Grace Davies – Amsterdam

Grace Davies shares beautiful ballad Amsterdam taken from her forthcoming ‘Friends With The Tragic’ EP out in June through The Orchard/Sony Music.

Taking a different sonic route from previously released critically acclaimed singles ‘Invisible’ and ‘Addicted To Blue’; on ‘Amsterdam’ the 23-year-old composer, pianist and singer songwriter showcases her ability to artfully document the human condition. Produced by Adam Argyle (Dua Lipa, James Bay, Rita Ora) and composed by piano, the bewitching slow ballad uses Grace’s unique voice and soulful delivery to shift emotions.

“Amsterdam is my Jolene,” says Grace. ‘It’s incredibly honest. It’s about being so frickin’ in love that it hurts, and you don’t trust that something won’t go wrong. Amsterdam touches on jealousy within a relationship and normalises it. Not an unhealthy jealousy, but one that we all feel from time to time, and should allow ourselves to feel – without thinking that we’re ‘crazy’! Of course we may get jealous that the person we love most  in the entire world is doing things without us, and of course the thought crosses our minds that we may possibly lose that person to someone else (or somewhere else). We’re human, and I think it’s a beautiful thing.”

The release of ‘Invisible’ and ‘Addicted to Blue’ this year marked the start of a new era in Grace’s career and cemented her reputation as a songwriter, racking up a million streams, landing countless places on influential tastemaker playlists and championed by a wealth of tastemakers. Grace has been isolating by her piano during lockdown and will be live at home performing tracks from the EP and taking requests from fans @ 7:30pm Friday 8th May.

Having independently released her debut EP at the age of 18, Grace Davies garnered the support of tastemakers including BBC 6 Music, became a staple fixture on BBC Radio Lancashire, as well as picking up coveted national ‘BBC Introducing’ artist support. The 23-year-old composer, pianist and singer is a songwriter is able to make the personal universal. With a poet’s ease, her honest lyrics come alive through her soulful, unique vocals and haunting melodies; traits that saw her ascend to the final of X Factor 2017. In a first for the programme, Grace shook up the format and confidently showcased her own songs at every stage, generating millions of streams and a top 2 iTunes chart position.

A true artist, Grace oversees every element of her music. Following extensive time in the studio writing for other artists as well as herself, Grace’s unmistakable voice and fearless songwriting seems set to secure her future. Her ‘Friends With The Tragic’ EP will be released in June.

TURBO – HEART STOP

A truly original and fearless artist, Calgary-bred, singer, songwriter and producer Turbo, combines the gritty authenticity of outlaw country with hard-hitting hip-hop inspired beats and rhymes. On “Heart Stop”, his debut single for 10K Projects/ Homemade Projects/ Internet Money Records, out today, the musical maverick shows the sheer force of his emotionally raw lyrics, along with his razor-sharp instinct for crafting unforgettable hooks. “Heart Stop” reveals Turbo speaking his unapologetic truth about living fast with no regrets, set to a backdrop of gorgeous acoustic-guitar work supplied by labelmate Alec Wigdahl.

“Everybody wants to party with a rockstar but they got no idea what it’s like to be a rockstar,” said Turbo. “I’m the real fucking deal, outdoing everyone including myself. Hate me or love me, it’s easy makin’ that Heart Stop.”

Born Nicholas LaMonaca, Turbo grew up on country thanks mainly to his father (a famed guitarist in the international bluegrass scene), but felt drawn toward rap music and obscure electronic genres like hardstyle, the fusion of techno and hardcore. At the age of 12 he started making his own music, a move heavily inspired by Avicii’s progressive-house classic “LE7ELS.” “Once I heard that song I couldn’t get enough of it,” Turbo recalls. “I was so obsessed, I ended up downloading FL Studio to try to recreate the melody on my own.” Although he instantly discovered a natural talent for production, Turbo put music aside for several years, until he graduated high school. “On my 18th birthday I bought a laptop, keyboard, and set of speakers, and figured I’d have rappers come in and do their thing,” he says. “But after a while I just started winging it, making beats and rapping over them myself.”

As he pushed deeper into his artistry, Turbo began mining inspiration from left-of-center country singers like Colter Wall, a Canadian musician he stumbled across while stocking the shelves at his full-time liquor-store job. “Colter Wall has one of the raspiest, rawest, rudest voices I’d ever heard in my life, and it just completely took me over,” he notes. From there, Turbo tapped into his own country roots and created a full-length project titled Sixth Gear, a 2019 release featuring his breakthrough single “Light Speed.” Soon after YouTube curator Astari shared the song’s video on his channel, “Light Speed” caught the attention of 10K, quickly paving the way for Turbo’s signing to the label, along with Homemade Projects and Internet Money Records.

