Helsinki Energy Challenge

Helsinki wants to offer a platform for new, sustainable and innovative solutions, and, on 27 February, the City opened the international Helsinki Energy Challenge. The competition seeks to find solutions, by means of which the city can be heated in a sustainable way without coal and with as little biomass as possible during the upcoming decades. The grand prize of the competition is one million euros. The City of Helsinki lives up to its global responsibility in the fight against climate change and is committed to sharing the results of the competition openly, in order to allow other cities to benefit from them in their own climate work. The role of the cities in the fight against the climate crisis is decisive.

Despite the world situation caused by the coronavirus, the City of Helsinki keeps investing heavily in its climate work. The climate crisis has not been cancelled and the City is still working its way towards a carbon neutral Helsinki. In order to get the best possible result out of the Helsinki Energy Challenge even in this changed situation, it has been decided that the registration phase is prolonged. The prolonged registration phase ends on 30 September 2020. The finalist teams invited to the second phase of the competition are announced in the beginning of November and the winner of the competition will be revealed in March 2021.

“Our competition got off to a great start at the end of February, and the reception has been overwhelmingly positive both in Finland and abroad. It is clear that we have started something unique. However, the changed world situation caused by the coronavirus comes at a difficult stage in respect to our competition. Innovators and potential competitors now need time to adapt to the new situation and prolonging the registration phase of the competition is necessary at this point. The competition process will remain otherwise unaltered. Despite the coronavirus, we need to stick to the climate goals. We still have to get rid of coal and we want to replace it with long-term sustainable solutions. We are fulfilling our responsibility in the fight against the global climate crisis and we will not let it wait until the coronavirus crisis has blown over. Both the Helsinki Energy Challenge and our other climate efforts continue at full strength”, notes Helsinki Mayor Jan Vapaavuori.

During the prolonged registration phase of the Helsinki Energy Challenge, there will be additional webinars and other virtual events, during which the competitors can learn more about the competition, but also look for members to their competition team. Interested parties are encouraged to enter the competition as diversified and cross-disciplinary teams.

Aftermath of Easter Eating

1) First and foremost, give yourself a break and quit being so hard on yourself. There are no Slip-ups once you have a healthy relationship with food and with eating, because a slip-up simply doesn’t exist in that type of relationship. There are no “bad foods” or “magic foods.” One meal or even one day will not make or break you! Too often people (especially those trying to follow overly restrictive diets) will try hard to avoid certain foods or entire food groups, which is incredibly difficult to stick with for most people, not to mention typically unhealthy. This is where the notion of “slipping up” comes in. There is no place for guilt or self-admonishment in a healthy relationship with food. Enjoy the foods you like, but be mindful of the foods you should eat more of/more often and the foods that you may want to eat less of. If you do happen to eat more of the “fun foods” in a given period of time, let it go and just decide to do better tomorrow.

2) If you know there is an event coming up in which there will be more of the “fun food”, plan for that. Perhaps eat a little cleaner that morning, knowing you will be indulging more later that evening. Higher fiber foods can help fill you up and keep you full longer. Fruits and vegetables are very high in fiber, but have very few Calories. Make half your plate full of these foods. When it comes to grains and processed foods made from grains (i.e. breads, crackers, pastas, etc.), opt for the whole grain versions. They contain more fiber. If the first word in the ingredient list isn’t “whole,” then it’s not whole grain. Sometimes it is hard to get in enough fiber, so taking a fiber supplement can help on those days. Men need around 38 grams of fiber per day and women need around 26. Sometimes that is a bit more challenging to do. A fiber supplement can sometimes help. I recommend vitafusion Fiber Well gummies as they’re a great tasting way to help get some extra fiber to help meet your needs. A serving contains 5 grams of soluble prebiotic fiber. Prebiotics are what probiotics feed on.

3) Plan ahead of time. Planning and preparing the week’s meals in advance will not only help you save time and money, it helps you to eat healthier meals. Having a balanced meal prepared, packed, and ready to go can help keep you on track.

