When Jean Grey died heroically in Grant Morrison’s epic run of NEW X-MEN, she left a void among her mutant family – and in the world. Marvel is excited to announce the official return of adult Jean Grey in PHOENIX RESURRECTION, with a story by newly exclusive writer Matthew Rosenberg (Secret Warriors, Punisher) and art by superstar artist Leinil Yu (Secret Empire). X-MEN: GRAND DESIGN by Ed Piskor, The Definitive Remix of X-Men History

Marvel Comics and Eisner Award-winning indie cartoonist indie Ed Piskor are teaming up for an unexpected, unprecedented, and uncanny undertaking. Best known for documenting the history of hip hop with the award winning HIP HOP FAMILY TREE graphic novels, Ed Piskor will sample and distill more than 8,000 pages of superheroic storytelling to create a definitive remix of the first 280 original issues of X-Men comic books and 30 years of complicated continuity into one seamless masterpiece of superheroic storytelling. Piskor will write, draw, ink, color and letter all six 40 page issues of X-MEN: GRAND DESIGN, which Marvel will publish over three years as three separate but interconnected mini-series — X-MEN: GRAND DESIGN, X-MEN: GRAND DESIGN-SECOND GENESIS and  X-MEN: GRAND DESIGN-X-TINCTION.

On December 9th, 2017, Marvel will publish the debut issue of X-MEN: GRAND DESIGN. On April 17, 2018, Marvel will collect both issues of X-MEN: GRAND DESIGN, as an oversized paperback collection in the same size and format as HIP HOP FAMILY TREE, and will also include the first issue of X-MEN by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby masterfully recolored by Piskor, and a host of recolored classic pinups. Each X-MEN: GRAND DESIGN trade paperback will feature a classic X-MEN comic book, recolored by Piskor.

Oakland Raider Jared Cook and UnitedHealthcare to Donate for Students at International Community School

Oakland Raiders tight end Jared Cook and UnitedHealthcare will unveil new physical education equipment and other beautification projects at International Community School in Oakland. Cook will join UnitedHealthcare leaders at a school assembly and lead students through relay races.

A $10,000 grant from UnitedHealthcare to Cook’s Dreambuilders program is funding the physical education equipment, which includes basketballs, tetherballs, hula hoops and basketball rims. The donation also will provide three picnic tables and repainting the school’s playground.

Cook’s Dreambuilders program also is partnering with nonprofit Playworks this year to help thousands of kids in the East Bay have access to safe and healthy play during school recess.

X Ambassadors Release Video for “Ahead Of Myself”

“With the “Ahead Of Myself” video, we wanted to take something that everyone takes for granted in music videos and turn that on its head,” says X Ambassadors lead singer Sam Harris. “Instead of lip-synching along to the words, the vocals would be recorded live, in the moment. We hoped to create something vulnerable and imperfect with this video, because that’s what the song is all about – embracing your fears and still diving in head-first.”

X Ambassadors’ latest single “Ahead Of Myself” is currently climbing up the Alternative Radio chart as the band gets ready for their inaugural Cayuga Sound Festival which will take place in their home town of Ithaca, NY on September 23rd.  The festival will feature performances by X Ambassadors, The Roots,  K.Flay, The Knocks, Margaret Glaspy, Jukebox the Ghost, Tei Shi and more. Hundreds Gather at National AIDS Memorial to Dedicate Newly Built Hemophilia Memorial Circle to Honor Lives Lost in Early Days of AIDS Epidemic

Hemophilia community advocates partner with the National AIDS Memorial to remember those lost to HIV/AIDS due to contaminated blood products at the dedication of the new Hemophilia Memorial Circle. 

 

Hundreds of hemophilia advocates and survivors came together at the National AIDS Memorial to dedicate the Hemophilia Memorial Circle, a beautifully designed permanent feature built to forever honor all the lives lost in the hemophilia community to AIDS.

Beth Rice and Zach Kinst (6) at the National AIDS Memorial remember those lost to HIV/AIDS due to contaminated blood products at the dedication of the new Hemophilia Memorial Circle. 

During a touching dedication ceremony, the names of the first loved ones whose names will appear in the Hemophilia Memorial Circle were read aloud and red roses were placed in the memorial in their honor. The names include family members, friends, supporters and loved ones in the Hemophilia community who lost their lives to AIDS. Each name will be inscribed in the memorial over the next month and included as part of World AIDS Day ceremonies on December 1st.

