Polestar Cars Finds Majority of US Drivers Don’t Purchase Electric Vehicles for Environmental Reasons

  • New survey reveals 55% US drivers purchase an electric car for reasons other than environmental benefits
  • Almost half of respondents are open to buying an electric car from a new brand, many more than with a gasoline powered vehicle
  • Generational differences affect rationale for electric car purchase

Polestar, the Swedish premium electric performance car brand, has conducted research that has found that 55 percent of US drivers purchase electric cars for reasons other than environmental benefits. In-vehicle technology, seamless connectivity and infotainment system offerings have been named as the most important decisions for consumers switching to an electric car from an internal-combustion vehicle.

“The idea of luxury being defined by what’s ‘under the hood’ has been replaced in the electric era with the prioritization of seamless connectivity, integration into existing digital ecosystems, and good UX design,” said Gregor Hembrough, Head of Polestar North America. “People are switching to electric cars for more than just environmental reasons, and Polestar’s focus on in-vehicle technology means they can have everything they want in an environmentally friendly package.”

Polestar 2 was the first vehicle to market with the revolutionary Google-developed infotainment system. The system features Google built-in, including industry-leading voice control via Google Assistant. This enables control of functions using natural voice commands, including navigation through Google Maps, the climate system, music, phone and more.

Brand image also makes a difference to consumers based on age demographics. Fifty-seven percent of millennials (ages 25 to 40) are confident in new electric car brands compared to only 28 percent of Baby Boomers (ages 57 to 75). Nearly half (46 percent) of all respondents are more open to new brands and start-ups such as Polestar when it comes to purchasing an electric car.

Despite eco-consciousness not necessarily being a driving factor for over half of respondents, younger drivers are also much more concerned with appearing environmentally conscious compared to their older counterparts. For Gen Z respondents (ages 18-24), image is a big factor, with 12 percent saying it would be the most important consideration when choosing an electric car compared to an internal-combustion vehicle. That is twice as many as Millennials (ages 25-41), and more than three times as many as Baby Boomers ages (57-74).

To obtain this data, Polestar commissioned a third-party survey, fielded earlier this year with more than 5,000 electric and internal combustion drivers across all 50 US states. The survey questioned drivers on the state of electric car acceptance, charging infrastructure, and the perception of electric car brands when purchasing a vehicle.

POLESTAR CONTINUES TO GROW

Polestar, the Swedish electric performance car brand, continues to deliver on its growth promise as it progresses towards a planned listing on the Nasdaq through a proposed business combination with Gores Guggenheim, Inc. (Nasdaq: GGPI, GGPIW, and GGPIU), expected to close at the end of June 2022.

Expansion into new markets and a growing retail footprint are both driving and supporting customer demand, while the development of new models is set to propel the brand further into high-margin premium SUV segments.

Polestar launched its 25th global market in the first half of 2022, a significant increase from 10 markets in 2020. Polestar has added six new markets since the start of 2022, including UAE, Kuwait, Hong Kong, Ireland, Spain and Portugal. The company also plans to launch in Israel and Italy in the second half of 2022, adding to its Middle East and European footprint. By the end of 2023, Polestar plans to be present in an aggregate of at least 30 markets globally, while continuing to evaluate new market opportunities for the future.

Product expansion also continues with the Polestar 3 electric performance SUV, scheduled for its world premiere in October 2022. Polestar 3 marks the company’s first product for the attractive, high-growth SUV market. This will be followed by the Polestar 4 electric SUV coupe, and the Polestar 5 electric 4-door GT.

Polestar 4 is expected to be launched in 2023 and enters one of the most competitive market segments in terms of demand, performance and design.

Polestar 5 is also in advanced stages of development and planned to be launched in 2024. A prototype will be shown in public for the first time at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed from 23 to 26 June 2022.