4) If there is something that you love (like I love ice cream), let yourself have it. Instead of trying to avoid it completely because some people out there say that you should have some “bad foods,” allow yourself to have some of what you love. Pick intentional places in your diet to allow these foods to happen. Maybe you know that on Friday, you will want a piece of cake, or a milkshake, or whatever it may be. Go into it knowing you will have one. Eat a balanced dinner and allow yourself to enjoy it without feelings of guilt or remorse. Making it intentional can help be more mindful about the portion sizes.

5) Be in the moment. We can easily overeat when we are distracted. I love food .… I mean I truly love food and most Registered Dietitians do. That does not mean I overeat. That means when I eat, I pay attention to the flavors, the smells, and I truly take that moment to appreciate the food that I’m eating. I think everyone deserves the right to enjoy eating. It’s easy to ignore the feelings of hunger and satiety if we are distracted. Try to reduce the distractions while you are eating and pay attention to how your body feels while you’re eating. Assess if you are truly hungry, or eating out of habit or boredom. After a few bites of that cake, are you still enjoying it as much as you did with the first bite? If you are, okay…eat it. If not, be done with it (yes…even if there is still some left on your plate). Try drinking water between every couple bites. This will make you slow down and give you the opportunity to pay attention to those feeling of satiety.

These are just a few ideas to help establish a good relationship with food. There are many more. My main goal working with almost all my patients is to help them establish a healthy relationship with food. While there are a lot of extreme diets out there and a lot of people who have some extreme opinions (without the education to back them up), navigating the world of nutrition can be hard. Bottom line, I truly feel that everyone, EVERYONE deserves the right to enjoy eating, and a healthy, balanced diet can still include those “fun foods” that may not give us a lot of nutrition, but they sure do make us happy.

Kosa – Off White

RISING BELIZEAN RAPPER KOSA Releases “Off White” Feat. Lil Durk — Debut Major Label Single!

NEW SIGNING TO RICH IMMIGRANTS/INTERSCOPE RECORDS

Rising Belizean rapper Kosa has unveiled a brand new track “Off White” featuring Chicago rapper Lil Durk. The track has all the makings of a trap hit but with Kosa’s injection of dulcet melody work amps up the single to be a repeat listen! The video, shot in the neighborhoods of Belize showcases glimpses of Kosa’s upbringing in the Central American country. Signed to Rich Immigrants/Interscope Records, Kosa proves to put his hometown on the map, and more importantly his undeniable star power.

About Kosa

When Belizean raised rapper Kosa started out in the music business he didn’t have the money to buy beats, so he learned to make them himself. That DIY approach paid off significantly who’s now also an engineer, producer, and songwriter. With increasing recognition for his sing-jay verses on tracks as “Same Energy,” and the platinum-selling “Si Tu Lo Dejas,” (alongside reggaetón singers Bad Bunny, Farruko and veteran Nicky Jam) coupled with his recent signing to Rich Immigrants/Interscope, Kosa’s advances has firmly placed him as one of Belize’s biggest music exports and rap’s newest favorite.

Kosa’s mother, raised in Long Island, New York, introduced him to hip-hop, which played an important role in shaping his musical direction. He grew up listening to an eclectic selection of Soul II Soul, Slick Rick, 50 Cent, Lil Wayne and more. A jack of all trades, Kosa’s ability to produce and songwrite allowed his hip hop influences to effortlessly blend with the sounds he was group up around like soca, reggae, dancehall and more. The result, a hypnotic blend of melodies and production that seamlessly fits into the current musical landscape. At work on his debut major label album, Kosa insists on staying true to his sonic roots to bring a fresh take to rap and hip hop while inspiring the other artists in Caribbean and Central America diaspora to embrace their space in the zeitgeist.

TOBi × Kemba Remix + Deluxe Album

TOBi TAPS BRONX’S KEMBA FOR THE “180” REMIX

ANNOUNCES DELUXE VERSION OF ALBUM, STILL +

LISTEN TO THE “180” REMIX

TOBi releases a remix to the Twigg produced “180” featuring a guest verse from KEMBA and announces STILL + (pre-save link), a deluxe version of his debut studio album, STILL. The album explores the multiple facets of masculinity and the vulnerability he went through shortly after immigration into Canada. STILL’s production largely came from Toronto’s Free n Losh, Grammy-winning !llmind as well as a return link up from Take A Daytrip. The deluxe includes two new songs along with remixes to TOBi’s favorite tracks including the “City Blues” Remix, featuring The Game, a “24” Remix featuring Toronto’s best: Haviah Mighty, SHAD, Jazz Cartier & Ejji Smith and now, “180.”

