Supreme Court’s “Faithless Electors” Ruling

By Ted Trimpa

The rapidly growing movement toward a national popular vote for president got a boost on July 6 when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that states can legally require presidential electors to vote for the candidate they promised to support when their political party nominated them.

The decision on so-called “faithless electors” underscores Article 2, Section 1 of the Constitution, which gives each state legislature the power to decide the manner in which presidential electors are chosen within their jurisdiction. Under the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, states that combine for 270 or more electoral votes would use that power to award their electors to the candidate who receives the most individual votes across all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

In other words, the compact would ensure that the Electoral College always reflects the will of the majority of voters across the U.S. Thus far, 15 states and the District of Columbia – comprising 196 electoral votes – have passed the National Popular Vote law and signed onto the compact. There are at least three important reasons why this reform measure makes sense.

First and foremost, a National Popular Vote would bring on a true 50-state presidential campaign in which every voter in every state is politically relevant.

Under the current system, we don’t so much elect the President of the United States as we do the President of the Battleground States – the handful of jurisdictions where the candidates spend virtually all their resources chasing blocks of electoral votes with the propensity to swing back and forth every four years. Candidates all but ignore the other 40 or so states, which can be expected to faithfully go red or blue without any further attention.

Under a National Popular Vote, candidates would surely be compelled to chase down every voter in every state, listen to their concerns, and pay attention to their local and regional issues. Imagine the Republican ticket barnstorming through Massachusetts, New York, and other ‘blue’ states they would otherwise ignore, while Democrats rally in reliably ‘red’ states like the Dakotas, Kansas, and West Virginia. The entire character of our presidential elections would change because winning 270 electoral votes and the White House would directly depend on winning the national popular vote.

Secondly, National Popular Vote would significantly amplify the power of voters in small states and rural states to help elect a president.

For example, under the current system, my home state of Colorado has a direct voice in allocating just our own block of nine electoral votes. Under a National Popular Vote, Coloradans gain a direct voice over the selection of 270 electors – enough to elect a president. Everyone would have their vote counted directly toward their choice for president. And the presidential candidate who gets the most popular votes would become president.

And third, a National Popular Vote would provide powerful insurance against the possibility of voter fraud swinging a presidential election to the wrong candidate.

Simple math and logic dictate that under a National Popular Vote, it would be virtually impossible to alter the hundreds of thousands, or more likely the millions of votes it would take to fraudulently elect a president.

Not so under the current system. Today, a handful of tampered votes could easily swing a razor-close presidential election one way or another. Changing a few hundred votes in Florida in 2000 would have swung the state’s 25 electoral votes, and the election, from Bush to Gore. Changing a few thousand votes in just a state or two in 2004 could have given the presidency to John Kerry, even though George W. Bush scored a national popular vote victory of more than three million.

The National Popular Vote movement is a constitutionally, uniquely, American idea whose time is fast approaching – and with just 74 electoral votes left in order to take effect, perhaps as soon as 2024.

Isaac Dunbar × Vevo DSCVR

Vevo announces the release of Isaac Dunbar’s DSCVR at Home performance of “boy”

Isaac Dunbar knows full well that when you sign up to be a pop artist these days, you sign up to be an influencer. At only 17, Isaac has thought a lot about what he wants to put out into that culture and the impact it can have. He has thought a lot about how he wants listeners to feel; Isaac mainly wants his fans to know they are not alone in the same way listening to artists like Lady Gaga did for him growing up as a mixed race and artistic kid.

Isaac has gravitated toward music to soothe himself ever since he was a child. Growing up in the town of Barnstable on Cape Cod, Dunbar was bullied for being different. “I never fit in,” he says. “I tried, but it didn’t work. So when other kids were hanging out with each other, I was nine years old and cocooned in my bed scouring the Internet for new music.” Always having a love of singing, he taught himself to play piano from YouTube tutorials. At 10 years old, Isaac noticed that Lady Gaga had tweeted a list of producers she worked with, one of whom was French house producer Madeon. “I saw that he had this program called FL Studio,” he recalls. “I illegally downloaded it at a Barnes & Noble in Hyannis, Massachusetts. And that’s how I taught myself to produce music.”

