NASHVILLE SONGWRITERS HALL OF FAME NEW INDUCTEES

NASHVILLE SONGWRITERS HALL OF FAME TO INDUCT AMY GRANT, TOBY KEITH, RHETT AKINS, BUDDY CANNON AND JOHN SCOTT SHERRILL

The Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame (NaSHOF) has announced its Class of 2021:  Amy Grant, Toby Keith, Rhett Akins, Buddy Cannon and John Scott Sherrill.  The five will be inducted into the Hall this November, according to an announcement made today by Sarah Cates, chair of the organization’s board of directors, and Mark Ford, its executive director.

The five new inductees-elect will join the 213 previously inducted members of the elite organization when they are officially inducted during the “50/51” Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame Gala on Monday, November 1, at the Music City Center.  Because the organization’s 50th Anniversary celebration was postponed last year, this year’s event will honor two classes in a special double-sized event that will also spotlight NaSHOF’s previously named Class of 2020:  Steve Earle, Bobbie Gentry, Kent Blazy, Brett James and Spooner Oldham.

“Today is one of my favorite days of the year, as we begin our journey to the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame Gala in November with the announcement of our upcoming class,” says Cates. “Nashville has always been the home of legendary songs written by the world’s finest songwriters – and this class is no exception. It’s our great honor today to welcome our class of 2021:  Rhett Akins and Buddy Cannon in the songwriter category; John Scott Sherrill in the veteran songwriter category; Toby Keith as our songwriter/artist and Amy Grant as our veteran songwriter/artist.”

Rhett Akins’ songwriter credits include his own “That Ain’t My Truck,” as well as “Honey Bee” (Blake Shelton) and “It Goes Like This” (Thomas Rhett).  Buddy Cannon’s resume is known for “Set ’Em Up Joe” (Vern Gosdin), “I’ve Come To Expect It From You” (George Strait) and “Give It Away” (George Strait).  John Scott Sherrill’s hits include “Wild And Blue” (John Anderson), “The Church On Cumberland Road” (Shenandoah) and “How Long Gone” (Brooks & Dunn).  Amy Grant popularized many of her own compositions, including “Baby Baby,” “That’s What Love Is For” and “Tennessee Christmas.”  Toby Keith recorded many of his self-penned hits, including “Should’ve Been A Cowboy” “How Do You Like Me Now?!” and “As Good As I Once Was.”

The Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame Gala is one of the music industry’s premier events of the year.  The evening features tributes and performances of the inductees’ songs by special guest artists.  In recent years artists such as Garth Brooks, Luke Bryan, Jimmy Buffett, Ronnie Dunn, Emmylou Harris, Alan Jackson, Little Big Town, Tim McGraw, Thomas Rhett, Blake Shelton, Marty Stuart, Taylor Swift, Josh Turner and Trisha Yearwood have performed at or participated in the event.

The Hall of Fame Gala benefits the nonprofit Nashville Songwriters Foundation.  Starting in September, select public seating may be purchased as available by contacting Executive Director Mark Ford at mail@nashvillesongwritersfoundation.com or 615-460-6556.

Gale Sayers

By Justin Lyons

Hall of Fame running back and Chicago Bears legend Gale Sayers died Wednesday at the age of 77.

Sayers played seven seasons, all as a Chicago Bear, racking up 4,956 rushing yards and 39 rushing touchdowns. He played his final regular season game in 1971, retired in 1972 and became the youngest Hall of Fame inductee in NFL history in 1977 at the age of 34.

The news comes via a statement from David Baker, the president of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

“All those who love the game of football mourn the loss of one of the greatest to ever play this game with the passing of Chicago Bears legend Gale Sayers. He was the very essence of a team player – quiet, unassuming and always ready to compliment a teammate for a key block,” Baker said. “Gale was an extraordinary man who overcame a great deal of adversity during his NFL career and life.”

Nicknamed the “Kansas Comet,” Sayers was an easy selection for the Hall of Fame despite injuries shortening his career.

Current NFL commissioner Roger Goodell also released a statement saying Sayers will be remembered for his inspiration and kindness.

