LIL MOE 6BLOCKA RELEASES NEW RAMBUNCTIOUS SINGLE AND VIDEO NOTHIN

Listen to Nothin here and watch the video here!

Rising Chicago rapper Lil Moe 6Blocka continues his hot streak with another speaker-rattling song and vivid video, Nothin. Listen here and watch here. The single arrives on the heels of recent hits like Leave Em Stretched and the simmering street anthem Risky featuring 22Gz.

The bass-heavy anthem is another example of Moe’s verbal dexterity and ability to turn witty phrases into stylish storytelling. He again takes aim at his opps, warning them to stay out of the way because he isnߣt slowing down any time soon. The track is hypnotic and succinct, with Moe letting loose a barrage of bars before the beat fades. Nothin offers another view of Moe’s post-drill style, bruising but effortlessly floating with the practiced flow of a seasoned veteran.

The video, directed by Billy Kauck, finds Moe in his hometown of Chicago, cruising in a black-on-black car, spitting bars outside of the window. Though the car is flashy, Moe spends the video in an abandoned parking lot, shrouded in gray. The visual helps highlight Moe’s grit and hustle, taking moments to celebrate his come-up, but always returning to his roots. He’s alone and focused with a one-track-mind. He’s showing off the finer things in life, but he’s not letting anyone else get in his way.

Nothin is the latest in a string of exciting new releases from Lil Moe 6Blocka and another example of how the teen is capturing the imagination of his city. Thoughtful, intense songs like Ion Know have inspired tastemaking platforms like Lyrical Lemonade and Daily Chiefers to name Moe among the region’s hottest rising rappers. The Risky remix with 22Gz won even more acclaim, garnering attention from HotNewHipHop, Uproxx, and STUPIDDOPE. HipHopDX even called the original version of Risky one of the best hip-hop songs of 2021. Lil Moe is the voice of a new generation in Chicago, a bridge between the drill scene of the 2010s and the next crew of superstars primed to take over the Windy City. He’s been surging through the streets garnering millions of views on his videos. With songs like Nothin out and more on the way, Moe clearly has no intentions of letting up anytime soon.

About Lil Moe 6Blocka

Lil Moe is Chicago’s newest star poised for the spotlight and, at just 16 years old, he’s hungry to prove his skyrocketing singles are the future. I see myself on every billboard in every city, everywhere. Everybody’s gonna know my name, he says with a confidence that he’s earning every day. On early effortlessly high-octane hits like Risky, Ion Know, What I Say, and 6Blocka, Moe already seems like a fully formed star. His videos are unfiltered and depict his life on the streets garnering millions of views. His voice growls with the aggression of Windy City legends like Chief Keef and G Herbo, but Moe relies on inventive wordplay and unparalleled charisma to stand out in a busy scene.

At 16, it’s nothing but a number for Moe, and he’s hell bent on proving himself in the music he’s making. Moe’s new songs reflect this confidence, but he’s aware the past is never too far behind. It’s this combination of unbridled optimism and the knowledge that things can always be worse that keeps him barrelling forward. Anyone who’s doubted me before probably wants to be close right about now. They’re trying to call back, and I ain’t trying to talk right now, he says.

Purdue Engineers Discover Cooling Technology

Hiking gear fabric has cooling effect that may make your next smartwatch more comfortable

Watch a video about this research on YouTube or read the full research paper here

As smartwatches become more powerful, they will generate more heat. To prevent burns or rashes, what if a material touching the skin could feel as cool as metal, but also be flexible enough to be worn on the wrist?

A team of Purdue University engineers has discovered that a type of fabric typically used for hiking gear has remarkable heat-conducting properties on par with stainless steel, potentially leading to wearable electronics that successfully cool both the device and the wearer’s skin.

The material is made of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fibers, which are sold commercially under the brand name Dyneema. These polymer-based fabrics are marketed for their high strength, durability and abrasion resistance, and are often used to create body armor, specialty sports gear, ropes and nets.

Purdue heat transfer researchers recently investigated other uses for the fabric, namely as a cooling interface between human skin and wearable electronics (see a video about this research on YouTube). Their research is published in Scientific Reports.

