The Avett Brothers

In a letter penned by Seth Avett, Grammy Award®-nominated collective THE AVETT BROTHERS revealed today that they will be releasing their new album, Closer Than Together [American/Republic Records], on Friday, October 4, 2019. Read the mission statement for Closer Than Together here and below. The first single from the record “High Steppin’” was also released today along with its official music video.

Listen to “High Steppin’” HERE and watch the official music video HERE.

The mission statement touches on the inspiration behind the upcoming album, pulling from feelings about the current state of the world and observations reflected from the band’s own experiences. Seth Avett describes, “The last thing the world needs is another piece of sociopolitical commentary… We didn’t make a record that was meant to comment on the sociopolitical landscape that we live in. We did, however, make an album that is obviously informed by what is happening now on a grander scale all around us…because we are a part of it and it is a part of us…The Avett Brothers will probably never make a sociopolitical record. But if we did, it might sound something like this.” Read the full letter below

The video for “High Steppin’” shows Scott Avett as a “rhinestone cowboy” and Seth Avett as what some could describe as “death” as his passenger. The two ride together and encounter a stop in the road where Bob Crawford and steppers are waiting for them. In a spoken word interlude Seth Avett notes that “you can only live one day at a time, only drive one hot rod at a time, only say one word at a time, only think one thought at a time….” A meaningful commentary on life that finishes with a hopeful ending.

Heralding the album’s impending arrival, THE AVETT BROTHERS continue on a string of tour dates throughout the year including three sold out nights at Red RocksThe Greek Theatre in Los Angeles (August 22nd), and performances at BonnarooMountain Jam, and more. Not to mention their recently announced (and sold out) The Avett Brothers at the Beach four night festival in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, February 27-March 2nd.  See their full tour dates here: www.theavettbrothers.com/tour

MISSION STATEMENT: CLOSER THAN TOGETHER

The last thing the world needs is another piece of sociopolitical commentary. We, as a species that boasts at least some semblance of consciousness, are entering an odd new form of fatigue: one that encompasses not only our observance of the behavior of others (nefarious and otherwise), but also our seemingly unlimited endurance to loudly judge and wax philosophically about it. Of course, in each instance, regardless of its nature or circumstance, our own personal opinions are presented as the clear, correct, and only perspective on any given subject. We speak as if we are not one body, though we are. We judge as if we don’t value the judgment of others upon us, though we do. We forget to put our feet into the shoes of our neighbor, and curse them for making the same ancient mistake.

My brother and I have never been more aware of our own failings in the department of golden-rule navigation. We see it in ourselves and we are accustomed to seeing it in our neighborhood, our state, our country, our planet. We speak daily with each other about the lunacy of the world in which we live… the beauty of it, the mystery of it, the hilarity and the unspeakable calamity of it. We talk about God and community and evil and what forgiveness is and what it means to aim for unconditional love in a land (and body) full of conditions. Sometimes we feel better just from speaking about it with a loved one. Sometimes we don’t and we go to our little bunks on the tour bus and continue to process the latest example of fear-inducing news that our phones have indiscriminately handed us. We then simultaneously endeavor to forgive ourselves for being in the fortunate position of having bunks in a tour bus to lie down on. In whatever way we process both personal and universally-affecting events, at some point, these conversations grow melodies and find themselves stepping back into our lives in the forms of songs.

As our records tend to be, the newest – entitled ‘Closer Than Together’ – is certainly led by the personal narrative of our own lives. In this way, there is no massive departure from our continued artistic language. This chapter however, perhaps in part because of our age or our time, wanders inevitably into hallways both social and political. These are songs developed through and inspired by not only what we see inside our homes and our travels, but by the connections we are blessed to nourish, the conversations by which we are surprised and intrigued, and by the far-reaching experiences of our distant brothers and sisters. We are family men with good and evil in our hearts, and the pains and joys in this world are mirrored on the small scale of our own personal existence. The songs herein are reflections of what we are. ‘We’ meaning Scott and me. ‘We’ meaning this family and this band. ‘We’ meaning the strangers we’ve had (and will have) the honor of encountering all over the world. ‘We’ meaning ‘We the People’.

