Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Journey To A New Planet With STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI – STORMS OF CRAIT #1!

A new adventure for Luke and Leia begins this December

Marvel’s STAR WARS comics have pulled back the curtain on fan favorite Captain Phasma, introduced the world to rogue archeologist Doctor Aphra, and crafted stories that have enthralled fans across the galaxy. This December, even more secrets will be revealed when Marvel releases STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI – STORMS OF CRAIT #1. Written by Ben Acker and Ben Blacker (Star Wars: Join The Resistance) with art by Mike Mayhew (Star Wars, The Star Wars), the new mini-series gives fans a look behind the curtain at one very special planet in the galaxy: the mineral planet Crait.

In Star Wars: The Last Jedi, it becomes a battleground between the Resistance and the First Order, but that wasn’t the first time Crait became a place where heroes and villains clashed in their fight for the galaxy. Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa once took up arms on Crait and led the rebellion as they as they searched for a new home – and a new base for the Rebel Alliance. Tying in to the eagerly anticipated December film, STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI – STORMS OF CRAIT promises to be a new and exciting adventure for all Star Wars fans – and a story that will change the galaxy as we know it.

“We’re excited for the opportunity to tell this story,” said editor Jordan D. White, “Tying the new sequel series in more tightly with the original trilogy era, and helping make the Galaxy Far Away a little more fleshed out. The Bens are a great fit in for Star Wars, as they showed in Join the Resistance, and Mike has did such great work on both covers and the Obi-Wan issues of the flagship Star Wars title, that we couldn’t be happier to have him back doing art for us.”

Find out what mysteries Crait holds for yourself when STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI – STORMS OF CRAIT hits comic shops on December 27th!

Third Rail with OZY × Racism

The exclusive poll below was conducted in advance of tonight’s episode of the new series Third Rail with OZY, premiering tonight at 8:30 pm ET on PBS and streaming at pbs.org/thirdrail.

Host Carlos Watson (Emmy Award-winning journalist, Editor in Chief of OZY.com) discusses the related topic “Is America Becoming More – Or Less – Racist?” on tonight’s episode with guests:

Amber Rose (actress/model); Alonzo Bodden (actor/comedian), Michael Williams (GA State Senator, Republican); Vanita Gupta (CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil & Human Rights) and Carrie Sheffield (Founder, Bold.)

Racism remains a prevalent problem in the United States. But many Americans do not think the responsibility to end racism is exclusive to one race. Rather, the responsibility belongs to both black and white people, according to this Exclusive Third Rail with OZY-Marist Poll, commissioned by WGBH Boston and OZY Media for the new PBS prime-time, cross-platform debate program Third Rail with OZY.

Americans perceive the solution to lie in the hands of everyone, and do not believe black people need to work harder than others to end racism. The disparity in the perception of societal advancement between blacks and whites has not improved. Although half of Americans assert that both black and white people have an equal chance of getting ahead in today’s society, by more than 10-to-one Americans say white people have a better chance than black people of doing so. And, this disparity has changed little over the past 20 years.

The national survey was conducted by The Marist Poll in advance of this week’s Third Rail with OZY debate, airing Friday, September 15, 2017 at 8:30pm ET (check local listings) and streaming on pbs.org/thirdrail, which asks: Is America becoming more, or less, racist? Third Rail with OZY, hosted by Emmy Award-winning journalist Carlos Watson, is a seven-part cross-platform series. Each week, expert and celebrity guests engage with Watson to debate a timely, provocative topic, incorporating audience and social media input and exclusive national polls.

The onus to improve race relations is on everyone, according to 60% of Americans. However, 22% of residents believe the responsibility belongs to white people, and 7% say black people need to work on correcting the problem.

A majority of residents (56%) do not think people of color need to work harder to end racism while 37% believe people of color need to do more. A racial divide exists. African American, (57%) and Latino (42%) residents are more likely than white Americans (32%) to say that people of color need to work harder to end racism.

“The survey calls to mind the reflections of Martin Luther King Jr., ‘The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice,’” says Dr. Lee M. Miringoff, Director of The Marist College Institute for Public Opinion. “But, in its totality, the results demonstrate the arc is bending very slowly, at best.”

Half of Americans (50%) think white and black people have an equal chance of getting ahead in today’s society. This is little changed from 46% of U.S. residents who expressed this view in a 1997 CBS News/New York Times survey. Forty-one percent compared to 43% two decades ago say white people have a better chance at advancing. Only 4% think black people have the edge in getting ahead, similar to 5% in the 1997 survey.