Mike Whittington, Head of Global Sales at Polestar, adds: “It’s exciting for the whole team to experience this growing momentum in our business. Our order intake is at record levels and currently represents an annualized run-rate of over 75,000 vehicles, putting us in a strong position as the production landscape normalizes. In addition, with both Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 on the horizon, we are set to play a leading role in the electrification of lucrative and sizeable premium SUV segments. With a 2025 production capacity for these two EVs expected above 160,000 vehicles per year, we will have the ability to scale quickly and attract new customers to the brand.”

Polestar now has close to 130 retail locations open around the globe and expects to have 160 locations open by the end of 2022. More Polestar Spaces and Destinations are planned in existing and new markets, in cities including London, Madrid, Tel Aviv, Reykjavík, Vancouver, Austin, Shenzhen, and others.

POLESTAR RINGS IN NASDAQ

Polestar, the Swedish electric car brand, has rung the famous bell at the Nasdaq stock exchange in New York City to celebrate its public listing. Polestar began trading officially under the ticker “PSNY” on 24 June 2022.

Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath was joined by members of the Polestar and Gores Guggenheim teams, gathering in New York City to mark the latest milestone in Polestar’s journey towards sustainable mobility.

“This is such a proud day, and ringing the bell at Nasdaq is a symbolic celebration. Today truly marks the beginning of the next chapter in the story of Polestar. We have a clear vision of what that story will be, and the listing gives us the platform to accelerate and push harder for a transition towards more sustainable mobility,” says Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO.

The bellringing was amplified on Nasdaq’s digital billboard screens in Times Square, which flashed images of some of Polestar’s over 2,000 global employees and the company’s vision statement. PSNY-branded Polestar 2 cars were also on display in the famous city square.

Polestar offices and retail locations across its 25 active markets were connected and watched the event live, celebrating locally.

The public listing will help Polestar build its ambitious plans for growth in some of the most attractive global E.V. segments while driving forward its industry-leading sustainability goals, including an utterly climate-neutral car by 2030.

Polestar has significant momentum as it enters a period of rapid growth and builds a diversified product portfolio, launching three new premium electric cars, including two SUVs, by 2024. The first, Polestar 3, a full-size electric SUV, is expected to launch in October 2022 and will set a new standard in this high-margin, premium segment.

Polestar Electric Fastback Upgrades

Polestar cars recently announced design updates, range estimates and pricing for the 2023 Polestar 2 all-electric fastback. Pricing for the updated Polestar 2 Long range Single motor will start at $53,950, or $48,950.

Thanks to software improvements, Polestar anticipates a vehicle range increase for the dual-motor Polestar 2 of approximately 11 miles compared to the current model, expected to reach a preliminary estimated 260-mile US EPA range.

Additionally, the updated model adds a number of new features in a nod to the Polestar design ethos of continual improvement.

Equipment upgrades to the award-winning Polestar 2 include an upgraded heat pump designed for better cold-weather performance, new design options across the interior and exterior of the car, and a more advanced air quality sensor.

The most notable tech improvement is a software update to the mechanical heat pump, which is available as part of the Plus Pack. Thanks to the software changes, the heat pump is designed to now deliver range improvements in a wider range of temperatures, from 20 degrees Fahrenheit (-7degrees Celsius) to 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius). Within that temperature range, the heat pump helps increase real-world driving range by approximately 10% beyond that of the standard model. A future Over-the-Air (OTA) update will upgrade existing Polestar 2 cars equipped with the heat pump, free of charge.

New design touches for 2023 are two exterior colors and one new interior option, inspired by the Polestar 1 electric performance hybrid. Outside, Polestar 2 adopts the same “Space” metallic black color previously offered on the Polestar 1, and a new “Jupiter” metallic shade. “Magnesium” is now the standard, cost-free exterior color. Both the standard 19-inch and optional 20-inch wheels have striking new designs.