This fabric has great flexibility and thermal properties. If you stitch it differently, weave it differently or start blending the polymers with different materials, you could tailor the fabric’s properties to different applications, said Justin Weibel, a research associate professor in Purdue’s School of Mechanical Engineering.

If a material has a high thermal conductivity, that means heat dissipates through the material more easily. There are many heat-dissipation methods for fabrics, from the simple (moisture-wicking); to the intricate (conventional fabrics with heat-conducting strands woven in); to the very complex (liquid-cooled garments worn by astronauts).

Your next smartwatch or virtual reality headset could be more powerful than your current smartphone, so we need to dissipate heat away from the electronic components to keep the wearer comfortable, said Aaditya Candadai, who recently completed his Ph.D. at Purdue doing research on this project. These polymer fabrics have amazing thermal properties that can keep these devices cooler and avoid low-degree skin burns.

The team discovered these properties by benchmarking Dyneema against conventional cotton fabrics, as well as polyethylene sheets in rigid non-woven form. They obtained several different commercially manufactured fabric samples and even wove their own samples from raw Dyneema fibers.

The researchers tested the fabric samples at the Birck Nanotechnology Center in Purdue’s Discovery Park. The samples went into a small vacuum chamber, with a metal wire laid across the surface as a heat source.

Using an infrared microscope, they could generate detailed data about how much heat was being conducted through the fabric’s surface, and in which direction. They found that the Dyneema fabric has 20-30 times higher thermal conductivity than other fabrics, comparable with steel.

The team also tested the fabric’s flexibility, which is important for wearable electronics.

There’s a balance; we don’t want to make thermally conductive materials that are so stiff, people won’t be comfortable wearing them, Candadai said. These polymer fabrics are in that sweet spot of having good conductivity and good flexibility.

The fabric naturally has these properties with no additional circuitry or other equipment, but the researchers also have plans to test how weaving in different materials affects the fabric.

We could integrate other types of fibers – carbon fibers, metal fibers – to achieve different combinations of properties, said Amy Marconnet, an associate professor of mechanical engineering.

As part of his work investigating the heat-conducting properties of fabrics, Candadai won an Art-In-Science award in 2019 for an infrared camera image showing how the fabrics transfer heat. The team’s research was performed within Purdue’s Cooling Technologies Research Center, a graduated National Science Foundation Industry/University Cooperative Research Center with support from industry leaders in thermal materials and electronics.

PornHub Announces ‘Remastured’ Archive Collection

Pornhub Announces Remastured, An Initiative That Restores Century-Old Erotic Films to Titillating Technicolor with Modern AI Technology, The adult entertainment platform used machine learning and over 100,000 adult videos and images from its library to educate the AI in the subtleties in colorizing vintage porn for the modern age

Pornhub, the premier online destination for adult entertainment, today announced the launch of Remastured, an innovative project that employs the latest AI (artificial intelligence) technology to restore some of the oldest – and steamiest – erotic films ever produced. The company used machine learning and over 100,000 adult videos and images from its library to colorize vintage porn for today’s modern audience. Viewers are transported back in time to experience 20th century-old erotic films featuring voluptuous Victorians and silent seductors in titillating technicolor with The Remastured Film Library.

Since the moment someone figured out how to record moving images, people have been making adult movies, said Pornhub. We thought it was important to not only preserve but modernize these films, and we are very excited to include this selection of artfully restored vintage material to our library, allowing users to indulge in old school erotica from a bygone era.

View the SFW Remastured campaign video here.

It is common practice in film to colorize and restore even the most antique footage. However, the algorithms generally available are lacking since standard deep-learning models are trained with millions of SFW images, not nude or even pornographic ones.

By introducing the AI to Pornhub’s massive content library, it learned a naughty new trick; how to detect the subtle shades of penises, nipples, and turn-of-the-century bush. Transforming these centennial masterpieces into modern content resulting in The Remastered Film Library; A collection of 20 visually stunning scenes ranging from the 1890’s to the 1940’s, featuring the work of film pioneers like Thomas Edison and George Méliès and elaborate plots of the modern porn aficionado’s favorite categories:  co-eds, masseurs, orgies, threesomes, foursomes, spankings, cosplay, strap-ons, and more. The variety is impressive, but it’s the kinky content that will keep you coming back for more.