Again, opinions differ by race. While a majority of white Americans (54%) say both black and white residents have an equal chance of advancing, nearly two-thirds of African Americans (65%) and half of Latinos (50%) report white people have the advantage to move ahead in today’s society.

Americans perceive racism to be a bigger issue in American society than sexism. Fifty-four percent of U.S. residents consider the nation to be more racist than sexist. Twenty-four percent think America is more sexist than racist. One in ten (10%) say the United States is neither racist nor sexist, and 12% are unsure. Both men (48%) and women (61%) think the country is more racist, but interestingly, men (28%) are more likely than women (19%) to consider it to be more sexist.

“Racism continues to be a defining issue for this nation,” says Denise Dilanni, series creator and Executive in Charge of Third Rail with OZY. “The topic has dominated the public and political arenas in the past year, which is why on Friday we’ll debate the question: Is America becoming more, or less, racist?”

The exclusive Marist/Third Rail with OZY poll asked Americans: do President Donald Trump’s comments about people of color such as Muslims, immigrants, or African Americans make it more or less acceptable for people to make racist comments? A plurality (46%) says it makes it more acceptable, including 63% of African Americans and 53% of Latinos. Thirty-six percent of Americans think the president’s remarks make it less acceptable. Nearly one in five (18%) are unsure.

Democrats (67%) and independents (49%) are more likely than Republicans (20%) to believe President Trump’s comments about people of color make it more acceptable to make racist comments. Fifty percent of Republicans say his statements make it less acceptable.

More than half of Americans (51%) think the anti-immigration movement is simply about securing the country’s borders while 35% believe it is really an anti-people of color movement. Fourteen percent are unsure. Again, Democrats (63%) African Americans (57%) and Latinos (46%) are more likely than Republicans (5%) and white residents, (29%) to think the anti-immigration movement is about race.

Kline Academy of Fine Art

Against All Odds…An Art School That’s Thriving

Los Angeles based Kline Academy of Fine Art Celebrates 10 years!

Open House: Saturday, September 16th 5:00pm to 9:30pm – live classical trio & Sunday, September 17th noon to 5pm – live painting demo by Natalia Fabia

In a city where representational art skills are but a distant memory and a bad word, one Fine Art Academy has carved out not only a niche but also a reputation for building art skills for many “wanna-be” LA artists. Kline Academy of Fine Art, established in 2007, reached a milestone this year. Starting with only 10 students and a few classes, Kline now boasts over 100 students in a given month, classes every day, 12 exceptional pro-artists / instructors and visiting professional artists from around the world.

“Your frustration ends at our front door” is the school’s motto. The academy’s focus is on teaching skill- based techniques to pre-teens through adults of all levels. These are skills that have been passed down from master artists to students for centuries, continuing a linage of teaching the craft of painting that is taught in very few places in the world. While most Universities have “thrown the baby out with the bath water,” by pushing conceptual art, Kline Academy has made learning real skills the foundation for all their art classes. Founder and Owner Cheryl Kline stresses that “When a student has the skills to draw or paint whatever they can dream up, and do it well, then they can succeed and be proud of their work and that’s why we teach excellent drawing and painting skills at our Academy.”

The success of Kline is not just a story about a true entrepreneurial resolve but also about dreams that do come true with hard work and a fighting spirit. When Kline purchased the building on Motor Avenue in 2007, the economy was still going well. Money was tight and as her personal painting sales dropped off, Kline found herself waiting until a student paid for classes then running to the DWP before the electric was turned off. When the crash hit in 2008, her interest only loan was about to expire, she was turned down by 11 banks and the one who finally granted her the loan insisted on testing her for HIV and drugs! In the meantime, she was threatened by the owner of a rival school that he would fight to put her out of business. Complicating life more, her Mother was becoming increasingly ill due to Parkinson’s disease and medical bills were mounting. Working double time, she injured both hands getting ready for an exhibit and had to tape brushes to her arms in order to complete the work and continue to teach.

But despite all obstacles, Kline, her team and the students have thrived. Many students have received acceptance into top art programs around the world after learning the skills they needed to fulfill their creative passions at Kline and others have started promising art careers. Kline students are currently being featured in first-rate galleries and art magazines, as well as winning awards for their work all over the globe. Kline Academy staff believe that the victories of their students are the greatest measure of their success and with that in mind they continue to spread this creative passion to anyone who wants to learn the skills to thrive as an artist.

