The London Concours presented by Montres Breguet, each year, places one individual’s car collection firmly in the limelight, revealing the personal stories and immense passion which created it. This year The Collector celebrates Oxfordshire-based automotive aficionado, co-founder of evo magazine and Harry’s Garage, Harry Metcalfe, and his eclectic car collection.

Setting the tone nicely is Harry’s Ferrari Testarossa ‘Monodado’, a car which featured heavily in the Harry’s Garage YouTube channel as it undertook a legendary journey from Harry’s home in the Cotswolds to the Sahara Desert. The Pininfarina-designed car was launched at the Paris Motor Show in 1984 and is the epitome of ‘80s indulgence and excess. Harry’s car is a 1987 Ferrari Testarossa, powered by a naturally aspirated dry-sump 4.9-litre Flat-12 engine – which is capable of propelling the car from 0-60mph in just over five seconds.

Alongside it, another ‘80s poster car, the Lamborghini Countach. Harry’s car is a 5000 Quattrovalvole – meaning 4 valves per cylinder. This is the highest horsepower version of the Countach ever made, producing 449hp. One of the most recognizable cars in recent history, the Countach epitomizes the decade of the 1980s, despite having been in production since 1974, where it remained until 1990. Harry’s particular car was the car that launched the Countach 5000 Quattrovalvole at the London Motor Show in 1987, and he also had legendary Lamborghini test driver Valentino Balboni sign the interior during one if its many trips to Italy – a very special car indeed.

The display will also include several of Harry’s Jaguars. Most notable among them are two Jaguar Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) cars. These are limited edition, fettled versions of Jaguar’s finest motor cars designed purely for motoring pleasure, in this instance Harry is bringing along a Jaguar F-TYPE ‘Project 7’ and a Jaguar XE SV ‘Project 8’.

The Jaguar F-TYPE is a limited-edition car, with only 250 ever made. Project 7 was inspired Jaguar’s racing pedigree. Its name derived from the seven times Jaguar has won the famous Le Mans 24-hour race. Three of those historic wins were in the iconic D‑type, and the brief to Jaguar’s designers with the Project 7 was to conceive a modern-day D‑type. Harry was involved in the car from its formative days, providing feedback on the first prototype vehicles. Harry’s car is number 1 of 250, and as such has a few special features including the striking orange detailing on the front grille, calipers, mirrors and the underside of the rear spoiler. Inside the boot, every member of Jaguar’s SVO team has signed the vehicle, making it truly unique.

The Jaguar XE SV Project 8 is the most powerful road legal Jaguar in history – producing 592hp from a 5.0-litre Supercharged V8 engine. The car is a limited production run of just 300 cars worldwide, each one hand-assembled at the SVO Technical Centre in Warwickshire, England. The Project 8 still holds the fastest ever lap for a four-door production sedan at the Nürburgring Nordschleife – having beaten many renowned supercars in the process. Harry’s car is the first ever Project 8 and is a bespoke version in a striking deep purple with a distinctive black stripe, it is a four-seater version with a black roof and lightweight forged black alloy wheels.

Harry is also bringing with him a selection of six Paris Dakar winning motorbikes from 1979 – 1998. Harry has had a longstanding love of motorbikes having spent a lot of time during his formative years at his parents’ house in Wales riding motorbikes around the nearby forests and fields. Bikes that visitors can expect to see on the stand include a 1978 Yamaha XT500, a 1984 BMW R80 G/S Paris Dakar, a Honda XL500R Paris Dakar, a 1989 Honda Africa Twin 650 Marathon, a 1989 Yamaha Super Tenere 750 and a 1991 Cagiva Elefant 900ie – which all help to chronicle the legendary off-road rally event which started out in 1978 pitting competitors against each other on the toughest off-road terrain from Paris France to Dakar, Senegal. He is also bringing along two of his favorite road bikes, a 1974 Kawasaki KH750 (the biggest two-stroke production superbike), which has a fearsome reputation and was banned in the US in 1976 for breaching emissions regulations, and a 1979 Honda CBX which is well-known for being the first ever six-cylinder production bike.

Rounding out a collection of eight cars and eight bikes, Harry is also bringing his 1978 Jaguar XJC V12 manual, which is currently undergoing a thorough restoration in the hands of Painting Classic Cars in Eastbourne, his recently restored 1971 Lamborghini Espada Series 2, which took home class honors at last year’s show, as well as his two Lotus models, a beautiful 1973 Lotus Elan Sprint and a classic 1987 Lotus Esprit Turbo HC.

