Historic Underground Railroad Marker Unveiled in Niagara

The Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Commission (Commission) and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation (NYSOPRHP) proudly unveiled a Historic Marker designating the former site of the Cataract House at a press conference on Thursday morning at the park area across from Red Coach Inn, 2 Buffalo Ave, Niagara Falls, NY 14303.

The importance of the Cataract House as the center of Underground Railroad activism in Niagara Falls cannot be overestimated. The African American waiters who worked as Underground Railroad agents made this site one of the most important Underground Railroad nodes in the entire nation. Famous cases included a failed rescue attempt in 1847 and the successful escapes of Cecilia Jane Reynolds (1847), a woman named Martha (1853), and waiter Patrick Sneed (1853). John Morrison, head waiter at the Cataract House, often ferried people across the river himself.

The Cataract House burned down in 1945 and was demolished in 1946. The Historic Marker for the former location of the hotel has been funded by a grant from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation.

“This Historic Marker will now designate a location that was important not only to our local heritage, but our national history as well,” said Saladin Allah, Visitor Experience Specialist, and Community Liaison at the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center, operated by the Commission. “Outside of our community, people may not know much about Niagara Falls beyond the Falls themselves. This Marker will help others realize the vital role our region played in the Underground Railroad and the rich history of Niagara Falls’ Black community. We hope that our representation of this site will help us continue to learn from the past so we can work toward a more just, equitable future.”

Congressman Brian Higgins agreed that the Marker represents an important aspect of the history of our city and country.

“The Cataract House was a pivotal station along the Underground Railroad and its story is told beautifully and poignantly through the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center,” he said. “This Historic Marker further shares the story of the powerful network of ‘conductors’ here in Niagara Falls who bravely helped people escape slavery along the road to freedom.”

The event was attended by several community leaders and local political officials, including City of Niagara Falls Mayor Robert Restaino.

“The Cataract House is an important part of the history of our City,” Mayor Restaino said. “It continues to show the significant impact of Niagara Falls in our national story. We appreciate the work of the Commission and NYSOPRHP in designating this Historic Marker for the Cataract House.”

Speakers at the event included:

  • Saladin Allah
    • Visitor Experience Specialist & Community Liaison at Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center
    • Descendant of freedom seeker Josiah Henson
  • Douglas J. Perrelli, Ph. D., RPA
    • Chair of NYS Board for Historic Preservation
    • President, New York Archaeological Council (NYAC)
    • Director, Archaeological Survey
    • Clinical Assistant Professor, Anthropology, University at Buffalo
  • Mark Mistretta, RLA
    • Western District Director, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation
  • Assemblyman Angelo Morinello (R, C, I-Niagara Falls)
  • Robert M. Restaino, Mayor of Niagara Falls

Following the unveiling, visitors were invited to walk in the footsteps of freedom seekers from the hotel site to the brink of the Niagara River. For media files, visit here.

About the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Commission

The Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Commission Center manages the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Area, a part of the NYSOPRHP Heritage Area Program. The Commission also operates the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center, an award-winning experiential museum located inside the former 1863 U.S. Custom House attached to the Niagara Falls Amtrak Station. The Commission encourages and fosters the discovery, illumination, and celebration of the rich heritage of the Underground Railroad and the Abolitionist movement throughout the City of Niagara Falls and its environs. The center, which opened in May 2018 after 11 years of planning, is located inside the former 1863 U.S. Custom House attached to the Niagara Falls Amtrak station. The center sits adjacent to the location of the former International Suspension Bridge, a point of crossing for many freedom seekers including Harriet Tubman.

The Heritage Center preserves the historic role of the people of Niagara Falls in facilitating freedom for the oppressed. What is protein and why do you need it?

Everyone’s heard of protein. But do you know exactly what it is and why we all need it? Let us examine protein more closely to get to the bottom of things.

What is Protein?

Quite simply, proteins are essential nutrients that the human body requires. They are part of the building blocks of tissue. Protein can also serve as a source of energy. Every human being needs protein if they are going to stay healthy and active.

