Sean 9 Lugo – Immigrant Mentality

Paradigm Gallery is pleased to present Immigrant Mentality, a solo show of new paintings, illustrations, and an installation by artist Sean 9 Lugo. Though Lugo’s work is fueled by his own personal stories and childhood, Immigrant Mentality expresses the shared elements and emotions that Lugo feels are part of the immigrant experience. The back of the exhibition is dedicated to a large-scale installation of an art bodega, composed primarily of handmade “merchandise.” Immigrant Mentality will be on view from July 23–August 22, 2021 with a virtual preview on July 22nd and an in-person opening reception on July 23rd, both at 5:30pm. RSVP is required.

The exhibition is designed to encompass a broad perspective on the culture, community, and values of immigrant families, emphasizing the experience of Hispanic and Latinx immigrants in the United States. The show is centered around 14 new paintings, many of which are based on a trip Lugo took to the Dominican Republic in 2015, including a few directly modeled on photographs the artist took himself. Lugo was inspired by the warmth and selflessness of the people he met living in poverty there. The work El Rey is made on a canvas created entirely of cigar boxes from the Caribbean. On top of the boxes, Lugo painted a Dominican man holding two kittens in his lap; he manifests the man as a king, living his fullest life, relaxing in his own kingdom after years of struggle, finally satisfied.

Immigrant Mentality honors Lugo’s mom, Lulu, who came from Cuba to the United States and worked as a house cleaner to provide a better life for her family; Lulu embodied the drive, work ethic, and generosity that Lugo sees as representative of the “immigrant mindset.” Blue (Lulu’s favorite color) is prominent in the works and represents her presence throughout the exhibition. While the artist’s earlier art reflected the unique circumstances of his life on the streets, this new work is intended to resonate with anyone who has lived as an immigrant or was raised by immigrant parents anywhere in the world.

To harken back to the artist’s early community in New Jersey, a tribute to local neighborhood bodegas, known as papi stores in Philadelphia, will be installed in the gallery, complete with a soda machine, chip rack, toilet paper, and even a wooden bodega cat. Lugo sees the bodega as family—the owners knew him, saw him grow up, and took care of him. By bringing the bodega into the gallery, the artist acknowledges the central and familial role that the space and people have played in his life. To stay true to the bodega experience, all of the pieces within the installation will be reasonably priced. Included are $20 stickers and snack packs to $200 comic books with original art covers. The comic books’ delicate illustrations feature Lugo’s signature style, which playfully reimagines iconic, original comic book figures and covers. The bodega also has a dedicated space for a makeshift shrine, which pays tribute to Puerto Rican astrologer Walter Mercado, and features votive prayer candles and Lugo’s painting, Mucho Mucho Amor.

Immigrant Mentality marks a new chapter in Lugo’s artistic oeuvre as he tackles topics that are both deeply personal and widely shared. In presenting this work, he hopes to honor his past, connect with fellow immigrant families, and teach those who were not raised by and among immigrants about the distinct culture and mindset that comes with leaving your life behind and starting over somewhere new.

Storm Ford Signs with LVRN and Warner Chappel

Artist, singer, and songwriter, Storm Ford has signed a publishing deal with Atlanta-based label Love Renaissance (LVRN) and Warner Chappel.

On the special signing, Ford shares “LVRN just makes sense. It feels right. In some ways I feel like they’ve courted me as a writer; they pushed me creatively & taught me important lessons about this industry whether they intended to or not. And they’ve made me feel welcomed into the family they’ve created. Justice (Baiden) is ‘goated’ for doing those IG Live talent shows. That really changed my life.”

This announcement today stems directly from the connection Storm made with Founder/Head of A&R at LVRN, Justice Baiden, during his Instagram Live songwriter talent search where Storm blew him and the viewing audience away, performing her own acoustic songs in her Grandma’s kitchen. During the beginning of quarantine, as many turned to hosting open mics and competitions on Instagram Live, Storm seized her opportunity and claimed her moment. The rising star dominated Instagram, winning a competition curated by media personality Scottie Beam and performing on the United Masters’ Instagram Live, where she then received an invite to sing on the NBA’s weekly artist competition via the NBA Instagram account. Music mavens T-Pain and Anthony Hamilton, who were selected as judges, praised Ford for her distinct sound and budding success.