Inside, a newly ventilated Nappa leather option is available in a light grey “Zinc” color, which is paired with new Light Ash wood trim. The leather is sourced from a new supplier, Bridge of Weir, known for their sustainability and animal welfare credentials, and a quality grade only found elsewhere in bespoke luxury and supercar cabins. Thanks to strong customer demand, Polestar has also developed a removable mesh sunshade for vehicles with the panoramic glass roof. Cars fitted with the Plus Pack now include an advanced cabin air filter helping improve cabin air, and new air quality sensor and app will allow drivers to see a breakdown of the air circulating outside of the vehicle, including pollen types. This includes a list-type visualization on the vehicle center screen.

Additional to the Performance Pack for 2023 is a performance software upgrade. The upgrade adds 68 horsepower and 15 lb-ft of torque to the car. The Performance Pack is only available for dual-motor variant. The software will also be available to purchase as a separate software upgrade–for both existing and future dual-motorcars, with and without the Performance Pack. More information regarding timing and pricing will be announced later this year.

With deliveries beginning in September, the single-motor 2023 Polestar 2 Long range Single motor is priced at $53,950 before any federal, provincial, territorial, or utility rebates. The 2023 Polestar 2 Long range Dual motor is priced from $58,950. Both variants qualify for the $5,000 federal electric rebate, as well as numerous provincial and territorial incentives, such as $8,000 in Quebec and $3,000 in British Columbia.

The latest changes build on the regular enhancements that are sent via Over-the-Air (OTA) updates to all Polestar 2 owners. Many major updates have already been sent OTA to vehicles, delivering around 100 upgrades such as increased range, satellite radio, an eco climate setting and charging improvements.

Polestar Precept

Today, Polestar Manhattan invited us to preview their Precept, exhibiting design, technology and sustainability.

“America’s newest MVP of the EV game, breaking records and necks!” – 360

Polestar revealed the Precept in February 2020 as a declaration of intent. Showcasing the future direction of Polestar’s design, sustainability and technology, the concept makes a strong statement about the brand’s intent. In October 2020, Polestar confirmed that the Precept will be put into production in the future. Polestar is documenting this journey in a YouTube series, “Precept: from concept to car.” In November 2021, Polestar confirmed that the production version of Precept will be known as Polestar 5.

Polestar continues to believe in collaborating with experts to accelerate development and provide customers with the best available technologies. Precept’s interior is defined by sustainability and offered an opportunity to work with new materials and processes. Similarly, the evolution of the HMI builds on current partnerships which maximise the integration of expertise.

Sustainable new interior materials balance modern high-tech luxury with reduced environmental impact. These sustainable materials include recycled PET bottles, reclaimed fishing nets and recycled cork vinyl. A flax-based composite developed by external partner Bcomp Ltd is featured in many interior and some exterior parts. Polestar’s ambition is to bring much of this sustainability into production.

The next generation HMI, powered by Android, builds on Polestar’s close collaboration with Google. An enlarged, portrait-oriented 15-inch centre touch screen complements a 12.5-inch driver display, and the two are linked by an illuminated blade that encompasses the entire interior. In this execution, the unique Polestar emblem floats holographically inside a solid piece of Swedish crystal between the rear seat headrests.

Supporting the advancement of a personalised and dynamic digital interface, the instrument panel also hosts an array of smart sensors. Eye tracking will allow the car to monitor the driver’s gaze and adjust the content of the various screens accordingly. Proximity sensors also enhance the usability of the centre display when driving.

The sculpted form of the Polestar Precept sets the tone for future Polestar vehicles. The vehicle’s proportions define its presence with restrained surfacing and a focus on aerodynamic efficiency.

The front grille is replaced by the Polestar SmartZone, representing a shift from breathing to seeing. An area which once channelled air to radiators and the internal combustion engine now houses technology for safety sensors and driver assistance functions. Purposefully gathered behind a transparent panel dedicated to intelligent hardware are two radar sensors and a high definition camera. The LiDAR pod, mounted atop the glass roof, is given optimal visibility as a next step towards increased driving assistance. The Thor’s Hammer LED headlight signature evolves with separated elements, taking on a dynamic, more robotic and brand-defining interpretation.