Why You Need Protein

Every cell in your body contains protein. Therefore, you need protein in your diet to stay healthy. It helps your body to repair cells and create new ones. Protein also plays a vital role in the growth and development of children, teenagers, and pregnant women– but protein is crucial for everyone. For one thing, it helps the process that fuels your energy by carrying oxygen through your blood. Protein helps your body make antibodies to fight off illnesses and infections. When you do not have enough protein in your diet, it can cause health issues like muscle loss.

The Benefits of Protein Powders

While you can get protein from many foods, lots of people choose to take nutritional supplements – like protein powder – to ensure they are getting the right dose of protein they need to stay strong and healthy. Protein powder has many benefits. It helps to build muscle, repair tissue, and could even aid in weight loss. There are lots of different types of protein powders available, but they tend to either fall into the dairy-based or a plant-based category. One of the best types of protein powders you can buy for building muscle and losing weight is grass fed whey protein, which contains all of the essential amino acids. Whey protein is also absorbed quickly in comparison to other types of protein powders.

The Role of Amino Acids

When you eat foods containing protein, it is are broken down into small parts called amino acids through digestion. Your body needs amino acids to maintain good health. There are three types of amino acids:

·       Essential amino acids, which cannot be made by your body and therefore must be supplied by food or supplements. It is best to intake essential amino acids throughout the course of the day, rather than at just one meal.

·       Nonessential amino acids, which are made by your body.

·       Conditional amino acids, which your body requires in times of illness and stress.

Protein Foods

The protein that your body needs can primarily be sourced from animal products, like meat, fish, eggs, and milk. Protein can also be sourced from plant products, like beans, legumes, soy, and some grains. Here are three of the best food sources for amino acid-rich protein:

Seafood

Seafood is one of the best sources of protein because it is usually low in fat. Some fish can have higher fat contents than others, but it is almost always the healthy kind of omega-3 fatty acids. Even fish like salmon, which has a higher fat content, are good for you and a great source of protein.

White Meat

To get protein without damaging fat, avoid dark meats and stick to white meat, like poultry. Also, remove the skin of poultry before eating because it is full of saturated fat.

Soy

Soy is not only a fantastic source of protein, it can also help lower your cholesterol. In fact, just fifty grams of soy protein each day can lower your cholesterol by 3%. Soy can also be good for your heart’s health.

How to Handle Property Damage Claims After a Natural Disaster

Unfortunately, natural disasters can strike at any time. Whether your property is damaged by a storm, flood, wildfire, hurricane, or another natural event, it is important that you get yourself and your family to safety as soon as possible. Once the disaster has passed, you can focus on clearing up the aftermath and filing a claim with your insurer. To help you be prepared, here is a look at how to handle property damage claims after natural disaster has struck.

Contact a Lawyer

Even when you are insured for property damage caused by a natural disaster, unfortunately, insurance companies do not always payout, even when you hold a valid policy. So, as well as contacting your insurer after being affected by a natural disaster, you should contact a law firm that has experience in dealing with property damage claims. Law firms like Sibley Dolman Gipe in Florida know how to deal with insurance companies to help you get the money and protection you require after facing an awful natural disaster.

Contact Your Insurer

If your home insurance policy covers things like damage caused by floods, hurricanes, and fires, you will be able to make a claim. You should contact your insurer as soon as possible – never leave it for more than sixty days. Your policy may cover things like hotel expenses if you are evacuated from your home, as well as financial compensation for the damage to your property. If you are not insured, it is best to get insured. But, if you are uninsured when disaster strikes, you may be able to still get help from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Take Photos of the Damage

When it is safe to do so, you should check for structural damage to your home. As you inspect your property, it is a good idea to take photos as you go along. Photograph things like broken windows, roof leaks, and any other significant damage caused by the natural disaster. That way, you have a good record to show your insurance company.

Accompany Your Insurer During the Property Inspection

When the insurer arrives to inspect the damage to your property, it is important you walk alongside them during the inspection so that you can point out anything that the inspector may miss. This ensures that you get coverage for all damage to your property, not just what was observed by the insurance inspector.

Only Repair Essentials

Once the natural disaster has passed, you will probably want to make repairs straight away. However, you should wait until your insurance company has inspected the property. It is fine to do essential repairs to make the property stable. But, your insurer needs to know exactly what damage was caused and view it first-hand. So, wait to complete repairs until after the insurance inspection. You should also keep receipts for any repairs that have been made.

