Michael E. Jordan – Entrepreneur of the Year Finalist

From very humble beginnings, Michael E. Jordan has elevated the UNRL brand with core values, quality of product, and a spirit of giving back to the community.

UNRL announced that its founder and CEO, Michael E. Jordan, has been selected as a finalist for the prestigious Entrepreneur of The Year® Award, Heartland Region, presented by Ernst & Young. Based in St. Paul, Minnesota, UNRL is an athletic apparel brand that specializes in creating functional athletic clothing.

After an intensive nomination and selection process, Jordan was identified as one of 36 finalists within the seven-state Heartland region. This award honors game-changing business leaders who rise above challenges using ingenuity, courage, and ambition. Nominees are evaluated based on six criteria: entrepreneurial leadership; talent management; degree of difficulty; financial performance; societal impact and building a values-based company; and originality, innovation, and future plans.

Jordan founded UNRL in his mother’s basement seven years ago with an investment of a mere $300 and has since grown the company exponentially year after year. Today, UNRL has 19 employees and is on track to reach 8 figures in annual sales. All of this was done with hard work and entrepreneurial spirit, without any outside investment or business loans.

UNRL products are sold in various retailers throughout the country including Scheels Sporting Goods, PGA Tour Superstore, various NHL, and NFL Pro Shops. One of their most notable apparel partnerships is with the social media powerhouse Barstool Sports. UNRL takes great pride in the quality of their product and their attention to how business is operated.

“It’s an incredible honor to be selected as a finalist for this award,” said Jordan. “I don’t view this as an individual achievement, this is a testament to my team. It’s been a collective effort with 100% buy-in from every member of our team. Without that, we wouldn’t be here today. I believe we are growing this business the right way, and it is meaningful to be recognized for that. I’m very grateful for all the support Ernst & Young has provided throughout this process.”

Jordan said that he has high expectations for the UNRL brand in the future; articulating plans to surpass the $10 million annual revenue marker within 12 months and reach the $100 million milestone by 2029. In doing so, continuing to donate 15% of net proceeds to nonprofits including the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital.

“I am very competitive by nature. I’ve been an athlete my whole life,” said Jordan. “I pride myself on continuous improvement and doing things the right way to leave a positive legacy on the industry. The Entrepreneur Of the Year® Award has my respect because it’s a challenge against the best in the business, and we have something to prove. I want to win this.”

Regional winners of the Entrepreneur of the Year Award will be announced in late July. The National Entrepreneur of the Year Award will be handed out on November 13.

GOLFPASS PREMIERE

A demanding public has turned cooks into culinary artists – and not just at the world’s finest restaurants. No longer are country clubs places “where chefs go to die,” but creative incubators for some of the best in the business.

Fairway to Table presented by ClubBuy, a new series premiering today exclusively as part of the GOLFPASS digital membership program, will be a culinary adventure exploring some of the nation’s finest country clubs, while introducing the artists behind the apron who are creating local flavors and fantastic feasts for their members.

Hosted by chef and author Michael Ponzio, each episode of Fairway to Table will showcase the culinary program at the best country clubs across the U.S. Ponzio currently serves as the executive chef for the Union League Club of Chicago, following six years in the same role for the world-ranked Platinum golf club, Medinah Country Club. He also is the author of the cookbook, Cibo: Anybody’s Guide to Italian Cooking.

The premiere episode of Fairway to Table will feature Austin Country Club, one of the oldest existing clubs in Texas and home to one of the greatest golf instructors who ever lived, Harvey Penick. Executive Chef Bob Burns, a self-professed “hunter-gatherer,” has dedicated 42 years of his life to the private club industry and his passion for food to Austin C.C.’s menu, which features prime beef, direct-sourced seafood, wild game and premium vegetables. The episode follows Chef Burns, as he flexes his culinary creativity with a dish featuring Asian-inspired Texas Brisket with Korean Quinoa, Fried Brown Rice, Gochujang and duck egg. Later, Chef Ponzio rolls up his sleeves and takes to the streets of Austin to visit one of the city’s landmarks, Louie Mueller Barbecue and third-generation pit master Wayne Mueller. The two build one of the restaurant’s iconic platters: dinosaur bone-in short rib, beef brisket and pork sausage.

Future episodes of Fairway to Table will visit Hazeltine National (May 12) in Chaska, Minn., and Olympia Fields Country Club (June 2), located just outside Chicago – both steeped in golf lore and hosts to some of golf’s biggest events and major championships throughout the years.

Improve Your Golf Skills With These Tips And Tricks From The Pros

Golf is a sport of the mind more than it is a sport of the muscle. In this game that has players of all ages, your performance depends more on technique more so than any other sport. There are so many nuances to golf and understanding that, then you will understand there are many ways to improve your game. Here are some tips and tricks that will help you boost your game, and lower that stroke count.

