Last night Halloween took over The Standard, High Line with the return of the long-loved Boom Boom Halloween Party. Capping off a trifecta of fetes in the iconic “Boom,” preceded by the now legendary Madonna Pride Party and the annual Met Gala After Party hosted by Kacey Musgraves, The Standard’s loyal tribe of creatives, designers, influencers, artists and friends returned to enjoy the cherished tradition once again in the usual parade of over-the-top costumes.

The night kicked off with music by the evening’s DJ, Mazurbate, who set the soundtrack for Boom in a dedication to New York City and the dying essence of glamour to bring back what he would imagine a modern Studio 54 would sound and feel like for one night while a stream of guests including musicians Lorde, Anitta and Ava Max, model Anok Yai, designers Prabal Gurung, Maisie Willen and Laquan Smith, Ru Paul’s Drag Race Season 10 and 11 Winners Aquaria and Yvie Oddly and Whitney Peak and all dressed in their Halloween’s best costumes and gathered on the dance floor to toast the return of the property’s famed party. 

In true Boom Boom Halloween fashion the party would not be complete without a twist and this year not one, but two surprise performances by 90’s superstars CeCe Peniston and Robin S made the night one to remember. Taking to the DJ booth, the artists performed live and graced the crowd with their iconic hit songs including Finally and We Got a Love Thang (CeCe Peniston) and Show Me Love (Robin S).

Looking for Halloween costumes can be difficult, especially when there are so many costumes and places to choose from! It’s hard to know where to look, especially since so many of the year’s most popular costumes require either a high knowledge of sewing or high a payment at a costume shop. Chances are you might be able to find a Bridgerton dress in your grandmother’s attic, but a Harley Quinn bat or a Cruella wig might be harder. So, I’ve examined a list of over twenty different online retailers to find the best places to buy from, considering price, quality, and selection. I’ve done my research and looked at all the biggest costumes for 2021, including Wanda Maximoff and Loki from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, to determine the best overall options. Your Wallet

Overall, Amazon and Party City have the lowest costs. Because of Amazon’s wide selection, you’re likely to find inexpensive stuff and a wide variety if you just do some digging. You may spend more at Party City, but shipping is from a store location and not an individual seller, so shipping in this case can be cheaper. If you don’t want to support either of those large businesses, you may be out of luck. Shopping on smaller online shops like Candy Apple may provide you with cheaper goods, but you’ll have to do a bit of digging and  might not get attire in the condition that you’re hoping for. Another solution is to consider thrifting your Halloween costume. While it is unlikely that you will find a brand new, full, cost-effective costume, thrifting can be a great way to find several pieces at a good price over time if you are planning on being a more modern character.

Your Specific Taste

Obsessed with dressing like a Squid Game character after your latest binge watch? Although the show just came out, there are already retailers who’ve designed the show’s iconic jumpsuits and mask for costumed purposes. Amazon again is the most reliable deliverer with its wide user base, having the full Squid Game outfit. But Walmart has a decent selection as well. Furthermore, I’ve found is the best place to buy black gloves for an Olivia Rodrigo “Good 4 u” inspired look. You can find some bizarre stuff on Etsy, including unique, well-made garments, jewelry, or period pieces. For sexy getups, check out Yandy. They have a hot and steamy selection for the holiday.

Your Need for the Best Quality

On every site, the caliber will differ, besides a few retail stores with online options (i.e. Party City, Spirit Halloween) where the worth will be consistent but not necessarily the best quality (particularly Party City). Again, Amazon takes the cake in terms of value just from the selection they have and the large number of reviews, proving them as a reliable option. Other stores can be a gamble as they tend to not have the best reviews, and pictures can only say so much.

Your Kids

One of my favorite stores for kids’ selection is Target, which offers different apparel for different age groups, making it easier for parents to know whether an outfit will fit their child. Target is a relatively cost-efficient option as well. For a bit pricier but higher quality option, the Disney store can also be a great fit for those wanting an Elsa dress/wig, or any other Disney or Marvel character for your little prince, princess, or hero!

