Inspire Change

Inspire Change, the NFL‘s social justice initiative, recently revealed that the organization has greatly exceeded fundraising expectiations.

In December, it was announced that the league’s Inspire Change initiative had reached $180M toward the 10-year, $250M commitment in social justice. At the annual owner’s meetings, it was announced that Inspire Change has eclipsed $237M toward this commitment, bringing them almost 5 years ahead of schedule.

The increase includes additional league funding as well as widespread club and ownership efforts not yet tallied as of the December announcement and through the end of the 2021-’22 league year.

Inspire Change, which aims to move us toward a more equal and just tomorrow by reducing barriers to opportunity, is built on four pillars: education, economic advancement, police-community relations, and criminal justice reform. Most recently, four organizations—Year Up, Wall Street Bound, Free Minds Book Club, and Get Schooled—received grants. The money has gone to nonprofits and hundreds of grassroots organizations nationwide since 2017.

About Inspire Change

Working with the Players Coalition, a 501(c)(3), Inspire Change is the NFL’s charity. It is led by players and coaches within the league and allows for the organization to give back to local communities through financial means, hoping to reduce barriers to opportunity and strengthen their communities.

Race for Change

The IRONMAN® Foundation announced partnerships with Black Kids Swim®, Black Runners Connection, and Major Taylor Cycling Club to build awareness and expand outreach in support of its Race For ChangeTM diversity initiative. The IRONMAN Foundation and the three affinity sports clubs will implement programming to address potential participation barriers that might prevent Black and other diverse athlete groups from competing in triathlons.

In 2020, with the mission to ensure equity for athletes in the sport of triathlon and the communities where IRONMAN athletes and first-time hopefuls live, train, and race, Race for Change was launched by The IRONMAN Foundation and The IRONMAN Group with an initial pledge of $1 million to support programming.

To kick off the collaboration, members from Black Kids Swim, Black Runners Connection, and Major Taylor International Cycling Alliance will form Race For Change relay teams to compete in several 2022 IRONMAN 70.3® events throughout the United States. The goal behind the Race For Change relay teams is to foster support for The IRONMAN Foundation’s diversity initiative and inspire more diverse athletes to consider IRONMAN events. The Race For Change relay teams will take part in the following races:

“We are thrilled to be teaming up with Black Kids Swim, Black Runners Connection, and Major Taylor International Cycling Alliance through our Race for Change diversity initiative. We consider these groundbreaking partnerships an important collaboration as we seek to remove participation barriers to welcome more people into our sport,” said Audra Tassone-Indeck, Executive Director of the IRONMAN Foundation.

Black Kids Swim is a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing Black participation in competitive swimming. It encourages Black families to take advantage of the academic, professional, and personal opportunities available through proficient swim skills. Black Kids Swim wants to see Black children do more than ‘survive’ in the water. The organization helps Black children develop valuable techniques, sportsmanship, and discipline that can benefit them physically and professionally their entire lives.

“There is an immense amount of untapped talent in the Black swimming community that needs assistance and recognition,” said Black Kids Swim Founder and Executive Director Ebony Rosemond. “Black Kids Swim recognizes triathlon is growing in popularity and will soon become an NCAA sport. We view this exciting partnership with IRONMAN Foundation’s Race for Change initiative as something that will increase Black participation in both competitive swimming and triathlons.”

Black Runners Connection is a group that encourages Black people to embrace distance running throughout the world. It has more than 8,500 members nationwide and promotes the idea of a healthy mind and body as an athlete.

“Running is one of the most popular sports, and it is celebrated by being part of the largest endurance sport in the world,” said James Ravenell, president, and CEO of Black Runners Connection. “Being asked to be a part of IRONMAN Foundation’s Race For Change initiative will showcase how Black runners can participate in triathlons.”

Major Taylor International Cycling Alliance was named for Marshall “Major” Taylor, who in 1899 became the first Black American world champion in cycling. Major Taylor International Cycling Alliance is an all-inclusive cycling organization that looks to promote good health by supporting recreational and cycling activities in the community. It has clubs throughout the United States and overseas in Canada and Nairobi, Kenya.

“One of the goals of Major Taylor International Cycling Alliance is to show how inclusive cycling is and how it’s for all communities,’ said Bill Gaston, president of Major Taylor International Cycling Alliance. “We are excited and proud that the IRONMAN Foundation’s Race for Change initiative has invited our club to help with its diversity and inclusion efforts. Removing barriers and creating awareness of the multisport world is our goal. This is yet another avenue in the cycling community to be explored.”

Pro-triathlete coach, Morgon Latimore, will serve as a mentor and help each Race for Change relay team prep for their event. For more information on The IRONMAN Group, its brands, and global event series, click HERE.

Propel × BDHEA

The Propel Center, the global HBCU innovation and learning hub intended to level the playing field and open greater doors of opportunity for their students, announced the creation and launch of its Propel-BDHEA internships, a national program focused on select HBCU and other African American students interested in pursuing medical and related healthcare careers.

The internship partnership will reimagine health equity and advance the goal of the Black Directors Health Equity Agenda (BDHEA) to foster collaboration among top health systems. BDHEA programs address the social determinants of health, provide best practices, ensure equitable access to care and advocate for long-term, meaningful healthcare policies impacting Black people and other communities of color. BDHEA unites healthcare leaders in efforts to diversify their organizations and achieve long-term health equity. INROADS, Inc. will execute the program.