Precept features an integrated front wing above the SmartZone which accelerates air flow over the long bonnet. This allows air to attach itself to the surface earlier, which improves aerodynamic efficiency and thus improves the vehicle’s range. At the rear, the wide light-blade spans the entire width of the car, extending into vertical aero-wings – another aerodynamic feature and a nod to light-weight design.

With product development now underway, Polestar has confirmed it will produce Precept in China, where a new production facility will be established. The aim is to ensure the facility will be climate neutral and one of the most intelligent and connected automotive production facilities in the world.

2023 TOYOTA bZ4X

While consumers become increasingly knowledgeable of the functionality and basics of Hybrid vehicles, their desires and curiosity will follow. As of late, Toyota assembled the opportunity to experience this new generation of automotive at their media conference E-volution 2.0 – increasing awareness and designed to dispel myths and the benefits, in efforts to declare the battery initiative as the rule and not the exception. In tail, igniting the shared responsibility to a carbon neutral future of driving. 

Many of us are cognizant of global warming and the dangers that it precedes, such as severe weather and acidic oceans. This has resulted in rainforests burning and quickened extinctions of wildlife. While people might not be able to completely give up cars for travel, the Toyota team has provided greener options as electric cars already have a smaller carbon footprint than gasoline vehicles. Read about how electric vehicles help tackle climate change

Last week, Toyota invited 360 MAGAZINE to the unveiling of the all-electric bZ4X at the ALil A Marea Beach Resort in San Diego, California. As a leader in electrification, the introduction of bZ4X represents the first of a global series of battery-electric vehicles to be introduced under the global “Toyota bZ” DNA. bZ4X will have a manufacturer-estimated range of up to 250 miles for XLE front-wheel drive models, which is almost enough to transport you from LA to Vegas. Moreover, FWD offers ample traction on the road while decreasing production costs. What’s exciting is there is also the choice for a dual electric motor for AWD. 

“With zero emissions and an exhilarating drive, the bZ4X is hitting the market at just the right time as we expand our already comprehensive electrified product lineup,” said Veep of Toyota Marketing, Mike Tripp. He continues, “As a human-centered company, Toyota remains committed to offering customers a diverse portfolio of products to meet their individual needs and move us toward a carbon neutral future.”

Design

The SUV was developed in partnership with Subaru. Thus, it’s a doppelganger of the Solterra crossover – sleek, modern and bold. The 20-inch wheels include a familiar clean design. The aerodynamically designed front exudes sex appeal featuring a hammer head shark boxed style that meshes well with Toyota’s RAV4. Don’t forget full LED lighting that add a nice futuristic touch to the outside. A panoramic sunroof is included on the limited trim. On the inside, expect soft-tex seating materials laid throughout along with a roomy cabin. 

Hybrids 

75% of buyers believe a Hybrid electric vehicle must be plugged in to charge. Hybrid electric vehicles are powered by two systems; an internal combustion engine and an electric motor that is charged through regenerative braking from energy stored in the battery. Whereas fuel burning vehicles build performance as the engine speeds. Since 1996, Toyota has paved the way in customer acceptance with the release of the Prius. With 20 miles to the gallon becoming synonymous with core technology and environmentally friendly fuel-efficient means of transportation. Now at 50 MPG, it dominates the automotive industry with a portfolio approach that there is no one size fits all solution. This vigorous tribe of Electrified vehicles encompasses the following: SiennaVensaRav4 Prime and the bZ4x.

Technology

A few major highlights surrounding the up-to-date technology include a digital key feature and wireless charging. The digital key gives owners the ability to lock, unlock, and start the vehicle with a tap of a smartphone. Convenience is key! It’s more easy than ever to swap cars with friends and family without the hassle of misplacing a physical key. Charging is also compatible with 150 kW direct current quick charging; capable of 80% charge in 30 minutes. Take climate control to a new level with seat and steering wheel heaters, plus a front-seat radiant foot-heater (a first for Toyota). 