We didn’t make a record that was meant to comment on the sociopolitical landscape that we live in. We did, however, make an album that is obviously informed by what is happening now on a grander scale all around us…because we are a part of it and it is a part of us. ‘Closer Than Together’ is a record of obvious American origin – a creation that fittingly could only come about through hard work, measured freedom, awe-inspiring landscapes, and perfectly flawed individualism.

The Avett Brothers will probably never make a sociopolitical record. But if we did, it might sound something like this.

SUR

Northern California bred musician/producer Zack Arnett of SUR releases the video for “Only Road” today. The video was directed by Meeno and shot on the road as Arnett headed to Lake Buena Vista, CA for his performance at the Lighting In A Bottle Festival last month. “Only Road” was released in May on Interscope Records and was written by Zack Arnett and Jeff Gitty who also took on producer duties with additional production by Arnett. Watch the video for “Only Road” HERE.

“The making of the ‘Only Road’ video came together much like the song did,” says Zack Arnett. “We didn’t overthink it, we freestyled our way through it allowing the organic moments to come together and tell the story. These projects are what I live for, collaborating with chaos to make excellence.”

“Ever since I read Kerouac when I was 14 my soul’s been hobo’ing around,” says Meeno.  “When I found my fellow dharma bum, Zack, I knew we could take our act on the road. His talent, my camera, that’s all we needed.”

SUR will perform at the Wanderlust’s Squaw Valley Festival in Lake Tahoe, CA on July 19 & 20.  More information on the festival is HERE.

SUR is the brainchild of musician/producer Zack Arnett, who also adds to his credentials visual artist, poet, medicinal farmer and apothecarian. SUR released his debut SAVAGE BEAST EP last May.  The six-track set features the anthem-like rockers LEAN BACK , STIX + STONESALL I NEED and“MAKE IT TO MORNING”.  SUR has been chosen as Fox Sports’ Artist of the Month for June with his music featured in programming across the platform and “Only Road” appears in the sports documentary “40 Days: GGG vs. Rolls.”  SUR has been well received in the TV, film, sports commercial and gaming world as well as being a fixture on the summer festival circuit. More performances to be announced soon.

Napa Valley’s First Wine History Museum and Tasting Salon

Jean-Charles Boisset Introduces Napa Valley’s First Wine History Museum and Tasting Salon: 1881 Napa

1881 Napa Showcases Napa Valley Wines and History in Historic Victorian Home Adjacent to the Oakville Grocery

Napa Valley’s first wine history museum and tasting salon, is now open. Jean-Charles Boisset, proprietor of Boisset Collection, has created an homage to Napa Valley, with a tasting room that showcases wines from Napa Valley’s distinct sub-appellations, a museum where guests can explore Napa’s rich wine history, an extensive collection of historic wine relics from Europe and the United States and original artifacts from the Early California Wine Trade Archive. 1881 Napa is located in a historic Victorian home built in 1874 next to Oakville Grocery (founded in 1881) in Oakville, California, both of which were purchased by Boisset Collection at the beginning of the year.

“Napa Valley has a powerful place in American wine history and 1881 Napa puts the region in perspective on the world stage,” said Boisset, who grew up in Burgundy, France imbued with a passion for wine and learning as the son of vintners and the grandson of educators. “An extraordinary amount has been accomplished in this enclave in a short amount of time and we want to create a destination that celebrates Napa’s long history and its pioneering founders while exploring Napa’s incredibly diverseterroir in one destination.”

The gateway to Napa Valley, 1881 Napa is must-stop for wine enthusiasts, providing guests the opportunity to discover Napa Valley’s AVAs for the first time, or to explore some of their favorite appellations more deeply. Napa Valley was the first AVA designated in California in 1981 and within the region are 16 sub-AVAs that contain more geological diversity than any other wine region, leading to dramatically different wines within Napa Valley.

Located in a building more than 140 years old that was reimagined by renowned architect Howard Backen, 1881 Napa is next door to Oakville Grocery, the oldest continually operating grocery store in California. The two centerpieces of the space — a 48-light Baccarat crystal Zenith chandelier and a reproduction of an 1895 map of Napa County on canvas hanging from the ceiling — provide a dramatic environment to explore the varied wines of the valley, while displays highlighting the unique stories and soils of each appellation surround the tasting room.