According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, the U.S. will have up to 122,000 unfilled posts for physicians by 2032. This skills shortage in the medical profession is even more alarming as it relates to future healthcare professionals of color: Only 7.3% of those enrolled in medical schools in 2020 identified as Black or African American. “The Propel-BDHEA internship program addresses the urgent need to recruit and train Black healthcare professionals and to give them pathways to leadership in our nation’s top healthcare organizations,” said Michele Richardson, BDHEA board member and executive sponsor. “HBCU students are an incredible source of talent who can help bring quality care to under-resourced urban and rural areas, improving access to care and patient outcomes. The intensive Propel-BDHEA program cultivates the leadership skills that will magnify their impact on healthcare organizations and communities of color.”

“We recognize that representation must be more reflective of the populations being served to bring about real, long term systemic change addressing these health disparities,” Propel Chief Development Officer Julie Sills Molock states, adding that “increasing the numbers of Black physicians is not only about diversity and inclusion; it’s also about establishing greater patient access to doctors with whom they can confide in, connect with culturally, trust and build a better overall patient-provider rapport. This ultimately leads to more preventive care and healthier African American communities, but it starts with initiatives like this collaborative internship with our phenomenal partners.”

INROADS has a proven, 50-year history of preparing young people from underrepresented communities for success in business and STEM careers,” shared Forest T. Harper, Jr., president and CEO of INROADS, Inc. “We know well that career disparities start with a lack of internship opportunities for African American students—with only six percent of paid internships going to them. We’re committed to our exciting new collaboration with Propel and BDHEA to address these disparities and are especially pleased to be a channel for providing the resources and expertise to execute this invaluable initiative. Our goal here is clear: To prepare and convert more African American students into healthcare professionals who can excel and make an impact in the communities they serve.”

With the guidance of INROADS, Propel and BDHEA will secure a total of 100 students for the internships, which are open to collegians and will serve as a unique opportunity for immersion, focused clinical study, leadership access and exposure that the partners believe will accelerate early talent development and help advance the nation’s diverse medical pool and workforce of tomorrow.

The selected interns will engage in innovative, work-based learning experiences, research opportunities with R&D-focused institutions, augmented academic coursework and mentoring. These future healthcare professionals will additionally benefit from unprecedented access to Propel, BDHEA and INROADS’ corporate partners and senior advisors, as well as select medical schools in collaboration with the Atlanta University Center Data Science Initiative (AUC) and specific HBCU medical and pre-med programs, while working on emerging medical health technology projects.

Propel and BDHEA’s joint vision and commitment to health equity will ensure that all HBCU students have the access and ability necessary to achieve their full healthcare career potential. The partners emphasize that the most effective pathway toward eliminating persistent health disparities mandates leveraging data-informed strategies to help create a society where neither race nor poverty determines health or overall life outcomes.

Prime areas of focus for the new national internship program will include infant and maternal health, internal medicine, preventive and health equity, clinical algorithms, data science, telemedicine and remote patient monitoring, app development, cardiovascular disease, infectious diseases and more. To apply or find out more, interested students may click HERE. The application period is currently open, and all applications are due by May 1, 2022. The selected interns will be announced and matched to internships in May of 2022. Employers willing to sponsor interns may contact the BDHEA HERE.

About the Propel Center

Supported by founding partners Apple and Southern Company, the Propel Center is a first-of-its-kind innovation and learning hub for the entire HBCU community that will serve as a catalytic epicenter of learning, providing students with the knowledge, skills, tools and resources necessary to transform the nation’s talent pipeline and workforce. Through a robust virtual platform, on-campus activities at partner institutions and a physical campus located in the Atlanta University Center, Propel will offer innovative curricula and unprecedented leadership opportunities to HBCUs across the nation in an effort to produce the next generation of capable and conscientious Black leaders.

Dining Out for Life Fundraiser

The last two years have curtailed most public events, but Dining Out For Life® hosted by Subaru soldiered on by helping partner restaurants fill take-out or gift card orders while their own fundraising was severely limited. This year, nearly all of the 50+ Dining Out For Life licensed health care organizations are planning to host an event, inviting supporters to partake in a meal that will be meaningful to all involved.

Now in its 26th year, Dining Out For Life is magnificent in its simplicity: Dine at a participating restaurant and that restaurant will donate a generous portion of the day’s proceeds to a local health organization providing essential services to those affected by HIV/AIDS and other chronic illnesses. The 2022 fundraiser will be held on Thursday, April 28 in cities across North America. The event is traditionally held on the last Thursday in April, while some markets have alternate dates. To learn more about your region’s event and to make a reservation, click HERE.

Sixteen years ago, Subaru of America, the automaker committed to helping those in need, teamed up with the Dining Out For Life organization, along with spokespeople including Ted Allen, host of Food Network’s Chopped!; Mondo Guerra, Project Runway All Stars designer and HIV advocate; and film and television actor Pam Grier (Foxy Brown/Jackie Brown), who said: “While many of us may be limited in what we can donate, we can contribute our time to causes we care about. Consider sharing what you can by becoming a volunteer!”

Since 2006, Dining Out For Life has raised more than $52 million dollars with support from Subaru, thousands of restaurants and hundreds of volunteers.

“Subaru and our retailers are committed to caring for our communities nationwide, and over many years of partnership, we’ve been privileged to support the HIV/AIDS community through Dining Out For Life,” said Alan Bethke, Senior Vice President of Marketing, Subaru of America, Inc. “We’re excited to bring Dining Out For Life back to cities across North America and invite people to sit down for a meal and show their support for their neighbors who are currently living with HIV and other chronic illnesses.”

How to participate:

  • Visit their website to find a Dining Out For Life event in your community.
  • Support participating restaurants – make a reservation, order takeout, or purchase gift certificates.
  • Donate directly to Dining Out For Life service organizations to support the continued work they do to make communities healthier.