Come and celebrate the fruits of their labor:

The Kline Academy of Fine Art, Grand 10 Year Celebration Open House:

GLASS ANIMALS LAUNCH NORTH AMERICAN HEADLINE TOUR TOMORROW AT SEATTLE’S WAMU THEATER

Run Will Include September 21 Show At Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium And October 5 Concert At NYC’s Radio City Music Hall

How To Be A Human Being Shortlisted For UK’s Mercury Prize

Band Will Perform At Austin City Limits Festival On October 14

Glass Animals will launch their third North American headline tour of 2017 tomorrow, September 16, at Seattle’s WaMu Theater. The run includes a show at Los Angeles’ historic Shrine Auditorium (September 21) and the band’s first concert at Radio City Music Hall in New York City (October 5). Additional East Coast dates include shows at Agganis Arena in Boston (October 7) and the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC (October 8 & 9). Glass Animals will cap off the outing with a performance at Austin City Limits Festival on October 14. See below for itinerary. Tickets are available at http://glassanimals.eu/.

The band, which was shortlisted for the 2017 Mercury Prize, continues to pull out all the stops during its live performances. DIY Magazine, reviewing a 2017 show in London, said, “From the second frontman Dave Bayley bounds on stage with limitless energy, Brixton Academy is theirs, and the Oxford quartet proceed to give it one hell of a party.” The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette noted, “[the] band has honed its act at all the major festivals — Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Glastonbury, etc. — and it showed in the high energy that began as soon as it hit the stage with ‘Life Itself,’ the percussive dance track that opens the new, second album, ‘How to Be a Human Being.'”

A broken ankle couldn’t keep Bayley from crowd surfing during the band’s main stage set at Coachella, cited as a festival highlight by Billboard, which praised Glass Animals’ “dynamic rendition” of “Gooey.” In July, a storm briefly interrupted their sold-out show at Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre, but the band returned to the stage and got the crowd dancing again. Local NBC affiliate 9 News observed, “You always take the risk of rain or shine at Red Rocks, but Glass Animals made it worth every drop.” Their riveting live shows have contributed to Glass Animals’ incredible global growth, resulting in sold-out excursions throughout the U.K., Europe and Australia.

Glass Animals are touring in support of How To Be A Human Being (Harvest Records), which debuted in the Top 20 of the Billboard 200 and topped the iTunes Alternative Albums chart in the U.S. and Australia. The album introduced fans to a diverse group of fictional characters, inspired by real people the band encountered while on tour. Glass Animals have continued to bring these characters to life with interactive sites for “Life Itself,””Youth” and “Pork Soda,” as well as a video game app for “Season 2 Episode 3.”

The single “Agnes” has over 10 million streams on Spotify worldwide. The official video, directed by Eoin Glaister, and can be seen HERE. Track “Pork Soda” has upwards of 13 million Spotify streams, and the official video, which can be seen HERE, has more than one million views. NPR Music placed “Life Itself” on its list of “Songs We Love” while “Youth” appeared on their “10 Songs Public Radio Can’t Stop Playing” list. How To Be A Human Being is the follow-up to Glass Animals’ 2014 debut, ZABA, which contained the hits “Gooey” and “Black Mambo.”

Cleveland native Machine Gun Kelly releases a nostalgically vintage based video for his new single “ Let You Go.” Reminiscent of a classic 1960s variety show, this visual gives fans even more reason to tune in to catch more of MGK. While the rapper released his third studio album bloom in May, it is now available on vinyl HERE. bloom features guest vocals from James Arthur, multiplatinum recording artist Hailee Steinfield and rap trio Migos. 2017 seems to be ending on a high note for the “Bad Things” singer who was recently named the face of John Varvatos’ 2017 fashion campaign.

Kia × Celebrity Racing Challenge

Kia Makes the Ultimate Fashion Statement at New York Fashion Week with Star-Studded Racing Challenge

Alex Rodriguez, Candice Swanepoel and Other Trendsetting A-Listers Got Behind the Wheel and “Raced the Runway”

Fashion designer Brandon Maxwell, supermodels Candice Swanepoel and Joan Smalls, baseball legend and CEO of A-ROD CORP, Alex Rodriguez, writer and TV host Derek Blasberg, and social media superstar Cameron Dallas, gathered in New York City to race the all-new 2018 Kia Stinger.

Supermodel Candice Swanepoel took home bragging rights as the celebrity that “worked the runway” faster than her celebrity competition.
The Kia Stinger is the highest performance vehicle in Kia’s history, and can go 0 to 60 in just 4.7 seconds. Pier 92 was converted into a fully functioning race track, including features like timing lights, viewing platforms, VIP tents and a winner’s circle making it the perfect atmosphere to pit competitors against each other and the clock.