At 12, Dunbar began to release his self-proclaimed “self-aware alternative-pop,” and quickly began building an audience. Since then, Dunbar has signed to RCA Records and relished Zane Lowe premiering his song “Pharmacy” on his Beats 1 show. Billboard referred to him as a “newly christened pop star” and applauded his “vulnerable bravery and artistic honesty” on his label debut, Isaac’s Insects. The “verifiable wunderkind” (PAPER), has earned additional praise from the likes of The FADER and Ones to Watch, and has toured the US, Europe and the UK supporting girl in red.

Vevo DSCVR focuses on the development of emerging artists, through performance content and careful curation. Vevo has a long history of helping emerging artists break through to new and wider audiences. Past alumnae of Vevo’s DSCVR series include Billie Eilish, dodie and Kiana Ledé. Global Though Leader on Ending Racism

George Floyd’s murder ignited a wave of national and global protests demanding justice and change, including police reform and reparations for Black Americans. Structural Racism is not exclusive to the United States. Racism is clearly a global problem.

In a new interview with C.M. Rubin, Michael Baran, the Co-Author of Subtle Acts of Exclusion, says communities “need to work to address structural inequalities in societies in health, wealth, education, and criminal injustice.” Baran believes that it is important to start talking about bias with preschool children. “If we don’t teach them about this, they will learn passively through all the subtle messages in our culture, which leads to unconscious biases.” Baran additionally advocates for more focus on training teachers to be inclusive, “as teachers can have unconscious biases as well.”

Michael Baran is the Senior Partner & Digital Solutions Lead in InQUEST. He is also the Co-Author of Subtle Acts of Exclusion: How to Understand, Identify, and Stop Microaggressions. As an Author, Speaker, and also a Strategist for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Baran has been committed to conducting and organizing ethnographic research for varies social issues, including race and identity, racial disparities in education, violence against children, healthy housing, environmental health, human services, criminal justice reform, immigration reform, climate change, and early childhood development. NYC COVID-19 Mortality Zeros Out

By Katrina Tiktinsky

New York City celebrated an enormous moment of progress on June 12th, as the COVID-19 related mortality count hit zero for the first time since March.

Following a period of strict regulations and a cautious initiation of the phased reopening process, New York has transformed from the global epicenter of the virus to a model for pandemic response. Governor Cuomo initiated a shelter-in-place strategy, issuing a prolonged stay-at-home order to limit social contact. This measure effectively flattened the curve of infections, unburdening hospitals in NYC and the larger tri-state area.

The city has suffered over 200,000 cases, over 50,000 hospitalizations, and around 20,000 mortalities from the novel coronavirus. New York’s battle with the pandemic is not over, but the success embodied by this week’s milestone points to hope for the country at large, should other states follow similar safety measures.

As the federal government pushes aggressively for what experts warn would be a dangerously premature reopening of the country, New York has ideologically differentiated itself. The city has taken a steady approach, recognizing that the economy cannot thrive without healthy citizens. Wear your mask, keep your distance, do your part.

Chevy Trailblazer illustrated by Mina Tocalini for 360 MAGAZINE.

2021 Chevy Trailblazer

By Krishan Narsinghani, Vivek Lalchandani × Vaughn Lowery

Driving dynamics, heritage, sexiness, imposing, Chevy. What are you thinking of? ’63 Corvette with a split window? Mid engine C8 Corvette? Chevelle? Camaro? Wrong – everyone is talking about the 2021 Chevy Trailblazer.

GM pulled a bold move bringing back the Trailblazer name. An even bolder move is to make it a unibody construction compact SUV. 360 Magazine had the opportunity to spend some time with the little monster and definitely raised the game for competitors like the Honda HR-V, Toyota CH-R, and even the new Kia Seltos and Hyundai Venue/Kona. The main question is whether or not this new Trailblazer can park at the same lunch table as the original.