PUMA X THE HUNDREDS

Sports company PUMA has joined with community-powered streetwear brand The Hundreds to debut a new line of footwear, apparel and accessories. Inspired by the transformation of streetwear over the last three decades, ‘The ‘90s Cliques’ collection features bold graphic-driven pieces with heavy color blocking. Garments can be broken down into four key styles: preppy, jock, party crew and 20/20.

The PUMA x The Hundreds Windbreaker rocks a plaid print that would look at home at any ‘90s concert, with a half-zip neckline and welt pockets. For a more contemporary look, try the camo PUMA x The Hundreds Reflective Windbreaker paired with PUMA x The Hundreds Reflective Shorts. Each clique is also present in the collection through an extensive range of unique tees, hoodies, shorts and tracksuits.

The 20/20 crew is represented by the RS-Pure x THE HUNDREDS shoe, which merges past and present sneaker trends with a monochromatic black camo print and a suede Formstrip. The new line also incorporates PUMA classics like the Palace Guard, Performer Mid, Clyde and Leadcat, with a look tailored to reflect each clique.

Highlights from the accessories collection include the PUMA x The Hundreds Bucket Hat and PUMA x The Hundreds Cap with a flat brim, as well as two takes on the classic streetwear backpack.

California-based The Hundreds was founded in LA in 2003 by Bobby Kim and Ben Shenassafar. It is a classic streetwear brand and a media platform dedicated to global street culture. Their guiding focus, people over product, is also the main force behind the PUMA x The Hundreds collaboration. By exploring the progression of ‘90s street style over time, designers got a chance to create products for the consumer of today as well as tomorrow.

The  PUMA X The Hundreds collection ranges from $35 – $140 and will be available April 30, 2020, on thehundreds.com and May 7, 2020, on PUMA.com and select retailers.

ODESZA × GOLDEN FEATURES

GRAMMY-nominated duo ODESZA and groundbreaking Sydney producer Golden Features have announced their new project BRONSON with the launch of two contrasting singles “HEART ATTACK (feat. lau.ra)” and “VAULTS” out now on Foreign Family Collective and Ninja Tune. The double release serves as the primer to the trio’s forthcoming self-titled debut album, set for July 17. Both tracks offer two distinct looks into BRONSON, embracing an alternate identity for the trio in which they discovered a newfound limitlessness and ability to explore new soundscapes, free from any expectations attached to their respective projects. “HEART ATTACK” finds a weightless dreamy soundscape in lau.ra’s vocals (of Ultraísta), while “VAULTS” explores a gripping intensity by way of distorted basslines and edgier cinematic tones.

Listen to “HEART ATTACK (feat. lau.ra)” and “VAULTS” here.

On “HEART ATTACK,” BRONSON reflects that it “was the first vocal track we worked on for the record. It was one of those ideas that came together really quickly and felt very natural while writing with lau.ra. Ultimately, it was a confluence between the two distinctive sounds of ODESZA and Golden Features. It served as a turning point in the writing process of the album and an inspiration for the other vocal tracks to come.”

Nearly three years in the making, BRONSON originally formed through the personal connection that ODESZA members Harrison Mills and Clayton Knight shared with Golden Features’ Tom Stell. Out of mutual admiration on a creative level, they formed a digital record box of shared sounds sent across time zones and continents through Dropbox files and FaceTime calls. The product of those collective efforts culminated in 2018 when the trio spent a week, in the remote reaches of Berry, Australia, recording what would later become the first BRONSON album.

Furthermore, “VAULTS” became an anchor in the writing process. As BRONSON observes, “it was one of the earlier instrumentals we completed and it acted as a cornerstone to the overall sound design and aesthetic of the album. The track really proved a departure from each artist’s own respective styles and set a definitive change in direction for the BRONSON project. We knew we had something special here and it served as a guiding light for the rest of the record.”

As the debut releases, “HEART ATTACK” and “VAULTS” are indicative of the opposing light versus dark elements that flow throughout the 10-track album. The record strikes a beautiful balance between intense, emotive instrumental-heavy tracks and cathartic, melodic vocal songs, with additional guest features from Gallant and Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs. An unexpected yet welcome addition includes Harrison and Tom themselves providing the vocals for “CALL OUT,” a song that lulls the listener into tranquility.

