Rosklide Festival 2019 Lineup

Roskilde Festival completes 2019 line-up with Janelle Monáe, Skepta, Vampire Weekend and 65 more artists

Other new names include Marina, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Maggie Rogers, Johnny Marr, Behemoth, Aldous Harding, DJ Koze, Sheck Wes, Saweetie, Weyes Blood and The Comet Is Coming

29 June – 6 July 2019 Denmark |Roskilde-festival.dk |

With 67 new artists – including 55 new music acts – the full line-up for Roskilde Festival, Northern Europe’s biggest festival, is now complete. 173 music acts in total will play the Danish non-profit festival. Today’s new additions will join the already announced The Cure, Bob Dylan, Travis Scott, Cardi B, Robyn, Christine and the Queens, Rosalía and many, many more.

From Ghana to Greenland, from New Zealand to Norway, from Jamaica to Japan, artists of all sizes from more than 30 different countries will play the big and the small stages. Festival-goers from all over the world will party together in the name of charity when they explore the diverse music and arts programme at Roskilde Festival 2019. When Janelle Monáe first played Roskilde Festival she called it the most amazing show she had ever played. The American is back, bigger and better than ever before after the release of her highly acclaimed Dirty Computer, mixing soul, funk, pop and Afrofuturism. A former mentee of Prince, Monáe doesn’t merely perform a persona, she embodies it. On her first releases, she became an android, inviting listeners into a world full of Afrofuturist magical realism. She has wowed critics in roles in Academy-nominated films, ”Moonlight” and “Hidden Figures”, so performing a character is natural stuff for this prodigy. Her album challenges social and sexual norms as well as traditional concepts of a woman’s role in the world. It’s also an album that celebrates those in marginalised communities.

Indie heroes, guitar gods and wonderful weirdos. Vampire Weekend have kept fans waiting for a new album for six years. Now they are finally back at Roskilde Festival, and this time they will be conquering the legendary main stage, the Orange Stage. Noel Gallagher returns with his High Flying Birds, and guitar lovers will be happy to see another British legend, Johnny Marr, presenting both solo material and The Smiths classics. Travis Scott favourite Sheck Wes, grime king Skepta and future star Saweetie will make hip-hop connoisseurs happy, while festival-goers looking for something heavier will rejoice in collective headbanging to acts such as Behemoth and Danish favourites Baest. Plenty of singer-songwriters are ready for their Roskilde debut: from Welsh popstar Marina and New Zealand hero Aldous Harding to folk-pop starlet Maggie Rogers and indie favourite Weyes Blood. Those favouring synthesizers, beats and samples will have plenty to look forward to with new announcements such as German darling DJ Koze, quirky Italian Giorgia Angiuli and noisy duo 700 Bliss consisting of DJ Haram and Moor Mother. A further exploration of the paths of weird will lead to Yves Tumor and the jazz adventures of The Comet Is Coming and Sons of Kemet XL, with saxophone hero Shabaka Hutchings leading both outfits.

Nordic talents ready for their Roskilde Festival debut- Roskilde Festival’s talent programme has also been completed with 32 new acts, representing the best new Nordic music. The new acts include Icelandic prodigy Auður, Norway’s Lil Halima, Swedish DIY rapper Z.E and Selma Judith, daughter of Lars von Trier and one of the most exciting new acts in Denmark, making emotional R&B while mastering the harpThey will join already announced upcoming Nordic acts such as Norway’s Brenn., Copenhagen techno duo Funeral Future and Ea Kaya, one of Denmark’s most promising Scandi-pop talents. These artists are all making waves in their home countries and internationally, ready to take things to the next level at Roskilde Festival. They follow in the footsteps of MØ, Silvana Imam, Icona Pop, Iceage, Susanne Sundfør and many others who played Roskilde Festival before their big breakthroughs. During the first three days of the festival, these stars of tomorrow will play the Rising and Countdown stages, both located in the centre of the non-profit festival’s huge camping city. Most of these acts will play to the biggest audience of their career so far.

