bizet and others/libretto by Leon Battue and Ludovic Halévy) tells the tale of young love through a series of disguises, mishaps, and eventual happily-ever-after in a screen adaptation by Mary Dibbern and Ryan Lescalleet of this opera in one act that the composer wrote when he, too, was just a teen.

·       Kids Opera Boot CampTM—an interactive look behind the scenes at the opera, where viewers can learn from a series of five video lessons what it takes to make an opera, how to make an opera set, and how to learn music like an opera singer. Each of the five episodes is designed to show students what it takes to create opera through an engaging combination of hands-on activities, fun facts, and laugh-out-loud characters. The program concludes with a performance of The Bremen Town Musicians—a screen adaptation by Mary Dibbern and Ryan Lescalleet of John Davies’ delightful children’s opera about the value of teamwork. Designed for grades K-6.

Lunar New Year x The Met

The Metropolitan Museum of Art will host its annual Lunar New Year Festival on Saturday, February 1, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Lunar New Year Festival: Year of the Rat will feature dozens of engaging programs—for visitors of all ages—that reflect traditions from across Asia.

Highlights include Sesame Street Puppeteers Featuring Alan Muraoka along with artist-led workshops and interactive gallery activities like a Hand-Pulled Noodle Demonstration. All Lunar New Year Festival programming is free with Museum admission.

The event is made possible in part by the E.H.A. Foundation and Tiger Baron Foundation. It is presented by the Museum’s Advisory Committee on Cultural Engagement and Education Department.

Performances

Visitors will be welcomed in the Great Hall with the vibrant and beloved opening parade by the Chinese Center on Long Island Lion Troupe. The Sesame Street Puppeteers Featuring Alan Muraoka will perform sing-a-longs that explore the traditions of Lunar New Year, followed by a fun photo-op with Sesame Street characters. Throughout the afternoon, there will also be a variety of performances by the New York Chinese Cultural Center dancers, the Chinese Center on Long Island Lion Troupe, and drummers from the New York Korean Performing Arts Center. Tickets for each event will be distributed 15 minutes prior at the Grace Rainey Rodgers Auditorium.

In Gallery 217, the Astor Court, Vincent Chong, a queer, mixed-race Chinese American artist, will explore art and identity using gold calligraphy and festive fans through 15-minute performances presented every 45 minutes.

Art Activities and Demonstrations

Several artist-led workshops will be offered as part of Lunar New Year Festival: Year of the Rat. Zodiac Zones, for example, will invite guests to discover and learn about their zodiac signs and proudly wear their zodiac animal button. Visitors of all ages can try their hand at different creative workshops—from creating a movable dragon toy that brings good luck in Fierce Dragon Creations to expressing themselves with calligraphy under the guidance of master Chinese calligrapher Zhou Bin from iCanMandarin and designing a pellet drum in Den-den Daiko Drum Making, and more. Families can celebrate and learn through food in a Wu-Wo Tea Ceremony & Bubble Tea Gathering with Ten Ren Tea and Ginseng Co. and a Hand-Pulled Noodle Demonstration. All are welcome to join artist and educator Emily Mock in Festive Feast, where participants can add to the communal paper feast installation for the kitchen gods.

Related Installation

The Met is presenting Celebrating the Year of the Rat, January 17–July 19, 2020, in the Charlotte C. Weber Galleries for the Arts of Ancient China. The exhibition features remarkable works from The Met collection that illustrate the rat’s ubiquitous presence in people’s daily lives as an active, agile, and smart creature.

Uris Center for Education, located near the ground-floor entrance at Fifth Avenue and 81st Street. All Lunar New Year Festival programs are free with Museum admission. Suggested Museum admission is $25 for adults, $17 for seniors (65 and over), and $12 for students. Children under 12 who are accompanied by an adult are free.

Kanye West will bring his original opera Mary to New York City’s famed David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center. Directed by Vanessa Beecroft, Mary was first staged at Art Basel Miami, and follows Nebuchadnezzar, West’s first opera, which premiered last month at the Hollywood Bowl. 
 
Mary is an original opera, based on the biblical story of the miraculous events surrounding the birth of Jesus Christ. The Books of Matthew and Luke recount the story of Mary, who was divinely chosen by God to bring forth the Messiah.    
 