Halloween is a wonderfully fun holiday and there are many great places to buy party garbs for spooky season. Amazon is probably still the most reliable and consistent due to their high volume of product movement, but there are many great places to check out for those who, understandably, don’t want to support Jeff Bezos. Fifteen Tips for an Effective Job Search

Job searching isn’t easy, but it doesn’t have to feel overwhelming, either. There are many factors to consider when you’re looking for your next position, but you can break them down into three basic stages: assess, research, and apply.

By working through these stages, you can significantly decrease stress and find your next job quickly. Let’s get started!

Stage 1: Assess

Before you update your LinkedIn account or start searching job boards, begin by deciding what qualities you’re looking for in a job.

Get out a journal and your colored pens, and work through the following brainstorming questions to set a solid foundation for yourself. You’ll use these notes to filter possible jobs later on in the research stage.

  1. Check Your Hours

Job hours vary widely. Consider the difference between a regular 9-to-5 and a job waiting tables or working retail. Ask yourself the following questions to decide what kind of job would work best for you:

  • How many hours a week do you want to work? Remember to consider other responsibilities, and don’t overload yourself if you can help it.
  • What kind of job hours have you worked before, and what did you like/dislike about them?
  • Do you prefer a regular, dependable schedule or schedules that vary week to week? 
  • Are you okay with overtime?
  1. Consider Pay

Next, think about compensation. Don’t shortchange yourself, but do be realistic about what companies offer, especially if this is your first job. To get a better sense of your paycheck goals, ask yourself these questions:

  • What are my living expenses month-to-month?
  • What are my savings goals?
  • What percentage of my paycheck will go to taxes (local, state, and federal)?
  • Do I have a buffer in case of emergencies?

While you’re thinking about pay, also consider company benefits:

  • Do you want a pension, 401(k), or a company savings plan?
  • What kind of health care package do you need?
  • How many days of paid time off would you like?
  1. Integrate Personal Goals

Think about how you’d like your job to connect with the rest of your life. Do you have personal goals that you can combine with work?

  • Do you want the option of a raise in the near future?
  • Do you want to go back to school eventually?
  • What personal growth goals do you have for yourself?
  • What positive benefits do you hope to receive from your job, other than financial pay?
  1. Determine Your Working Style

Learning about yourself and how you work best is a life-long process. Start with what you already know and consider what kind of job environment would best suit you. Below are some questions to help you get started:

  • How much oversight do you need to feel motivated?

Location is another essential factor to consider during the assessment stage. Many people move when they get a new job. However, in the last few years, remote work options have increased. Answer these questions next:

  • Does working remotely sound amazing to you?
  • Are you excited to work in an office?
  • Would you be willing to move for a job?
  • If so, where would you be excited to move?

Stage 2: Research

Great work! Now that you’ve considered your side of the working relationship, it’s time to look at your potential employers. Take a break, grab a coffee, and get started!

  1. Keep a Record

Before you start searching, make a spreadsheet to keep track of what you find. Add categories for company names, job roles, pay, benefits, hours, notes, and your current application status. 

Filling out this spreadsheet as you go will save you a lot of time and confusion later.

  1. Search Job Boards

Now that your spreadsheet is all set up, you’re ready to start searching! Here’s where your notes from earlier come in handy. Use the filters offered on the job sites below to streamline your searches based on personal preferences. This list of job sites is by no means exhaustive, but it’s an excellent place to start:

  • Handshake
  • LinkedIn
  • Monster Jobs
  • Glassdoor

  1. Talk to People

Don’t conduct all of your research over a computer screen. Talk to people you know and let them know you’re job searching. Many work opportunities come through word of mouth. Consider taking these additional steps to round out your research:

  • Message an employee over LinkedIn and ask for a phone call.
  • Schedule an in-person peer interview.
  • Talk to people you know who work for the company or work similar jobs.
  • Go to networking events and career fairs.