The process – which utilized several AI algorithms with limited human intervention – included:

  • Preparation of images: noise reduction, sharpening and contrasting
  • Colorizing using deep learning
  • Boosting to 60 frames per second (fps)
  • Rescaling to crisp 4K resolution
  • Digital remastering: cleaning artifacts, stabilization, and flickering reduction
  • Remastering audio or adding a new audio track

To develop the machine-learning algorithm, we paired black and white images, along with the colorized version. Through testing, the AI was able to generalize its comparative findings and colorize images provided previously to colorizing images it had never seen.

Pornhub’s Remastured campaign is a collaborative initiative with creative agency Officer & Gentleman and creative studio Espada Santacruz.

Pornhub has a history of supporting the preservation of early erotic films. The company previously partnered with the Museum of Sex in New York City in 2019 to present STAG: The Illicit Origins of Pornographic Film. Exclusively curated by the Museum of Sex, the interactive exhibition featured films demonstrating the major aesthetic and thematic trends that shaped the early history of illicit film. Later that year, Pornhub partnered with Maccarone fine art gallery in Los Angeles to present The Pleasure Principle, a multi-disciplinary and pan-generational all female art show where artists were invited to share work depicting their respective interpretations of pleasure. The show included work from Marilyn Minter, Louise Bourgeois, Tracey Emin and more. Most recently, Pornhub hosted the online premier of SHAKEDOWN, the critically-acclaimed documentary art film centered around the Black lesbian stripper scene in early Los Angeles by filmmaker and vanguard artist Leilah Weinraub. The digital event included a viewing of  the documentary and a series of Q&A live chats with Weinraub to simulate the experience of watching the film together.

The Queen the Greatest YouTube Series

Queen The Greatest: a celebration of 50 of the greatest moments from the Queen story so far. A 50-week YouTube series celebrating key moments in Queen’s history reminding us why Queen and their music continue to be loved across the world. Episode 9: Queen: 1976 Somebody To Love – Freddie’s Greatest Hit? Watch HERE Queen The Greatest Watch Episodes 1-8 HERE

Was it better than Bohemian Rhapsody? The man himself thinks it might be… After the incredible worldwide success of A Night At The Opera and Bohemian Rhapsody,  all eyes were on Queen to see what they would do next. For Freddie Mercury inspiration came from one of the world’s finest singers and ended up with him, Brian and Roger becoming a Gospel choir. Queen The Greatest’s ninth episode celebrates what is undoubtedly one of Queen’s greatest classic hits, the gospel inspired masterpiece, Somebody To Love.

Having set such a high benchmark with their A Night At The Opera album, all eyes were on Queen to see what they would come up with next. As ever, the band refused to stand still and were intent on exploring new musical paths. For Somebody To Love Freddie found inspiration in one the world’s finest singers to create this Queen classic.

Brian May: Freddie wanted to be Aretha Franklin, you have to bear this in mind, and that explains everything. He loved Aretha. And, this was his Gospel epic. It kind of followed in the steps of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ in the sense that we were building up these multiple vocal parts, but this time we were being a Gospel choir, instead of being an English choir.

Freddie Mercury: And there’s me going on about Aretha Franklin, sort of made them go a bit mad, I just wanted to write something about that kind of thing. I was sort of incentivized by the gospel approach that she had on her albums, the earlier albums.

Brian May: Freddie came in very well prepared with a lot of vocal parts and we just worked our way through it. There was a very good feeling. I always remember thinking, yeah, this is going to be something great.

For many Bohemian Rhapsody was the greatest song Freddie ever wrote, but according to the man himself, he didn’t necessarily agree.

Freddie Mercury: People will, obviously, no matter how hard you try, will think in terms of your past hits. I really thought, Ok, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ is a big hit, but as far as my writing ability is concerned, I think I can write better. And I just looked at it from that point of view. For my estimation, I think a song like ‘Somebody To Love’, from the writing aspect, (is) a better song.

Somebody To Love  just narrowly missed out on the top spot in the UK charts, peaking at number 2. But the song quickly became a powerhouse on stage, as witnessed by the band’s performance at the Milton Keynes Bowl in 1982 featured ;in this episode.