Try Swinging On A Plane

To help build consistency and fluidity on your golf swing, it is a good tip to consider the plane on which you are swinging the golf club. By trying to swing on a plane, you will find that this can be helpful for those that struggle with control and curves. The basics of the plane on your swing have you, the golfer, create an imaginary plane. This plane can be imagined as going through the golfer. During your swing, your golf club will appear parallel to the plane from the top of your swing, and right through to the point of contact. By keeping a plane on your mind when you are swinging your club, this can create a foundation, especially needed for beginners or those that are having trouble with consistency.

Posture And Positioning

Some golfers, especially beginners tend to focus too much on the swing and not enough on the stance. Like many sports, golf has basics and fundamentals. One of those fundamentals is having the proper stance and posture. Your posture will create the ideal height for your swing to feel more natural and make. This will give you the appropriate balance to create a seamless and smooth swing. To achieve this, make sure to create a good positioning with your feet, knees, and shoulders. Remember to keep your mechanics tight on your swing and continue right to the follow-through. It takes time to get your muscle memory in tune, but consistency is key to your swings.

Slow Down Your Tempo

Golf is a game of finesse, not power. Yes, everyone wants to have the furthest drive off the tee, but you aren’t just playing the game with a driving range. You need to play the game at your pace. This can translate to your golf swing, concentrating not on power but accuracy, swinging your club under control at all times. And it might even force you to sacrifice some yards off that swing, but you’ll make it up with keeping your total strokes low. At the end of a day at the course, you would rather come up a little short but on the green, than have driven that ball far and away from where you ideally want to be.

Relax

Golf swings are motions that require a lot of muscle movement. A lot of players focus too much on the power or technique of their swings that they forget to relax. This will give you the most and best quality of range of motion not only from your arms and upper body but also will translate down to your hips. Relaxing will also help prevent injuries as you are not tensed up and restricting your body and forcing uncomfortable movement.

Manage The Game

Golf is both a mental and physical sport. It is a game where your mind will get as much work if you allow yourself to see and approach the game that way. As mentioned previously, you can’t always rely on the power and shouldn’t be simply swinging wildly on your drives. Instead, take your time before you even get to the tee. Look at the hole at hand, and understand the best approach to it. Managing the game by making smart and calculated decisions will allow you to minimize the times you get yourself into problem situations. Choose to take shots that are low risk when beginning and learning the mechanics, take shots and use the clubs you are comfortable with. Play to your strengths and understand where your game is lacking. These decisions about playing smart will help you keep your scores low while you continue to improve your game.

With so many things that you can work on, golf is more a sport about improving your own game. If you can acknowledge where your limitations are, you can pinpoint those flaws to adjust and correct your game. This will involve changing both your physical motions and your mental approach, and soon you’ll see that improvement in your ability of the sport.

DeChambeau Dominates in Dubai

Bridgestone Golf Tour star Bryson DeChambeau continued his and the brand’s winning ways with a convincing 7-shot victory at the PGA European Tour’s Omega Dubai Desert Classic this weekend. The win is DeChambeau’s first ever title abroad and the 7th professional victory of his career. DeChambeau’s victory in Dubai complements a run of 7 wins on the PGA TOUR and 1 on the LPGA Tour over the last 5 months for Bridgestone.

Using Bridgestone Golf’s TOUR B X balls, ‘the golf scientist’ blew away the field in Dubai with prodigious driving and pinpoint approach shots throughout the week, on his way to finishing a record 24-under par for the tournament.  Starting the final round with a 1-shot lead, DeChambeau once again proved he’s one of the best closers in the game – firing an 8-under par 64 that included 7 birdies and an eagle to finish with the largest margin of victory in the event’s history.

“We are excited for Bryson to get his first-ever professional international win this weekend and his 4thworldwide victory in the last 7 months,” said Dan Murphy, President & CEO of Bridgestone Golf. “What the Bridgestone brand is experiencing at the Tour level right now is almost surreal.  When you add this Tour success to the incredible reception our brand received this past week at the PGA Merchandise Show, 2019 is shaping up to be a special year for Bridgestone Golf.”

DeChambeau switched to the TOUR B X in late 2017 after extensive experimentation revealed a significant impact on his driving, iron play, short game and putting.  He also wears Bridgestone’s new TOUR B FIT Glove featuring high-end Cabretta leather with FIT technology to ensure a soft feel, consistent grip and excellent durability.

The TOUR B golf ball series is a result of Bridgestone’s continued commitment to providing premium tee-to-green performance to players of varying swing types. Bridgestone owns over 800 golf ball patents and fully leverages the company’s heritage of excellence in polymer science worldwide to design the industry’s most cutting-edge golf balls.

Having recently been fit into the lower spinning TOUR B X ball and new JGR Driver, Kuchar proved the new combination to be a winning one, taking the title at the 2018 Mayakoba Golf Classic. The win south of the border was Kuchar’s first since 2014 and the eighth of his career.

Kuchar said about the win and about Bridgestone, “That Bridgestone ball is really something. How many wins is that for the TOUR B family in the last few months? Thanks to Bridgestone for being in my corner. I am excited to get back to the Tournament of Champions in a few weeks.”
