Nashville’s Museum of African American Music

Culture Editor Tom Wilmer visits the National Museum of African American Music located in the heart of downtown Nashville, Tennessee.

Nashville’s new National Museum of African American Music’s mission is to showcase the central role African Americans have played in weaving the fabric of America’s soundtrack.

Nashville is a fitting home for the only museum in America with a surgical dedication to showcase the impact that African American music has had on the fabric of the country’s culture. Numerous African American musicians – including Jimi Hendrix, Ray Charles, the Fist Jubilee Singers and Little Richard, fine-tuned their early career trajectories while performing at various Nashville music venues.

Distinctive areas throughout the museum offer thematic presentations such as One Nation Under a Groove-featuring the story of R&B in post WWII America while the Rivers of Rhythm Pathway is graced with captivating interactive panels keyed to an animated timeline that links the evolution of Southern religious, blues and contemporary R&B and hip-hop genres.

Digging deep in to the evolution of the African American religious experience, Wade in the Water displays the evolution of religious music—from indigenous African music that survived through throughout slavery and evolved via African American spirituals and hymns with a pinnacle during the 1940s to 1960s “Golden Age of Gospel”.

The museum does a deft job connecting the dots to show how the influential gospel vocal groups influenced doo-wop, R&B and soul music.

In addition to dynamic multi-media displays, the venue offers a state-of-the-art performance hall to screen films, lectures and live stage concerts by local and international musicians.

This is just a sampler of the numerous captivating interactive displays that you will experience at the museum. And the NAAM Museum is conveniently located smack in the heart of Nashville, literally just steps away from the Ryman Auditorium and the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Top International Undrafted NBA Players

The top 3 international undrafted players playing in the NBA today

Typically, teams in the league would use the Summer League to evaluate drafted or undrafted talent to make roster decisions. With the pandemic, the franchises were not given that opportunity.

Even with the chances to watch those games, some teams strike out on undrafted prospects and allow other teams to swoop in and make a deal. That’s why you never seed betting sites, like BetMGM Indiana, set odds on undrafted players signing with teams. There have been some pretty solid undrafted international prospects in today’s league that have come to the NBA and made a difference in the league. These are currently the top three.

Tacko Fall-Boston Celtics (Honorable-Mention)

Fall enjoyed a four-year college career at the University of Central Florida; however, he didn’t move to the United States from Senegal until he was 16 years old. The 7-foot-6 big man is a recent member of the All-Defensive Team for the G-League after being undrafted in 2019. Fall has only played seven games in his NBA career, but he is still learning.

Joe Ingles – Utah Jazz

When it comes to international awards, the Australian has racked up quite a few. He is a former EuroLeague champion (2014), Israeli League champion (2014), two-time Spanish League champion (2011, 2012), and Catalan League champion (2012). In 2009, he started his trophy case by winning the NBL with the South Dragons.

Today, Ingles is a key contributor for the Utah Jazz, the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference. Ingles is shooting over 44% from the three-point range and averaging 11.7 points per game. After playing five games with the Los Angeles Clippers in 2014, he was shipped to the Jazz, where he has spent his entire career up to now.

Maxi Kleber-Dallas Mavericks

Kleber entered the 2014 NBA draft after spending three seasons playing professional ball in Germany. He went undrafted and then spent the next three seasons playing for German and Spanish Clubs. In 2015 and 2017, he was a German League All-Star, which led to him joining the Dallas Mavericks in 2017.

Kleber’s breakout season came last year, where he averaged 9.1 points, 5.2 rebounds, and shot 37.3% from the three-point range. He has gone back and forth starting for the Mavericks this season. This year, he is spotting an impressive 47.5% clip from the three-point range.

Chris Boucher-Toronto Raptors

Boucher hails from Canada and is having a breakout campaign with the Raptors. Boucher has spent the last three seasons with the Raptors after starting his career with the Golden State Warriors in 2017. Currently, he is averaging 13.2 points per game and 6.8 rebounds.