Previously held over two days, the London Concours 2021 shifts to a three-day event to capitalize on visitor demand for more luxury brand content – from jewelry to bespoke suits – and modern supercars. The three days will be a VIP Preview Day, Style Edition and Supercar Day. At the heart of each day will remain the collection of nearly 100 rare and iconic luxury cars of all ages that has quickly cemented London Concours as one of the UK’s top motoring events.

Lotus is working with a renowned British music producer, inspired by the engine note of the iconic Type 49, to develop a range of sounds for the all-electric Evija hypercar. Patrick Patrikios has written and produced for Olly Murs, Sia, Britney Spears, Pixie Lott, and numerous other world-famous stars. He was Brit Award-nominated in 2018 for his collaboration with Little Mix, and the tracks he’s worked on have been streamed more than a billion times. “We wanted to create a soundscape for the Evija that was recognizably and distinctively Lotus,” said Patrick. “I sat with the development team at Hethel and discussed what that should be. We wanted something intrinsically connected to Lotus so we could set an audio blueprint for its future electric cars.”

Patrick loved the idea of using a famous Lotus as a starting point, and what better example than the Type 49 – one of the most iconic race cars of all time. He explained: “There’s a purity to that V8, a raw edge and an emotion that stirs something in your soul, just like the best songs.” The process began with the recording of a Type 49, which Patrick fed into his computer. In digitally manipulating the sound he and the Lotus team realized that slowing the engine note down created a similar frequency to the natural driving sound produced by the Evija’s advanced all-electric drivetrain.

“I adjusted the replay speeds and digital filtering of the Type 49 to generate a soundscape for the Evija – it was a very organic process,” said Patrick. “We all wanted something to spark an emotional connection between car and driver. Sound is hugely influential when it comes to creating and forming emotions, to enrich that bond that’s such a critical part of the Lotus experience.” Patrick concluded: “I love that the sound from one of the most iconic Lotus race cars of all time has been the inspiration for its newest. There’s a symmetry to it which is beautiful.”

Welshman Patrick has been a Lotus fan since childhood thanks to his car-loving father. An Evora driver, he splits his time between Los Angeles and the UK. His body of work includes Hollywood movie soundtracks as well as songs from internationally renowned recording artists. Patrick’s primary task was to craft the Evija’s external noise as it begins to deliver its immense ‘0-186mph (300km/h) in under nine seconds’ acceleration. However, using the Evija soundscape he created, he has also developed chimes and tones for everything from the activation of the indicators to the seatbelt warning. Few race cars from any motorsport brand are as celebrated as the Lotus Type 49. It won on its first Formula 1 outing, the 1967 Dutch Grand Prix, with legendary driver Jim Clark at the wheel, and a Type 49 was on pole position at every race for the rest of the season. The following year Graham Hill won the F1 Drivers’ Championship in a Type 49. Only 12 examples were ever made, and the car will be forever associated with two world debuts. The Type 49 was the first to use the all-new Lotus-developed Cosworth-Ford DFV engine that would dominate the Formula 1 grid for more than a decade, and it also marked the first appearance of the iconic red, white and gold colors of Lotus sponsor Gold Leaf, one of the most recognizable motorsport liveries of all time.

SWIZZ BEATZ SWITCHES TO ASCAP

ASCAP, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, the world leader in performing rights and advocacy for music creators, today announced that internationally acclaimed Grammy-winning songwriter-producer and global entrepreneur Kasseem Dean, aka Swizz Beatz, has moved to ASCAP. Known for his work on songs including DMX’s “Ruff Ryders Anthem,” T.I.’s “Bring Em Out,” Lil Wayne’s “Uproar,” Mýa’s “The Best of Me” and more, the megaproducer is also the co-creator of Verzuz, the livestreaming music battle series and cultural phenomenon he started in early 2020 with Timbaland.

Swizz Beatz has been in the music and business world since he was 16. He began deejaying and working at his uncle’s company, Ruff Ryder Records, while still in high school. Within a short time, Swizz produced the company’s first hit, by DMX. More success followed–as a producer and artist. At 23, Swizz founded his own record label, Full Surface Records, with Clive Davis and earned a Grammy Award at the age of 33. As a producer, Swizz has worked with a diverse range of artists and some of the biggest names in the world including Jay-Z, Madonna, Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Metallica, contributing to the sale of over 350 million records sold worldwide.

