How Big Tech Is Destroying Our Press

Ahead of today’s House Judiciary Hearing, the Save Journalism Project held a press call with Rep. Mark DeSaulnier (CA-11); journalists Laura Bassett, laid off by HuffPost; and John Stanton, laid off by BuzzFeed; and Neil Chase, CEO of CalMatters and former executive editor of The Mercury News and East Bay Times.

The monopolistic power of big tech companies like Google, Facebook, and Apple is destroying the economic model of the entire journalism industry, whether its traditional circulation newspapers or digital news outlet.

This week’s hearing on how digital platforms affect news organizations marks the much-needed return of congressional antitrust scrutiny to big tech companies, which have gained a monopolistic position that lets them dominate the digital advertising marketplace and distribute massive amounts of content from news publishers on their platforms without paying to produce the content.

Rep. Mark DeSaulnier (CA-11) said, “I don’t think there’s anything more important right now than this issue. Being from the Bay Area, I have been to every big tech company. After meeting with them, I think it’s time to make it easier for licensing like the music and movie industries have done. We are members of Congress, you are journalists, and we have to keep an appropriate Constitutional distance, but there are policy proposals in our legislation that protect the freedom of the press and are necessary to keep the industry alive. When I was first elected to the Concord City Council there was a reporter who was consistently in the front row keeping officials accountable. His presence made local government work, and it is vital that we protect the journalism industry to make sure leaders are kept accountable and communities are informed.”

Laura Bassett, a reporter who was laid off by HuffPost, commented, “In the first few months of 2019, I was one of about 2,400 journalists and media staffers who lost our jobs. Even though I was aware the cuts were coming, it was still shocking to be laid off after nearly a decade in my newsroom. The reason for the mass layoffs, I found out, was that Big Tech companies like Google and Facebook are dominating the digital ad market, swallowing about 60 percent of all revenue and making it difficult for journalism to survive. News publishers are being forced to give a cut of their ad revenue to these companies- revenue that would otherwise go to hiring journalists. Because a well-funded news media is vital to a healthy democracy, the public needs to be aware of Big Tech’s death grip on publishers. At the House Judiciary Hearing today, lawmakers in Congress need to address this bipartisan issue and find legislative solutions that regulate tech giants and restore fairness to the digital ad market. Journalists are taught not to be the story, but as Big Tech’s digital ad monopoly benefits off of our revenue streams, it’s incumbent upon us to fight for the future of our industry. One or two companies should not have the power to cripple the free press.”

“After 20 years of covering Congress and the White House for BuzzFeed, I found out layoffs were coming in a tweet from the Wall Street Journal,” said John Stanton, former Buzzfeed Washington Bureau Chief before being laid off. “Despite the great work my colleagues and I were doing for the publication, there simply wasn’t enough money. Because stories that lead to changes in state and federal law, jailing of criminals and exposing wrongdoing — cost money. Money that is increasingly gobbled up by Google and Facebook. To try to survive, slashes had to be made. To entire desks. The reason advertising revenue has fallen so steeply is that Google and Facebook dominate the digital ad market, consuming more than 60 percent of all revenue. And their share is growing, because they devour nine out of every ten new dollars that are spent on digital advertising. Big Tech’s monopoly has a death grip on publishers. Congress needs to be discussing how to regulate this imbalance and restore competitive fairness in the digital market.”

Neil Chase, CEO of CalMatters and former executive editor of The Mercury News and East Bay Times, added, “We all believe journalism is central to democracy. Newspapers have experienced a decline not in the past five years, not in the past ten or fifteen years, but in the past seventy-five years. Newspapers have been declining since World War II. The problem is that we are essentially sitting on a 200 year-old product, but are trying to compete with new and changing technologies. Newspapers have maintained a monopoly for over 200 years. This is how people historically gained all their information; how they found where to buy clothing, where to buy their groceries, and where they got their news. With the change in how society works, all we have is the news. In order to solve this problem, we need a multi-pronged approach. We need to engage in philanthropy, which my company is already focused on this aspect. We need newspapers with benevolent leaders, not the leaders that we have at some major news organizations now. We need support from legislators. And, we need people paying for the news. We need a lot of support from a lot of different places in order to make this work.”

Who is Tyler Jacob?
East coast born and bred, Tyler Jacob is a singer/songwriter who got his start in the industry after being discovered singing on the trains of NYC. At the age of 5 years old, Tyler Jacob started singing and performing in school plays. Tyler says that “I’ve always wanted to sing. It was a natural thing for me.” His family recalls little Tyler putting on shows in the family living room. “I don’t come from a family of singers. I’m the only one.” But it wasn’t until his freshmen year in high school did he realize others thought he had a gift when he was accidentally placed in a choir class. “The choir teacher asked me to sing, so she could classify my voice.” The rest is history. After the choir teacher heard Tyler’s voice, she had him transferred to Creative Arts High School (CAHS) in Camden, New Jersey. Tyler’s passion to sing, write and perform his own music, in English and Spanish, pushed him after he graduated from CAHS to move to the Big Apple to pursue his singing career. Since then he has gone on to be a season 1 cast member of VH1’s “SIGNED,” performed on many stages across the US, opened up for Grammy Award winner, Brandy Norwood, and logged studio time with Carvin & Ivan (Chris Brown, Musiq Soulchild, Mario), and Andrea Martin (Leona Lewis, Monica, Mary J. We’re Still Here Together

Santana lead vocalist Andy Vargas has a new collab with R&B/soul singer Frankie J entitled “We’re Still Here Together,” to be released June 21, along with a lyric video. The soulful track celebrates long-lasting love that triumphs the test of time. Vargas, fresh off the heels of a successful Spring tour and Las Vegas residency, will perform a headlining show with Santana at the Hollywood Bowl on June 24. Check out “We’re Still Together” here.