The wine museum in 1881 Napa is open to the public with complimentary visitation. A self-guided tour up to and along the museum’s second-floor mezzanine tells the history of Napa Valley, introduces the founders and influential early pioneers  of the region and presents a robust collection of wine ephemera, including historic winemaking, vineyard, nursery and cooperage as well as displays curated and organized by the Early California Wine Trade Museum featuring local historic wine artifacts from the collections of Dean Walters and John O’Neill. From the mezzanine, guests have an open view to the tasting room below.

Alcoves hold soil samples from the various regions, along with 1881 Napa wines and descriptions of the appellations written by best-selling and award-winning author of The Wine Bible and wine expert Karen MacNeil. MacNeil also helped develop the various tasting options, which include comparative flights such as “Majestic Mountains Versus Plush Valley” and “Is it Cool to be Hot or Hot to be Cool?” as well as an option to “Embark on a Journey Throughout the Valley” by tasting Cabernet Sauvignons from 12 different sub-AVAs. In addition to the site-specific Cabs, guests can enjoy wines from a blend of Napa Valley grapes, including a sparkling wine, Sauvignon Blanc, rosé, Chardonnay, red blend, Merlot and a Cabernet Sauvignon — all wines crafted exclusively for 1881 Napa by Winemaker Thane Knutson to reflect the diversity of Napa Valley. After sampling the broad range of Napa Valley styles, guests can discover which AVAs they like the most and purchase wines from 1881 Napa as well Oakville Grocery.

1881 Napa is located at 7856 St. Helena Highway in Oakville and is open daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Reservations are recommended and can be made here.

Yizzy

Swiftly following the release of his massive new project ‘Welcome To Grime Street’, Lewisham MC Yizzy reveals a new video for ‘Noticing Me Now’.

A unique track from the EP, this is the first to feature vocals by London artist Elshay and lyrically takes a moment to document Yizzy’s battle to be heard as an artist. The video symbolises this with a nightmarish hospital scene in which Yizzy’s restrained on an operating table by apocalyptic figures.

“Noticing Me Now is that special tune I never expected to make. My EP tracklist was done for ages, I took a song off to make room for this song instead. Listen to the song to find out why.”

Having dropped on 7th June as part of the ‘Welcome To Grime Street’ EP on DMY / Livin Legendz, Yizzy celebrated over the weekend with two huge performances at Field Day – where he marked the start of festival season by headlining the Dr. Martens Boot Room Stage – and Parklife, performing for the Reprezent Radio Stage.

The project is also being supported by some of the most influential artists and tastemakers such as Wiley, Logan Sama, Sian Anderson and Charlie Sloth – who invited him in for the long awaited and massively impressive Fire In The Booth debut – shortly after putting on a landmark debut headline show at the O2 Academy2 Islington in May.

With his first full project since 2018’s ‘S.O.S’ EP, Yizzy has returned with a hard statement of intent that delivers everything you want from a grime project in 2019. With millions of streams online and currently featuring as the cover artist for Spotify’s flagship Grime Shutdown playlist, and with 100’s of spins from UK radio and praise from the likes of BBC, Guardian, Red Bull, NME, Complex, FACT, i-D, Clash and more in the past two months alone, Yizzy is surely set to blow…

Volbeat

Today multi-platinum Danish rock band Volbeat debut the music video for their new song “Last Day Under The Sun,” from their upcoming album Rewind, Replay, Rebound. The video was directed by Jakob Printzlau, who has previously directed Volbeat’s videos for “The Devil’s Bleeding Crown,” “Lonesome Rider” “16 Dollars” and “Cape Of Our Hero.” Michael Poulsen, guitarist and lead singer for the band, reveals that the lyrics for the song were inspired by a book about Johnny Cash: “When I read his book, he went through tough times with alcohol and drugs… He walked into a cave to lay down to die. But he wakes up and feels like he has been given a second chance.” Watch the video for “Last Day Under The Sun” here. Check out “Last Day Under The Sun”here.

Volbeat will release their seventh album Rewind, Replay, Rebound, on August 2nd via Republic Records. For the album, Volbeat— Michael Poulsen (guitars/vocals), Rob Caggiano (guitars), Kaspar Boye Larsen (bass), and Jon Larsen (drums) —build upon the distinct, psychobilly, punk-tinged rock ‘n’ roll sound they are known for, while reaching for new creative summits. “The whole point for us going into the studio, is because you still have something to prove — not just for the fans, but mostly for yourself,” says Poulsen. “We would not be able to do this record if it wasn’t for the work we have done in the past. No matter how old the band gets or how many records we do, there is always going to be that signature sound.” Rewind, Replay, Rebound is available for pre-order on all formats here, including a 2 CD deluxe edition, a special deluxe edition box set, and transparent and blue colored vinyl, numbered and limited to 1,000 copies each.