Ten years later, at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert, the song had its place firmly cemented in Queen history thanks to the unforgettable performance by Brian, Roger, John, the London Gospel Choir and, of course, George Michael. n the U.S., Somebody To Love has been certified double Platinum by the RIAA.

The song’s subsequent inclusion on the Five Live EP featuring performances from the Tribute Concert by Queen, George Michael and Lisa Stansfield saw it finally top the UK charts in 1993.

Next will see the release of Queen 1976: Hyde Park – Picnic by the Serpentine. Keep up to date with the Queen the Greatest YouTube series here!

Rottet Studio Acquires Houston Headquarters

Houston architect and interior designer Lauren Rottet, closes on property for a new Houston headquarters, Rottet’s plan includes designs for new construction along with restoration of an historic building

Lauren Rottet, FAIA, FIIDA, internationally celebrated architect, designer and founding principal/president of Rottet Studio, has closed on two adjacent properties totaling 1.72 acre located in the Briar Hollow neighborhood, which encompasses a house by iconic Houston architect Howard Barnstone built in 1960. Noted for his modernist style, Barnstone’s clients included Houstonians John and Dominique de Menil, who funded the Rothko Chapel, which was also designed by Barnstone with Eugene Aubry and Philip Johnson.

Houston’s population has grown exponentially in the past decade, as noted in the recent 2020 census and Rottet’s investment in her hometown is no coincidence. During the pandemic she decided to take steps in the development of her own property and purchased these unique lots with plans to restore the Barnstone structure as well as build an adjacent office. “We don’t want our new building to look like we’re trying to match a mid-century modernist style,” says Rottet about her concept for the new build, adding, “We want it to be constructed of glass because the site is so beautiful.” The remodeling of the Barnstone-designed three-story house, which was modeled on Mies Van Der Rohe’s Farnsworth House, will include a space that will serve as a showroom and accommodate furniture and accessories from the Rottet Collection. The new building is being envisioned as a new iteration of a hybrid office and will also include space for Rottet Studios’ design team and administrative staff. While Rottet does not anticipate everyone coming into the office every single day, “We need a desk for everybody, as well as a parking space,” she states. Detailed plans for the property are pending. Purchase price undisclosed.

Marvel Launches New Black Panther Series

MARVEL UNVEILS NEW BLACK PANTHER COMIC BOOK SERIES LAUNCHING THIS AUGUST! Academy Award-winning writer John Ridley and artist Juann Cabal launch T’Challa’s next revolutionary chapter this summer!

As Black Panther’s intergalactic saga makes its stunning conclusion next Wednesday, Marvel Comics has revealed that the next thrilling chapter for T’Challa, Wakanda, and the Marvel Universe will begin this summer! Officially announced today in The New York Times in an exclusive interview, Academy Award-winning writer John Ridley (12 Years a Slave) will helm Marvel’s next Black Panther comic book series alongside Marvel’s Stormbreaker artist Juann Cabal (Guardians of the Galaxy), beginning with Black Panther #1 this August.

Building from the epic last chapter of Ta-Nehisi Coates’ groundbreaking multi-year Black Panther run in Black Panther #25 next week, Ridley will kick off an action-packed espionage story that will impact everything in T’Challa’s life and have ramifications for the entire Marvel Universe!

In this new ongoing series, secrets from T’Challa’s past have come back to haunt him. Fresh from returning from his adventures in space, Black Panther receives an unexpected and urgent message from a Wakandan secret agent. T’Challa must race the clock not only to save his agent, but also to keep his true agenda under wraps. Because if the truth comes out, it could cost T’Challa everything…

It’s a hybrid espionage-superhero thriller, but at its core, it’s a love story, Ridley told The New York Times. And I don’t mean just romantic love, although there’s some of that as well. It’s love between friends.

We’re coming out of a summer where we saw Black people fighting for our rights, standing up, fighting in ways that we haven’t had to do in years, Ridley added. And it was really important to me after the year we had where we can have these conversations with Black people and we can use words like love and caring and hope and regret and all these really fundamental emotions that everybody has.

Don’t miss Black Panther’s historic moment in Black Panther #25 next week, and be sure to pick up Black Panther #1 when it hits stands this August! Stay tuned to Marvel’s website for more details.

Japan’s Sightseeing and Museums

Japan, A Culture Expressed Through Art and Nature.

