Dev09 Debuts “Oh Shit”

Dark, brooding and somber, 21 year old Dev09 arrives with her alterna-pop cut, “Oh Shit,” premiering on NYLON who deemed it a “sick new track.”

With lyrics spiralling through an rnb-infused bass line that is tangled over a re-worked guitar riff, the song is about “disassociation,” and explores her own personal journey with addiction and struggles with mental health. She went on to explain to NYLON how the song speaks of “isolating yourself from everyone, so you don’t have to deal with the pain you’re causing them when you hurt yourself, because that shit gets to be unbearable. [It] just sort of takes you through blurry moments of my life, from the time I had seizures in front of my parents at home, to driving off oxys, to getting locked into hospital rooms and being forced into residential treatment.” The release follows the genre-bending and stripped-down, “Bored“, which was her first release in 3 years.

It’s always been about music. Born in South Bend, Indiana, the 21-year old Dev09 sang before she could talk. Sing-alongs to Frank Sinatra on car rides, to Verdi at dinner, and to all of the Nina Simone and Wilco, New Order, Nirvana, English Beat, Libertines, and Charlie Parker that played when her mom was cooking are among Dev’s best childhood memories. Her favorite toy was a microphone. A decade of cello lessons began at age three.

Trading her cello for a guitar in middle school, things changed for Dev even as they stayed the same. A$AP Rocky replaced Sinatra, but Dev kept writing and singing. Excited by new hip hop idols, she reached beyond Indiana for collaborators without ever leaving South Bend. In fact – she tweeted at A$AP Yams, the founder of the A$AP Mob, how many retweets she would need for him to escort her to senior prom. His response, “1K boo” is now one of her several tattoos. Unfortunately, Yams died shortly after their exchange, but the experience connected the teen vocalist with A$AP Ferg’s producer, Stelios Phili.

Dev collaborated long distance with Phili, and released her breakout single, “You Made Me.” Called “sparse and stylish,” this mashup of hip hop and club pop was named one of 2015’s best songs by Pigeons and Planes.

Seizing the moment, Dev followed the success of “You Made Me” with a move to Los Angeles—a fast and furious beginning cut short by her bi-polar II diagnosis and rehabilitation in 2016. Fully recovered, Dev signed with 300 and is already back to doing what she loves. Her forthcoming EP sees Dev navigate her journey with mental health – touching on things like addiction.

CBD: A Neuroprotective Wonder

Over the past century, neurodegenerative illnesses have significantly increased, and some researchers believe that they will become even more prevalent going forward. A study on Alzheimer’s disease and dementia released in December 2017 suggested that 15 million Americans will suffer from either condition, or “mild cognitive impairment” by 2060, an increase of more than 150 percent on current numbers.

Neuroscience has lagged behind other fields of medicine, with the complexity of the brain proving a difficult code to crack for researchers. The demand for neuroprotective treatments to conserve the health of the brain and stave off mental illnesses caused, at least in part, by brain inflammation is great, but treatments have been hard to come by. However, cannabinoids, an uncommon but seemingly critical set of compounds found in strains of cannabis, have exhibited some intriguing neuroprotective effects in the few studies we have available.

The endocannabinoid system is responsive to these cannabinoids and appears to be neuroprotectant in enhancing deep sleep by regulating the sleep-wake cycle, and by reducing brain inflammation, which endocannabinoids can do by tweaking immune system response.

In this post, we’ll explore in-depth a few of the ways that CBD is an effective neuroprotective drug, with focus on slowing the progression of neurodegenerative illnesses, limiting the damage following brain injuries and facilitating neurogenesis in important parts of the brain, which may hold the key to alleviating depression.

CBD for neurodegenerative diseases

Huntington’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and dementia are all types of neurodegenerative illness. Nerve fiber damage occurs naturally due to aging but is also accelerated by these neurodegenerative diseases, as myelin sheath deteriorates – but it appears that CBD can halt or at least stifle this unhelpful process.

Deterioration of the myelin sheath causes a loss of cognitive function and memory, and in the case of Parkinson’s leads to a loss of motor control, hence the uncontrollable and prevalent tremors. While tremors are common among the elderly due to unavoidable neurodegeneration, these are not as severe.

Just recently, a Brazilian doctor was granted a special license by the country’s government to prescribe CBD oil to a patient diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Brazil has been a hub for medical cannabis research in South America, and in particular for studies on the brain.

Sleep is neuroprotective

Mental and physical health problems arise when the body doesn’t get enough sleep, and adults attempting to regularly get by on fewer than the recommended minimum of seven hours are likely to experience fatigue. Conditions such as insomnia and sleep apnea contribute to a lack of sleep and waking up during sleep, but there are other factors that stop the mind from winding down, including anxiety, depression, stress and physical pain.