Hydrogen Fuel Cells 

Kenworth Truck Company and Toyota Motor North America are collaborating to develop zero-emission T680s powered by Toyota hydrogen fuel cell electric powertrains. This collaboration is part of the Zero and Near-Zero Emissions Freight Facilities grant dedicated to the state of California to develop a viable hydrogen network. With 48 stations open today, 360 MAGAZINE had the opportunity to visit a Shell facility during the trip for a tutorial to a foreign concept by Norm of the ride & drive team. Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, which use electric motors, are much more energy efficient. For instance, Mirai is innovative and defies the linear school of thought with regards to a Hybrid. It encourages more reasons to go Hydrogen. When you start the engine, hydrogen travels to the Fuel Cell Stack, where it combines with oxygen from the outside air to create electricity. At the core, it’s an extraordinary zero emission ride while the Hydrogen from the fuel tank and air entering from the intake meet in the Fuel Cell Stack. There, a chemical reaction involving the oxygen in the air and hydrogen creates electricity powering the vehicle. In the end, the only by-product is water, defining the future of fueling.

ALiLA Marea Beach Resort, is nestled alongside a magnificent stretch of the Pacific Ocean. Its robust design effortlessly blends into its natural habitat – like water and rock, making it an ideal locale for this activation. Similar in type to the lodging grounds, bZ4X is posed to marvel with its unwavering curb appeal and performance. Finally, Toyota has struck a cord with both environmentalists and car enthusiasts alike. The bZ4X is set to hit dealerships in late Spring of 2023.

POLESTAR 2 ANNOUNCED

Polestar, the electric performance car brand from Sweden, today announced the extended range, lower pricing, and bespoke configuration for the model year 2022 Polestar 2. The addition of a new single motor powertrain makes the vehicle more accessible than ever before, while simultaneously offering the greatest range of a Polestar 2 to date. Also new for 2022 is an optional heat pump, which is designed to extend the vehicle’s range up to an additional 10 percent under certain climate conditions.

The new Polestar 2 Long range Single motor offers the lowest price and longest range in the lineup, with an estimated range of 265 miles* and a starting price of $45,900 USD, or as low as $34,900 after qualified federal, state, and utility incentives**. Customers can also add on the available Plus and Pilot Packs to enhance the specification of their vehicle. Deliveries are expected to begin at the end of 2021.

The Polestar 2 Long range Dual motor is now available for bespoke configuration, allowing customers flexibility to order a car which best suits their lifestyle. Starting at $49,900, or as low as $38,900 after qualifying incentives**, the Long range Dual motor Polestar 2 has 408 hp and an EPA range of 249 miles – an increase of 16 miles over the 2021 car’s range. As with the single-motor Polestar 2, Plus and Pilot Packs are available to order. The dual-motor Polestar 2 also can be ordered with a Performance Pack for increased driver focus, and deliveries are expected to begin in October of 2021.

“We are excited to introduce the expanded Polestar 2 range, which offers an ideal configuration for every lifestyle,” said Gregor Hembrough, Head of Polestar in North America. “As we roll the brand out to 20 new US markets this year, we have the product, pricing and convenience to place Polestar at the top of consumer shopping lists.”

These new variants can be ordered with three optional packs that allow for a streamlined experience. These include:

  • The Plus Pack ($4,000) debuts a mechanical heat pump, which is designed to extend the vehicle’s range by up to 10% under certain conditions. The heat pump is complemented by a full-length panoramic glass roof, a premium interior featuring a Harman Kardon audio system, WeaveTech vegan upholstery, and high-level interior illumination. For those living in cold weather locales, the package offers a “must have” combination of comfort and range preservation.
  • The Pilot Pack ($3,200) offers enhanced safety and driver assistance features, such as Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Pilot Assist, Blind Spot Information System (BLISTM), Cross Traffic Alert, along with a 360-degree surround view camera and all-round parking sensors, plus more advanced safety features.
  • The Performance Pack ($5,000) features adjustable Öhlins suspension dampers supporting the front and rear forged 20-inch alloy wheels, Brembo brakes, Continental sport tires, and Polestar’s signature ‘Swedish gold’ aesthetic details. (Only available on Polestar 2 Long range Dual motor.)