He was a member of the Warriors championship team in 2018 and then won a title as a reserve in 2019 with the Raptors. In 2019, he was the G-League MVP. In what has been an early career, he has accomplished more than some veterans have ever achieved.

Lilian Jackman Offers Gardening Advice in Dr. Hauschka Livestream

By: Skyler Johnson

There are many reasons to garden, but sometimes it can be so hard to keep your plants alive. They’ll often die before you can enjoy your harvest. Dr. Hauschka, a skincare brand, recently did a livestream with gardener Lilian Jackman, founder and owner of Wilder Hill Gardens, in Conway, Massachusetts. She gave the following advice:

Don’t Overwater

One of the easiest ways to kill plants is to overwater them. People tend to think that their herbs and vegetables need as much water as they can get but that’s not true. Plants, like other creatures, have a limit to how much water they need. Jackman recommended only watering when the ground is dry. That way, you know they’re getting the perfect amount of water they need without getting too much.

Bring Plants Inside for the Winter

It’s important to bring some plants inside for winter, as they will be able to stay alive in the proper conditions. She encourages people to keep plants in pots for easy transport during the winter. She also recommended getting full-spectrum UV bulbs, as they will help to give plants the light they need, and will also be visually appealing. As far as what plants should go inside, you have to know which environment they came from. She uses the example of rosemary: a Mediterranean plant. Because rosemary is Mediterranean, you should store it in an environment most similar to that environment – which for her, in Massachusetts, meant indoors.

Think Like a Plant

Plants will communicate a lot with you, if you can understand them. If you’re giving plants too much water, they will droop. Observing the “behavior” of your plants can go a long way in determining how successful your garden will be.

Add Diversity

Jackman recommends using three to four plants per pot – each of different sizes, styles, and characteristics. Different plants require different nutrients, and with more plant variety, more nutrients will be utilized. Also, variety makes your pot or planter more visually stimulating.

Enjoy the Fruit of your Labor

One thing Jackman really stressed was utilizing the plants in your diet. If you have vegetables, pick and enjoy them. If you have herbs, use them in your food. It’s important to appreciate every aspect of the gardening process, especially the end results.

Fun and Fantasy for All for Seven Weekends, Plus Labor Day, Starting Aug. 21

The enchantment of the New York Renaissance Faire returns! For seven weekends (plus Labor Day), from Aug. 21 thru Oct. 3, fantasy and escapism will reign throughout a bustling 16th-century English village and surrounding shire at Sterling Forest in Tuxedo, N.Y.

“Welcome back to the wonder, adventure and fun for all ages that is the New York Renaissance Faire!” said Orange County Tourism Director Amanda Dana. “Not only does the fair take visitors to a long-ago realm where fantasy rules, but the seven magical weekends contribute significantly to the visitor economy of both Orange County and the Hudson Valley. This is a highlight of the year that draws visitors to our beautiful county from near and far for enjoyment on an epic scale. It’s enough to make us all shout, ‘Huzzah!’”

Mingle with knights, fairies, minstrels and merchants. Thrill to a jousting tournament, acrobatics, swordplay, music and more. Feast on savory treats and sweets, laugh or gasp in awe (or both!) at breathtaking performances. Shop at the marketplace featuring over 100 artisans, with demonstrations including glassblowing and candle making.

In 2018, the fair was named the best Renaissance Faire in the region for the third year in a row. Last year it was voluntarily cancelled because of COVID-19. This year it returns with measures to keep guests, performers and staff safe by following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines. As of now, guests who are vaccinated need not wear face masks, but social distancing is encouraged for all. Some experiences may be modified to reduce physical contact. (Please check HERE before visiting for any updates on COVID-19-related guidelines and requirements.)

“Our team is working hard to literally set the stages for world-class, immersive entertainment that will put a smile on your face as we recognize that what we do best is needed now more than ever,” said Linda McFeters, Owner and Producer of the New York Renaissance Faire. “We are working closely with the local health department and the most current CDC recommendations to ensure the safety of our guests, vendors, volunteers and staff.”

