BUICK REGAL SPORTBACK

By Benjamin Reese × Vaughn Lowery

As if the name didn’t suggest it enough, the 2018 Buick Regal Sportback appears to have spent some time training for combat. At first glance, the Regal Essence can appear aggressive due to it’s sharp and narrow LED headlamps with their automatic self leveling system and cornering ability have a bit of “Demon” presence while the rear half of the chassis, with it’s raked roof is calm and collected. Overall the body porpotions have a “utopian” greenhouse effect. Buick claims there are “zero” edges on this car and you’d be hardpressed to find any.

If the looks aren’t enough to please, the cabin works well as a mobile office double with plenty of convienent driver ammenities such as the optional “sights and sounds” package. A premium HD audio system adds extra “oomph” by replacing the spare tire under the trunk with a subwoofer- not to worry as the roadside emergency tool kit with a tire inflator is supplemented. The passengers are never left out of the action with the Regals 4G LTE hotspot connection, including Blutooth streaming for Apple car play.

The 2018 Regal Sportback’s personality and charm really shine when it’s 2.0 liter turbocharged engine paired with a quick shifting 9-speed automatic gearbox work together like a complex watch. It’s fair to say that the Regal entices you to put the pedal to the floor while it begs you for more. Perhaps this is a result of the new Buick being assembled in Europe by Opel, a company that has had its fair share of cars built for the street that end up on the track.

Our Essence model, with the 18-inch machined wheels and optional fog lamps came out the door with a $35,800 price tag- not bad considering all of the performance and infotainment features, but it’s European build quality suggest a car that would retail for quite a bit more.

The Rise of Logistics in 2018

In recent years, the logistics industry has seen significant growth. Advancements in technology have pushed the sector forward, making it one of the most in-demand industries in the world.

All logistics sectors are experiencing continued growth, with new trends constantly being introduced to keep consumers and businesses happy. Here, we’ll look at the rise of logistics in 2018 and the key trends to be aware of.

e-Commerce has revolutionised logistics industry

There’s no denying the main contributor to the rise in logistics in 2018 is e-commerce. The rise in e-retailers has led to a boom in digital shopping. This has in turn, increased demand for logistics, with companies striving to keep up with demand.

It isn’t just the actual need for logistics which has seen a dramatic increase in demand. There’s also been pressure placed upon logistics providers to offer a faster, more reliable and high-tech service. Online business is booming, and it shows no signs of slowing down.

Variable shipping options

One of the key logistics trends for 2018, is variable shipping options. While it’s true consumers now expect faster delivery, what they also want is variable shipping options.

It’s all well and good offering free next or same day delivery. However, not all of your customers are going to want their items the same or next day. Therefore, to keep everyone happy, you need to ensure you’re providing numerous options, allowing the customer to choose the most convenient option for them.

It’s a good idea to start looking for courier companies which give you numerous options. Sites such as Parcel2Go.com, can help you narrow down your search.

Shipper 3PL relationships play a key role in future of logistics

Although the rise in logistics in 2018 is most certainly positive, it does pose some challenges for providers. 3PL’s are fast growing in demand, meaning logistics professionals now need to work on improving their 3PL relationships.

Shippers and logistics companies need to start seeing each other more as partners, in order to improve the customer experience. Logistics companies will also likely start to offer more unique services to stay ahead.

Overall, the logistics industry remains one of the fastest growing industries in the globe. With each passing year, it’s only set to become even more integral to our daily lives. However, with a dramatic rise in demand, comes a lot of potential challenges both logistics providers and businesses need to prepare for.

GRINGO IN GRANADA

Gringo in Granada

By Robert Grant

Parque Central is the perfect inception to your exploration of Granada on a summer day. To stand here is to truly be transported back in time. As one of the oldest European settled cities in the Americas, the remnants of the colonialist era endure here brushed in a palette that seemingly exploded from an artist’s wildest imagination. The square, encased by Spanish-style churches and government buildings is a busy place. Horse-drawn carriages line the perimeter awaiting tourists to hire them and vendors fill the center offering a bit of the place to take home.

Old meets new in Granada. A quick stroll down the avenues will expose you to the beautiful provincial architecture whose brilliance is not lost by the splash of color that the locals have introduced. The vibrance of the city is best experienced on foot and you’ll easily fall in love with this bike-friendly town.

Like most of Nicaragua, the city of Granada is surrounded by lakes and volcanoes offering a real treat for the adventurer in you. After grabbing a bite near the square (plenty of eateries nearby) take a tour using one of the local services. If you haven’t booked an itinerary beforehand, most restaurant and shop owners can point you in the direction of a tour agency. Leo Tours comes highly recommended and takes groups to Las Isletas de Granada (Islets of Granada) and the nearby volcano Mombacho. If you’re touring the volcano it’s advised to arrive early in the morning (around 5 am) as this is an option that consumes an entire day.

The trek to Las Isletas begins with a bike ride from the city to the nearby port from which you can board a motor boat or kayak to traverse the waters of Lake Nicaragua. Wear comfy shoes and be sure to pack a bathing suit as things are soon to get a little wet and wild. Leo tours offers both bilingual and Spanish guides -depending on your proficiency- who will help you navigate the lake and provide tons of historic information.