In October 2020, after further developing a relationship with the label, Storm was invited to participate in LVRN’s month-long songwriting camp in Atlanta. She knew it was the opportunity she dreamed of to take the next step in her career. With her guitar and two suitcases full of her most important belongings, Storm made the permanent move to Atlanta. Since making the move she has already left her mark on the city, amassing co-signs from the likes of Diddy, London on da Track, MikeWill Made-It, and more.

Home to an array of breakout artists from the likes of Summer Walker and 6lack to Shelly (fka DRAM) and Westside Boogie, Ford makes history as the first and only songwriter signed to the trailblazing label under LVRN’s new publishing partnership with Warner Chappel. No stranger to making waves in the industry for some time now, Ford is most known as an artist, having released two independent projects and is currently recording for her third. Highest Mountain was unveiled in 2018 as a deeply personal project, detailing the peaks and valleys of various loves. Her most recent body of work In the Moment: A Process, was released in 2019 as a unique, soulful collection of voice notes and demos reflecting on growth and the internal Process.

More recently, Storm was invited to the HBO’s hit series’ Insecure season five writing camp under Issa Rae’s music conglomerate Readio.

About Storm Ford

Storm Ford is a 21-year-old R&B/Soul singer-songwriter from Providence, Rhode Island. Her honest and poetic lyricism invites listeners to heal and grow from past relationships, old wounds or just the challenges of life. Her two projects, Highest Mountain, released on Valentine’s day of 2018, and In the Moment: A Process, released in November of 2019, are full of ideas, representing Ford’s journey towards self-love and acceptance of the things we can’t change. Family, love, lust, hurt, and healing are themes that weave their ways through Storm’s music and what has inspired her audience to connect so deeply, not just with her gift, but with Storm as an artist. Storm’s music has saved lives and she hopes to continue that healing work with her next project which she is currently recording for.

Lil Tecca × Aminé – Gametime

Representing a first-of-its-kind collaboration, Republic Records, Warner Bros. Pictures, and Xbox present the music video for “Gametime” by Lil Tecca and Aminé—from the Space Jam: A New Legacy Official Soundtrack. Watch the music video for “Gametime”—HERE.

In celebration of the upcoming film, Xbox invited fans from around the world to submit their ideas for an original Space Jam: A New Legacy–themed video game. The result is “Space Jam: A New Legacy – The Game,” a basketball beat ‘em up reminiscent of classic arcade games of the ‘90’s.

For the “Gametime” music video, Xbox animated Lil Tecca into the newest member of the Tune Squad as a character in the arcade-style game, on-screen. During a key sequence, the multi-platinum New York rapper faces the Goon Squad alongside none other than basketball superstar, LeBron James. In addition to “Space Jam: A New Legacy – The Game,” the music video showcases an exclusive Tune Squad Xbox Wireless Controller and a custom Bugs Bunny Xbox Series S Console. The integration marks a full circle moment for Tecca who started rapping and honing his craft while on Xbox Live.

“Ten years ago if you told me I’d be in an Xbox game with the G.O.A.T. himself, I wouldn’t believe it,” commented Tecca. “This is the biggest dream come true, and I’m so thankful Bron, Xbox, and Space Jam: A New Legacy invited me to the party.”

“We’ve got a rap superstar, an iconic film franchise, and the greatest athlete of this generation in one video,” added Marcos Waltenberg, Director of Xbox Global Partnerships. “We’ve never done anything of this magnitude between sports, music, film, and video games. It’s a watershed moment for Xbox, and we’re honored to be a part of it.”

The “Space Jam: A New Legacy–The Game” launched globally on July 1 exclusively into Xbox Game Pass Perks for a limited time. The game will be available free-to-play for all fans through the Microsoft Store on Xbox on Thursday, July 15.

Harley Davidson Museum Opens New Location

Media and select members of the public, including Peggy Williams-Smith, President and CEO of VISIT Milwaukee, will join Bill Davidson, Vice President of the Harley-Davidson Museum, for a special groundbreaking on Thursday, July 15.

The Harley-Davidson Museum team is thrilled to announce a new addition to its lineup of incredible event spaces on the bucolic, 20-acre campus. When complete, the all-new Garage will boast more than 8,000-square-feet of event space, floor-to-ceiling views of the Menomonee Valley, state-of-the-art audio/visual components and more. The team at 1903™ Events is looking forward to booking special occasions, weddings, corporate events and more. The new space is expected to be complete in spring of 2022.