One thing that sometimes goes unsaid is to ask for help if your mental health is affecting your search. Finding gainful employment is essential, but it shouldn’t come at the cost of your well-being.

  1. Dig Deeper

To get a better picture of the companies you’re considering, check their websites. Google them and read employee reviews on sites like Glassdoor. Just remember that for every angry review you read, there may be 10 happy employees.

Stage 3: Apply

Now that your research is complete, you should have new connections and a spreadsheet filled with multiple job opportunities. Time for stage three: applying. Here’s how to move through the application process and get hired.

  1. Update Your LinkedIn Account

Four people are hired every minute through LinkedIn. Updating your LinkedIn profile makes it easy for recruiters to find you and gives them easy access to more information about you. Get professional headshots and update your LinkedIn profile before you start sending out applications.

  1. Revamp Your Resume

If you are applying to high-competition positions with many applicants, your resume may be read by a machine rather than a person. So, while it may be tempting to make your resume look stylish and artsy, it’s better for you to make it scannable. Use clear sections, a simple font, and dark headlines.

Avoid images and incorporate your LinkedIn account into your contact information instead. Tailor each resume you send out to fit the company role you hope to fill.

  1. Write Cover Letters

Personalize your application further by also including a cover letter. There you can share what you can bring to each company and why you’re excited to work with them.

Make it clear that you’ve researched their company and that you align with their values. Be clear and personable, and end with a thank you.

  1. Apply In-Person

If you can, deliver your resume and cover letter in-person. Making personal contact with your future employer makes it far more likely that they’ll hire you.

Hiring is a time-consuming and challenging process – it’s not fun for companies, either! Give relief to the hiring manager by making yourself an easy choice for the position.

  1. Pass the Interview

Interviews don’t have to be stressful. Remember: an interview is your chance to get to know a company just as much as it’s their chance to talk to you. Ask questions, listen, and be genuine.

Working with a company is a partnership, and an interview helps both parties know if it will be a long-lasting and successful one. Do your research and connect genuinely with your interviewers.

  1. Follow Up

After applications and interviews, send follow-up emails. This extra bit of human contact shows companies you care and reminds them of your name. You know that you’d be a fantastic employee – show them that by using your excellent people skills.

Be creative and take every opportunity to show companies that you’re personable, motivated, and genuine. Hopefully, you’ll hear back from several potential employers soon.

Finding Balance by Modulating the Immune System

Recent world events have caused a healthy immune system to be on everyone’s mind.  One of the big revelations to most people over the last few months is just how important our overall health and lifestyle are for our immune system.  It’s especially important for people who are overweight or have an existing medical condition, because these conditions can significantly compromise immune responses.

One of the biggest things that can work against us when it comes to mounting a strong immune defense is increased inflammation. When your immune system is working to kill a bacteria or a virus – the immune cells themselves creates inflammatory substances.  That’s part of how they fight the bugs.  If your body is already inflamed (due to unhealthy diet, being overweight or having a condition like heart disease or diabetes), the additional inflammation from the immune cells can create problems.  Anything that causes inflammation hurts our immune response and anything that prevents or fights inflammation helps it.  

This is why things like managing our weight, eating a healthy diet, getting regular physical activity and adequate sleep are so important.  Good stress management is also important for a good immune response to cold and flu bugs, and it is an often-overlooked factor.  Many of us struggle to accomplish healthier diets and overall lifestyles, and this is where supplemental support can help.  There are also some precautions to be aware of not only with supplementation, but with lifestyle as well.

Nutrients to Support Immunity

There are nutrients that are safe to take on an ongoing basis to support your immune system function.  Vitamin C helps the body make white blood cells as needed.  Quercetin is a polyphenol derived from plants that has good anti-inflammatory activity. So, it supports healthy immunity by helping to control silent internal inflammation. Zinc is a trace mineral that is needed to make all immune cells: antibodies, T cells and natural killer cells.  Daily recommended intake of zinc is 8 mg for women, and 11 mg/day for men, but we can take dramatically increased dosages when we are fighting a cold or flu (up to 200 mg per day.)  However, it is important to go back to the daily-recommended intake once you are better because over-intake of zinc can cause micronutrient imbalances and very high dosages can actually have an inhibitory effect on the immune system.  So this is one of the cautions.

