OXYGEN: A SECRET WEAPON FOR FITNESS?

Expert Offers Insight into the “Oxygen-Enhanced Exercise” Trend & Shares Breathing Tips to Improve Health & Enhance Your Workout

Have you seen anyone at your gym wearing unusual face masks as they workout? If not, you are sure to encounter this soon and when you do, there is no need for alarm. It’s called oxygen-enhanced exercise, and it’s a holistic approach to fitness that has recently skyrocketed in popularity. Once available and common only with Olympians and pro athletes (like Tiger Woods, Michael Phelps, and Mario Lemieux,) this training method has hit the mainstream and now at-home-exercisers and workout warriors across the country are using it as an all-natural way to gain an athletic advantage.

Oxygen-enhanced exercise is a scientifically proven phenomenon that’s said to benefit the body by reducing the physical stress of exercise, accelerating recovery, helping you sleep, giving you more energy, and improving your metabolism.

According to breathing expert Michael Grant White, oxygen is crucial for peak athletic performance.

“Playing sports, weight-lifting, circuit training, or any other intense physical activity, of course, burns calories and builds muscle, but many people don’t consider the wear and tear it has on their body. Lack of oxygen ages the body at a much greater rate…”

…says White, who has studied breathing over the past 24 years and has seen a rapid rise in interest for oxygen-enhanced exercise. As anti-doping initiatives spread across the country, and athletic drug testing becomes more prevalent, many athletes are turning to oxygen-enhanced exercise as a way to amplify their workouts without the use of drugs, chemicals, surgery, or invasive techniques.

We all know oxygen and exercise go hand-in-hand, but in case you missed this high school biology lesson, here’s a quick recap of the science: During exercise, your muscles have to contract and work harder, which increases their demand for oxygen. The amount needed is much more than you are taking in. Your body first burns the existing oxygen in the red blood cells and when this runs out, the body turns to fermentation for its energy needs. Instead of using oxygen, the muscles convert glucose into lactic acid and this is when fatigue sets in. Oxygen-enhanced exercise leverages the body’s already-existing system for oxygenating the blood before this happens.

If you’re not ready to sport an oxygen mask, you can still enhance your workout through mindful breathing. According to research, proper breathing should be one of your main focuses during exercise. It’s easy to underestimate just how much it impacts our overall health and fitness. Oxygen helps the body maintain pH balance, it increases neuronal energy metabolism in the brain, detoxifies the blood, and strengthens the immune system by killing harmful bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Oxygen also plays a huge role in the recovery process because it helps restore pre-exercise ATP levels and helps your liver break down lactic acid into simple carbohydrates.

“Not all breathing is created equal, there are breathing techniques you can do to enhance your workout…”

…says White who has trained athletes to use proper breathing techniques and seen first-hand how better breathing can help strengthen endurance, lower lactic acid production, and improve stamina for cardio-centric activities (like running, swimming, biking, etc.) In addition, simple breathing techniques can help athletes (at any level of fitness) recover more quickly from high-intensity activities.

In short: better breathing = better health.

Michael Grant White is on a mission to awaken the breathing consciousness of the world. He has insight into the oxygen-enhanced exercise trend and can share breathing tips people can use at home to improve their health and their workout.

10 Driving Tips To Avoid Car Accidents

Even though the laws are very clear, every year the number of deaths and injuries from car accidents is still very high. One of the main reasons for this is because people are failing to buckle up when they hit the road. While the legal system is still working on getting people to put that safety belt on, why don’t we look as some practical ways to avoid accidents altogether.

1. Take Your Time

It can be very exciting to get out on that open highway this summer season, but it is best to take your time. Rather than hurrying to take to the road, take a breather and ease your way into the highway traffic. When starting from a full stop, always take the time to look both directions to make sure the way is clear before merging into traffic.

2. Focus On Your Driving

It is easy to get distracted while driving, especially if you have a car full of people. However, remember that the car is not the place to try to take care of other things. Whether it’s fixing your make-up, fussing at the kids, or adjusting the radio, it takes only a second with your eyes off the road for something to happen.

3. Get In The Right Position

When driving, don’t get in the habit of slouching behind the wheel. When your body is in the right position, you will be alert and attentive to everything that’s going on around you. The right position means you are ready to react should something happen suddenly. Your hands can control the steering wheel better, you can reach the brakes faster, and you’ll be ready to take evasive maneuvers if needed.