Arts, activism and solidarity – and particle accelerators- Art, social engagement and music are inseparable and all part of the full experience at Roskilde Festival.Hundreds of artists, writers, scientists, speakers and architects will inspire contemplation, spark debate and surprise festival-goers. This year’s Arts & Activism programme includes a large-scale sculpture by renowned Swiss artist Claudia Comte and a performance by American artist Isabel Lewis. Hannah Tocicki Anbert will conduct a silent parade in the name of unproductivity, Søren Aagaard will set up a post-apocalyptic food truck and Japanese artist Tomoko Sauvage will transform water bowls into instruments, turning water into sound. As always, there will be plenty of street art at Roskilde Festival with a programme that includes Askew One, Bacon and Zusa. Bringing science to the festival experience, CERN and the Niels Bohr Institute will offer workshops enabling you to make a cloud or a your very own renewable charger as well as debates on topics such as future energy.

Roskilde Festival’s head of programme Anders Wahrén says: “It feels great to finally present our programme, and Janelle Monáe is a crown jewel in a line-up I think bodes very well for our future. Not only do we have a load of great young artists of all sizes and from all corners of the earth, we also see that many of them are more socially aware than ever. From the music to the arts, debates and workshops, solidarity and activism is something that is reflected throughout our programme.”

The schedule and a handful of acts are yet to be announced. The full arts programme will be out in the spring.

  • Tickets to Roskilde Festival are on sale on roskilde-festival.dk.

  • Full festival tickets are DKK 2100 (approx. EUR 282) (including free access to camping).

  • More artists will be announced soon.

  • A total of 180 acts will play the festival’s eight stages.

Roskilde Festival 2019 lasts for eight days between Saturday 29 June and Saturday 6 July.

Promoting Sustainability

Lime Links Mexico City Riders to Public Transit

64.2% of micromobility riders in Mexico City reported using Lime scooters to transport themselves to or from public transit last month. With Mexico City commuters spending an average of 218 hours stuck in traffic last year, there’s promise that micromiblity can replace car trips.

Care About Climate Change? Care About Scooters.

Writing in Route Fifty, Lime’s Director of Sustainability, Andrew Savage calls for “bold changes in the effort” to address climate change and cites electric scooters as a potential solution; “Regulating a new industry can be a challenge, but now, more than ever, we need to take every possible step to curb the crisis at hand.”

Enhancing Communities

NYC’s Transit Equity Crisis

The largest city in the United States is in the midst of a transit equity crisis, and micromoblity could be the solution. According to our findings, the availability of dock-free bikes and scooters throughout New York City would put 1.5 million more New Yorkers within a 10-minute walk, bike or scoot of a subway line.

Juicer Program Turns One

Lime’s Juicer Program, which gives local residents in all Lime-S markets the freedom to make money on their own schedule by collecting, charging and redeploying our electric scooters, celebrated one year in action this month. We collected some incredible stories from our Juicers.

“All You Need To Know” Gryffin & Slander ft. Calle Lehmann

“ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW” BY GRYFFIN & SLANDER FT. CALLE LEHMANN OUT TODAY

GRYFFIN’S DEBUT ALBUM ‘GRAVITY’ DUE OUT LATER THIS SUMMER

L.A. BASED ARTIST/PRODUCER TO APPEAR AT COACHELLA NEXT MONTH.

Los Angeles-based artist/producer Gryffin and L.A.-based production duo SLANDER have teamed up for a stunning new single called “All You Need to Know” ft. Calle Lehmann. The track is the first new release from Gryffin’s forthcoming debut album “Gravity”, due out this summer via Darkroom/Geffen Records, and is his first collaboration with the fan-favorite bass artists and Gud Vibrations label co-owners. With its warm textures and hypnotic drop, “All You Need to Know” perfectly merges Gryffin’s melodic genius and SLANDER’s artful basslines and immaculate sound design. Listen HERE.