Additional single options include a ventilated Nappa leather interior ($4,000), 20” wheels with unique spoke pattern ($1,200), a semi-electric tow bar ($1,200) and metallic paint ($1,200).

All versions of the Polestar 2 feature the world debut of Google’s Android Automotive OS native infotainment system with key features such as Google Assistant and Google Maps built-in.

Polestar produces two electric performance cars. Polestar 1 is a low-volume electric performance hybrid GT with a carbon fiber body, 619 hp, 738 lb-ft of torque, and an MPGe of 60 miles – the longest of any hybrid car in the world. The Polestar 2 electric performance fastback is the company’s first fully electric, high volume car. NIO is a Chinese multinational automobile manufacturer headquartered in Shanghai, specializing in designing and developing electric vehicles. The company is also involved in the FIA Formula E Championship, although NIO has ended funding the team after selling to Lisheng Racing.

Xpeng

Xpeng or Xiaopeng Motors, also known as XMotors.ai, is a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer. The company is headquartered in Guangzhou, with offices in Mountain View, California in the US and is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange.

Li Auto

Also known as Li Xiang, the company builds electric vehicles that use range extenders for a power supply, Li Auto has vehicle manufacturing, engineering, and design services located in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province with corporate headquarters and research and development located in Beijing.

Faraday Future

Faraday Future (FF) is a California-based global shared intelligent mobility ecosystem. Established in May 2014, the company is headquartered in Los Angeles along with its R&D Center and Futurist Testing Lab, and has offices in Silicon Valley, Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu. FF is poised to break the boundaries between the Internet, IT, creative, and auto industries with product and service offerings that integrate new energy, AI, Internet, and sharing models. FF’s vision is to create a shared intelligent mobility ecosystem that empowers everyone to move, connect, breathe, and live freely.

Polestar 

Polestar is a Swedish automotive brand established in 1996 by Volvo Cars‘ partner Flash/Polestar Racing and acquired in 2015 by the former. It is owned by Volvo Cars and by extension its parent company Geely. Geely describes the brand as “independent” from 2017 onwards and “co-owned” by it and Volvo Cars. It is headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden with vehicle production taking place in China. The company develops electric performance cars and offers performance hardware upgrades and engine software optimizations for Volvo models through their Polestar Engineered division.

Geely Zeekr

Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co., Ltd (ZGH), commonly known as Geely, is a Chinese multinational automotive company headquartered in Hangzhou, Zhejiang. The company is privately held by Chinese billionaire business magnate Li Shufu. It was established in 1986 and entered the automotive industry in 1997 with its Geely Auto brand. It sells passenger vehicles under the Geely Auto, LotusLynk & CoProton, and Volvo brands as well as commercial only vehicles under the London EV Company and Yuan Cheng Auto (Farizon Auto) brands.

POLESTAR 2 REVEALED AT GOODWOOD FESTIVAL

  • Experimental Polestar 2 pushes the boundaries of the electric performance fastback

Polestar has revealed an experimental Polestar 2 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The EV has been given a makeover that was inspired by CEO Thomas Ingenlath’s desire to push the boundaries of the electric performance fastback’s design and performance potential.

“I challenged the design and engineering teams to play with Polestar 2 and come up with something that makes a strong statement for Goodwood,” comments Ingenlath. “For a few months I have enjoyed driving another experimental Polestar 2, nicknamed ‘Beast,’ around our Gothenburg campus, which inspired the team to come up with this version for Goodwood. We want to flex our muscles and explore opportunities.”