Thankfully, slow-release CBD products like CBD gummy bears boost sleep and influences the sleep-wake cycle to promote more regenerative deep sleep, and also treats the aforementioned quartet of sleep-preventing symptoms. CBD is also effective for epilepsy patients who suffer from seizures and spasms which keep them awake at night.

Deep sleep is much more important than rapid-eye movement (REM) sleep, a considerably lighter phase of sleep where we have dreams and nightmares. It is only in deep sleep where cerebrospinal fluid, which usually cushions the brain from the outside, enters the brain and flushes away neurotoxins responsible for neurodegeneration. Deep sleep also helps with the production of new cells all over the body. The all-round rejuvenation in this phase is crucial for combatting fatigue.

Reducing and limiting brain damage

Over the past few decades, cannabis has typically been accused of being bad for the brain, with its psychoactive effects triggering mental health conditions such as psychosis. But the studies on CBD have found the opposite, and in fact, administering CBD after a stroke or traumatic brain injury (TBI) may reduce the overall brain damage.

CBD is an antioxidant as well as an anti-inflammatory, which is important as oxidation in the brain has been linked to DNA damage of cells in the organ.

The brain damage that occurs from strokes is referred to as ischemic injury, and the death of brain cells can cause localized paralysis and a loss of speech. The quicker someone suffering from a stroke is treated, the less severe the damage is. Studies have found that the endocannabinoid system is active during a stroke, and that limiting the number of inflammatory cytokines released could be essential to protecting motor control and cognitive function.

Neuroprotection, neurogenesis and treating depression

Research into depression has advanced in the 21st century, although pharmaceutical treatments for the mood disorder, which affects 300 million globally, are still below par. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), the most widely-used and recent class of antidepressants, can take weeks before benefits begin to show, cause side effects such as insomnia, nausea and impotence, and for some patients do not even work.

However, CBD has been found to elevate mood by promoting anandamide in the endocannabinoid system and agonising the 5-HT1A receptor in the serotonin system. And in 2016, evidence was produced showing CBD and another non-psychoactive cannabinoid called cannabichromene (CBC) to have neurogenesis effects in adult rats, helping to stimulate growth in the hippocampus. This is important, as long-term depression causes shrinkage in this part of the brain.

In 2018, a team of Brazilian and Danish researchers found CBD to be an effective medication for depression in rats from the first dose, with therapeutic effects lasting for a week after treatment was stopped. The study revealed that the number of synaptic proteins in the prefrontal cortex eventually increased, a sign that the antidepressant effects had worn off. Past research has connected a rise in these proteins to depression. Therefore, according to one professor on the study, CBD repairs neuronal circuitry in the prefrontal cortex which becomes damaged due to depression.

CBD vape oil and e-liquid and CBD edibles are both useful products for managing neurodegeneration. However, conditions with acute symptoms must be remedied more quickly, and in those situations, vaping e-juice or taking CBD oil provides the most benefit.

Of “Two Punks In Love”, bülow comments, “With ‘Two Punks In Love’ it feels like I’ve gone full circle. It’s a homey feeling. I was creating this kind of music at the very beginning, when it was just me, my guitar, in my bedroom. Noah Kahan “False Confidence” and Tour Dates

Today, global singer/songwriter sensation Noah Kahan unveils his latest single, “False Confidence,”—listen and share HERE. “False Confidence” sets the stage for further music to be released by Kahan this fall.

Noah Kahan’s first-ever North American, European and UK headlining tour kicks off next month on October 3rd in Atlanta at Vinyl. Shows are quickly selling out, including dates in New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, Washington, DC, Toronto, Denver and more. See the full list of tour dates below. Tickets are available now at www.NoahKahan.com/tour.

Of his new single, Noah explains, “‘False Confidence’ is a song I wrote when I felt like I was trying too hard to be what I thought an artist should be, instead of who I was. I felt like I was losing my identity in trying to reach for some unattainable picture of a successful person; confident, polished, secure. I wrote ‘False Confidence’ to remember not to take myself so seriously.”

“False Confidence” arrives hot on the heels of his 2018 global smash, “Hurt Somebody” feat. Grammy-nominated Julia Michaels.

Growing up in Strafford, VT (pop. 1045), small town wonderment led Noah to explore songwriting early on, emulating musical influences like Paul Simon, Ben Howard and The Lumineers. Kahan writes with thought-provoking realism about self-doubt and fear, while highlighting the intricacies of relationships with an unpolished sincerity. That approach, along with his head-turning vocals, has brought Kahan a long way from Strafford in a very short amount of time. As a senior in high school, Noah’s songwriting attracted the attention of world-class songwriters Dan Wilson (Adele), Scott Harris (Shawn Mendes), Chris DeStefano (Carrie Underwood), among others. Word spread quickly within the songwriting community, and it wasn’t long after graduating high school that Kahan decided to defer his college acceptance to pursue a career in music, eventually straying from the 133-acre tree farm he grew up on to work with Lorde & Khalid’s producer Joel Little. The two recorded six songs together, including Noah’s debut single, “Young Blood,” which entered Spotify’s US Viral Chart at #5 and has cracked over 20 million streams to date.