Media are invited to join the festivities beginning at 4 p.m. on Thursday, July 15 for a uniquely Harley-Davidson “groundbreaking.” Please email Tim McCormick with any questions or to RSVP and/or follow this link for photos and renderings of the new event space.

With the recent return of Bike Nights (including Ladies’ Bike Night on July 22), weekend demos and so much more popping up on campus, no summer is complete without a visit to 6th & Canal in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Below are some of the exhibits and installations you can find at the Harley-Davidson Museum.

Clubs & Competition (on display now)

In the early part of the 20th century, motorcycle culture was a homegrown phenomenon. It grew out of the passion of riders for their evolving sport. The camaraderie that developed around riding and attending competitive events led to the formation of motorcycle clubs that hosted destination rides, family picnics with motorcycle games and other riding competitions.

The newly reinstalled display case in the Clubs & Competition gallery highlights clothing from club members from primarily the 1930s and 1940s. The clothing selections on view include full dress uniforms, shirts, sweaters, jackets and caps, customized by the owners with their club name and logo, and pins or patches indicating membership in the American Motorcyclist Association. The H-D Archives™ collection includes Motorclothes® apparel sold in H-D® product catalogs but also non-H-D produced clothing items that have been proudly customized by riders.

Experience Gallery: Model Year 2021 Harley-Davidson motorcycles (on display July 20)

Always a favorite photo opportunity for riders and non-riders alike, the H-D Museum’s Experience Gallery has been refreshed with five 2021 Harley-Davidson motorcycles –including the all-new Pan America™!

Harley Fox (on display now)

Gail Anderson’s 1986 Softail® Custom motorcycle, “Harley Fox,” built by her partner Bob Burrows, took top prize at the first Ladies of Harley® (LOH) ride-in show during Daytona Beach Bike Week in 1987. With her custom bike and themed riding gear, Anderson presented a striking image that fit the growing visibility and exciting new options for women riders in the 1980s.

Alfonso Sotomayor’s 1957 Model FL (on display now)

The Harley-Davidson Museum is proud to announce its collection has recently grown with the addition of a 1957 Model FL that was ridden by famed Mexican stunt rider and racer Alfonso Sotomayor Canales.

Harley-Davidson’s history in Mexico dates back to at least 1913. In the 1920s, the brand was more frequently spotted throughout Mexico City as the motorcycles proved popular with the local traffic police who would also perform stunts with their Harley-Davidson® bikes. After racing from the 1930s into the 1960s, Sotomayor launched his own stunt riding career by performing the famed “Salto de la Muerte” or Jump of Death. Learn more about Sotomayor’s feats of derring-do and Harley-Davidson’s early entry into Mexico with this new display located in the Custom Culture area.

Off-Road Harley-Davidson (open now)

In the decades before America paved its highways, early riders had to be prepared for all sorts of terrain: sand, clay or dirt – and wandering those makeshift byways were Harley-Davidson® motorcycles. Today, it’s called off-road or adventure touring; back then it was just called riding. Since 1903, Harley-Davidson motorcycles proved their toughness by riding over wooded hills, through stone-choked creek beds and up mountain sides. “Off-Road Harley-Davidson” tells the history of motorcycles designed for rough roads, the people who rode them and the adventures they shared.

Building a Milwaukee Icon: Harley-Davidson’s Juneau Avenue Factory (open now)

A recently recovered cache of architectural drawings includes plans for the original Juneau Avenue facility. The pencil drawings, along with archival photographs, demonstrate the whirlwind pace of the company’s early growth. While building an international business—going from producing just over 1,000 motorcycles in 1909 to manufacturing 27,000 motorcycles in 1920—the company’s Milwaukee factory experienced near-constant expansion. Construction through this relatively brief period created the buildings that today, a century later, are still the proud home of Harley-Davidson.

“Building a Milwaukee Icon” provides a snapshot of Harley-Davidson’s formative years and illustrates a chapter of Milwaukee history when the city was known as the “Machine Shop to the World.”

Google Arts & Culture, “Not Just a Knucklehead” (available now)

The first new motorcycle of the Great Depression was a bit of a gamble for Harley-Davidson. Introducing what would eventually be known as the “knucklehead” engine, the 1936 EL was a pivotal model that continues to influence H-D® motorcycles today.