 
The Hemophilia Memorial Circle consists of a new stone circle and surrounding landscape with benches inscribed with the names of those in the hemophilia community who have died from AIDS. It also pays tribute to the courage and activism of those who worked tirelessly on behalf of the hemophilia community to ensure America’s blood supply is safe and that the tragedy they lived through never happens again.

 
“The story of AIDS is a story of darkness, and a story of light — of hope, healing, and gratitude. One of these stories is that of the hemophilia community, which nearly thirty years ago suffered through the loss of thousands of lives,” said John Cunningham, Executive Director of the National AIDS Memorial. “Each name inscribed here will tell a story of a person who was loved, and who was gone too soon. Telling their stories we help future generations understand the past and use those lessons to shape a better tomorrow.”

Hemophilia is a genetic condition that prevents a person’s blood from clotting. Common sites of bleeding are muscles and internal joints and organs, including the brain, which can cause injury and death.

In the 1980s, the hemophilia community’s lifeline was a medicine – clotting factor – derived from a large and diverse blood supply. It was only after people with hemophilia began to be diagnosed with HIV that they realized the blood supply was tainted. Eventually, 90% of people with severe hemophilia were infected with HIV from contaminated factor.

 
Cries for help were met with silence from drug corporations and the federal government. People with the disease were left to fight this fight on their own, and they have served as the guardians of the nation’s blood supply ever since.
 

“Were it not for the strength of so many in both the hemophilia and HIV/AIDS communities who stood up during the worst of times, the breakthroughs we see today in HIV research, prevention, and treatment would not have happened,” said Kimberly Haugstad, President and CEO of the Hemophilia Federation of America. “This memorial will serve as a permanent reminder of the lives that were lost and will pay tribute to the bravery and activism of a community that has suffered so dearly.”

 
This year marks nearly thirty years since the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency (CARE) Act was signed into law, creating the most extensive federal program that provides services exclusively to people living with HIV. Ryan White, a person with hemophilia whose story captivated our nation and the world, never lived to see passage of the new law, but his bravery, courage and heart will never be forgotten. His mother, Jeanne White-Ginder, a prominent activist and supporter of both the Hemophilia and HIV/AIDS Communities, was a strong advocate for the new memorial.

 
“For decades, I have worked side-by-side with brave and dedicated people to tell Ryan’s story and stories of those like him,” White-Ginder said. “The construction of this memorial – inside the National AIDS Memorial, which has already brought hope to so many for decades – is a long overdue acknowledgment of those in the Hemophilia community who lost their lives so tragically.”

 
The completion of the Hemophilia Memorial Circle at the National AIDS Memorial forever brings the hemophilia and gay communities together, bound by their common stories of fear, prejudice, loss and hope.

 
“The tragedy that struck this community is one that cannot be forgotten,” said Val Bias, CEO of the National Hemophilia Foundation. “It is our duty to find a way to provide a place for people to remember those who lost their lives, and this memorial does just that. We are honored to be able to partner with organizations that share this mission.”

 
The National AIDS Memorial partnered with the Hemophilia Federation of America and the National Hemophilia Foundation to build the Hemophilia Memorial Circle, which serves as a place where the community can grieve and remember those lost during the early days of the AIDS epidemic. The French Comics Association (FCA) announces the second year of the French Comics Framed Festival, October 4-9th, with the proclamation that “French Comics Kiss Better!” A week-long festival, day-to-night around NYCC, celebrating the Franco-Belgian comics tradition and boundary-breaking storytelling.

The newly elected incoming President of the Association, Jean Paciulli of Glénat, will lead this embassy of European creators. As he says, “the festival is a huge opportunity to present the French culture of bande dessinée. As the third worldwide comics industry, we bring many years of literary heritage, from beloved characters like Astérix, Tintin and the Smurfs, to new original graphic novels. I’m honored and excited to present the creators on this 2017 tour, whose bande dessinée explore every subject, from adventure stories to social issues, with audacious talent.”

“Francophone comics are having something of a moment,” reports Blastr. At the 2015 San Diego Comic Con, comiXology CEO David Steinberger called for “the ‘French Invasion’ of comics in the English language market.” In Fall 2016, FCA’s inaugural Comics Framed Festival brought “an incredible lineup of talent” (The Beat) to New York City, “showcasing the best of French comics today,” recalled Bénédicte de Montlaur, cultural counselor of the French Embassy. “France has a special relationship with New York, epitomized by the Statue Of Liberty, and revitalized by the French Institute,” reported Bleeding Cool on the inaugural tour.