Noah followed this with his global smash, “Hurt Somebody” feat. Grammy-nominated Julia Michaels. Available on his 2018 debut EP, Hurt Somebody, the song charted at #1 on Australian national radio for three weeks, while also charting in the Top 40 at Hot AC stateside. “Hurt Somebody”’s total streams are over the 120 million-mark, and it is certified double platinum in Australia and gold in Canada, Sweden, Norway, Netherlands, Switzerland and New Zealand. Kahan made his late-night U.S. television debut performing “Hurt Somebody” on Late Night With Stephen Colbert earlier this year. As “Hurt Somebody” became an international hit, Kahan sold out venues on a headlining tour across the UK, Europe and Australia, as well as supported George Ezra and LP on their spring North American tours. Noah returns with “False Confidence” as he gears up to release more new music this fall.

Can plastic surgery make you look older?

According to expert Board-Certified Plastic surgeons, the goal of cosmetic surgery is to make a woman like look a refreshed, enhanced version of herself. While many seek cosmetic surgery to turn back the clock; (a respectable, personal choice) there is a downside. The eerie expressionless, puffy, distorted, look that makes people appear even older than they are. To help us understand and achieve a more maintained, elegant look, we tapped the expertise of Board-Certified Denver Plastic Surgeon Dr. Manish Shah.

Most Common Culprit… Too Much Filler

According to Dr. Shah, the best way to begin is to look at photos of the person decades younger to assess their aging progression and facial symmetry. “You want to look at the facial features to see where there is drooping or volume loss as not to run the risk of over filling the face. When too much filler is used, facial balance is thrown off.”

Dr. Shah explains that today we’re seeing young women in their 20’s trying to look like they’re photo filtered in real life. “They start Botox too young, or overfill their lips, breasts, and derrieres. The odd consequence is that that end up looking older. There are several celebrities who are under 25 and look 30, and 35 due to the work they’ve had done. The lips and cheeks are often the first facial features to be overdone in younger patients.”

Facial Breakdown

Cheeks: Dr. Shah says, that “Over-suctioning cheeks through liposuction can make you look older. Stiffness or “puffy cheeks” can also occur if there is unnecessary fat transfer or filler injections are overdone.”

Brows: A highly arched eye brow, or a brow without any arch can instantly age you. “Getting the eyebrow height perfect to achieve a natural look is one of the most challenging techniques plastic surgeons face with Botox, be sure to find someone who specializes in brow area Botox.”

Chin: “The overall balance of your face can be thrown off if a chin implant is too large,” says Dr. Shah. He adds, “Facial structure goes from more of a heart shape to a square shape. Also, the softness of your face gets lost.”

Neck: Removing too much fat from the neck can result in an excessive deep and sharp angle that gives more of a harsh look.

Midface: Some women get a facelift before it’s needed. Think of many of the stars of Bravo’s Real Housewive’s franchise. “When it’s unnecessary or not done properly, the underlying facial tissues give an unnatural fullness in the cheeks that makes the face look aged, explains Dr. Shah.”

Eyes: Fat removal under the eyes is popular in younger patients. The problem is that removing too much fat can really make a patient look hollower rather than refreshed.

Injectable Toxins: The Frozen Look

Botox, Dysport and Xeomin are all effective in reducing lines by temporarily paralyzing facial muscles to stop movement. Problems arise when they are overdone. The face can look very severe and certain facial features can become exaggerated. It is strange to see a woman over 50 with fewer forehead and brow mobility than a pre-teen!

Dr. Shah offers a tip and reminds us that injectable toxins are not permanent, and the result will fade away in time. “It’s best to let the product completely wear off before getting injectable toxins applied to the face again. It’s always best to start off with much less because you can always work your way up to more,” he advises.

Too Large Breast Implants:

Implants that do not fit a woman’s frame and are overexaggerated, are never a good idea at any age. The older a woman gets, the more this is going to scream, “look at me” and be incongruous with the rest of her appearance. Jane Fonda is a perfect example of a woman in her 80’s with implants that match her body in a flattering way.

Ignoring Your Hands and Décolleté:

So many women make the mistake of obsessing over their face, legs, derriere, breasts, and abdomen that they completely forget their hands and décolleté. The latter are a dead giveaway of age, no matter how young the rest of you looks.

Examples of Elegance:

According to Dr. Shah, here’s who he feels has “gotten it right” when it comes to aging gracefully whether they have had plastic surgery or not include, Jane Fonda, Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Lopez, Halle Berry, Angela Bassett, Katie Couric, Raquel Welch, Kathie Lee Gifford, Kris Jenner, Naomi Campbell, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jayne Seymour, Ellen DeGeneres, Sharon Stone, and Padma Lakshmi. Use these celebs for inspiration when contemplating cosmetic enhancements.
