A GREAT BIG WORLD – GLOWING

A GREAT BIG WORLD ANNOUNCE AUGUST 27 RELEASE DATE FOR THIRD FULL-LENGTH ALBUM PARTICLES AND UNVEIL NEW SINGLE GLOWING

PERFORMING TRACK ON LIVE WITH KELLY AND RYAN JULY 29

Today, GRAMMY award-winning multiplatinum duo A Great Big World have officially announced the August 27 release date of their third full-length album Particles and unveiled their new single “Glowing.” Album pre-orders begin July 29 with additional instant tracks made available in the weeks leading up to its release.

“Glowing,” which signals finding light in the darkest places, starts with tender piano keys before wrapping in a big orchestral moment with cinematic strings. When speaking about the track, A Great Big World vocalist and pianist Ian Axel revealed, “It started off as a lullaby I used to sing to my son when he was a newborn. I just wanted him to feel safe and loved. In a way, I was also singing it to myself. When writing it I always imagined a love shield of sorts surrounding us, getting brighter and brighter while deflecting the scary things around us. We wanted to capture that in the recording. The track starts off really simple, and ends with lush, sweeping orchestrations.”

The duo will perform the song for the very first time on nationally syndicated morning talk show Live with Kelly and Ryan July 29.

A Great Big World’s album title Particles came from wanting to explore the idea of the infinite the mirror image of the infinitely small with the infinitely large (Particles vs. A Great Big World). This process led to a collaboration with contemporary artist Kysa Johnson who created the artwork for the album, “Glowing” and their previous single “Boys In The Street.”

Axel shared, “We believe that the entire universe and all of its mysteries exist in every particle, and each of us is made up of tiny particles containing the whole. Kysas art is exactly that. By painting tiny subatomic particle decay patterns, she is able to illustrate enormous cosmic images. The instant we discovered her work, we knew it was exactly what we were looking for. Its been such an inspiring collaborative process, with countless Zoom calls, looking through Hubble space images, discussing ghosts and UFOs, and pondering our existence in the universe.

A Great Big World vocalist Chad King continued, “The songs on this album were written from an incredibly honest and vulnerable place. It was a cathartic and therapeutic process for us. Our hope is that by being vulnerable, others can connect with us, and we can all feel a little less alone in the universe.”

“Glowing” follows the release of “Boys In The Street,” a breathtaking rendition of Greg Holden’s song by the same title, and “Fall On Me“ with Christina Aguilera, both of which will be featured on Particles. The latter has generated more than 30 million streams worldwide and reunited A Great Big World with Aguilera following their 7x platinum GRAMMY award-winning hit “Say Something.” Aguilera invited Axel on stage at the Hollywood Bowl with the LA Phil this past weekend (July 16 and 17) for an astounding surprise performance of “Say Something,” which Billboard described as “cinematic,” and Broadway World said “quietly stunned.”

Stay tuned for more news from A Great Big World soon.

About A Great Big World

A Great Big World find wonder and meaning in significant and small moments alike. The story of the GRAMMY award-winning multiplatinum New York duo Ian Axel and Chad King began in humble fashion. Ian and Chad first met during college in 2005. After years of writing songs, they resonated with listeners worldwide via the 2013 single “Say Something” with Christina Aguilera. It went 7 times platinum and notably received a 2015 GRAMMY award in the category of “Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.” In its wake, their first full-length, Is There Anybody Out There?, bowed at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, garnered a gold certification, and generated north of a billion streams. Between sold out gigs on multiple continents, they captivated audiences on dozens of television shows and released the fan favorite sophomore effort When The Morning Comes. Along the way, they also lent their songwriting to a myriad of artists, ranging from Ingrid Michaelson to Andrea Bocelli and Ellie Goulding. In 2019, A Great Big World set the stage for the next chapter with “Fall On Me” with Christina Aguilera. It gathered 30 million streams as they reunited with her for a powerful performance at the American Music Awards. Now, A Great Big World connect on the grandest scale yet through their third full-length album, Particles, coming August 27 via Ingrooves and led by singles “Boys In The Street” and “Glowing.”

Gord Downie – Coke Machine Glow 20th Anniversary

GORD DOWNIE’S COKE MACHINE GLOW SEES EXPANDED 20th ANNIVERSARY RELEASE

Downie’s First Solo Project Revisited With Triple Album

Coke Machine Glow: Songwriters’ Cabal (Arts & Crafts) And Poetry Audiobook (Penguin Random House)

Out August 27, 2021 – Preorder Now

Bonus Listen: ‘I Stand Before The Songwriters’ Cabal‘ Music Edit With Spoken Word By Rob Baker

Gord Downie’s Coke Machine Glow was released in 2001, in between Music @ Work (2000) and In Violet Light (2002), the ninth and tenth albums by his mighty band of brothers in The Tragically Hip. The first solo project by one of the world’s great wordsmiths, Coke Machine Glow’s sixteen painterly songs were released with an accompanying book of poetry, collectively emanating Downie’s heartrending stories, from the road as from home, in his signature quirk and complex, approachable wit. Twenty years since its release, Coke Machine Glow remains a teetering, charming body of work, never static, shot across its canvas in brilliant glowing embers and warm honey tones.