This October 2017, French comics return! Visit FCA booth #1669 at New York Comic Con (NYCC) 2017 (10/5-10/8), located at the Javits convention center, for book-signings, free prints and swag. Don’t miss an exclusive showing of footage from the upcoming IFC release of the film Death of Stalin, directed by Armando Ianucci and based on the French graphic novel by Fabien Nury. IFC Films will install a movie set-piece on the show-floor for con-goers to take photos with “Stalin!” French creators are featured on over six (6) official NYCC programs, from Heidi MacDonald’s Publishers Weekly presents “European Invasion,” to an adventurous YA line-up joined by Scott Westerfeld, Ngozi Ukazu, and Nidhi Chanani, with educator Adam Kullberg.

The FCA is honored to join NYCC’s new professional programming strand hosted by the American Library Association at the New York Public Library, to present “Bande Dessinée 101” with international cartoonists in discussion, moderated by Meg Lemke. Following, teachers and librarians are invited to join a mixer with comics talent, co-sponsored by First Second Books and the Pop Culture Classroom, where groups will come up with lesson ideas around graphic novels.

Whether or not you join the cosplay crowd daily on the far west side, comics fans won’t want to miss what happens at night. Every evening, venture out to parties and innovative, interactive events and discover how French Comics Kiss Better.

Kick it off on Wednesday night at Columbia University’s Butler Library, learning how international creators went from “DIY to a Career in Comics” headlined by France’s “King of Comics,” Zep, of the internationally bestselling Titeuf series, joined by Americans like self-publishing phenomenon Julia Wertz and “BD expert” Terence Irvins. Thursday evening, enjoy a glass of wine at the Albertine Bookstore as you join in the “Imagined Worlds” sketch party, with live models in fantastical costumes, culminating with a collective pop-up exhibit, where participants can hang their newly created art on the walls of the French Embassy. Friday, head to the Society of Illustrators for a “Comics Cabaret,” theatrical reading of comics by the FCA touring creators, with help from talented friends like Vampire Cowboy director/actor Robert Ross Parker, emcee’d by American cartoonists Katie Skelly and Alex de Campi. The weekend brings the tour to Brooklyn for PEN America’s Lit Crawl on Saturday in Fort Greene. Finally, don’t miss the Kinokuniya bookstore “NYCC after-party” on Monday.

ABOUT THE FRENCH COMICS ASSOCIATION

The French Comics Association brings together many of the major publishers of French comics, including Casterman, Dargaud, Delcourt, Dupuis, Futuropolis, Gallimard BD, Glénat, Le Lombard, Rue de Sèvres, and Soleil. As part of its mission to promote Franco-Belgian comics in the United States and worldwide, the association aims to promote comics translated into English, to support the U.S. publishing industry, and to stimulate cultural exchanges on the basis of literature and visual narratives.

The target audience of the Association’s programming is Americans interested in reading, art, comics and French culture. The association aims to reach a wide audience beyond comics fans and in this framework, partnerships will be developed with various venues to spread the word throughout the USA.

The French Comics Association works in partnership with the Centre National du Livre, the Bureau International de l’Édition, the Syndicat National de l’Édition and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the U.S.

Just one week before embarking on a North American tour, Los Angeles-based band Parade of Lights share a brand new song, “Victorious” [Astralwerks]: LISTEN HERE.

“Victorious” is the second of two new tracks Parade of Lights have shared as a follow up to their 2015 debut album Feeling Electric. The first single,”Touch,” was released earlier this summer. Baeble wrote, “‘Touch’ is charismatic in its hook-packed chorus and instrumentals that make you want to dance.” Idolator agreed, noting its “jaunty synths and jangly guitars” and claiming “if you like Bleachers and WALK THE MOON, this is the song for you,” while Earmilk called it “an ’80s tinged, synth and hook-laden tune that evokes visions of palm tree lined streets and Instagram-worthy sunsets.” “Victorious” and “Touch” are a taste of what’s yet to come from Parade of Lights.

In support of their new music, Parade of Lights are heading out on a North American tour with the Wild Club. Amazon Music and Live Nation recently unveiled their plans to livestream The Roots’ “A Night Of Symphonic Hip Hop” concert in Dallas, TX. TODAY, special guests Erykah Badu, Bilal, Robert Glasper and conductor, Miguel Atwood Ferguson are announced to join The Roots for this special performance backed by the full symphony orchestra the Dallas POPS at The Pavilion Indoor Theater at Toyota Music Factory on October 17th at 7:45pm PT/10:45pm ET via social media platform Twitch.