A recent graduate of Harvard Business School’s Owner/President Management Program, Swizz’s talents and success extend well beyond music. He is an innovative fashion designer, collaborating with Bally, Reebok, Christian Louboutin, Aston Martin, Lotus, and Audemar Piguet. In 2015, he joined global spirit giant Bacardi as their Global Chief Creative for Culture, overseeing more than 300 brands within the company’s portfolio. An art collector since his 20s, he launched The Dean Collection in 2014, a discovery zone for art enthusiasts who appreciate art not just from the greats but also from aspiring and new artists alike.

Swizz is actively involved in many charities, with a particular focus on children: he works closely with his wife Alicia Keys’s organization Keep A Child Alive to fight AIDS and poverty in Africa; he adopted the Bronx Charter School for the Arts; is the Global Ambassador for New York City’s HHC (Health and Hospitals Corporation); serves on the board of Children’s Rights, which provides legal services to foster children to protect their rights; and currently sits on the Board of Trustees of the Brooklyn Museum.

MICHELIN STAR RECIPIENTS

3 MICHELIN STARS FOR HÉLÈNE DARROZE AND 2 MICHELIN STARS FOR ANDREW WONG IN 1 NIGHT

It was an incredible evening last night in the UK as the Michelin Great Britain and Ireland 2021 restaurant recipients was announced. No less than 23 restaurants were awarded the new Michelin green star for sustainability. Additionally, 17 new one-star restaurants, 3 new two-star restaurants, and 2 new three-star restaurants were awarded –bringing the total number of Michelin recognized restaurants within the UK to 185. This has been a devastating year for hospitality in the British Isles, so these announcements were not only very welcome, but saw some very emotional responses from everyone involved.

For us here at Lotus London, we are delighted to announce that the incredible Hélène Darroze was awarded 3 stars for her restaurant in Mayfair, Hélène Darroze at The Connaught–just one week after her restaurant in Paris, Marsan par Hélène Darroze, was awarded 2 stars by the Michelin Guide France. Also, the truly magnificent Andrew Wong was awarded a second star for his restaurant in Pimlico, A.Wong. Chinese restaurants have been particularly hard hit by the pandemic, and this is the first time Michelin has recognized Chinese food at this level outside of Asia, so it was cause for a double celebration for the UK.

HÉLÈNE DARROZE HONORED WITH 5 MICHELIN STARS IN ONE WEEK

2021 is already proving an exceptional vintage for Hélène Darroze. After receiving a second star in the Michelin Guide France last week for her restaurant “Marsan” in Paris, she has now been awarded the ultimate 3 stars in the Michelin Guide Great Britain and Ireland for her London restaurant “Hélène Darroze at The Connaught”, within The Connaught Hotel.

In 2008, the legendary Connaught Hotel in prestigious Mayfair was searching for a French chef to run its kitchen and reconnect with the tradition of French cuisine. The Connaught Hotel turned to Hélène Darroze, who took up the challenge and responsibility. It was awarded its first Michelin star in 2009, six months after opening. A second star was awarded to the restaurant in 2011.

Speaking after the ceremony, Hélène said: “It is with immense emotion and honor that I receive this award. My first thoughts are with my teams, especially Kirk Whittle, my pastry accomplice for the last 17 years, Executive Chef Marco Zampese and Restaurant Manager Mirko Benzo, who have been working with me at The Connaught for over 8 years. My thoughts also go out to Paddy McKillen, co-owner of The Connaught, who has trusted me to take the reins of the gourmet restaurant since 2008. My appreciation particularly goes to the small suppliers who have helped us, especially the wonderful and emerging British producers, without whom good cooking would not be possible, and need support at this time. I am also particularly proud to receive this award alongside my friend, Chef Clare Smyth. Believe in your dreams – everything is possible, and stay true to your femininity!

Faithful to her philosophy both in Paris and London, Hélène Darroze creates a cuisine that gives pride to produce, whether sourced in her native Les Landes and the Basque Country regions where she grew up, or in the British Isles. This signature cuisine–inspired not just by her roots, but also her travels, the people she has met, and of course her strong link with the United Kingdom–is remarkably executed by Marco Zampese, assisted by a team of 15 people, and directed by Mirko Benzo and his collaborators in the prestigious dining, recently renovated by Pierre Yovanovitch.