At this point in their already storied career, Volbeat have opened for Metallica, Motorhead and Slipknot, garnered a 2014 Best Metal Performance Grammy nomination for “Room 24” and won multiple Danish Music Awards. For this album, they mine their own personal histories and that of their genre. The song “When We Were Kids” finds Volbeat ruminating on immortality and innocence we all naively experience in our youth, while “Rewind the Exit” and “Die to Live” both explore how the pursuit of perfection can be a hollow goal.

Rewind, Replay, Rebound was produced by long-time collaborator Jacob Hansen and co-produced by Rob Caggiano and Michael Poulsen. This marks the first studio album with Kaspar Boye Larsen on bass. To achieve the album’s sound the band also drew upon a myriad of guests including backing vocalist Mia Maja and the Harlem Gospel Choir, who both return after appearing on 2016’s Seal The Deal & Let’s Boogie. Clutch vocalist Neil Fallon is featured on “Die to Live,” a collaboration that is the result of the bands touring together and a love for the singer’s gruff and powerful style. Raynier Jacob Jacildo (piano) and Doug Corocran (saxophone) of JD McPherson’s band also lend their talents to the song. “Cheapside Sloggers” features a ripping guitar solo by Exodus and Slayer guitarist Gary Holt. Ultimately, Volbeat have not lost their passion to create and progress. It’s that which keeps them hungry — and musically honest on the new album.

The band has also announced the first leg of the Rewind, Replay, Rebound World Tour, with support from Baroness & Danko Jones. This tour will find the band performing in cities including London, Madrid, Berlin, Hamburg and Stockholm (full dates below) and tickets for all dates are on sale now here.

The band has previously announced that they will join Slipknot on their extensive Knotfest Roadshow North American Tour as special guests, alongside Gojira and Behemoth. The 29-date tour will kick off July 26th in Mountain View, CA with additional stops in Salt Lake City, Phoenix, and Austin (full dates below).  Tickets for these dates are on sale now here.

VOLBEAT emerged from Copenhagen in 2001. Since then, they’ve tirelessly clawed their way to hard rock’s upper echelon with endless touring and a string of six beloved full-length albums. Recently, their 2010 album Beyond Hell/Above Heaven, which features hit singles “A Warrior’s Call” and “Heaven Nor Hell,” received RIAA Gold Certification. 2013’s Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies bowed at #9 on the Billboard Top 200 upon release marking the highest U.S. chart entry for a Danish Act since 1997 until the band’s 2016 albumSeal The Deal & Let’s Boogie topped it by debuting at #4. Most recently the band released Let’s Boogie! Live At Telia Parken, a concert film and album documenting their landmark 2017 Copenhagen show in front of 48,250 fans, the largest show a Danish band has ever performed in Denmark.

Vodafone Demonstrates 5G Power

Vodafone demonstrated the power of its 5G network by inviting British YouTube star Tom Cassell (aka Syndicate) to test-run a number of games from Hatch, the cloud gaming platform. The event took place at the Bullring Shopping Centre in Birmingham where Birmingham City University students, studying Games Development and Computer Science, were also invited to compete against Syndicate in games streamed via the 5G network, allowing super quick response times and zero lag.

The UK Gaming industry is worth £3.86 billion, which accounts for more than half of the UK’s entertainment market

Tom Cassell said:

5G is completely changing the landscape when it comes to gaming on the go. The lower latency and the faster speeds available on 5G make it easier to play higher intensity online games such as Fortnite, as well as streaming games in real-time on Hatch.

Prof Mac Sharma, Computer Science Professor at Birmingham University observed the demo and said:

Mobile gaming has increased at least 10% year on year for the last 10 years. It rose 14% last year and with the advent of 5G I predict that it will almost double in the next couple of years.

Hatch is built for the 5G network, allowing gamers to play instantly with no downloads, updates or adverts to interrupt play. Subscribers have access to more than 100 premium mobile games. Vodafone customers who sign up through the VeryMe Rewards app will be able to connect and game against friends.