Know the Timeline of Your Insurance Claim

It is important you understand your insurer’s timeline so that you are not left waiting around. Beware that insurer deadlines can change after natural disasters, but your insurance company is obliged to respond to your claim within fourteen days. At that point, your insurance company could ask for more information about the damage or require you to fill out a proof-of-loss form. The next step involves the insurer reviewing your claim. It can be accepted or rejected, which is why it is a good idea to contact a lawyer early on. The review process typically takes up to thirty days. If your claim is accepted, the insurance company usually has ninety days to send you the compensation.

When dealing with property damage claims after a natural disaster, it is essential to have an experienced property damage lawyer by your side.

Rising Puerto Rican Star, Babywine

Puerto Rican rising star Babywine continues to position herself as one of the top figures in the industry. The young artist has taken guaracha, and has given it a 2021 twist, creating a trendy sound that has fans and followers hooked.

Babywine saw a massive rise to fame thanks to her mentor DJ Nelson, who included her as a featured artist in his viral song “Papi” along with Jose De Las Heras and Alejandro Armes, that has over 10 million streams across digital platforms, over 8 million views on YouTube, and exploded on TikTok, becoming the number one used sound with more than 800 thousand videos.

Following the success of “Papi,” Babywine joined DJ Nelson and Alejandro Armes once again to release “Noche De Entierro,” a fun reggaeton about letting loose and enjoying a night out from a woman’s perspective that has already amassed over 1.2 million views on YouTube.

Next up in Babywine’s promising career is the highly anticipated remix to “Mojito,” another one of DJ Nelson’s certified hits, that will be dropping very soon.

Babywine was born and raised in Puerto Rico, and ever since she was a little girl she was drawn to music and started taking lessons. As a teenager, she joined a rock band and toured all over Puerto Rico, making herself known in the local scene.

When she decided to pursue a solo career, she did it guided by famed producer Noriega, quickly positioning herself within the Puerto Rican urban scene. Her constant hustle has led her to work with and find support in artists such as J Alvarez, Nio Garcia, Lelo y Jazzy, Turra Medina, and most recently, the people who have become her mentors and are guiding her as she becomes internationally known: DJ Nelson and Pablo Casals.

With DJ Nelson and Pablo Casals, Babywine’s sound has evolved, going beyond the typical Latin urban and adding a more unique sound with guaracha, thus becoming one of the most important exponents of that genre today. Besides the uber viral “Papi” and “Noche de Entierro,” Babywine has found success with her previous hits  “Rompecorazones.”

Hilton Hotel São Paulo Installs ActivePure Technology

Amid the spread of new variants of COVID-19, the Hilton Hotel and Resort in São Paulo, Brazil, is committed to the health and safety of its guests and employees and is taking extra precautions by installing ActivePure Technology. ActivePure is the only air and surface purification technology proven to proactively and continuously inactivate SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19, on surfaces and in the air. In addition, ActivePure’s decontamination technology occurs in real-time and is safe for use in occupied indoor spaces. ActivePure Technologies’ exclusive distributor in Brazil handled the sale.

“The transformation of spaces into healthy environments will be part of the safety protocols post-pandemic, which includes, above all, the quality of the air we breathe,” says Henrique Cury, president of ActivePure Brazil, an ActivePure Technologies global partner. “We are delighted to provide peace of mind to Hilton’s guests as they visit São Paulo.”

With the Hilton brand strengthening safety and disinfection practices for its hotels worldwide, the Hilton São Paulo Morumbi added an extra layer of protection with ActivePure. As a result, guests, employees and visitors to the hotel and resort have the confidence that the property’s indoor air and surfaces are protected by this technology, proven by science and independently validated to inactivate the COVID-19 virus and other clinically relevant pathogens in the air and on surfaces.

This sanitizing system further enhances the CleanStay™ and EventReady with CleanStay™ Programs, launched globally by the Hilton brand, which offer a high standard of cleaning and disinfection to protect guests, customers, event planners and their attendees, as well as members of the team.

“With ActivePure, the Hilton São Paulo Morumbi is able to invite people into their hotel and resort with confidence,” said Joe Urso, chairman and CEO of ActivePure Technologies, LLC. “We commend Hilton São Paulo for prioritizing the health and safety of its guests and employees.”