CELEBRATIONS AS A.WONG RECEIVES COVETED SECOND MICHELIN STAR

Restaurant A.Wong was awarded a second Michelin star yesterday evening at the 2021 edition of the prestigious Michelin Guide Great Britain and Ireland, streamed live from Paris.

This marks the first time a Chinese restaurant outside Asia has been honored in this way.

Chef Patron Andrew Wong opened A.Wong with his wife Nathalie and Restaurant Director, Chinobek in 2012. Showcasing the rich diversity of China’s food culture and its 14 international borders, the restaurant was awarded its first Michelin star in 2017.

Based on an intuitive expression of tradition, authenticity, and craft, Andrew garners inspiration from the work of past ancestors and present masters with equal respect. He celebrates their truest form with a fresh perspective and subtle innovation.

Andrew commented, “We are beyond delighted to have been recognized by Michelin with a second star. We have an incredible team who have supported us every day and been such an integral part of this journey. Like so many restaurants, this has been a hard and challenging year, and we’re all just looking forward to celebrating-virtually-and hopefully in person in the not-too-distant future!

Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion Fast Facts:

  • 551 genuine and period-correct competition cars competed.
  • Nissan, and its US predecessor Datsun, was celebrated throughout the event, as the brand became the first Japanese manufacturer to be honored at the Reunion.
  • Since 2001, Rolex has partnered in this cornerstone event during Monterey Car Week, united by values of tradition and innovation that have shaped the watchmaking and automotive worlds.
  • During Picnic in the Paddock, legends of the sport, Sir Jackie Stewart, fellow Rolex Testimonee Tom Kristensen and FIA Formula 1® Drivers’ World Champion Mika Häkkinen, recounted motoring anecdotes that will live long in the memories of those who attended.
  • Rolex Testimonee Sir Jackie Stewart first competed at Laguna Seca in 1965 and this year celebrates a 50-year partnership with the Swiss watch brand. The Scottish legend said: “It is an honor to witness these incredible motor racing cars compete as they were built to; from the early 20th Century right the way through to the 1990s, they truly tell the story of the heritage and evolution in our sport. The highest standards of precision and engineering on show link Rolex and the Reunion, while underlining Rolex’s commitment to motor sport globally.”
  • Nissan’s long-term involvement in motor sport was exhibited, from the 1971 Datsun 510, to the Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo – the 1994 Rolex 24 At DAYTONA winner – and the 2019 Formula E Nissan racing car.
  • Notable Nissan drivers and team owners were present, including John Morton, Peter Brock and Steve Millen, along with comedian Adam Carolla who drove his 300ZX Turbo formerly owned by Paul Newman.
  • Meanwhile, legendary chassis from Lotus, Lola, McLaren, AAR and Surtees formed part of the 50th anniversary of Formula 5000.

Taking a blend of exotic and lightweight materials to produce a truly noble sports car, the Elise Cup 260 is considerably greater than the sum of its parts. Building on the production Elise Cup 250 released earlier this year, and drawing heavily on the development the motorsport Elise Race 250, the Elise Cup 260’s performance is formed through a first-class combination of intelligent engineering and advanced aerodynamics as well as a boost in engine performance. Not only the lightest ever Elise Cup, it’s also the heaviest at speed – with the car’s design and aero configuration generating up to 180 kg of downforce at 151 mph. Key to this exceptionally high level of downforce are the new louvred front wheel-arch vents, lightweight carbon fibre front splitter and wide high mounted rear wing. With a no-holds-barred approach, the Elise Cup 260 includes nearly all of the lightweight Elise Cup options as standard, ranging from the sill covers, roll hoop cover, front access panel and engine cover which are all in carbon to the two-piece brake discs. With a race chassis developed by Lotus Motorsport, two way adjustable Nitron dampers – fitted to an Elise for the first time, a polycarbonate backlight glass and hand-trimmed interior with bespoke detailing, the Elise Cup 260 will earn its reputation as the ultimate Elise.

Lotus Elise Cup 260 – race proven

Lotus’ coveted Elise and Exige Cup versions represent a model’s most concentrated iteration – conceived, designed and constructed using the company’s unique sports car DNA – each with the express aim of providing an unrivalled driving experience on the road as well as the track.