Here’s what you’ll find at the fair:

Food: Feast on a roasted turkey leg, a boar platter or a worldwide variety of treats – pho, mac and cheese, burritos and more – including many vegetarian and gluten-free options. Sample craft brews, cider and mead – a honey-based wine – along with soft drinks.

Entertainment: Acrobats, actors, musicians and more will dazzle you with performances to make you laugh one moment, gasp in awe the next. Enjoy music, magic, comedy and excitement including an action-packed live chess match and a climactic jousting competition in the Shire’s tiltyard. (Most, but not all, entertainers perform every weekend. Check the entertainment schedule HERE.)

Shopping: Wander the streets of an Elizabethan English village and peruse more than 100 artisan shops offering handmade wares of metalsmiths, clothes makers, leather goods, jewelry and more. Marvel at demonstrations in glassblowing, leatherworking, blacksmithing, candle making and pottery throwing.

Especially for Kids: “Kids’ Quest” invites the Shire’s younger visitors to join an interactive adventure helping the Fairy Folk in the Enchanted Forest rediscover their magic. The “Boffer Wars” teaches swordplay skills (with all-foam swords) to young heroes-in-training.

For a twist on the festivities, visit on one of the themed weekends:

  • Time Travelers’ Weekend, Sept. 11 and 12. Come dressed from your favorite time period (even a future era of your imagining.)
  • Pirate Weekend, Sept. 18 and 19. A celebration for all ye scallywags to meeting buccaneers and sailors of all sorts, sing sea shanties and practice your pirate talk. Yar!

Thrice – Robot Soft Exorcism

THRICE RELEASE NEW SINGLE ROBOT SOFT EXORCISM

LISTEN NOW

NEW ALBUM HORIZONS/EAST OUT SEPTEMBER 17 VIA EPITAPH RECORDS

PRE-ORDER NOW

California rock band Thrice have shared their newest single Robot Soft Exorcism off their upcoming album, Horizons/East. The song grows and lures listeners in with a unique robotic beat that almost seems to be breathing, creating a living rhythm. The track’s title may sound familiar to those who are aware of David Dark. The American author and teacher coined the term in a twitter thread, exploring a metaphor in an attempt to help us distinguish between harmful and destructive systems and those that inhabit and benefit from them. Thrice’s singer and lyricist Dustin Kensrue picks up the image and breathes life into it throughout the newly released track. Months back Kensrue and Dark spoke at length on the subject, as well as other topics, on Kensrue’s podcast. Fans can listen to Robot Soft Exorcism now at their website.

Horizons/East is available for pre-order now and will be released September 17 digitally and October 8 physically via Epitaph Records. The album exemplifies art as a work of recognition, the human task of perceiving oneself amid details, disasters, and blessings as a relentlessly relational phenomenon among others. In this, Horizons/East is the rare rock album on which interrelatedness is a theme, painting an adventurous and lush landscape mixed by Scott Evans that the band self-produced and recorded at their own New Grass Studio.

The album’s lead single, Scavengers and its accompanying music video are available to watch now. Over a dark and intricate braiding of guitar and drum grooves, the video transports viewers to a world of mystery and disguises that leaves viewers unsure of whom to trust and where to turn.

With the new album, the band addresses, with candor and courage, the fragile and awkward arrangements that pass for civilization, while inviting us to dwell more knowingly within our own lives. Without surrendering any of the energy and hard edge of their previous albums, they’ve given us a profoundly meditative work, which serves as a musical summons to everyday attentiveness.

Horizons/East conveys a palpable sense of danger, determination, and possibility.

Formed in 1998, the Orange County-based four-piece is widely regarded as one of the most innovative rock bands of their generation. Featuring frontman Dustin Kensrue, guitarist Teppei Teranishi, bassist Eddie Breckenridge, and drummer Riley Breckenridge.

Thrice will be touring this fall with special guests Touch, Amor, Jim Ward appearing at select dates only), and Self Defense Family. Tickets and tour information available here.

For updates on Thrice please visit Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Spotify.

