Polestar Hot Wheels Design Contest 2024

Polestar, the Swedish electric performance car brand, has announced the winner of its 2024 Design Contest. This year’s contest, held in collaboration with the legendary automotive brand Hot Wheels, invited contestants to submit designs inspired by its renowned 1:64 scale and Polestar’s distinctive design language.

Shashank Shekhar, a professional designer from India, won first prize for his rugged off-roader, “Polestar TRX.” The concept, with its exaggerated proportions and sleek surfaces, presents a bold interpretation of Polestar’s normally subtle design philosophy. The design becomes the first Polestar to be included in Hot Wheels toy car series, with the die-cast collectable available for consumers in the summer of 2025.

“I’m thrilled to win. This will be the first design in my career to be produced, so it’s a big deal for me. I never thought that someday, something I have created would end up as a Hot Wheels car. It has been a great journey, and I’ve had an amazing time so far. Something like this gives you a lot of confidence as a young designer,” said Polestar Design Contest winner Shashank Shekhar.

For more than 50 years, Hot Wheels has driven automotive performance and design; driving car culture for fans of all ages. Hot Wheels at its core is about accepting challenges and pushing design limits to create authentic die-casts that reflect car culture. This special edition of the Polestar Design Contest opened the door for designers to reach new heights in creativity and innovation, further linking the two powerhouse brands.

Polestar has established a rich history in supporting and collaborating with aspiring student and professional vehicle designers through its design contests. From the start, the connection with the Polestar Design Community provides guidance and encouragement for all entrants before the Polestar Design team engage in one-to-one coaching with the shortlisted finalists to refine their designs towards final selection.

Italy’s Powei Chen was awarded the runner-up prize for his colorful “Cyber Shaker,” which nods to both past and present with its eye-catching cyberpunk design. Roman Moor’s classic Le Mans submission from Germany received an honorable mention for his “Polestar Track Toy” concept, which impressed the four-judge panel that included representatives from Polestar and Mattel.

Now in its fourth edition, the Polestar Design Contest is an exciting opportunity for both professional and student designers to showcase their visions of automotive design. Since the first contest, the competition has highlighted top talent around the world, with many of the students going on to work for the Polestar Design team or in the wider professional design industry.

This year’s unique partnership with Hot Wheels encouraged participants to push their creativity even further, resulting in some of the most exciting concepts to date.

“We were looking for innovative ideas with this theme, and the submissions definitely exceeded our expectations. We saw some of the most daring designs to date. I can’t wait to see what the ‘Polestar TRX’ collectible will look like in real life,” says Juan-Pablo Bernal, Head of Interior Design at Polestar and curator @polestardesigncommunity Instagram account.

The 2024 contest attracted over 1,200 participants from around the globe, making it one of the largest editions of the annual competition to-date. Judges were instructed to seek out designs that reflected the playfulness and vibrancy of the Hot Wheels brand while still incorporating elements of Polestar’s signature minimalist design aesthetic.

“It was a pleasure for Hot Wheels to collaborate with Polestar for this innovative design contest. This year’s winner accepted the challenge and was inspired by both Hot Wheels and Polestar, bridging the two brands together,” says Ted Wu Senior Vice President and Global Head of Design of Vehicles and Building Sets at Mattel. “We are looking forward to seeing the ‘Polestar TRX’ in a 1:64 scale and welcoming this die-cast to be included in our Hot Wheels history.”

MOBY – ALL NEW REMIXES

Acclaimed electronic musician, producer, and activist Moby shares all-new remixes with two disc, 58-track album, always centered at night remixes out now via Mute alongside “wild flame (dark1 remix)” featuring Danaé. The whopping LP comes following Quiet Home DJ Mix and a sold out September 2024 EU/UK tour celebrating 25 years of Play.

Moby opens up the sheer scope of the acan album project with a meaty 58-track remix album. The latest single, out today, is the cosmic “dark1” remix of “wild flame” which finds Danaé delightful vocals shimmering over loose congas, spacey synths and intricate rhythms. The new, re-worked tracks see Moby breathe new life into the 2023 original body of work. Thrilled to share the jam-packed project, Moby says, “I felt that the collaborations on ‘always centered at night’ were each so special that I wanted to create remixes to give the vocals as many sonic backgrounds as possible.”

Even by Moby’s standards, always centered at night is a bit special. The album features 13 collaborations in all, from names one might recognize to others listeners undoubtedly will come to recognize. Lead single “dark days” was recorded with acclaimed soul-jazz singer-songwriter Lady Blackbird, a defiant, rhythmic work propelled by her alluring, deep vocals and earnest soul. Other collaborators include serpentwithfeet on the achingly beautiful “on air,” and Benjamin Zephaniah on the propulsive, break- beat driven “where is your pride?,” a spoken word with a powerful message delivered in the late dub poet’s characteristically warm Handsworth burr. “As a vegan activist, and as a wise and compassionate man, Benjamin inspired me for many years,” says Moby. “I hope that ‘where is your pride?’ honors his legacy and also draws people’s attention to his life, work, and principles.”