The album reflects on their respective needs to challenge personal struggles, both internal and external. Moreover, the trio recognized that their own battles were merely microcosms of the surrounding world. The hope was to craft a body of work that was reflective of that duality of lightness and darkness inherent to the human condition. The result is a project with an extraordinary profundity and universal relatability. One can connect to it on a deeply personal level and find relief, no matter what they may be confronting in their own life.

ODESZA and Golden Features have combined streaming numbers in the billions and hold multiple gold and platinum singles and albums respectively. They’ve remixed and collaborated with an array of impressive artists including Sia, Leon Bridges, Regina Spektor, Katy Perry, Charli XCX and others. Both leaders in the live circuit, they’ve cumulatively reached millions of fans on global headline tours, with ODESZA selling out massive venues including Los Angeles’ Staples Center, New York’s Barclays Center, London’s O2 Academy Brixton, as well as headlining world-famous festivals such as Coachella, Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, Outside Lands and Lollapalooza.

The album is available now to pre-order and pre-save digitally and pre-order the physical LP at the official BRONSON store.

Stay tuned for more new music from BRONSON off their self-titled debut album, out July 17.

FESTIVAL NAPA VALLEY

When Festival Napa Valley, California Wine Country’s flagship music festival, made the decision to postpone its 15th Anniversary Season to 2021, its artists refused to be silenced. Led by two alumni of the Festival’s Blackburn Music Academy – conductor Zach Salsburg-Frank and violinist Sienna Peck – 126 past and present Festival Napa Valley musicians joined forces to create an extraordinary virtual performance of the famous “Va, pensiero” chorus from the opera Nabucco by Giuseppe Verdi.

“Although we will not have a summer season this year, our pioneering spirit is alive and well and we are creating innovative ways to continue to bring music to our audiences,” said Richard Walker, President & CEO of Festival Napa Valley.

The innovations include the Festival Napa Valley Remote Ensemble, made up of: instrumentalists and singers from 26 states, 8 countries, and 5 continents representing two dozen orchestras, ensembles, opera companies and music conservatories such as the Young People’s Chorus of New York City, Juilliard School, San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, San Francisco Opera Orchestra, Toronto Symphony, and many more.
“Va, pensiero was a perfect choice of music, a moving hymn that has served as a rallying song of hope and resilience for people around the world,” said Charles Letourneau, the Festival’s Vice President and Director of Artistic Planning.

Each musician recorded their part on a smartphone while following the virtual conductor. The group was synchronized into one glorious collective performance. It was dedicated to the essential workers whose heroic efforts safeguard the health and safety of our communities. The performance can be seen on Festival Napa Valley’s YouTube channel: http://youtu.be/jHV9wLvNYxA

Added Letourneau: “Our technical engineer Wei Wang created a visually and musically stunning virtual performance that proves digital art can be as moving as a live performance in these extraordinary times.”

Festival Napa Valley’s 15th Anniversary Season will take place July 16-25, 2021.

Road Safety Tips Every Truck Driver Should Know

Long-distance truck driving can be a great job, but it can also be very dangerous. Every year, there are over 500,000 accidents involving trucks on American roads. More than 10% of all traffic accidents in the US involve a trucking accident. Anthem can help facilitate those accidents and claims. Driving long haul can be very, very physically and mentally, and a moment’s lapse in concentration can have fatal consequences. 5,000 trucking accidents each year lead to death, so it is so important to take every measure necessary to drive safely.

This article lays out four road safety tips that every truck driver should know. If all else fails, contact this Orlando Truck Accident Attorney.

1. Do Not Drive If You are Tired

Long haul driving is extremely extraneous and tiredness is one of the main contributing factors in traffic accidents. If a driver is tired they may momentarily lose concentration or even fall asleep, both of which can lead to a crash. Being overly exhausted and staring for hours at the road can even lead to hallucinations which can cause a driver to make a mistake. Over 70,000 accidents a year come as a result of drowsy driving and these lead to more than 800 deaths. The expert attorneys at http://www.kraftlaw.com/, who represent drivers in all kinds of accidents, told us that it is vital for long-distance truck drivers to ensure that they have plenty of sleep before doing a long drive or an accident can easily occur for which they may be culpable. Whether you are a long-distance truck driver or a parent on the way home for a school run, your legal case will be significantly weakened if you were found to be overly tired when involved in a crash. Many truck drivers consume large quantities of caffeine or other stimulants to stay awake and alert, but these can distort judgment and affect reaction times so being well rested before the trip is a much safer method.