Now, to mark its 20th anniversary, Arts & Crafts announces a special expanded reissue that posthumously revisits the songs and poetry of this prolific period of Downie’s career. Entitled Coke Machine Glow: Songwriters’ Cabal, the triple-album features the original two-disc set plus a bonus record of twelve unreleased demos, alternate versions, and never-before-heard outtakes, carefully curated by Gord’s oldest Toronto friend Josh Finlayson and brothe Patrick Downie with Arts & Crafts’ Jonathan Shedletzky, including the ominous I Stand Before The Songwriters’ Cabal and two opposing versions of the mysterious Contact.

The in-all 28-song collection presents a portrait of Downie with a rarely before heard intimacy, unrefined and dripping in the wildness of the moment. Elegant alternate studio takes of classics like Vancouver Divorce and Lofty Pines express the fluidity of the family band that comprised the Gas Station recording sessions in Toronto, that May of 2000; while home recordings dated November 1999, Carlaw Avenue, of SF Song, Trick Rider, and Chancellor, and more, spotlight Gord in close communion with his tape recorder and coffee machine. Produced by GD, Josh Finlayson, and Steven Drake, featuring Dale Morningstar, Julie Doiron, Kevin Hearn, Atom Egoyan, Dave Clark, Don Kerr, and more, Coke Machine Glow: Songwriters’ Cabal is a document of Gord at the precipice of his illustrious solo career.

Concurrently, Penguin Random House announces the Coke Machine Glow Audiobook, a complete reading of Downie’s original book of poetry by family members, band members, and friends, like Sarah Harmer, Dan Aykroyd, Ron MacLean, Bruce McCulloch, Don Kerr, and many more, produced by Patrick Downie. (See here for the full list of readers). Ultimately a book Gord wrote about the distances that bridge and separate us, Coke Machine Glow is bound by the dedication of those he loved and was loved by a rich, haunting collection that reveals both the public and private selves of Gordon Edgar Downie. In poetry that is urban, gritty and political, romantic and nocturnal, nostalgic and whimsical, Downie allows us a glimpse inside his world, with loved ones carrying the gift of his words onwards.

Available via digital audiobook retailers, the Coke Machine Glow poetry collection will also be included on CD with A&C’s physical music editions. The Songwriters’ Cabal 3LP vinyl is presented in a beautiful embossed triple-gatefold package, limited to a one-time pressing of 2000 hand-numbered copies. In addition to the 3CD set, A&C is for the first time offering a Coke Machine Glow songbook for voice, guitar, and piano. The album, audiobook, and songbook are out on August 27, 2021. The Coke Machine Glow: Songwriters’ Cabal limited edition vinyl is expected to ship November 15, 2021.

PREORDER COKE MACHINE GLOW 20th ANNIVERSARY ITEMS

That Coke Machine Glow did not sound like a record by The Tragically Hip was both not a surprise, and is still in every way a surprising work: Downie’s oblique yet vicarious poetry undressed of its electricity, redressed in a glorious other voltage. A snapshot of spontaneity, recorded but barely rehearsed, its arc of clandestine art pop clashing with the hum of collective stream-of-consciousness, Gord Downie’s Coke Machine Glow feels like a wild passage through listless places, burrowing in the magic of whatever delicate moment. Maybe Downie was the genius orchestrator of this Goddamned Band, or perhaps he was just always prepared with the right thing to say. You might have listened to this record for the last twenty years, and still not heard some of its finest details, that is the happenstance when onesome poetry is rightly crossed with collective improvisation. On Songwriters’ Cabal, the curtain is pulled back, as Downie rose from his kitchen table/hotel room desk, notebook in hand, and stepped to the mic and sang, voice tinkling like a chandelier, until god or a reasonable facsimile appears.