“I am excited to release this new single with fellow vocalist and music producer Frankie J.  Frankie and I crossed paths several times throughout the years, but never had a chance to really connect until a few years ago when we worked together on a charity initiative in San Diego.  We have always had a mutual respect for each other’s talent.  We love the same style of music and we anticipated the opportunity to work together one day.  Writing this song with Frankie J and Adrian Cisneros was a perfect synergy. And bringing in the very talented Rodney Alejandro who produced the song with Frankie J, drove the song home with his incredible production skills. I believe that this single really captures the essence of my sound, the Souleros sound, which is the sound of the New Chicano Soul,” said Vargas.

Vargas struck world-wide fame over a decade ago when he became the lead-singer for the iconic rock band, led by 12-time GRAMMY Award-winning artist Carlos Santana. Twenty world tours later, Vargas is embarking on a solo project with his signature Latin R&B sound – Souleros – a blend of “soul” and “boleros” influenced by classic funk and R&B/soul music.

2019 is an exciting and action-packed year for Vargas. He is embarking on a worldwide tour with Santana in celebration of 50 years of Santana’s music, the 50th Anniversary of Santana’s Woodstock performance and the 20th Anniversary of Santana’s ‘Supernatural’ album.

The “Supernatural Now” tour with the Doobie Brothers kicks off June 20 at FivePoint Amphitheatre in Irvine and includes the Hollywood Bowl on June 24th and a series of New York area dates in late August.

He will release a full-length solo, debut album in August, preceded by several singles, including a guest appearance from Carlos Santana on a new version of “Oye Como Va”.

Vargas’s previous single “The Beat” was featured by ESPN’s “Music Of The Month” this year and was released in both English and Spanish versions.

His masterful soul-tinged voice has also graced stages with Enrique Iglesias, Patti Labelle and   Taboo of the Black-Eyed Peas.

Can air extend an EV’s range?

The energy efficiency of electric vehicles (EVs) can be improved by 3 to 7% with proper tire inflation, according to a recent ExxonMobil study.

The first-of-its-kind study followed three identical EVs, each with different tire air-loss rates, as they each traveled 5,400 miles crisscrossing all sorts of environments in the United States, including city streets, small towns and rural roads, for six months.

The results showed that properly inflated tires enhanced EV energy efficiency by as much as 7% to extend vehicle battery range.

What if there were a way to increase an electric vehicle’s (EV’s) energy efficiency by 3 to 7 percent? A recent ExxonMobil study has revealed that proper tire inflation can do just that.

Back in 2018, the company embarked on a first-of-its-kind study that tracked EVs to understand the impact tire inflation pressure has on vehicle range. As the inventor of halobutyl rubber, the technological wonder that helps keep tires properly inflated, ExxonMobil wanted to take a hard look at the challenges EVs encounter.

The study followed three identical EVs, each with different air-loss rates. Each car traveled 5,400 miles, crisscrossing all sort of environments, including city streets and remote roads, for six months.

The results? In a nutshell, choose a tire that will stay better inflated over time. It will not only extend the life of the tire, but also the overall energy efficiency.

Optimizing your Cannabis Consumption

By Max Simon

Every day, I take cannabis to manage my ADD. I also run the world’s largest cannabis education company – so I’m obviously in the pro-pot camp. Yet, even as a cannabis believer, I’ve also had periods where I’ve been an over-consumer. In those moments, I’ve been foggy, off my game and less sharp than desired. While the downsides of this haven’t been nearly as bad as the sensationalized media that surrounds it, I do think it’s time that we start discussing what happens when people over-consume cannabis, and how to avoid that from becoming a commonplace practice. Below are five aspects of over-consuming cannabis that most people aren’t talking about. These points will help you understand overconsumption of cannabis and how to prevent it.

1.) Respect the Potency of Cannabis
The first and most important golden rule with cannabis is: “Respect the potency of this plant.” For example, when I was building the Chopra Center products division, we were working with an enormous suite of natural substances and herbal supplements like ashwagandha and delta 8 gummies and carts from Area 52. With some of this stuff, you could take 1000 mg, and you wouldn’t notice any adverse effects. Contrast that with cannabis. Even 10 mg can be an extremely potent experience on the mind and body, especially for somebody who’s new to the plant. Take 50 mg, and you’ll be entering an entirely different universe in the cosmos. I fully support a person’s freedom to do what they want with their body, but I also think that we have a responsibility to be conscious and mindful cannabis consumers.