Design

Looks of the older model weren’t extraordinary but this makeover had the team in awe.  The new one gets dramatic lines and aggressive styling to start. The design is truly striking, taking after the beautiful new Camaro and big brother Blazer. If Americans want SUVs, then this is how manufacturers should be designing them. Take notes (Ford and Jeep). Glancing ahead, the upcoming Bronco and Grand Wagoneer have a precedent already set. Imagine the designers took a picture of a Blazer to photoshop, compressed it and added a flat and taller top. The front gets the same narrow headlight design. The only thing differentiating the front of the vehicle from the Blazer is the width, with this being slightly narrower.

Wrapping around to the side, the Trailblazer gets a much more traditional SUV shape over the Blazer. The top is square rather than sloped to mirror a coupe SUV. This beauty gets a floating roof design with the blacked out roof wrapping from the bottom of the front windshield all the way to the upper rear. The mirror caps are color matched with the roof. All trims get wheels to suit the rest of the car. RS trims get sporty wheels whereas the Active trim gets off road worthy smaller wheels with a thicker sidewall. The rear is just as striking as the front. The tail lights wrap around to the side of the vehicle, similar to Lexus design language. Exhaust tips are molded to a square shape. Overall, the Trailblazer is definitely one of the best, if not the best, looking entry in this segment.

Interior

Moving to the inside of the vehicle, the interior is expected to live up to the hype of the exterior. This is perhaps where the new model lacks. Chevy knocked it out of the park with the Blazer so why not carry over the interior design? On the contrary, the Trailblazer gets an interior that looks fairly normal in the segment with bland design. The large round air vents are gone along with the beautiful simplistic climate controls. Let’s not get it twisted, this doesn’t mean the interior doesn’t feel nice. Materials are excellent along with the technology. Soft touch materials are placed everywhere to give a more premium feel. The RS trim gets a very nice flat bottom steering wheel while all others get an equally nice round steering wheel. Premium appointments are prevalent throughout the cabin. Seats are wrapped in a beautiful black design with contrast stitching on RS trims. All other trims get premium looking two tone seats and dashboard. Most interior color choices are dark, but the massive panoramic sunroof lets in enough light to brighten the cabin and make the interior feel bigger than it is. Included in upper trims is a quality Bose sound system that is calibrated perfectly for the small cabin space. It’s something you would expect from a German luxury vehicle in a Chevy. Other great features include wireless charging and ample space for passengers and cargo.

Tech/Safety

It’s a new era for tech advancements. The name suits the vehicle when it comes to safety. Chevy threw an incredible suite of safety features into this SUV. Standard features are Automatic Emergency Braking, Front Pedestrian Braking, Lane Keep Assist w/ Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Alert, Follow Distance Indicator, IntelliBeam Headlamps, Rearview Camera, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. An advantage of buying a GM product also includes a few very useful convenience safety features like Teen Driver mode, Rear Seat Reminder and OnStar. The Rear Seat reminder is perhaps the best feature that is still not standard on other brands. Optional safety features include Adaptive Cruise Control, Rear Park Assist, Lane Change Alert w/ Side Blind Zone Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and an available higher resolution rearview camera.

Driving Experience

To this point, the Trailblazer meets expectations of the name in every way other than size. Performance is where the car loses to its predecessor, the Trailblazer SS. The most powerful engine today gets a 1.3 liter turbocharged 4 cylinder. However, this engine produces plenty of power for the size of the vehicle. It cranks out 155 hp / 174 lb. ft. of torque and pushes it to either the front wheels or all wheels. This engine returns 29/33/31 mpg city/hwy/combined, respectively, when paired with either the CVT or available 9 speed automatic on the AWD models. Also available is a 1.2 liter turbocharged engine with 137 hp / 166 lb. ft. of torque. This engine can only be had with the corporate CVT and FWD. The 1.2L is good for 28/31/29 mpg.

Throwing it around The Bronx in New York City was truly a blast. The nimble handling makes this vehicle the best driving in the segment. Aiding the experience is the incredibly low curb weight. Test for yourself and you’ll want to trade in that sedan for a more practical small SUV. Adjust to the quick steering in sport mode to avoid large potholes and imperfections in the road while maintaining a very comfortable ride. Switch the drive mode to normal and experience the relaxing weight free steering. This is definitely a car to shortlist in an area with roads like The Bronx.