NOT included on either the music album or the spoken word audiobook is a bonus music edit of Rob Baker of The Tragically Hip’s reading of the poem I Stand Before the Songwriters’ Cabal, set to an instrumental snippet of the same titled song. Shared today, listen here:

Josh Finlayson on the Coke Machine Glow sessions (from the liner notes):

Having lived in Toronto for over 10 years, Gord wanted to make his first solo record in his adopted city, co-producer and musician Josh Finlayson recalls. He had met and befriended many artists in different disciplines and was keen to collaborate with that community. The Gas Station recording studio was located in an old warehouse district of Toronto close to the exhibition grounds near King and Dufferin. Located on the fourth floor, it was an open spaced room with 10 foot windows that had spectacular views looking south to Lake Ontario and east towards downtown. Owned and operated by Dale Morningstar and Don Kerr who after 10 years of operation were being evicted from this location. Coke Machine Glow ended up being the last session at the Gas Station from April 29-May 10, 2000.

The one concrete idea we had going into the recording was that Gord would sing these songs quietly, as they had been written. The recording room was large (50’X25′) with high ceilings. The musicians were spread throughout this room facing the centre where Gord was sitting. Don Kerr (drums) and Kevin Hearn (piano) were only available for the first day of recording which was also our set up day. By late afternoon we were ready to start and their time constraints led to the decision that we were going to make a live off the floor record using an 8 track machine. In hindsight, this was a fortuitous decision as it created a structure that forced us to work within certain parameters. All the songs ended up being cut live, including Gord’s vocals. The only overdubs were done by guests who weren’t available at the time and had to add their parts later. For the remainder of the session Dave Clark took over on drums and Dale Morningstar who was assistant engineering, played several different instruments throughout the recording. There was little rehearsal time for anyone so in most cases the songs were run through once or twice and then recorded.

The Coke Machine Glow 20th anniversary collection, including exclusive merchandise commemorating this landmark release in Downie’s career, is available for PREORDER NOW via Gordieland, Arts & Crafts and Penguin Random House.

HEARTLESS BASTARDS × PHOTOGRAPH

HEARTLESS BASTARDS SHARE NEW SONG “PHOTOGRAPH” – LISTEN

ACCLAIMED ROCK ‘N’ ROLL BAND HERALD FIRST ALBUM IN MORE THAN FIVE YEARS WITH EMPATHETIC NEW SINGLE

A BEAUTIFUL LIFE ARRIVES VIA SWEET UNKNOWN RECORDS/THIRTY TIGERS ON FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 10

Acclaimed rock ‘n’ roll band Heartless Bastards have announced today’s premiere of “Photograph,” the latest single from their eagerly awaited new album, A Beautiful Life. On the new track, Heartless Bastards frontwoman Erika Wennerstrom says:

“Photograph” is about building bridges. We have to approach each other with love and give each other some room to grow. When we went into the studio the song was conceptual in form, and with its complicated structure, I wasn’t even sure it was going to work. I put trust in my instincts and had faith it was all going to translate. There weren’t a lot of rehearsals leading up to it. It was fresh and exciting to dive right in. There can be a lot of magic in those moments where you’re vulnerably finding your way through a new song and the recording light is on. Having the brilliant musicianship of Jesse Ebaugh, Greg Clifford, and Lauren Gurgiolo was monumental. Lauren and I trading leads over a psychedelic landscape might be one of my favorite musical moments to date. It was everything I hoped it would be and then some. I really feel the stars aligned and we created something really special.”

Heartless Bastards’ sixth studio album and first new music in more than half a decade, A Beautiful Life arrives via Sweet Unknown Records/Thirty Tigers on Friday, September 10; pre-orders are available now, including a limited edition hand-poured double LP and special merchandise available exclusively from the Sweet Unknown Records Official Store.

PRE-ORDER/PRE-SAVE A BEAUTIFUL LIFE

LIMITED EDITION VINYL AND EXCLUSIVE MERCHANDISE ARE AVAILABLE HERE

A Beautiful Life was heralded last month with the soulful new single, “How Low,” available now at all DSPs and streaming services; an official music video – directed by documentary filmmakers Sam Wainwright Douglas and David Hartstein – is streaming via YouTube. “How LowÉd; was met by instant acclaim, with Rolling Stone declaring it to be “a satisfying summer song with a deeper message in its lyrics,” further noting how the song’s companion video “juxtaposes the vacuous Instagram life with images of poverty, natural disaster, and ultimately acts of kindness.”

LISTEN TO “HOW LOW”

WATCH “HOW LOW”

A Beautiful Life once again sees Heartless Bastards founder Erika Wennerstrom alchemizing her idealism into viscerally potent rock ‘n’ roll. Co-produced by Wennerstrom and Kevin Ratterman (Strand Of Oaks, Jim James, White Reaper), the album – which follows 2015’s Restless Ones –finds the Austin, TX-based singer-songwriter backed by a powerhouse lineup comprising guitarist Lauren Gurgiolo (Okkervil River), drummer Greggory Clifford (White Denim), multi-instrumentalist Jesse Chandler (Mercury Rev, Midlake), keyboardist Bo Koster (My Morning Jacket), guitarist David Pulkingham (Patty Griffin), and longtime Heartless Bastards bassist Jesse Ebaugh.