“We send our heartfelt condolences to his wife Ardie and their family. Our thoughts are with his teammates, the Bears organization, the many fans who remember him as a football player and the many more people who were touched by Gale’s spirit and generosity,” Goodell said.

The story of Sayers’ friendship with teammate Brian Piccolo was told in the 1971 film “Brian’s Song,” which starred James Caan and Billy Dee Williams.

Williams, who played Sayers in the film, tweeted, “My heart is broken over the loss of my dear friend, Gale Sayers. Portraying Gale in ‘Brian’s Song’ was a true honor and one of the nightlights of my career. He was an extraordinary human being with the the kindest heart. My sincerest condolences to his family.”

Caan, who played Piccolo, tweeted that he was proud to have known Sayers and also offered his love and condolences to the family.

The New York Times reported in 2017 that Sayers had been battling dementia, but that didn’t stop him from attending the 100th year anniversary celebration of the Chicago Bears in June 2019.

Teammate Dick Butkus, who joined Sayers on stage at that celebration, said,”[I] will miss a great friend who helped me become the player I became because after practicing and scrimmaging against Gale I knew I could play against anybody. We lost one of the best Bears ever, and more importantly, we lost a great person.”

The Bears have added a banner with a photo of Sayers to their website and have changed their Twitter profile picture to Sayers’ famous number 40.

Eric Clapton × Pedrito Martinez – My Father’s Eyes

Today sees widely respected Latin percussionist Pedrito Martinez release a reimagined duet version of Eric Clapton’s My Father’s Eyes” – featuring a collaborative performance with the guitar legend himself. Having the opportunity to work closely with Eric Clapton is the fulfillment of a longtime dream for Pedrito that had its roots at New York City’s Guantanamera restaurant, where Pedrito’s group got started, and where Eric was a frequent guest.

Inspired by getting to know one another, Pedrito had the idea in early 2019 to put together a re-imagined version of Clapton’s deeply personal song “My Father’s Eyes” and send it to the three-time inducted Rock & Roll Hall of Fame member for his thoughts. . Upon receiving the initial recording, Eric Clapton invited the innovative Cuban percussionist to London last year to work together , where he added his own vocals and guitar to My Father’s Eyes and additional guitar contributions to two more tracks that will also be included in Pedrito’s upcoming album, Acertijos, expected to be released in early 2021.

“Pedrito is a genius…working with him has been a revelation to me.” – Wynton Marsalis

PRINCE

The Prince Estate, alongside Pantone Color Institute™, the global color authority, announced today the creation of a standardized custom color to represent and honor international icon, Prince. The (naturally) purple hue, represented by his “Love Symbol #2” was inspired by his custom-made Yamaha purple piano, which was originally scheduled to go on tour with the performer before his untimely passing at the age of 57. The color pays tribute to Prince’s indelible mark on music, art, fashion and culture. The announcement was first made on Refinery29, read here

Prince’s association with the color purple was galvanized in 1984 with the release of the film Purple Rain, along with its Academy Award-winning soundtrack featuring the eponymous song. While the spectrum of the color purple will still be used in respect to the “Purple One,” Love Symbol #2, will be the official color across the brand he left behind.

“The color purple was synonymous with who Prince was and will always be. This is an incredible way for his legacy to live on forever,” said Troy Carter, Entertainment Advisor to Prince’s Estate.

The ‘Purple One’ made a statement and challenged cultural norms through both his well-known music and personal style. In addition to the Oscar, Prince won seven Grammy Awards and a Golden Globe Award for Purple Rain. Both “Purple Rain” and “1999” were entered into the Grammy Hall of Fame, and Prince was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, the very first year he was eligible.

Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute said: “We are honored to have worked on the development of Love Symbol #2, a distinctive new purple shade created in memory of Prince, ‘the purple one.’ A musical icon known for his artistic brilliance, Love Symbol #2 is emblematic of Prince’s distinctive style. Long associated with the purple family, Love Symbol #2 enables Prince’s unique purple shade to be consistently replicated and maintain the same iconic status as the man himself.”

The Estate is in conversation with various partners about collaboration on products that incorporate the custom color.