The best way to experience the beauty and tranquility of Las Isletas is to go via kayak. If you haven’t kayaked before be advised that this tour is not for the faint of heart. There are no rapids, but lake Nicaragua is a massive lake-the 2nd largest in Central America and 19th in the world- that reaches depths of 85 ft. The tour itself takes about 3 1/2 hours with 2 1/2 of that spent on the water.  Once underway you’ll sail past some of the most beautiful wildlife and flora you’ve ever seen. Formed by the eruption of nearby Mombacho thousands of years ago, the islets are numerous are very unique ecologically. Various species of birds and particularly monkeys can be seen here before arriving at the famous isla de mono (monkey island). The islets on the periphery of the lake are also home to many wealthy Nicaraguans. Former presidents, executives and foreign diplomats take residence in the many mansions that line the path.

A good guide will make this tour very memorable for you and take great photos while giving you lots of information. If you opt to take the tour later in the day (last leaves at 2:30 pm) it’s the ideal time to enjoy the sunset on the lake.

Your visit to Nicaragua is not complete without a stop in Granada, the crown jewel of this volcanic nation. A less known oasis is quickly becoming a well known tourist attraction. For a stop a that’s affordable and gringo friendly, look no further.

THAI DISHES

By: Vaughn Lowery

About 24 years ago, Tom Wynter moved from Thailand to America with a dream to open his own commercial enterprise. He started working at Thai Dishes restaurant, the old location. And moved on to a California Pizza Kitchen location for almost a decade and became a licensed bartender where he functioned at a popular bar in Hollywood. After becoming managerial staff at various establishments, he begins to act in tandem with Thai Dishes in Santa Monica when it was located on 2nd Street. The owners decided to call it quits as the rental for their location was coming up for renewal. Wynter decided to extend the legacy of this authentic Thailand franchise and discovered a vacancy at 123 Broadway in Santa Monica which fulfilled his imagination – a restaurant with a bar and patio which mimicked the likes of cafes in Paris. This time around he wanted to make sure that his restaurant had all of the key ingredients which he really felt engaged him as a patron – great food and drinks with a decor to match.

Soon After, Thai Dishes on Broadway was born. An unassuming and unpretentious venue which would be perfect for a quick drink/bite or a spot where you celebrate your birthday. Wynter obviously struck gold being a half block away from Ocean Boulevard, the newly renovated mall and the last stop on the Expo Line. For this area, everything is moderately priced and holds all the right offerings for a romantic date or simply a place to recharge your batteries while you people watch in the sidewalk seating. The ambiance is stellar: mosaic tiling near bar, warm fall colors, bespoke wall paper, faux ostrich wrapped table tops and unique Thai ornaments sprinkled throughout. The most sought after menu items include: BBQ pork over rice, spicy green bean tofu, roasted duck over rice and red curry chicken (presentation is very reminiscent of an authentic Thai dining experience).

Specialty handcrafted cocktails like their Mai Thai cocktails made with Thai whiskey will keep you coming back, but customer service contributed by his general manager, Leila Regalado, is a key component to TDOB’s success. She will have you seated within seconds and constantly will check in to see if you require anything else. If her smile isn’t enticing enough, serving size, happy hour specials and bottomless mimosas on Saturday/Sunday from 12 to 3 pm) should reel you back in.

Wynter asserts, “I’m constantly checking on the quality of food that comes out our kitchen and my staff sometimes needs me during holidays and weekends, which leaves little or no time for a life outside of this place.”

THAAI DISHES SQUARE

One thing’s for sure, Tom Wynter and all of his personal sacrifices have made Thai Dishes On Broadway a slam dunk within the Santa Monica Pier/Downtown area.

SG LEWIS ANNOUNCES FALL TOUR

Today, Republic Records songwriter and producer SG Lewis announces his fall North American Tour.

The 19 date tour kicks off September 25th at Union Stage in Washington D.C. and takes him across North America making stops at Brooklyn’s Elsewhere on September 28th and Los Angeles’ The Fonda Theater on October 19th. Tickets go on sale this Friday at 10am local time. See full itinerary below.

On the upcoming tour SG Lewis noted, “Touring the US & Canada last year was one of the craziest experiences of my life and at the end of this year I’m coming back ⚡️This will be the biggest tour I’ve done yet & I can’t wait to see you all again.”

Recently SG Lewis shared ‘Dusk’. The 6-track release is the first chapter of his three-part dedication to club music: ‘Dusk, Dark, Dawn’ and is available to buy and stream now via all partners.

Presented over three phases, Dusk, Dark, Dawn maps the trajectory of one night out over the course of an album, matching genres and tempos different stages of that night, beginning at sun-down, both inside and outside the club. On ‘Dusk’, SG Lewis plays with disco, west coast hip-hop and 80’s electro references to start the story. “Disco has always had the association of the start of a night for me. I spent a lot a time as a resident DJ in clubs and disco was always that magnetic genre, always brought people onto the dancefloor.” Lead single ‘Aura’ blends SG’s signature warm, uptempo house with disco inflections. “There’s an undeniable beauty to this part of the night. The apprehension, excitement… ‘Dusk’ is the warm-up for the heavier, darker things to come.”

The 6-track release includes features with J Warner and Kartell (Roche Musique). The project will soon segue into ‘Dark’ – a phase dedicated to harder, post-midnight club music styles like techno and hip-hop – and finally ‘Dawn’, dedicated to euphoria and chillout.

Be on the lookout for more news from SG Lewis soon.