For more information on JNTO visit their website here. Be sure to also check out all of the attractions listed here.

Although it is globally renowned for technological innovation, Japan’s history, traditions and cultures have always been intrinsically linked to the country’s rich and varied natural landscapes.

From the best places to observe springtime Shibazakura, pink moss, and where to embrace the art of Shinrin-yoku, forest bathing, to exhibitions and glamping which celebrate the strength, beauty and versatility of natural materials. Japan’s wealth of natural treasures, including one of the best stargazing spots in the Northern Hemisphere, is a must-do, must-see on any itinerary.

We invite you to travel outside of the city limits of Tokyo to the glorious regions beyond, all of which have their insider secrets. Here we have rounded up eight of the exciting cultural and outdoor experiences for you to enjoy. We promise that our time apart will make travel experiences all the more exciting when cross-border travel is resumed. We are looking forward to seeing you in Japan.

Nature: Flower Trip Across Japan

Sunflowers, wisteria, tulips, hydrangeas, violets, camellias. The nation’s famed cherry blossom is not the only flower worth travelling to Japan to see. The nation celebrates a range of scene-stealing flowers in different locations throughout the year.

For a burst of sunshine, head to Hokkaido’s Hokuryu Sunflower Village, home to an epic sweep of 2 million sunflowers which burst into bloom beneath blue skies every summer. Whereas in Tonami Tulip Park in central Japan (Toyama Prefecture), red, white and purple tulips take center stage at every spring; while ajisai hydrangeas, marking the arrival of the rainy scene early summer, are celebrated at countless nationwide festivals (Bunkyo Ajisai Festival at Tokyo’s Hakusan Shrine is a highlight).

Another unmissable bloom is the nation’s treasured pink moss, known as Shibazakura, which comes alive on mountain slopes during spring as seen in the above photograph taken in front of Mount Fuji, Yamanashi Prefecture.

One event worth timing a visit to Japan for is the Fuji Shibazakura Festival (normally from mid-April to mid-May, Yamanashi Prefecture) with as many as 520,000 pink moss spanning the base of Mount Fuji, whose snow-capped triangular peak looms tall above the blooms.

Shibazakura Takinoue Park in the northernmost Hokkaido region is also worth visiting because the park transforms every spring (from early May to early June) into an otherworldly 100,000 square-meter expanse of gradated shades of pink, accompanied by a string of local festivities and food markets.

Another of Japan’s most scenic Shibazakura spots is the Chausuyama Highlands in Aichi Prefecture, a two-hour drive from Nagoya, a popular snow-covered ski destination during the winter months, with ski lifts carrying springtime visitors above hillside fields of 400,000-plus pink moss flowers (from early May to early June).

Tradition: Pottery developed by Nature

Japan has long been famed for its ceramic heritage, shaped through the centuries by the nation’s deep ties with nature. From organically finished earthenware to the smooth sheen of white porcelain, a spectrum of ceramic styles has been nurtured in Japan. The above photograph shows Arita ceramics crafted by Sakaida Kakiemon, Inoue Manji and Imaizumi Imaemon.

Highlights include the works of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, including Bizen-yaki, from Bizen in Okayama Prefecture, famed for its glaze-free abstractions, fired at intensely high temperatures.

Among Japan’s oldest pottery hubs is Shigaraki in Shiga Prefecture, a one-and-a-half-hour train ride from Kyoto, long esteemed for its quality stoneware, in particular large vessels crafted from strong local clay.

Mashiko in Tochigi Prefecture, reachable from Tokyo by train in as little as two-and-a-half-hours, is another mecca for pottery lovers, with more than 250 studios and 50 ceramics shops (it’s also home to the serene former home and studio of deeply influential Shoji Hamada, designated as a Living National Treasure and a member of Japan’s mingei crafts movement).

Arita, Saga Prefecture, is the place to head in southern Japan and it is only a one-and-a-half hour train or bus ride from Fukuoka, Nagasaki and Saga airports. The word Arita means one thing in Japan: white porcelain. The small town in Kyushu is renowned for more than four centuries of exquisite porcelain heritage and admirers of Japanese crafts and ceramics would do well to plan ahead for a visit to Arita Ceramics Fair between the last week of April and the first week of May. One of Japan’s largest ceramics markets, a network of around 500 stalls typically stretches from the main station and through the center of the town, showcasing an eclectic range of ceramics from top local kilns.