Though Wennerstrom first considered releasing A Beautiful Life under her own name as the follow-up to her widely praised 2018 solo debut, Sweet Unknown, she ultimately came to view the new album as a continuation of the journey begun on Heartless Bastards’ milestone 2005 debut, Stairs and Elevators. Indeed, with its coalescence of so many eclectic touchstones – from French pop and Celtic folk to space rock, Disney scores, and post-punk – A Beautiful Life stands tall as Heartless Bastards’ most elaborately realized work to date. Songs such as the sprawling, psychedelic epic, “Photograph” and the rambling folk of “The River” (the latter featuring contributions from such singular musicians as Andrew Bird and Persian sitar virtuoso Fared Shafinury) channel Wennerstrom’s nuanced observations into glorious music that incites contemplation, catharsis, and a joyful sense of defiance.

“For me music is a gift,” says Wennerstrom. “I do it because I love it, and because it helps me feel more connected to the world. I think we all long for a deep connection, and I hope this record adds to the conversation on how we as a species can stop seeing ourselves as separate. I hope it helps everyone to think about how we can look out for each other, take care of each other, and lift each other up.”

A Beautiful Life also includes Heartless Bastards’ 2020 single, “Revolution,” available now on all digital platforms. An official music video – also directed by Sam Wainwright Douglas and David Hartstein – is streaming now at YouTube HERE.

The passionate energy and undeniable musical chemistry of A Beautiful Life inspired Wennerstrom to invite Gurgiolo and Clifford into the Heartless Bastards lineup for their upcoming live schedule, set to get underway September 16 at Stickyz in Little Rock, AR and then travel through late November. Due to demand in sales, Heartless Bastards at The State Room in Salt Lake City is being moved to The Commonwealth Room. The band recently made its live debut with a sold out two-night-stand at Austinߣs beloved Mohawk Austin, hailed by the Austin Chronicle as “front-loaded with fresh, interesting material. If you didn’t know better, you’d think the improbably tight unit had been playing together for five years.”

Building upon the amazing night they had at the Mohawk, Heartless Bastards have now announced a weekly residency in Austin for the month of August. “It’s been a rough year and a half for venues and we thought supporting some of our local spots would be a great way to warm up for tour,” says Wennerstrom. “We’ll be playing every Friday at C-Boys, and every Saturday at The Continental accompanied by some of our dear friends. With preparing to release the bands sixth record we have no shortage of material to make each night unique, and it’s been just as much fun to revisit the old material as it will be to share with you the new record. After 2020 it’s been hard to even put into words the gratitude we all have for the opportunity to perform music again, and it’s something we don’t want to ever take for granted.” For updates and ticket availability, please visit www.theheartlessbastards.com/tour.

The song features the vocals of Mereba, Olu and Benji along with spoken word from Big Rube.

Clocking in at over six minutes, “Hapi” almost sounds like a sermon delivered by four different voices telling the stories of their lives, everything they’ve seen and everything they hope to see improve.

They also released the track list for the brand new album which comes with a few pleasant surprises in the form of features from Chance The Rapper, Ari Lennox, Buddy, Masego and Lucky Daye.

Nothing But Thieves New Video

The English rock band Nothing But Thieves released a brand new music video for their song “Real Love Song” on Monday.

Real Love Song” is the second song from their new album titled “Moral Panic.” It follows “Is Everybody Going Crazy?” as the second song from the album, and it was produced by Mike Crossey who has worked with bands like Arctic Monkeys, The 1975, Two Door Cinema Club and The Black Keys.

At almost 3 million streams worldwide, the song breaks love and relationships into pieces. Love isn’t the perfect, romantic tale we hear in songs and see in movies. Conor Mason, lead vocals for the band, calls love “dirty,” saying the love in “Real Love Song” makes him hate himself for days, sitting alone while listening to Nick Cave.

Complete with a warning of flashing images and stroboscopic sequences, the video combines neon lights with animation to tell the story of love in the digital world.

“This is a song within a song and the video, with its nods to the modern relationship and its sensationalized band moments, tell two sides of the same story. Where does the cynicism end and the real begin?” the band said.

Nothing But Thieves has sold more than 700,000 albums and 150,000 tickets in the past few years, including a sellout at Alexandra Palace. They have also performed in the United States for Jimmy Fallon and James Corden on late night television. Though they’ve bene unable to perform live, they have kept the content flowing for their fans on their YouTube channel as all five members of the band record separately from different locations.

“Moral Panic” is available for pre-order now and will be released in October. It will be the band’s first album since their EP titled “What Did You Think When You Made Me This Way” in 2018.