4. Be Prepared For Surprises

Even if you have the right-of-way, always proceed with caution. Look both ways before entering into an intersection to make sure that someone is not rushing through a yellow light. When passing semis on the high-way, always keep an eye on the big rig and position your vehicle so that the driver can see you. Never linger in their blind spot.

5. Set Your Music Before You Start Your Engine

Changing your music selection can cause you to take your mind off of what’s important causing an accident. If you find you want to change your music while driving, it is best to pull off the road and make the change than to take your eyes off of your task.

6. Make Sure All Your Mirrors Are In Good Position

Both your side mirrors and your rear-view mirror should be position so that you can see as much of the road behind you as possible. This will ensure that you are fully aware of your surroundings so you can change lanes or merge into traffic safely.

7. Keep An Eye Out For Children

Small children are not always aware of the dangers of an oncoming car. They can easily dart out in front of your car from between parked cars or down driveways. If you’re driving in a residential neighborhood, watch for stray balls, toys, and other signs that children might be playing in the area. Slow down so that you can scan the area completely as you drive.

8. Never Drink and Drive

Even if you’ve only had a small amount to drink, never get behind the wheel after drinking. If you plan to drink at a party, restaurant, or club, always bring another person along to get you back home. If you don’t have someone, take a number of someone or a service you can call. Not only can you prevent an accident that can cause a significant amount of auto body damage, you can save yourself a lot of embarrassment or worse yet, jail time.

9. Keep Vehicle Maintenance Up To Date

Many accidents are caused simply because the vehicle breaks down in a dangerous place. Worn out brakes, bald tires, or even something as simple as a tattered windshield wiper can create hazards on the road in an instant. Always make sure that your vehicle is maintained so it stays in optimum condition.

10. Respect Other Drivers

We all have to share the road so regardless of your mental or emotional state at the time, drive with respect and be courteous to other drivers. This will avoid situations of road rage or offending someone else. If you see anyone who is driving recklessly, report it to the proper authorities and let them handle it. Confronting irate drives can create much more hazards that could jeopardize the lives of other drivers as well.

When you drive safely, your eyes are constantly on the look-out for potential hazards. This will allow you to not only keep yourself safe, but it will also contribute to safe road conditions for everyone.

Pirelli Brings P Zero Tire Number 10,000 For The Ferrari XX Program

During the latest Ferrari Racing Days event in the paddock at the Nurburgring in Germany, a very special tire was on display: the 10,000th Pirelli P Zero created for Ferrari’s XX program. The FXX, FXX EVO, 599XX, 599XX EVO and FXX K (with its latest Evo variant) are the most exclusive cars in the world; derived from roadgoing models and developed for track use. The base cars are already incredibly quick, but circuit racing modifications from Maranello’s engineers then make them even more extreme. The FXX-K Evo, for example, already exceeds 1000 horsepower, and to equip cars with so much power, Pirelli has developed tires specifically designed for each model. In Germany, the number of these special tires made reached 10,000 since 2011: the year that Pirelli became exclusive supplier to the XX program.

DEVELOPED LIKE F1 TIRES

From the very first car in the XX program, the FXX to the most recent FXX-K Evo, the development methodology has changed dramatically. In the beginning, the development process was more traditional, using the P Zero tires created for the Ferrari Challenge one-make series as a starting point for the more extreme FXX tires. For the latest cars, the development process now mirrors the methodology used to make P Zero Formula 1 tires. As well as on-track testing, Pirelli’s engineers have also been able to rely on data acquired from Scuderia Ferrari’s simulator – which is also used at the very highest levels of motorsport.

With the tire developed for the FXX K as a base, Pirelli’s engineers were able to create a tire in fewer than six months that was capable of dealing with the enormous downforce loads generated by the latest Evo aerodynamic package (in excess of 800 kilograms at top speed). At the heart of this latest development path were new P Zero rear tires that now feature a more even contact patch even when the Evo’s rear wing is generating maximum downforce. This helps to ensure excellent stability in terms of more balanced wear and more transparent drop-off, which contribute to more predictable handling and greater safety, regardless of the driver’s experience. Furthermore, the tires for the XX program have to offer very wide working windows, in order to ensure similar levels of performance on very different circuits all over the world, with varying asphalt and often unpredictable weather. The 2019 program, for example, began in February with the sandy corners of Bahrain and will conclude at the up-and-down Mugello circuit in Italy, at the end of October.