Delivering big gains from focused development, the new Elise Cup 260 provides a sparkling blend of purpose with purity at the top of the Elise line up. With 250 hp from the supercharged engine, designed to make the most of the Elise’s exceptionally stiff extruded and bonded aluminium chassis, it endows the Elise Cup 260 phenomenal straight-line speed, agile handling and, with the significant downforce available and the wider, road-legal motorsport tyres, harder and faster cornering. These elements combine to deliver a lap of the Hethel track in just 1 minute 32 seconds, 2.5 seconds faster than the Elise Cup 250.
The Elise Cup 260 continues the new model’s visual styling, first introduced on the Elise Sport and Sprint models, but incorporates the aero lessons learnt from Lotus’ latest models, including the Evora GT 430. This includes louvred front wheel arch vents to reduce lift, and a new oversize motorsport-derived rear wing, developed from the Lotus 3-Eleven. Working with the redesigned lightweight front clam panel, with wider apertures, carbon front splitter and the rear diffuser, these generate up to 180 kg of downforce at the car’s top speed of 151mph. This is a 44% gain on the already impressive Elise Cup 250, allowing greater grip levels and higher cornering speeds.

As befitting the marque which was first to build and run a carbon fibre F1 car, the Elise Cup 260 comes with lightweight carbon fibre and composite components as standard. These include the large rear wing, the front access panel which saves 1.1kg, the engine cover saving 3.3kg, the roll hoop cover, 0.7kg and the side sill covers, 0.8kg. Ultra-efficient and lightweight two-piece brake discs save a further 4 kg. Standard lightweight parts carried over from the Elise Cup 250 include Lotus’ beautifully finished lightweight carbon race seats, weighing 6 kg each, a Lithium-Ion battery, saving 9 kg, lightweight forged alloy wheels and a polycarbonate rear screen. Collectively the Elise Cup 260 is 15 kg lighter than the Elise Cup 250, weighing in at just 902 kg (unladen) and 862 kg in the lightest possible dry configuration.

The all-alloy, chargecooled supercharged 1.8-litre engine has undergone development, with new induction components and revised calibration. Delivering 250 hp and 255 Nm of torque it’s mated to a six-speed manual gearbox with sports ratios. The change to the induction system including a race derived performance air filter and the Elise’s tuned exhaust note means that the Elise Cup 260 retains the crown for best-sounding forced-induction four-cylinder on the market. Overall, the fall in mass and rise in power boosts acceleration, with 0-60 mph dispatched in 3.8 seconds and a power to weight ratio of 290 hp / tonne (dry). Emissions figures are also impressive, at 175 g / km CO2.

Providing its trademark handling and steering feel, the Elise Cup 260 features fully independent double wishbone suspension with an adjustable front anti-roll bar, with Nitron coaxial coil springs and, for the first time on an Elise, adjustable Nitron high-performance dampers. With 24 settings for rebound and compression, the dampers allow owners to perfectly dial-in the car’s setup to their preference.

As standard, the Elise Cup 260 comes with ultra-lightweight motorsport forged alloy wheels (16-inch at the front and 17-inch at the rear) and are fitted with Yokohama Advan Neova AD08R tyres (205/45 R16 front & 235/40 R17 rear) which have been specifically developed for high performance track and road use. 10 mm wider front and rear than the tyres fitted to the Elise Cup 250, they provide the mechanical grip necessary to exploit the power and downforce the car generates. Braking is provided by AP Racing twin-piston front calipers and Brembo at the rear, which are perfectly matched to the lightweight two-piece brake discs.


The Elise Cup 260’s interior bears testament to the car’s handbuilt nature, with beautifully detailed components. Centre of attention is the detailed, manual gearbox’s open gate mechanism, which is both technically and aesthetically appealing. Developed by Lotus, it provides precise and direct gear changes for quicker shifting.


The finish of Lotus’ in-house manufactured carbon race seats, trimmed in black Alcantara® with contrast red or yellow stitching, is echoed by the door panels and face-level vents. Bodywork keyed colour inserts for the sports seats, transmission console, HVAC surround and window switches are both complemented by the cabin’s exposed aluminium and carbon fibre elements including a new carbon fibre instrument binnacle cover.

Interior options include an Alcantara® trimmed steering wheel and sill covers, leather or tartan trim packs for seats or door panels. Other options, including an in-car entertainment system, including iPod® connectivity and Bluetooth® functionality, can all be selected when ordering.
