Q×A with Jamaine Ortiz

Jamaine “The Technician” Ortiz, an up and coming, 23-year-old boxer, is making his name in the world of boxing. After growing up in Worcester, Massachusetts, the young boxer turned pro in 2016. His amateur record is 100-14 and he has already won many awards for his skill.

During the recent Mike Tyson vs. Roy Jones Jr. fight that was shown on pay-per-view, Ortiz was victorious over Sulaiman Segawa of Silver Spring, Maryland. After scoring a technical knockout in the last 10 seconds of the seventh round, Ortiz gained the WBC USNBC Silver lightweight title. This was his first fight outside of New England and he certainly made himself known in the fighting community. After winning this fight, Ortiz jumped from 76th to 44th in the world for the lightweight division. If he keeps winning, Ortiz is predicted to fight for a major world title by late 2021.

360 Magazine sat down with Ortiz to ask him questions about his professional career, personal life and future.

What was your upbringing like? Was there always a focus on athletics?

I started boxing at seven years old, and I was always an athletic kid, playing sports and outside.

Where did you learn to box?

I learned how to box at the Boys & Girls Club of Ionic Ave.

Why boxing?

I use to get into fights as a kid, I like that its a one on one sport I don’t have to rely on anyone. Over time, I noticed I was winning a lot and kept it going.

Who are your role models, boxing or otherwise?

My role model was my coach Carlos Garcia.

You’re currently the Undefeated World Boxing Youth World lightweight champion. What does this accomplishment mean to you?

I’m actually the former Youth World lightweight champion due to my age since I turned 24 last April, currently, I hold the WBC USNBC Silver lightweight title. The accomplishment is just a stepping stone, I have far more to go and I understand its a process and this is part of the process.

Your nickname is ‘The Technician’ where does this come from?

A technician is a person skilled in an art or craft by dictionary standards and when it comes to boxing, and me being a carpenter, I’m now an active trader. It was a perfect fit since everything I do, including things in my personal life, I’m technical about it. So it’s a name that reflects more than just boxing.

You’ve been boxing competitively for more than a decade. How have you evolved during that time, technique-wise and also personally?

Time is the mother of greatness, practicing repeatedly overtime is only natural; I’m going to get better.

How has your career been impacted by COVID-19 and 2020?

Luckily I was able to get a fight right before the impact of covid came I didn’t get to fight as much as I normally would. I probably would have had about 4 fights in a year but I had two with the last one being a great exposure bout.

Tell us about your interests outside of boxing.

I enjoy nature and I spend most of my time with family. Always working on self-development, a lot of stocks, and trying to find real estate deals.

Do you still have Olympic aspirations? What are your future boxing goals?

Olympics of boxing is an amateur sport but recently I think in 2016, they allowed pros to compete but it is heavily dominated by amateurs. In the next year, I see myself becoming World Champion at the lightweight Division and reaching for that pound for pound list.

What is your go-to move in a fight?

Not sure, probably switching from orthodox to southpaw.

What makes you unique as a boxer?

My ability to switch stances easily and my technique.

GGG x Canelo Workout

By Reid Urban x Anthony Sovinsky x Vaughn Lowery

Gennady Golovkin, known to many as “GGG”, is getting ready for his sequel fight against Canelo.

On Sunday, August 26, Golovkin held an open workout at Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles, where fans and the media could get an up-close view of GGG as he trains. It was also a chance to see what fans can expect for the fight.

Years ago, GGG believed he was the best fighter and that he could knock out everybody that comes into the ring with him. These days, he’s not sure whether he’s number 2 or number 3 behind Floyd Mayweather. Right now, however, he’s focused on being in the ring with Canelo.

Going into this fight, GGG has won all 37 of his previous fights, including 32 by knockout.

Meanwhile, for Canelo, he found himself in hot water for his failed drug tests that postponed his rematch with GGG. Now that the fight is on, he said there was no attempt to gain an unfair advantage over Golovkin for the sequel. He even admitted that GGG’s accusations for his intentional cheating got under his skin. He’s been channeling that energy into his training, hence his extreme intensity and speed during the workout.

Cannel hopes to make a statement over GGG and will be looking for the opportunity to end the fight as soon as possible. It remains to be seen how he’ll do that and be able to gain the advantage.

Last year, Golovkin teamed up with The Chivas Fight Club, an initiative launched to inspire the fighting spirit within individuals all across the country. It’s much like the spirit of GGG, who continues to #FightForIt as he gears up to face Canelo again next month on September 15.

The live broadcast of “Canelo vs. GGG 2,” presented by Golden Boy Promotions, GGG Promotions and Fathom Events, is set for Sept. 15, 2018 at 8:00 p.m. ET/ 7:00 p.m. CT/ 6:00 p.m. MT/ 5:00 p.m. PT/ 4:00 p.m. AK / 3:00 p.m. HI.  Tickets can be purchased online at www.fathomevents.com/events/canelo-vs-golovkin or at participating theater box offices.

Honoring Mandela in South Africa

2018 is a momentous year for South Africa with the Nelson Mandela Centenary marking what would have been 100 years since the iconic leader’s birth.

