THE ETERNALS × X-MEN

The Marvel Universe braces itself for JUDGMENT DAY! Written by mastermind talent Kieron Gillen and featuring the grand-scale artwork of Valerio Schiti and color artist Marte Gracia, A.X.E.: JUDGMENT DAY is an upcoming Marvel Comics event that kicks off when the Eternals start a vicious war with their new immortal rivals—the X-Men! The Eternals’ plan for mutant annihilation will include unleashing the most brutal members of their species starting with URANOS THE UNDYING! Imprisoned for millions of years, the grand-uncle of Thanos will be instrumental in the conflict, leading the attack against the new mutant planet of Arakko.

And Uranos won’t be the only new Eternals threat that the X-Men will have to face. Head to Marvel.com now for the reveal of THE HEX, mega-powerful Eternals that have awakened from a millennia-long slumber to stomp out mutantkind.

“The Eternals are the aggressors here,” Gillen explained to Popverse in a recent interview. “This is the Eternals about to go to war. You get to see the prime Eternals building their armories, working out how they’re going to kill people, various plans and kidnappings, and the good Eternals perhaps being a bit more lost. It’s preparation for war. That’s what it is. I think that’s the best way of describing it, as well as being also a really good restatement of what’s going on in the Eternals. Because if you haven’t read issues one to 12, this is like, ‘OK, I don’t know anything about Eternals. I don’t know, why would [they] be going to war? Who are they even?’ It’s that as well. This is the preparation of the war happening and everything you need to know going in.”

Check out a new teaser below and experience the start of Marvel Comics’ latest crossover epic when A.X.E.: JUDGMENT DAY #1 arrives on July 20. For more information, visit Marvel.com.

Layla Halabian writes, “With its sultry production and hazy vocals that feel beamed in from a dream, ‘Promises & Mistakes’ gets a visual to match from director Morgan Maher. What are you up to right now — describe your surroundings.

I’m in the backseat of a Lexus — the same seat where my song “Promises & Mistakes” was conceived — on my way back to NYC after being gone for three weeks in Colombia and Brazil. It’s a hot summer day, and I need a beverage.

What were you and director Morgan Maher hoping to convey with the video? What was the creative process behind the concept?

Morgan and I hoped to convey the feeling of taking back the power in a troubled relationship. After lots of conversations about ex-boyfriends and toxic relationships, we decided to focus on what makes us girls feel sexy, comfortable, and fierce.

How did you begin making music?

I began making music the second I could sing, I would make up songs and was always humming. I always knew that music was my calling. I started taking music more seriously in high school, when I went to the Professional Performing Arts School for classical vocal, and learned music production at Third Street Music School. I met a bunch of friends who shared my passion for music, and I started developing myself as an artist in various studios alongside them in NYC. I’m currently studying music at NYU at the Clive Davis Institute.

Which artists and genres/eras of music inspire you?

I’m inspired by a variety of artists, genres, and eras of music, and I’m still currently finding which genre best encapsulates my sound. For this reason, I’m really inspired by FKA Twigs and Pharrell Williams, as they both infuse many different styles to create their own distinct sound.

What kind of headspace were you in while writing “Promises & Mistakes?”

I wasn’t in a good headspace while writing “Promises & Mistakes.” In fact, many of the lyrics were written by myself and my ex in an argument in the form of a note we passed back and forth on our way back from upstate New York in the backseat of this same car. I was frustrated, broken down, and ready to move on from the vicious cycle we called love.

This track is off your EP Love & Release. What’s it like looking back on writing and recording the album? What have you learned since?

It’s interesting to look back on my EP Love & Release, as It was a completely different era of my life. To me, it’s kind of like a journal of 2020-2021 poured into five tracks. I’ve learned so much about myself both mentally and musically since the EP, and I’m excited to show the world who I’ve become.

EPR Proposal to Recycling Programs via Marathon Strategies for use by 360 MAGAZINE

AF&PA

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA), a trade group representing U.S. paper and wood products manufacturers, will host an on-the-record media briefing on Thursday, June 23, to discuss SB 54, an extended producer responsibility (EPR) proposal under consideration in the California State Legislature. The proposal would impose new costs on producers to fund recycling programs but could undercut the investments industries, like the paper industry, are already making in recycling infrastructure.

Before taking questions, Terry Webber, AF&PA vice president of industry affairs, will discuss topics including:

  • The Strength of the U.S. Recycling System: Despite challenges surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, AF&PA will share data that demonstrates how the paper recycling system is stronger than ever. AF&PA recently announced that 68% of all paper consumed in the U.S. was recycled in 2021.
  • Impacts of California’s EPR Proposal: One-size-fits-all EPR programs, like the one put forth in California, could undermine or even reverse the success of paper recycling. According to the EPA, more paper by weight is recovered for recycling than plastic, glass, steel, and aluminum combined.
  • Significant Industry Investment: The paper industry has planned around $5 billion in manufacturing infrastructure investments by 2024, which will help continue the best use of recycled fiber. That is nearly $2.5 million per day in investments.

2023 ZEITZ MOCAA × UNIVERSITY OF THE WESTERN CAPE MUSEUM

The 2023 Zeitz MOCAA & University of the Western Cape (UWC) Museum Fellowship Programme call for applications officially opens on 15 June 2022.

This call marks the second iteration of the year-long programme, developed to educate a new generation of art and museum professionals from Africa. With the aim to foster the growth of curatorial practice and advance scholarship on contemporary art discourse from the continent, the programme offers fellows exposure to museum practice facilitated by Zeitz MOCAA senior staff and is underpinned by rigorous academic scholarship at UWC’s Department of History and Centre for Humanities Research (CHR).

“We are pleased to once again be collaborating with the University of the Western Cape on this incredible initiative to educate the next generation of exhibition makers and curatorial thinkers. We remain committed to merging scholarship on contemporary art production and circulation from Africa and its diaspora and hope to contribute to a new group of skilled professionals looking to work within museums, galleries, art centres, private and public collection management, biennials, art publishing, festivals, universities and more,” says Koyo Kouoh, Executive Director and Chief Curator at Zeitz MOCAA

During the 12-month Museum Fellowship Programme, fellows will engage in discourse around contemporary art, curatorial practice, art education, conservation, heritage and museology from Africa and the African diaspora. They will study and work with both institutions towards an accredited BA Honours qualification. This includes enrolling in courses on historiography, curatorship, museums, heritage and public history at UWC’s Department of History as well as obtaining work experience at Zeitz MOCAA in the Curatorial, Collections & Exhibition Management, Art Education and Institutional Advancement departments. Successful fellows will actively contribute to the research, planning, execution and management of museum projects, ranging from exhibitions, publishing and public programming to art education and fundraising.

“It is fitting that applications for the 2023 Zeitz MOCAA & University of the Western Cape (UWC) Museum Fellowship Programme opens one day before South Africa’s Youth Day on 16 June and during Youth Month. Our aim is to continue promoting narratives that are important to the building of artistic and curatorial communities and this feeds directly into the South African government’s goals of developing plans for a more effective arts and culture curriculum and supporting income and funding models for arts and culture initiatives,” says Rory Bester, Associate Professor in the Department of History at UWC.

The Fellowship begins in January 2023 and is open to individuals who are citizens of an African country. It covers the costs of tuition, accommodation, basic health insurance and a monthly stipend. Travel to South Africa and visa costs are not included.

Applications for the 2023 programme close on 15 July 2022 and successful applicants will be contacted directly by 5 September 2022. Only the first 150 applications received will be considered for review.