Vitamin D is another key nutrient to make sure you are getting enough of for a healthy and balanced immune system.  I’ll discuss more on its role in immunity later.  Vitamin D levels in the range of 30 – 50 ng/mL is considered an adequate level.   

Immune Boosters

There are some ingredients that directly stimulate increased immune cell production.  A well-known one is the herb echinacea.  Echinacea has long been used to help people get over colds and flu bugs. It is most helpful when taken at the first sign of a cold or flu. However, you should only use echinacea when you are actively fighting a bug, because over stimulating an immune response by taking immune boosters daily can end up fighting against the immune system over time.  Also, echinacea is part of the daisy family, so anyone with hay fever or ragweed allergies should not use echinacea. 

Imbalanced Immunity

This brings me to an often-overlooked but very important topic for a vigilant immune response to cold and flu bugs – immune modulation.  Many people have conditions that create an imbalanced immune system, which is made up of two main sides:  TH1 and TH2 immunity.  TH1, also known as innate immunity, is the side that fights bacteria, viruses, damaged cells and cancer cells.  You need to be able to upregulate TH1 immunity quickly when you are exposed to a cold or flu bug.  TH2, also known as acquired immunity, is the side that makes antibodies and causes allergic responses to food and environmental allergens like dust and pollen.  This side gets upregulated in people who have allergies and some autoimmune conditions.  It can also get upregulated in response to chronic stress, even ongoing physical stress such as occurs in overtraining.  Overtraining is most common in professional or amateur athletes, but can occur in anyone who exercises too much, i.e. 2 – 4 hours a day.  So this is my lifestyle caution.  Be careful not to over-exercise.  Signs of overtraining are noticing you take longer to recover from exercise, difficulty sleeping at night and getting sick more often. While it is important to get regular physical activity – moderate activity is best. Try to get at least 30 minutes of activity five days a week and work your way up to an hour, five days a week.  

One of the most important supplements I teach about and recommend in my practice is Moducare. Studies show it helps restore balance to between TH2 and TH1 immunity, and by helping to down regulate overactive TH2 immunity, the TH1 side improves so you are ready for colds and flu when you are exposed.  So it is one of the best supplements for people to take when they have allergies or autoimmunity. I also recommend it for people who have chronic stress, because chronic stress elevates cortisol, and cortisol suppresses immunity. This is why it is common to come down with a cold or flu when you have been under a lot of stress.  It is also why people who have been under stress for years are at increased risk for getting cancer.

Moducare is a blend of plant-based compounds known as plant sterols and sterolins, combined in a very specific 100:1 ratio. Research has shown that the blend of sterols and sterolins in this specific ratio exhibit the best immune balancing activity.  One study showed that marathon runners who took Moducare did not get the same immune deficits or cortisol spikes as people who did not take it, resulting in less post event upper respiratory infections for those runners taking Moducare.  Because Moducare controls overactive TH2 immunity, this also results in decreased inflammation. Vitamin D is also an immune modulator and this is why it is also a great nutrient for immune support.

One final note – because chronic stress has such a profound impact on immune function, anyone dealing with high stress levels should consider using supplements like rhodiola extract, which is known to help reduce elevated cortisol, as well as Moducare for more direct immune support.

Immune support is probably more involved than you realized, but there is a lot we can do to be smarter in the steps we take.  Not only do we need daily good health practices, we can supplement with nutrients and specialized ingredients to support the maintenance of immune cells and immune system balance, and it may well be the single most important thing you can do for your healthy longevity. In turn, when your immune system gets out of balance, it can affect inflammation, mood, and your overall energy, so knowing how to take of our immune system truly can have a positive impact on your daily life.  It truly pays to be smart about taking care of ourselves with an eye on our immune system.