Innovative contemporary projects have also placed Arita firmly on the global creative map in recent years. The projects that have done this range from the respected series of Arita Collection 1616 / arita japan brand, by designer Teruhiro Yanagihara (who recently opened a sleekly designed showroom in Arita) to the Creative Residency Arita program which attracts artists and designers from across the globe.

Nature: Stargazing in Kozushima

One good place to take in starry spectacles is in the Northern Hemisphere, in areas with as little light pollution as possible. That could now include Kozushima Island that is a pine-painted volcanic island orbited by white sand beaches in the Izu Islands, a one-hour flight or four-hour jet-ferry ride from Tokyo.

After removing more than 400 streetlights in the summer of 2020, the island was made an official Dark Sky Park by the International Dark Sky Association on December 1, 2020, the second in the country following Iriomote-Ishigaki Island in the southern Okinawa Prefecture.

Kozushima Island’s top observation points might include the summit of Mount Tenjo or the gentle sands of Nagahama beach, with its picnic spots, barbecue pits and natural hot springs, but anywhere outside of the main town should do the trick.

The main annual event is the Perseid meteor shower in the middle of August each year. This is when planet Earth passes through the sparkly tail of the Swift-Tuttle comet, producing up to 60 shooting stars an hour as small meteors burn up, skimming the upper atmosphere.

Nature: Treeful Treehouses Sustainable Resort

Hidden in the wilds of sub-tropical Okinawa, on a bend in the Genka River, is Treeful, a collection of four fantastical treehouses to be opened in June. Comfortably situated in nature, all have floor-to-ceiling windows, air-conditioning and wooden decks with beautiful views across a forest of banyan trees and ficus. At dusk, sit on your suspended terrace surrounded by rare wildflowers.

The entire Treeful Treehouse Sustainable Resort has been designed to be as sustainable as possible; the team are rebuilding a 19th-century water mill at nearby Shizogumui waterfall and helping to save rare Ryukyu mountain turtles.

Everything is solar-powered, and the resort is also wheelchair accessible, including the communal Aerohouse which connects to the rooms via a series of floating walkways.

Inside the Aerohouse there are relaxation spaces, a kitchen and dining area, as well as toilets and showers (ecologically designed but not in an obvious way). Wake up early and head out onto your balcony to watch the sunrise over the jungle canopy.

Later, you can try yoga, stand-up paddle board at a golden beach or kayak to a nearby island for a piña colada. Nights should be dedicated to stargazing. Look out for Ryukyu flying foxes and puppy-faced fruit bats.

Relaxation: Hot Spring Bathing

It’s hard to keep your clothes on when travelling around Japan’s famed onsen hubs, and there are many of them.

One example is Kusatsu Onsen in Gunma Prefecture, where guests can walk along old streets in cotton yukata gowns before soaking in a string of public onsen baths, including the famously restorative steaming Yubatake hot water fields. Because the water temperature in Yubatake is too hot for bathing, staff stir the hot water with a wooden paddle in a traditional cooling practice known as Yumomi. You can see a Yumomi show or even try it out for yourself at the Netsunoyu bathhouse.

Meanwhile, Nozawa Onsen in Nagano Prefecture, a popular ski hub with a bathing heritage dating back more than 1,000 years, offers the best possible après-ski activity, a free soak in 13 public onsen facilities scattered across the town.

Beppu in Oita Prefecture is a southern city wrapped in volcanic mountains on one side and a bay on the other, home to a network of more than 2,000 hot spring onsen baths of ten-plus various spring qualities, which are all celebrated annually in the springtime Beppu Hatto Onsen Festival. It’s worth noting April as a good time to visit the region, when it will stage the five-day festival which kicks off on onsen thanksgiving day.

The decades-old event’s dramatic scene stealer is Ogiyama Fire Festival which involves setting fire to a large swathe of Mount Ogi behind Beppu to alert (not very subtly) the onsen gods to the end of winter and start of spring. Hot spring soaking also takes center stage with the Beppu Bath Marathon encouraging visitors to take a dip in 42 onsen baths in the space of five days, while those who manage 88 baths are hailed as onsen masters.  Those who are less ambitious can simply enjoy a soak in the restorative hot waters of their choice at around 100 local onsen, which are open for free during the festival.