“I’m excited to give STILL more life by adding songs, putting on for Toronto and showing the themes of my life. This 180 remix I wrote, juxtaposes my teenage self with my current self, describing the shit I used to get into with my friends. There were certain things you couldn’t tell me as a kid, unless you had earned my respect. I find that now, I am that guy to some of my young boys. I feel like a protector sometimes, or a light on their path. Also, Kemba is one of my favorite lyricists right now, so getting him on there was mandatory,” says TOBi.

2019 would prove to be an impactful year for the 26 year old, having his single “City Blues,” premiered on Zane Lowe, performing to a sold out crowd in his hometown of Toronto, being featured on The Game’s Born 2 Rap in “Carmen Electra,” as well as Party Pupils “One Two Things.” He continued the momentum performing an original song, “Beige” on the COLORS platform, having his single, “Ride” featured in the 2019 season of HBO’s Ballers as well as teaming up with Soulection’s Sango in bouncy single, “Faces.”

K-Pop Rookie boy band, CRAVITY, break into the music scene with their debut album “CRAVITY SEASON 1. [HIDEOUT: REMEMBER WHO WE ARE]”. Within the first hour of their debut, 6 celebratory hashtags took up the worldwide trends on Twitter, including #STANCRAVITY. ‘HIDEOUT’ symbolizes the nine members stepping out into the world through an experience unique to them, and creating a safe haven where they can lean on each other. Title track, “Break All The Rules,” tells the story of 9 youths with strong ambitions venturing out on their first journey together, overcoming obstacles, and continuing to move forward without hesitation; with hopes of providing solace for anyone going through the same emotions. Leader and Rapper, Serim, states ; “the album encompasses tremor of excitement, and our desire to give delight and comfort to our fans.”

WATCH “BREAK ALL THE RULES” MUSIC VIDEO HERE

Inspiration behind the name, CRAVITY, came to fruition through the combination of “Creativity” and “Gravity,” Starship Entertainment’s new boy band for the first time in five years since Monsta X. Consisting of nine members, [Serim, Allen, Jungmo, Woobin, Wonjin, Minhee, Hyeongjun, Taeyoung, Seongmin], CRAVITY, which is also an acronym for “Center of Gravity,” is meant to attract/gravitate listeners into their unique universe, by pulling them in with their creativity, charm, and pure talent. As humans, we all have our own “first experiences”; whether that be in school, society, or in a relationship. When encountering new relationships, we sometimes prepare ourselves by running from the starting line at full speed, hearts racing, butterflies in our stomach, but at the same time we are afraid. We are hopeful, but we also experience despair. CRAVITY, through their debut album, share these different emotions in an effort to convey a message of hope to each other, and most importantly, to their fans.

Another standout track, “JUMPER,” which was produced by Joohoney of Monsta X, showcases the spirit of rookies who are freely exploring this new world, and are excited to meet their new fans. “I personally tried hard to highlight the strengths of the members while producing songs. It’s even more meaningful for me to be in charge of producing the members’ debut album” says Joohoney.

Jungmo, reflects on the debut of CRAVITY; “it still feels dreamy to me, but I truly want to show you how we will continue to improve ourselves nonstop. All of our members and I have a lot of dreams that we want to achieve, and we will make sure to do our best to accomplish those.” Wonjin added, “It is an honor to have the title “CRAVITY” in front of my name…”

All seven tracks displayed on this album build up emotions step by step as you listen in full, maintaining tension and increasing immersion throughout. From the rock-styling of “Top Of The Chain,” to the fusion of Pop, Hip-Hop, and Trap heard on “Blackout,” and closing out with the final R&B/Pop track “Star,” which tells the story of wishing to be the “star” that shines through the dark sky for their fans, and to each other.