ActivePure Technologies is a science-driven company that has developed a one-of-a-kind technology that immediately, safely and continuously inactivates pathogens – including SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, as well as bacteria and other pathogens in the air and on surfaces. The technology, which has origins in the NASA Space Program and was inducted into the Space Foundation Hall of Fame in 2017, powers the 100 plus adaptable ActivePure Technology devices trusted by millions of hotels, hospitals, schools, stores, offices and homes worldwide.

ActivePure works instantly and continuously to fill rooms with virus-neutralizing particles. ActivePure’s patented technology releases thousands of submicroscopic particles that actively target pathogens in the air and on surfaces, inactivating them safely on contact.

In June 2020, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) deemed ActivePure Technology safe to use in occupied spaces when it cleared the ActivePure Medical Guardian as a Class II Medical Device, using the same ActivePure Technology found in over 100 devices. Simon Beck × The Sparks Brothers Film

Internationally acclaimed land artist Simon Beck has created a giant drawing of the band Sparks Brothers Ron & Russell Mael – on the beach at Brean, near Burnham on Sea, UK, to celebrate the acclaimed release of the film The Sparks Brothers.

“We’ve seen fan art, Sparks tattoos, Sparks fashion design, Sparks cosplay, etc., etc., but this is absolutely amazing in its scope and ambition. The remoteness of the location and the temporal quality of the beach sand drawings only adds to the sheer stunning head-shaking quality of it all. Yikes. Coming soon to a beach near you.” Ron and Russell Mael, Sparks.

Directed by Edgar Wright (Baby Driver, Shaun of The Dead, Hot Fuzz), The Sparks Brothers explores the career of the hugely influential band who first came to prominence in the UK in 1974 with the hit single “This Town Ain’t Big Enough For Both Of Us” and who have now released 25 genre-defying albums in their extraordinary 50-year career.

A now-familiar sight on the Somerset beach, 62-year-old Taunton-based Simon Beck creates perfect, detailed geometrical designs using a rake and a magnetic compass. The former cartographer created his first design on snow (by running in snow shows) in the Alps in 2004, and his first sand design in 2014. The drawing of Sparks is Simon’s 175 design on the beach at Brean.

Purdue University × First Innovation and Entrepreneurship Fellow

A professor who will connect Purdue University expertise with faculty and student startups has been named the Krannert School of Management‘s first Innovation and Entrepreneurship Fellow. These fellows connect the research enterprise with the commercialization enterprise.

Zhan Pang, the Lewis B. Cullman Rising Star Associate Professor of Management, has co-founded and been involved with startup companies in other ways since he was an undergraduate in mathematics at the Nanjing University. Pang is faculty affiliate of the Regenstrief Center for Healthcare Engineering, faculty affiliate of the Integrative Data Science Initiative, a member of the Krannert Ph.D. Committee and a member of the Purdue University Graduate Council. He also is on the board of China Titans Energy Technology Group Co. Ltd., a public company listed on Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

“The innovation and entrepreneurship fellows, as representatives of different schools or disciplines, can facilitate the knowledge exchange across disciplines and help connect people to academic experts in different colleges,” Pang said. “This is in line with Purdue’s vision of building an interdisciplinary environment for discovery, learning and engagement to become or remain the most innovative university in America and the world.”

David Hummels, the Dr. Samuel R. Allen Dean of the Krannert School, expressed support in Pang and the fellowship.

“Krannert holds a unique position at the intersection of business and technology, and we say that big ideas don’t change the world until they go to market,” Hummels said. “Professor Zhan Pang is not only an outstanding scholar; he has co-founded or been involved in a number of tech startups, and he has served in an advisory capacity connecting companies to venture capitalists. He will be an excellent bridge-builder as we work to expand faculty efforts to help commercialize the world-changing discoveries that happen at our university.”

Along with one of his former Ph.D. students, Pang co-founded Data Analytics Technology to develop advanced data analytics tools and AI technologies dedicated to the health management industry.

Pang becomes Purdue’s third Innovation and Entrepreneurship Fellow. In January, the College of Agriculture appointed Christian Butzke as its Innovation and Entrepreneurship Fellow.