About The Game

The Game is everywhere. From the streets of Compton to the top of the charts and the forefront of the culture, he’s the rare rapper who can collaborate with Ed Sheeran and Travis Barker, pop out on Kevin Hart’s Instagram, and appear in All Star Weekend directed by Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx all within the same news cycle. From breaking records, piling up billions of streams, setting social media on fire with every post, and holding down the place he calls home, it’s become nearly impossible to escape the influence of the two-time GRAMMY Award-nominated multiplatinum rapper, songwriter, producer, actor, and entrepreneur born Jayceon Terrell Taylor. At the same time, his rapping may very well be sharper than ever.

During 2019, The Game reached rarified air with Born 2 Rap, registering a career-high score of 82% on Metacritic. NME raved, Born 2 Rap isn’t just a library of classic records blended together; it’s a lesson in storytelling, and Forbes assured, Both he and his fans have something that they can be proud of for years to come. AUTOMOTIVE GROUP FIGHTS AGAINST BREAST CANCER

Two Automotive Executives Become Co-Chairs of the 2021 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer® Event in Broward

For the Craig Zinn Automotive Group, joining the fight against breast cancer hits close to home. That’s why two top executives from that organization have stepped up to co-chair this year’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Broward presented by Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino – Hollywood, scheduled for October 23, 2021. Fleet manager for Lexus of Pembroke Pines, Michele Alter, is a 21-year breast cancer survivor, and Brittany Zinn, assistant group general manager/CZAG, lost a maternal figure to breast cancer. The two plan to work closely with Trudy Spence, senior development manager at the American Cancer Society® Fort Lauderdale to make this year’s event a success.

The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer® (MSABC) is a national movement. Fundraising events range from large-scale traditional walks to unique local experiences and celebrations. Making Strides has united communities, companies and individuals across the country in the fight to end breast cancer for more than two decades. The organization has known of Michele and her fight since 2002, when she first started participating in their events. Both Michele Alter and Brittany Zinn believe in MSABC’s commitment to create a future that’s free from breast cancer. “As we look to the road ahead, we are more determined and more inspired than ever before. It will unite Broward County communities to honor cancer survivors and caregivers touched by the disease and raise awareness and funds for a world without breast cancer,” said Trudy Spence. In years past, this event has raised over 700,000 dollars, which went towards funding breast cancer research and programs geared towards both men and women. At this time, the event will move forward in person, but it will keep federal, state, and local health guidelines in mind. As the fall season approaches, event-based decisions may be made to best meet the health and safety needs of everyone involved. Michele and Brittany hope to get as many people signed up to help raise funds. “Between now through October, people can fuel the fight against breast cancer by fundraising. It’s as easy as downloading the American Cancer Society FUNdraising App, which will allow you to register for the October event and ask for donations via email, text and social media,” said Michele Alter who was first diagnosed with breast cancer at the young age of 32.

For many, being diagnosed is a life changing experience, and Michele believes that cancer lit a fire in her soul. Early during her treatment, she decided that she would not only beat cancer, but she would also volunteer and help The American Cancer Society fund a cure. “They were there for me when I needed them the most, so I feel blessed that I am here today ready and able to co-chair this year’s Making Strides/ Broward event.” Michele believes in the programs, because they were the only thing that helped her see the light during those moments of darkness. Brittany comes from an automotive family that happens to also be highly philanthropic. Her father, Craig Zinn, encourages everyone in his company to give back to the community. Despite wearing many hats, Brittany was eager to serve as co-chair for this year’s event to honor the memory of Ingrid, who was like a mother to her. “I’ve seen what breast cancer does to a person. Since I was young, Ingrid kept the true depth of her struggles from me. Had I known, I would have been there for her, much like The American Cancer Society was for Michele,” said Brittany.

According to the American Cancer Society journal, a Cancer Journal for Clinicians, there will be an estimated 1.9 million new cancer cases diagnosed in 2021 and 608,570 cancer deaths in the United States. Given the pandemic, it’s believed that people with active cancer may be more susceptible to COVID-19, because of their impaired immune system. For that, the Broward chapter wants to ensure everyone that even if they cannot attend in person, the success of this event will depend on enthusiastic individuals who commit to raising funds, in addition to generous donors who will support those participants.