About the Harley-Davidson Museum

Discover culture and history through stories and interactive exhibits that celebrate expression, camaraderie, and love for the sport at the Harley-Davidson Museum. A visit to the H-D Museum is an experience that will stay with you for a lifetime. With an unrivaled collection of Harley-Davidson® motorcycles and memorabilia, a 20-acre, park-like campus, and a calendar full of activities, the H-D Museum is one of Milwaukee’s top tourist destinations for visitors from around the globe. Make your plans to visit the Harley-Davidson Museum at H-DMuseum.com.

Luciela via Carlos Hernandez for use by 360 Magazine

Luciela

“Luciela,” an incredibly moving short film about a young girl who gets reminded how her family has been torn apart on her favorite holiday, premiered today on the PBS Short Film Festival running from July 12-23. The film, directed by Erin Ploss-Campoamor, is available now on all PBS and station digital platforms, including PBS.org, YouTube and the PBS Video App and is a co-production of Mare’s Hoof Production and Latino Public Broadcasting (LPB).  Click HERE to watch Luciela. The short tells the story of a fiercely independent Mexican-American girl who loves the 4th of July because every year her Papi throws a huge party. He does one of the best firework shows in Lincoln Heights, their immigrant neighborhood in Los Angeles which delights all. But this year he can’t, because he’s been deported. So Luciela decides to set off a few sparks of her own.

“I first conceived of this story a few years ago. A friend invited me to her home in Lincoln Heights, to watch the fireworks on the 4th of July. If you are not familiar with Lincoln Heights, it is a mostly Latinx, mostly immigrant neighborhood, up in the hills of Los Angeles,” shared filmmaker Erin Ploss-Campoamor. “It felt especially poignant that I was experiencing this in a predominantly Latinx neighborhood, knowing that immigrant rights were actively under threat and xenophobia was on the rise. I loved that this community was celebrating our country’s Independence Day so loudly and proudly. Filling the sky, saying, “See us! Hear us! We are here! From that experience, the seeds of this story were planted.”

“Luciela” represents the experiences of many children whose families live in the shadow of deportation,” shares Sandie Viquez Pedlow, Executive Director of Latino Public Broadcasting. “Sadly, this is an unfortunate reality in our country. Latino Public Broadcasting is proud to work with Erin Ploss-Campoamor to bring films such as “Luciela” to the forefront and hopefully create a better understanding of these divisive issues and the consequences to our young children.”

The festival features 25 short-form independent films presented in six categories: culture, family, humanity, identity, race and society. And for the first time in the festival’s history, all 25 films will be presented in virtual reality, accessible on any VR device. Audiences can also use a computer without a headset and still look around 360 degrees.

About The PBS Short Film Festival

The PBS Short Film Festival is part of a multiplatform initiative to increase the reach and visibility of independent filmmakers from across the country and amplify the voices of diverse content creators. Since its inception in 2012, hundreds of films celebrating love, acceptance, family, strength, equality, friendship, loyalty and more have been presented under the festival’s banner. The 2021 festival carries the tagline “A Decade of Being Seen” as a reminder that the festival has always striven to amplify the untold stories of America.

Starting at midnight on Monday, July 12, audiences can watch and share all 25 films. In addition, a panel of nine jury members will select their favorite film of the festival for the Juried Prize. Jury members are respected professionals in independent film and public media and were invited by PBS to participate.

About Gryffin

Born Dan Griffith, Gryffin got his start in music as a classically trained pianist and guitarist and also played in several bands. After receiving an electrical engineering degree from the University of Southern California, he pursued a path in music production, drawing equally from his carefully honed musicality and edgy ingenuity. Gryffin made his breakthrough in 2016 with two singles showcasing his melodic take on dance music: “Heading Home” ft. Josef Salvat (which shot to #1 on Spotify’s US and Global Viral charts) and the Bipolar Sunshine collaboration “Whole Heart.” In addition, his 2017 smash single “Feel Good”—with Illenium and featuring Daya— peaked at #18 on the Dance/Mix Show Airplay charts. Gryffin’s major triumphs also include “Tie Me Down” ft. Elley Duhé (which hit #2 on the Spotify US Viral Chart and #9 on the Global Viral Chart), “Remember” ft. Zohara (which garnered 6.5 million streams in its first few weeks and earned support from Tiesto, who featured the track on an Instagram story), and “All You Need to Know” with SLANDER ft. Calle Lehmann (a gold-certified smash that’s now surpassed 100 million streams). Arriving in October 2019, Gryffin’s debut album Gravity quickly climbed to #1 on Billboard’s Dance/Electronic Albums chart.