Other wonderful voices on always centered at night include Sudanese, Netherlands-based chanteuse Gaidaa on “transit,” London based Burundian royal refugee J.P. Bimeni, and Kingston raised, London based Aynzli Jones.

Always centered at night–the album–is the continuation of the project of the same name that Moby announced in 2022. He saw this project as a similar service to the idiosyncratic New York record shops that he frequented in the late 1980s, where he’d hear something recondite and exciting and it would open up whole new worlds. always centered at night was his way of working with special writers and vocalists to make songs inspired by the spirit of musical discovery.

In his pursuit of new sounds, Moby has become something of a collector of voices. He’s a connoisseur of the timbre and texture of human vocal chords, whether sampling artists like Bessie Jones, Vera Hall or Boy Blue on Play, or working with superstars like David Bowie, Ozzy Osborne and Britney Spears; “I’m always looking. Sometimes it’s about going on YouTube. Sometimes it’s Spotify. Other times, it’s just walking around Lower Manhattan going to karaoke places, where I’ve actually found a couple of singers. It’s this constant process of looking for voices, and getting excited and inspired when I find a wonderful voice.”

These are often personal songs, and the personal is the political, as is the border-defying nature of the work. Moreover, they’re crepuscular, conceived at twilight, with many of the styles of the last 30 years in electronic music coming to the fore, such as the trip-hoppy “we’re going wrong” featuring Brie O’Banion, the broken beat, almost drum ‘n’ bass influenced “medusa” (with the aforementioned Aynzli Jones), or the Latin house of “feelings come undone” with Raquel Rodriguez.

Moby is a multi-platinum-selling, multi-award-winning singer, songwriter, producer, author, and animal rights activist. He has been a vegan and vegan activist for 35 years and last year released his directorial debut Punk Rock Vegan Movie via his production company Little Walnut, a passionate and stylistically idiosyncratic look at the ongoing relationship between the worlds of punk rock and animal rights. It includes interviews with some of the biggest names in punk and rock history.

The expansive, fresh remix album, always centered at night remixes–complete with two discs and 58 tracks–is out now via Mute. Keep up with all things Moby on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

With its razor-sharp focus on streetwear, music, and pop culture, Complex magazine was the definitive destination for readers who craved the latest insights on fashion, music, and everything that mattered in the world of convergence culture, drastically shifting the landscape of youth culture.

After a hiatus since 2016, the beloved publication is making its long-awaited return, complete with its famed dual sided flip covers) this week at the Complex Miami x VERDY pop-up at the Faena Forum for Miami Art Week.

In the Billie Eilish cover feature, the global star discusses:

  • Her experiences with existentialism – “There could have easily been a world without me, but since I’m in the world, I am going to try to help people and be impactful and help change things that have been in place for so long and are so outdated.”
  • The struggles of making her latest album, HIT ME HARD AND SOFT – “Oh my God, it was horrible. I learned a lot, though, and I had a good time with my brother. The fact that it was so difficult to make is good, honestly, because it shows that we can do it, even when we’re going through it.”

Lil Baby – Touchdown

GRAMMY-Award winning superstar Lil Baby (Quality Control Music/Motown) continues his sheer dominance with the release of his new video “Touchdown.” Directed by Gerald Victor, Lil Baby proves why he is an elite playmaker inside and outside the booth, playing the quarterback role and leading his team to a triumphant victory. Whether he’s dodging tackles on the field or haters in the streets, Baby’s commanding presence and seamless execution as a field general is why he’s among the game’s top artists. “I’m the one, ain’t nothing two about me / I’m that n—a, ain’t nothing you can do about it,” he raps on the hard-hitting beat produced by Wheezy.

This isn’t surprising as Baby’s searing run as a perennial features artist remains his calling card after churning out hits for Central Cee (“BAND4BAND”), Future and Metro Boomin’ (“All My Life”), Rod Wave (“F–k The Fame”), further solidifying his status as one of the all-time leaders on the Billboard Hot 100.

Last month, Baby teased the forthcoming collaborators on his highly anticipated album, including Future, Young Thug, Rod Wave, and more. He also kept his fans on high alert with more buzzy and noteworthy collaborations. Billboards in Los Angeles, New York, Houston, Atlanta, and Chicago have read: “Whatever Wham Say Goes,” referring to Young Thug’s famous tweet from last June.

With Baby shifting the focus back to himself, he’s readying the release for his forthcoming album WHAM – his first in two years since his platinum-selling No. 1 album It’s Only Me.