The main highlight for many, however, is the climax of the event: the iconic Yu-Bukkake Matsuri festival procession, with traditional dancing and portable mikoshi shrines paraded down streets before being sprayed with, you’ve guessed it, onsen water.

Art: Culture Gateway to Japan

A string of bold new artworks will greet future visitors when they arrive at airports across Japan, as part of Culture Gate to Japan, a cultural program organized by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan.

The works of 29 creatives from across the spectrum, from contemporary installations to manga, are exhibited at seven airports and one cruise terminal. Exhibits are called names such as Memory, Patterns and Motion. They include a color-drenched exhibit in southern Okinawa, exploring the region’s unique heritage; a showcase of eight works by manga artists at Kansai International Airport; an exhibit in Fukuoka, tapping into its rich ceramics and textile heritage; and contemporary works at Chubu Centrair International Airport in Aichi Prefecture, inspired by samurai and ninja warriors.

One standout highlight is Vision Gate, an exhibition of works by eight artists. It is curated by Paola Antonelli, senior curator of architecture and design at The Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Guests arriving from faraway countries will be welcome into a new way of thinking and making, influenced by ancient wisdom and projected towards the future, explains Antonelli.

Exhibits include an innovative installation transforming vision to sound by artist Yuri Suzuki and Miyu Hosoi at Haneda, comprising a distillation of the hiragana phonetics alphabet.

Other artworks include a series of six video installations, by six different artists, broadcast in synchronized sequence along an arrival gate pathway, including Mariko Mori, Jun Inoue and Sachiko Kodama. Vision Gate can be seen across Tokyo’s two main airports Haneda in Tokyo and Narita in Chiba Prefecture.

Nature: A Land of Forests

Inhale and exhale. Japan’s magical world of forest bathing, known as shinrin-yoku, has perhaps never felt more alluring in the current global climate. The therapeutic benefits of full nature immersion, breathing in the scent of trees while placing one foot in front of the other, are well documented, from boosting moods and alleviating stress to improving physical ailments. Spring, when temperatures rise and early flowers bloom, is one of the most popular times of year to head into the forest. Japan has long embraced this concept.

Today Japan is home to 62 official Forest Therapy Bases, selected by the Forest Therapy Society, a certified NPO supported by many local government organizations. Devoted to the art of forest bathing, the network is selected on the basis of scientific research by forest experts and is as expansive as it is geographically diverse.

Forest-bathing hotspots include the magical primal forests, streams and wildlife of Tsubetsu-cho on northernmost island Hokkaido; Ueno Village in Gunma Prefecture, located two to three hours from Tokyo by train or car, with its peaceful Japanese beech and oak forests; and the giant trees and dense valleys of Okutama (the only official forest-bathing spot included in the Tokyo region). Another must-see spot is Oguni town, wedged between mountains in southwestern Yamagata Prefecture. Accessible by a one-hour bus ride from Yamagata Airport.

Outdoor: Glamping on Whale Island

Keen to get back to nature? Head to Kujira-jima in the Seto Inland Sea, which has been transformed into 21st-century camping nirvana. Kujira means whale in Japanese and is so named by locals due to its distinct forested silhouette, which brings to mind the shape of a whale.

Today, the entire, uninhabited island, about 30 minutes by boat from Uno Port in Okayama Prefecture, itself a two-hour train ride from Osaka, is a camp with visitors able to choose different sleeping options, ranging from a simple canvas tent on a wooden deck facing the sea, to a stylishly-decked out Glamping tent, complete with indoor plants and design pieces. Another option is bedding down in one of their chic cottages, complete with wood-burning stove.

Activities are as plentiful as the experience is deeply tied to nature. In addition to exploring its empty beaches and forests, guests can take part in a string of activities, such as kayaking, SUP, beach-tent saunas, fishing, night star gazing, sunset cruising and sitting by campfires, among others. Food is another highlight, with visitors able to relax a notch and buy DIY barbecue beef sets as well as breakfast spreads, while an in-house chef can also rustle up a raft of Japanese-style treats
