DEATHBYROMY × “PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN”

Capitol Records released DeathbyRomy’s “Come and Play With Me,” a song she wrote and recorded for the Promising Young Woman: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, which will be released on December 4. Listen HERE. In this Refinery29 feature, which accompanied the exclusive premiere of the song, DeathbyRomy talks about collaborating with Emerald Fennell, the film’s writer-director. Fennell also served as Executive Soundtrack Producer, teaming up with music supervisor Sue Jacobs and Capitol Records.

DeathbyRomy recalls, “Upon meeting Emerald we discovered we had a lot of similar music influences. For example, we were both big NIN fans and when I learned her favorite songs of mine were my favorite deep cuts, I knew we were gonna work together beautifully.”

DeathbyRomy wrote the track with Andy Rosen, who collaborated with her on Love u   to Death, her 2019 Capitol Records debut EP. The 20-year-old singer/songwriter pours both pain and euphoria into her catchy yet dark music, pitting electronic melodies and propulsive beats against hypnotic vocals and deeply personal lyrics. Her take on “It’s Raining Men” the iconic No. 1 dance anthem originally released by The Weather Girls in 1982   also appears on the soundtrack. Listen to “It’s Raining Men” HERE.

Focus Features will release the Sundance hit Promising Young Woman on Christmas Day, Friday, December 25, 2020 in theaters domestically. View the trailer HERE. Vice observed, “[Promising Young Woman] expertly uses femme pop songs to underscore its critically acclaimed twisted tale of trauma and revenge.” Refinery 29 said, “[the] soundtrack is full of daring, empowering and straight-up fun tracks.” Vanyaland praised CYN’s “Uh Oh” as “an infectious riff-cruiser of a tune that should jump off the screen as soon as it hits.”  Noted Idolator, “The ‘Promising Young Woman’ soundtrack is a dose of girl-power. Cyn already landed a breakthrough radio hit with  ‘Drinks.’ Don’t be too surprised if she does it all over again with ‘Uh Oh.'”

Those who pre-order the 16-track collection in digital format will instantly receive “Come and Play With Me” and  “It’s Raining Men” plus CYN’s “Uh Oh” and “Drinks” and Donna Missal’s interpretation of Cigarettes After Sex’s 2012 breakthrough single, “Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You Baby.”

The soundtrack also features previously unreleased tracks from MUNA and BLESSUS plus Carmen DeLeon’s cover of the Gerry Goffin-Carole King penned “He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss”). Charli XCX’s “Boys,” Paris Hilton’s “Stars Are Blind,” Sky Ferreira’s “Downhill Lullaby” and Juice Newton’s “Angel of the Morning” are among the previously released tracks that Fennell employs to subvert the audience’s expectations over the course of the film. Other featured artists include Maya B and Lily & Madeleine.

Donna Missal – Just Like You

In her new video, “Just Like You,” Donna Missal is a playful shapeshifter, morphing from garage band singer to angel to heartsick lover to dark butterfly. Yet amid all the roles she plays, Donna’s singular style shines bright in the clip, making it clear that there is no one quite like her. “Just Like You” is the latest in a series of videos to accompany songs from her new album, Lighter (Harvest Records). She directed the video with Erica Hernandez, the photographer who shot the album cover and the photographs for Donna’s press campaign. The two edited the video along with Marco Rosas. Donna teamed up with producer AG (Christina Perri, Aloe Blacc) to record Cigarettes After Sex’s “Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You Baby” for the Promising Young Woman: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. Fans who pre-order the album in digital format will instantly receive “Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You Baby” plus Cyn’s “Drinks.” Focus Features will release the Sundance hit Promising Young Woman on Christmas Day, Friday, December 25, 2020 in theaters.

Entertainment Voice said, “[With] “Just Like You,” Missal has transitioned elegantly from R&B-adjacent to full pop. She recaps the opening number, asking repeatedly, ‘How does it feel,’ before erupting into yet another chorus full of synth horns and the most indulgent filigree.” Riff Magazine noted, “The angst also appears on ‘Just Like You,’ which invokes the ’90s sound of artists like Natalie Imbruglia, Meredith Brooks and Alanis Morissette.” Atwood Magazine hailed Lighter as “messy, raw, and utterly genius.” The new video follows the “Bedroom Sessions,” a quartet of self-directed videos that feature Donna performing intimate versions of other songs from the album – “Slow Motion,” “Bloom,” “Who Loves You” and “Carefully.” View HERE.

In a feature that put Donna “In Conversation” with Shania Twain, Interview Magazine said, “Missal’s thunderous vocals, mixed with her poignant lyrics and a country-meets-90s rock attitude, transformed the record into a wildfire of emotional upheaval making way for growth accompanied by a newfound sense of creative empowerment; one that comes from being in full control of her story.” The New Nine noted, “Donna is the badass artist we need right now… Missal is unforgettable, the pure force of her voice can radiate through a room reaching the deepest corners, but at the same time be so soft and delicate. The way she moves through every realm between the two extremes gives you chills.”

Promising Young Woman Soundtrack

On December 4, Capitol Records will release the Promising Young Woman: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. The soundtrack is already generating a buzz, with Variety predicting Oscar nominations for Best Original Song for three of its tracks. This album’s release precedes the exciting release of the soundtrack’s film. Following the early December release of the soundtrack, Focus Features will release Promising Young Woman on Christmas Day.

Director Emerald Fennell brings a fascinating story of revenge to the screen with Promising Young Woman. Originally premiering to huge acclaim in Sundance earlier this year, Fennell’s film stars Carey Mulligan and Bo Burnham along with an ensemble cast that includes Laverne Cox, Alison Brie, Connie Britton, Jennifer Coolidge, Max Greenfield, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Chris Lowell, Sam Richardson, Molly Shannon, and Clancy Brown. Everyone said Cassie, played by Carey Mulligan, was a promising young woman until a mysterious event abruptly derailed her future. Now, an unexpected encounter is about to give Cassie a chance to right the wrongs of the past in this thrilling and wildly entertaining story.

Fennell also served as Executive Soundtrack Producer, teaming up with music supervisor Sue Jacobs and Capitol Records to create what The Daily Beast describes as “a pop music soundtrack that could only be described as glorious.” Promising Young Woman’s soundtrack continues to receive praise from well respected sources. Specifically, Vice reported that the film “expertly uses femme pop songs to underscore its critically acclaimed twisted tale of trauma and revenge.” In another review, IndieWire noted, “The film is filled with inspired soundtrack choices – a strings-heavy take on Britney Spears’ ‘Toxic’ teases before it reveals itself at the perfect moment, and an amusing use of an ‘It’s Raining Men’ cover sells Fennell’s pitch-black sense of humor early on.” In general, the musical covers of popular pop songs offers one of the film’s greatest musical choices.