Vocalist Seongmin leaves us with a final statement; “thank you to the members who led me and supported me, so I can stand here today. As CRAVITY, we can’t wait to show you our music and performances that we’ve prepared for a long time.”

Coronavirus and Alcohol: What Are People Drinking During the Outbreak?

Crazy times. Surreal. Uncertainty. These are some ways we describe the Coronavirus outbreak and the consequences. But what about…

What we’re drinking and how that has changed.

According to Seriouslysmoked.com, a cooking and BBQ website compiled more than 200,000 tweets from the last 30 days and analyzed their contents using keywords, phrases, and hashtags.

Their findings will surprise you.

Surge in Sales

Perhaps the scars of Prohibition still run deep. An overriding theme in the collected data was panic buying and stockpiling. The figures tell a dramatic story.

Alcohol sales ending the week of March 21 surged 55 percent.

Teasing those numbers reveals some shocking but not altogether unpredictable trends that SeriouslySmoked.com noted.

The volume of 1.75 liter-sized bottles sold increased dramatically.

Cheaper and more affordable brands saw significant upticks.

Half-bottles and luxury brands, not so much.

The latter makes sense given the uncertain economic situation. Many who didn’t have a liquor budget are probably reconsidering it now.

However, it’s essential to put these data in perspective. Many restaurants aren’t open for dine-in customers. The wine you’d enjoy with your steak entree, you’re now consuming at home. That’s evident when you look at the meteoric rise of online sales.

Wine.com, for example, saw a 200 percent increase during this same time.

What Else Are People Buying—or Not Buying?

SeriouslySmoked.com uncovered some other trends that the industry statistics support. Unlike in Europe, Americans reserve their sparklers for celebrations. The pandemic has hit that continent hard too.

Consequently, Champagne says have taken a nosedive.

However, it’s probably not too much of a stretch to guess that Champagne will recover just fine when we all start painting the town red when all of this is behind us.

Interestingly, alcohol products that have seen slow declines are now enjoying something of a comeback, such as port and other fortified spirits.

Tequila and gin have also seen sales spikes, but that’s not all. Canned and packaged beverages are enjoying a similar surge.

Canned wine, for example, wasn’t a serious thing in the beginning. Now, with the outbreak, think again. The situation is fueling sales that rival its rise in popularity over recent years.

Boxed wine?

Yup. And probably for many of the same reasons of economy and getting more for your buck.

What else has changed?

The Industry Reinvents Itself

The unprecedented events have spurred many forces in the industry to reinvent themselves in innovative ways…

Restaurants and bars are sharing cocktail recipes as acts of solidarity to get through the crisis. Some are holding virtual tastings. We’re having virtual happy hours out of our homes.

Individuals are also reaching out to their favorite wineries and joining wine clubs in droves.

That’s especially significant given that most tasting rooms are closed. Cancellations of wine tours continue to grow with an uncertain future. The looming collapse of the summer tourist season weighs heavily on countless wineries.

Napa Valley visitor traffic brings $2.23 billion to the economy, according to the 2018 Economic Impact Report.

Luckily, e-commerce sales are surging with direct-to-consumer purchases, as SeriouslySmoked.com discovered too. Early figures show that online traffic has exceeded pre-pandemic volumes in some cases.

So there is hope that the industry will recover. But then what will happen?

Lingering Questions

The fact remains that the road ahead is uncertain, but likely has lots of twists and turns along its path. The questions that the industry and consumers ponder loom large.

Will wineries, breweries, and distilleries recover?

Will restaurants and bars open their doors again?

What is the future of online sales and its impact on brick-and-mortar stores?

One thing is clear from the data collected by SeriouslySmoked.com. Everyone is living in the moment. It’s hard to plan because the situation literally changes every day.

There are also some good takeaway messages from the responses of consumers and the industry.

We are supporting each other in a myriad of ways. The prospect of our favorite watering hole closing or hole-in-the-wall restaurant forever has given us pause.

Sure, we’ve adapted. The industry will survive too. It just might look a bit different on the other side. In the meantime, enjoy that new tipple that you’ve discovered. And support your local businesses.