2.) Too Much THC

When we talk about overconsumption of cannabis, we’re usually talking about THC and its mind-altering properties. These psychoactive experiences can be fantastic at the right place and time. But when someone is too high, all day, every day, it’s likely that you will begin to experience some of the negatives of overconsumption. For example, THC affects your working memory and parts of the brain that are useful for everyday functioning. So, if you’re consuming too much THC, you might find yourself being more forgetful, or making silly mistakes. Heavy consumers may develop a tolerance to these effects, but that doesn’t make them go away. You need to get really honest with yourself about your habits and pay attention to how your consumption impacts your daily performance. Once again, these side effects can be mitigated by consuming a little bit less, or consuming strains with less THC. Indica plants contain more CBD and less THC so a good place to start would be Zamnesia northern lights.

3.) When Cannabis Becomes a Crutch

Cannabis can be great for whenever you’re feeling stressed, anxious, uncomfortable or bored. However, when you’re constantly using it as your go-to solution in these moments, it can also become a crutch. This isn’t to say that cannabis doesn’t have mental health applications as a tool to better manage depression or anxiety or simply to relax. However, are you using cannabis to lean into life or to numb out? If you lean on the herb a little too hard and a little too frequently, it can trap you in a loop of complacency, where you’re comfortable zoning out from problems or challenges in life instead of addressing them. Too much cannabis, too often, can rob you of your motivation or your courage to face difficult situations or better your circumstances. Using less can still help with anxiety or depression without that side effect of trapping you in your comfort zone. So ask yourself: “What is that big thing you want to do in life, and how can cannabis better serve you as a tool rather than a crutch?” I believe a happy and successful life is about growth and development, which requires facing an element of discomfort.

4.) The Biphasic Effects of Cannabis

It turns out that there is already some solid science behind why it’s better to avoid over-consuming cannabis. The biphasic effects of cannabis come into play when we’re training professionals on how cannabis consumers can best optimize their dosage levels. For example, I use cannabis for my ADD. Up to a certain point, it helps. However, if I take too much at the wrong time, it will actually make my ADD worse. The same thing is true no matter what you’re using cannabis for – diminishing benefits after a certain dosage threshold has been exceeded. Once you pass that threshold, you will get fewer benefits with cannabis and more side effects (such as fatigue, anxiety, mind-racing, and paranoia). This can also be the case over the long term when the cannabinoid receptors in your body are flooded and down regulate because they simply don’t need anymore. Instead of being cannabinoid-deficient, you have swung too far the other way and your body is now cannabinoid-saturated. The name of the game is balance. This is why a lot of heavy consumers – once they develop enough courage and discipline to take a break – usually feel surprisingly fresh and more energetic. Those who cut back also find that lower tolerance levels allow them to get by with much less.

5.) Do a Cannabis “Check-In” with Yourself

If you want to experience the maximum benefits from cannabis, it’s important to make sure that it is adding value to your life as a tool and a wellness substance. Regular cannabis consumers need to look in the mirror every so often and be honest. Are things on the up and up? Or do you need a break or cut back a little? Right now, the world is paying very close attention to cannabis and its benefits and downsides. The world should see the value of this plant and the benefits this plant can provide.

Advances That Can Prevent Stroke

Latest advances in stroke prevention replace older, less reliable methods. However, nearly half the country is still 10 years behind the times, says cardiologist Joshua S. Yamamoto, medical director at Foxhall Medicine in Washington, DC.

According to Dr. Yamamoto, the four major advancements everyone should know about are—

  1. The implantable cardiac monitor (made by Abbott/St Jude), which is a paper-clip-sized micro-chip that continuously monitors your heart and remotely alerts your doctor about significant irregularities.  “This is truly superior to the clunky wearable gear from the past,” says Dr. Yamamoto. As of 2019, it’s Medicare-approved for in-office insertion.  No preparation necessary.
  2. “DOACs,” Direct Oral Anti Coagulants.  This new class of “stroke prevention medications” is a million miles ahead of the old meds, like Warfarin/Coumadin.  This is not your Father’s Oldsmobile! The new meds are revolutionary. Here are the main benefits
    • Superior at preventing strokes
    • Lower bleeding complications
    • Have a stable dose that doesn’t require lab tests or constant adjustments (Nearly half the people taking Coumadin are not on the right dose, especially as the dose can change from week to week depending on your diet)
    • Starts immediately and stops or can be turned off quickly (Warfarin takes days to start and days to “reverse”)
    • Excellent absorption and efficacy with once-daily dosing
    • The only medications that prevent strokes for both atrial fibrillation AND arterial disease
  3. High resolution ultrasound (like for carotid studies) are much better than old-school imaging and can show disease progression. “In other words,” says Yamamoto, “this tech will let you know not just when to start treatment, but whether the treatment you are on is working well enough (for you) – all non-invasively and without radiation.”
  4. Functional testing, i.e., an exercise echocardiogram is an improvement on standard stress testing. “It is never just a pass/fail prospect. It tells you how effective your current therapy is and enables you to make adjustments.”  You don’t have to be an elite athlete to have a functional test, and again, there’s no invasive procedures, dye, injections or radiation.