2. Make Sure Your Truck is Fully Operational

A huge number of traffic accidents are caused by a mechanical failure and so it is vital to make sure that your truck is fully operational and that the brakes, lights, and other important safety features are all working perfectly. It is far better to check your truck before the trip rather than having to stop and find somewhere to make repairs. Not only may you not be able to find a place that can do the necessary repairs, but even if you do, the delay will put you behind schedule. This may cause you to speed which will increase your chance of an accident. Not only should you personally check your truck each time, but all commercial trucks should be regularly serviced by professional mechanics to make sure that they are up to road standards.

3. Rest Every Few Hours

As well as getting lots of sleep before the journey, take regular rest stops along the way. This gives you a chance to recharge your batteries and to switch off mentally for a little while. Maintaining the concentration levels necessary to do a long drive is incredibly taxing so regular rests are very important to make sure that you don’t lose focus. Plan these stops on your route before you head off to break the journey up into manageable chunks. Budget the stops into your predicted driving time and make the most of each one. Whether you are stopping for a bite to eat, for a cigarette, or a nap, make sure that you are fully refreshed before you set off again. Meal times are a great time for rest stops and if you are driving a route you know well, you probably already have your favorite eateries to stop off at on the journey. Take your time and you will be well-rested and ready to continue.

4. Don’t Exceed the Speed Limit

Make sure you plan the journey well and give yourself enough time so that you can take those important rest stops and don’t have to speed. More than 50% of crashes are caused by speeding or careless driving and it can be so tempting to exceed the speed limit when you are falling behind schedule. When you are planning your route, assume there will be heavy traffic, roadblocks, or other obstacles and take them into account when estimating your journey time.

Long-distance truck driving can be a fantastic way to see the country and to spend some time with your thoughts. To make sure that you finish your journey safely, it is vitally important to follow all appropriate safety measures. Being well-rested, making sure your truck is working properly, and planning your route and time carefully are all key to safe long-distance truck driving. Take these tips into account next time you are planning a long haul journey.

Challenging Behaviors

By Rachel Schwartz, Watson Institute

Challenging behaviors represent one of the most difficult and frustrating attributes of autism. While not every individual with autism displays challenging behaviors, those who do often struggle to gain access to opportunities and independence in their communities of choice. In the face of challenging behaviors, many parents, caregivers, and practitioners sometimes feel powerless in how to best respond. This article is intended to serve as a resource by providing practical tips.

Tip #1

  • Behavior is communication. An individual’s behavior communicates to the environment his or her wants and needs.  Listening to those needs will allow us as practitioners, parents, and caregivers to better understand and respond appropriately. Furthermore, understanding what an individual communicates will allow for teaching new, appropriate ways to communicate the same thing. For example, a child throws items when he or she needs help. Rather than providing help after a child throws, teaching the child to appropriately request help will build a new skill and reduce throwing.

Tip #2

  • Isolate challenging behaviors as actions. What movement does the child make when he engages in the challenging behaviors? What actions do I see? Using actions words becomes a starting point for planning. Using action words keeps the focus on what the behavior communicates to the environment and how stakeholders can help change that behavior. Changing the lexicon of challenging behaviors from meltdown to movement may allow for more reflection, collaboration, and positive programming.

Tip #3

Consider yourself a co-conspirator. Changing behavior involves reflecting on how the environment sets the stage for challenging behaviors and how we as stakeholders, caregivers, and parents, respond to those behaviors.  Behavior doesn’t occur in isolation; behavior happens as a response to the people and activities in an environment. Consider recording what occurs after an individual engages in a challenging behavior. Whatever occurs immediately following a challenging behavior serves to reinforce it and allow it to continue to occur. Learning how to adapt the environment can prevent challenging behaviors from occurring and promote more appropriate, positive behaviors. Changing challenging behaviors and ensuring that challenging behaviors do not stymie equal opportunities involves taking equal responsibility for the behaviors occurring.

Final Thoughts

My work in the field of special education continues to push my perception of challenging behaviors and presumed competence.   One of the greatest lessons I have learned is that challenging behaviors do not change overnight. Behavior change occurs gradually over time, typically in fits and bursts. It takes persistence to work with and change challenging behaviors. However even more than that, it takes compassion and empathy.  Incorporating both will build an environment of kindness, mutual respect, and trust for all involved.