The Long range Dual motor Polestar 2 now produces a combined output of 476 hp (350 kW) from its twin electric motors. The car has been given a stronger stance, with a wider track (+10 mm on each side) and lower ride height (-30 mm). Widened wheel arches have been fitted, required to house the 9×21-inch wheels and 6-piston Akebono front brakes from Polestar 1. The 275/30R21 Pirelli PZero Rosso performance tires are also carried over from Polestar 1.

The springs have been stiffened by 80% at the front and 40% at the rear compared to the original performance units, and the adjustable Öhlins DFV dampers have been upgraded to Öhlins three-way performance dampers which are approximately 30% stiffer than the road and track originals. To further increase rigidity, the carbon fiber front suspension strut bar from a Volvo S60 Polestar Engineered has been fitted, complemented by a custom-fabricated rear strut bar.

“This car is what happens when we are given freedom to go beyond our limits,” says Joakim Rydholm, Polestar’s chief chassis engineer. “We already have such great handling and performance characteristics in Polestar 2, but when Thomas asked me to make something special for Goodwood, I was really excited to up the stakes.”

In addition to the mechanical upgrades, the car features updated front and rear bumpers. The car is finished in Snow Matte with a Magnesium Matte racing stripe, color-coded front grid and glossy black mirrors. Bumpers and side skirts feature an additional color-coded design accent. The wheels feature dual tonality of glossy and matte black surfaces.

Maximilian Missoni, Head of Design at Polestar, comments: “It’s always exciting to push a little bit further. This is one of the benefits of being a start-up like Polestar—we don’t have a mould to fit into so we can experiment with fun projects like this.”

Hillclimb runs will be completed during the event and the experimental Polestar 2 can be found in the First Glance Paddock, adjacent to the Polestar stand. The car will be piloted by Polestar’s lead chassis engineer, Joakim Rydholm, who made his first appearance at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2018 with the debut of the first driving prototype of Polestar 1.

Joakim Rydholm concludes: “Polestar 2 is already a wonderfully dynamic car and we have spent thousands of hours fine-tuning its driving characteristics. The new chassis set-up for Goodwood has really taken it to the next level. I can’t wait to go up the hill!”

Polestar Announces Partnership with Circulor as an Important Step in Transparency Journey

  • Polestar enters strategic partnership with blockchain provider Circulor

Polestar, the electric performance car brand, is spearheading a movement for transparency throughout the automotive industry to accelerate the shift to a climate-neutral future. In April 2021, the company announced plans for a climate neutral car by 2030—Polestar now communicates an important step on its transparency journey, announcing a new partnership with blockchain provider Circulor.

Polestar already works with Circulor on the traceability of cobalt in the batteries for the Polestar 2 electric performance fastback. With this new partnership, Polestar and Circulor have set a progressive scope and ambition that aims to entail a range of raw materials, focusing on those with identified risks in either environmental and/or human rights, such as nickel, mica, manganese, graphite and lithium, amongst others.

True climate action needs transparency, and the aim with CO2e tracking is to finally see the embedded emissions that have been created as part of the production process, per facility as well as those inherited from suppliers through the supply chain. The greenhouse gas tracking solution offered by Circulor enables a more accurate CO2e footprint than using generic emissions data from databases.

Circulor supports businesses in achieving more sustainable supply chains and works with blockchain technology to trace materials. A blockchain is a digital ledger containing a list of records linked to each other via cryptography. A ‘digital twin’ for the raw material being traced is created and the material is then tracked through the supply chain, creating a digital thread that follows and records the various industrial processes and transformations it undergoes.

This means that the source and the methods by which the raw materials are extracted, processed and transported, can be better regulated, helping to ensure that the materials used in battery production come from the expected mines or recycling facilities. Blockchain technology is already applied to Polestar 2, to support the traceability of cobalt in its batteries.

Polestar is on a mission to drive the shift to sustainable mobility. Supply chain transparency is one big step on the journey. Consumers will be able to follow the journey thanks to Polestar’s Product Sustainability Declaration, which discloses carbon footprint and traced risk materials through labeling on the company website and in Polestar Spaces, setting a unique transparency precedent for the industry.