Compared to its competition, the youthful Trailblazer deserves to sit up top. Chevy set out to make the SUV version of a Camaro with the Blazer, and with that solid foundation, they manifested a small SUV that carries the DNA of a Camaro at a price of $19,995. Does it live up to the Trailblazer name? Yes, in a way it does. With modern emissions regulations, one can argue that the performance of the new model is better. The 2021 Trailblazer holds its own and competes pound for pound.

Rod Wave Through the Wire

In moments of extreme trauma, sometimes the only way to get closure is to revisit that cause of that pain with a new attitude of understanding. For Rod Wave (Alamo/Geffen Records), that intense emotional release comes in his new song and video for “Through The Wire,” following his car accident earlier this summer. The TNT-produced track addresses the root of the problem for Rod: allowing his internal pain to turn into anger, which feeds into his self-destruction. He’s eternally grateful that he’s still alive and well to take care of his daughters, despite having suffered from internal brain bleeding and other facial injuries in a high-intensity crash. The Jolo-directed video features his totaled Corvette Stingray that he was fortunate enough to walk away from.

Since signing a global co-publishing deal with Sony/ATV, Rod Wave’s Ghetto Gospel has been certified Gold. It peaked at #10 on the Billboard 200 and paved the way for the sold out 22-stop duly titled tour which is awaiting its new dates due to the current global pandemic. Meanwhile, Pray 4 Love has had an incredible amount of success peaking at #1 on Billboard’s Top Rap Album chart and debuting at #2 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, earning the title for “Most Streamed Album of the Week” with 105.8 million on-demand streams. The project’s highlights include “Girl Of My Dreams,” which impacted urban radio this summer and found a spot on Spotify’s Hot Rhythmic playlist, and “Rags2Riches” was recently added to both Spotify’s Today’s Top Hits and Rap Caviar playlists. Both “Girl Of My Dreams” and “Rags2Riches” are still charting on the Billboard Top 100, with the latter going viral with over 45 million streams and over one million creates on TikTok.

Simonetta Lein, 360 Magazine

Simonetta Lein

Adapting to the new norm- with top model and TV personality Simonetta Lein.

While the pandemic has made our lives grim and boring, top model and influencer Simonetta Lein recent shoot with designer Steve Boi and her crew was a breath of fresh air. Taking care of all precautions and protocols, it was refreshing to shoot in the Philadelphia summer sun, wearing the lively colors by The Confessional Showroom NY, and shooting for the the SK8T collection like a rockstar. “Back in January when I did my latest major photoshoot, little did I know that our lives would have been challenged to the point that continuing with my normal activities would have become so difficult.

Being able to do a photoshoot during a quarantine was very challenging and at the same time so rewarding, like winning a World Cup championship.” said icon Simonetta Lein. After being named this year as one of the top 5 most powerful women in fashion together with Anna Wintour, Donna Karan, DVF and Vera Wang she recently have been awarded as one of the top 9 power women in the world by USA Today. This powerhouse continued to film her TV show – The Simonetta Lein Show via BOLD TV – despite the odds of this current time.

“I started in February going to the studios in NY and right after the world collapsed. No more studios, and it seemed no more TV show. I had to re adapt and find new ways with my team and I was able to continue with the production via remote, reaching amazing A list celebrities such as Jay Shetty, Kim Sledge, Kevin Sorbo, Robert Davi and many more. I just recently went back to the studios interviewing Fox News contributor Tyrus, actor Leon and actor Sean Kanan. What a great feeling to be back!”

Definitely Simonetta is teaching us two main things that you need to have in order to succeed during testing times – A Positive Outlook and Resilience. “I thank my team for trusting my vision- the production manager Raphael Anthony Amabile, the photographer Nicole Tienken @nicole.tienken.photo, the makeup artist Staci Hardy @blumahogany, the hairstylist @aronstyle, the hair colorist Kristin Jewell @jewello_ and my incredible designer the African American icon Stevie Boi @sbshades who made me feel like a true rockstar and @mirimari_fashion through @theconfessionalshowroom that gave me the Oscar vibe of a princess while in quarantine.”