West’s Mary brings together elements from different worlds – including opera, fine art, modern dance, and gospel music – to create a new visual interpretation and innovative performance structure. Mary is performed by the Sunday Service collective, a ministry formed in January of 2019. With the Sunday Service collective working alongside a cast of professional opera singers, Mary represents an innovative interpretation of West’s own music, gospel standards, and traditional opera alike.

KANYE WEST TO DEBUT NEW OPERA ‘NEBUCHADNEZZAR’ AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL THIS SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 24

On Sunday, November 24thKanye West will debut the new opera ‘Nebuchadnezzar’ live at the Hollywood Bowl. The opera, directed by Vanessa Beecroft, will feature the Sunday Service collective, as well as singer Peter Collins and the group Infinity’s Song.

Nebuchadnezzar is an original opera, based on the biblical story of the Babylonian King from the Book of Daniel. Set in the 6th century BC, the Book of Daniel recounts Nebuchadnezzar’s transition from wicked, imperious, self-declared ruler to a true believer who finds salvation in his faith.

West conceived of this opera as an expression of his commitment to both his faith and ever-expanding musical palette. Nebuchadnezzar brings together elements from different worlds, including opera, fine art, modern dance, and gospel music, to create an innovative performance structure. West’s sound is the bridge between these artforms. 

Vanessa Beecroft’s work has been shown internationally since 1993 and often presents social commentary and critique. She is best known for her conceptual performance art, which often references the historical and political associations of the place in which the installation is held. Since 2008, Vanessa has collaborated extensively with Kanye West.

THE MERRION IN DUBLIN PRESENTS ‘OPERA IN THE GARDEN’ WITH THE WEXFORD FESTIVAL OPERA

This summer, the 5-star Merrion Hotel in Dublin will once again partner with the Wexford Festival Opera for two exclusive performances on June 5 and 6, 2019 to present “Opera in the Garden” in The Merrion’s own private gardens in the heart of Dublin.
During the event, guests will have a preview of one of the Wexford Festival Opera‘s 2019 ShortWork opera productions. Georges Bizet’s one-act comic operette, Le Docteur Miracle, centered around a young man’s attempt to win the hand of the mayor’s daughter, will be specially staged to complement the elegant backdrop of The Merrion’s gardens.

Peter MacCann, General Manager of The Merrion Hotel, said: “We are delighted to welcome the world-renowned Wexford Opera Company to perform one of their ShortWork operas against the backdrop of The Merrion’s tranquil terrace gardens. Last year’s event was a huge success and we were thrilled with how it was received by all those in attendance.”

The black-tie event begins with a Champagne reception on the terrace, followed by the performance, and concludes with a private dinner prepared by Executive Head Chef Ed Cooney and served in the Georgian salons of The Merrion.
Tickets for this event are limited to 100 per night, and are priced at €295 (approx. US$332) per person, including the Champagne reception, performance and dinner with wines.

Newly recorded songs from superstar artists Lana Del Rey (“You Must Love Me”, Evita), Nicole Scherzinger (“Memory”, Cats) and Gregory Porter (“Light at the End of the Tunnel”, Starlight Express) and add to the collection of his cherished works from the past five decades.

The Cats classic “Memory” by Nicole Scherzinger is available now as an instant grat track. It’s a dream, and a lifelong accomplishment.”

The set also contains recordings by world-class performers such as Barbra Streisand, Madonna, Michael Crawford, Sarah Brightman, Michael Ball, and released for the first time, Beyonce singing “Learn To Be Lonely” from the 2005 Academy Awards with Lloyd Webber accompanying on piano.

UNMASKED: THE PLATINUM COLLECTION is available as 2 CD and 4 CD editions. The 4-disc version contains an exclusive 40-page book with a personally penned introduction from Lloyd Webber and in-depth notes on each track, written by respected theatre critic and Lloyd Webber biographer Michael Coveney, together with tributes from Barbra Streisand and Glenn Close among others.

The fourth disc encompasses a mix of overtures and showstoppers from Lloyd Webber‘s key works, as well as newly created orchestral suites. The five new orchestral suites have been specially prepared from existing recordings, emphasising the grand orchestral aspects of his work. All CDs were mastered at Abbey Road Studios.