Officially July 18, 2018 – Mandela Day – marks this historic milestone as throughout the nation, and across the world, people celebrate South Africa’s first black President who was an inspirational anti-apartheid revolutionary and one of the greatest human rights advocates the world has ever seen. This year, South African Tourism invites US travelers to explore his legacy.

In Mandela’s honor, national celebrations will see a series of high-profile events and memorials. In New York, the One World Trade Center’s spire will be lit with the colors of the South African flag to honor the occasion.

On July 17, a day before Mandela Day, former US president Barack Obama will deliver the 16th Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture in Johannesburg. The theme will be “Renewing the Mandela Legacy and Promoting Active Citizenship in a Changing World,” and will honor the centennial of Mandela’s birth.

In other recent news, The Global Citizen Festival will expand from its regular location in New York City to Johannesburg for a special Mandela 100 edition this December, with Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Ed Sheeran and Chris Martin as headliners in honor of his legacy.

In Cape Town’s City Hall, a life-sized statue of Madiba will be unveiled on 24th July in the place where he had his first speech upon release from his imprisonment in Robben Island.

Internationally, the world’s largest musical tribute will also take place on Mandela Day through a series of charitable concerts held live across the world in support of improving literacy among poverty- stricken children. This important musical tribute is organized by Mandela Concerts with the goal of raising millions of dollars towards various projects including building 100 new library units in South Africa’s most vulnerable schools, developing a high school skills program, and providing 200 Toddler Trolley library programs for 5 to 6 year-old South African children by 2021.

Travelers interested to follow in Mandela’s footsteps can download Madiba’s Journey app. South African Tourism, in collaboration with the Nelson Mandela Foundation, recently re-launched the app to include 100 historic landmarks and sites that influenced Mandela’s life. From the Eastern Cape to Johannesburg to Cape Town and beyond, the app allows users to customize their own itineraries and helps guide them through key landmarks, offering context, photos and curated audio narration about Mandela’s life and the 27 years he spent as a political prisoner. A few notable landmarks are highlighted below:

The Eastern Cape: Explore Nelson Mandela’s birthplace – an area of outstanding rugged beauty with pristine coastline, virgin bush and subtropical forests.

Robben Island: Tour the jail cell where Nelson Mandela spent 18 years of his life, through the eyes of those who experienced it first-hand. Many tours are led by ex-political prisoners.

Constitution Hill in Johannesburg: Formerly used as a prison, it was here where hundreds of political prisoners were held, including Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo. Constitution Hill is now a living museum and home to South Africa’s Constitutional Court.

The Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg: Acknowledged as the pre-eminent museum in the world dealing with 20th century South Africa, the museum tells the apartheid story.

KwaZulu-Natal: Visit this province to see the Nelson Mandela Capture Site. After being on the run for 16 months, Madiba was captured and arrested here in August 1962.

Voting Line Sculpture in Port Elizabeth: A tribute to the thousands of South Africans who participated in the nation’s first democratic elections in 1994.

South African Tourism encourages travelers to celebrate, honor and explore the legacy of Mandela through Mandela themed travel packages.

To book a Nelson Mandela inspired trip, speak to your travel agent or advisor. As a sample, South African Airways Vacation is currently offering a 10-day Mandela’s Journey to Freedom which gives visitors a first-hand, cultural experience following his footsteps as founding father of the New South Africa. Starts at US $2,999* per person. *Terms and conditions apply*

GGG Does It Again

By: Rana Salloom and Maria Campos

As the sun set over the horizon in Southern California, the energy at the StubHub Center was enveloped by excitement as fans chanted, “Triple GGG, Triple GGG.” This sensational boxer is the middleweight Champion of the World and tonight’s fight against Martirosyan is a continuation of all his hard work. Despite the cancelation of his scheduled fight against Canelo Alvarez, that was set for Cinco de Mayo. Being the peoples champ, his team and The Chivas Fight Club, decided to set an unprecedented fight against Martirosyan to give his fans the fight they deserve. This fight was not only for his fans, but also a champaign to inspire individuals to have a fighting spirit.

Attendees were treated to an aged-whiskey tasting at the Tunnel Club hosted by The Chivas Fight Club. After the VIP pre-party, attendees congregated over to the stadium where the boxing tournament was being held. The crowd waited in anticipation as the women’s tournament ended and the officials set up for the main event, Triple GGG vs Martirosyan. Fans cheered as the announcers spoke over the loud speaker and introduced the fighters onto the stage. Martirosyan walked into the ring first as Triple GGG followed.

The action began, as Triple GGG gave his opponent, Martirosyan, jabs to the upper and lower body. The audience was in awe as Martirosyan responded with a right-left hook. This did little to nothing to Triple GGG as he responded by hitting his opponents midsection. This weakened Martirosyan as he moved along the ring. After a few more hits to and from the upper and lower body Triple GGG went for the jugular and knocked out Martirosyan in the second round.

Fans chanted with joy as the middleweight Champion of the World retrieved to his throne and proved once again why he is a force to be reckoned with.