Swedish singer/songwriter Calle Lehmann infuses each line with his undeniably lovely vocals, resulting in a track that’s soaring and euphoric. In December, Gryffin released “Gravity Pt. 1” — a six-song EP that marks the first half of his debut album. “Gravity Pt. 1″ features a number of hit singles, including “Bye Bye” ft. Ivy Adara, which amassed nearly a million streams on Spotify in just one week, and appeared on coveted playlists like New Music Friday and Best of the Week. SLANDER recently released their “Kneel Before Me” with Crankdat featuring heavy metal band Asking Alexandria, and 3-track “The Headbangers Ball” EP. They kicked off the new year with the release of their blissful, chill-bass track “First Time” with Seven Lions, Dabin, featuring Dylan Matthew. Having recently completed “The Gravity Tour” — his biggest North American headlining run to date — Gryffin has a series of major festival dates lined up for this spring and summer, including his highly anticipated second appearance at Coachella. At the end of 2018, SLANDER embarked on their headlining “The Headbangers Ball” North American tour, selling out each date including two shows at the esteemed Hollywood Palladium on January 11th and 12th. The duo was also featured on the cover of LA Weekly the very same month. See full list of tour dates below.

More on Gryffin

Gryffin got his start in music as a classically trained pianist and guitarist and also played in several bands. After receiving an electrical engineering degree from the University of Southern California, he pursued a path in music production, drawing equally from his carefully honed musicality and edgy ingenuity. Gryffin made his breakthrough in 2016 with two singles showcasing his melodic take on dance music: “Heading Home” ft. Josef Salvat (which shot to #1 on Spotify’s US and Global Viral charts) and the Bipolar Sunshine collaboration “Whole Heart.” In addition, his 2017 smash single “Feel Good” — with Illenium and featuring Daya — peaked at #18 on the Dance/Mix Show Airplay charts. Gryffin’s recent triumphs include “Tie Me Down” ft. Elley Duhé (an August release that hit #2 on the Spotify US Viral Chart and #9 on the Global Viral Chart, with over 80 million streams to date) and “Remember” ft. Zohara (a November release that garnered 6.5 million streams in its first few weeks and earned support from Tiesto, who featured the track on an Instagram story).

More on SLANDER

After building a mint name for themselves through jaw-dropping original productions and massive collaborations with NGHTMRE, SLANDER has added “label heads” to their resume. The LA-based duo recently turned their popular Gud Vibrations brand into an official record label with good friend NGHTMRE, ensuring their legions of fans that their famous good vibes are only getting started. Attesting to their dynamic nature as artists, SLANDER’s productions range from cinematic and melodic to bone-jarring and foot-stomping, always with a common thread of sophisticated soundscapes and captivating energy. Their live performances have landed them gigs in major cities such as Las Vegas, Washington D.C., Miami, Houston, and Chicago, and festivals including Ultra Mexico and Holy Ship 12.0. SLANDER and the Gud Vibrations crew have some exciting projects coming up as the festival season grows ever nearer.

Sober Houses and the Path to Recovery

The Truth About Sober Houses and the Path to Recovery

by Mallory Neuberger

Wendy Williams made headlines last week when she revealed that she’s living in a sober house; but less than one week later she left work, checked out of the facility, and went on to drink alcohol until she was hospitalized. So, what went wrong?

Sobriety is not something that we can pay for. As a recovering cocaine addict, I had to admit that I was an addict and that I was ready for a drug free life. In essence, I had to hit my bottom. Some people die before they find the willingness to get sober. Others need to end up in prison, homeless, or selling their bodies and souls to feed their disease. And many, like myself, don’t lost their homes, cars, jobs or families, but find themselves spiritually void and miserable, with their drug of choice no longer providing the relief that it once had.

Wendy Williams is going through difficulties in her marriage. Her husband is rumored to be cheating on her, and his mistress is pregnant. Despite appearing on television daily, living in a sober house, and paying a sober coach to keep tabs on her 24/7, she still couldn’t handle her heartbreak and to alcohol to numb her pain. The next day she was back on TV. In my opinion, she isn’t ready.

Ethical sober houses keep residents safe by breathalyzing and drug testing them. They have guidelines to provide structure, including curfews, chore checks, and mandatory attendance at 12-step meetings like A.A. or N.A. There are organizations that certify sober houses as good operators, so it’s important to be sure that you are choosing a place that truly has the residents’ best interests at heart.

Sober houses offer a sense of community. They are filled with residents and staff who are all trying to stay sober and meet life head on. There is always someone to talk to, so we are never alone. In my sober houses we emphasize healthy living, encouraging good eating habits and exercise. We practice yoga and we meditate together. We offer fellowship where we eat, laugh, play games, make crafts, listen to music, and sit by the pool. We celebrate together, helping one another get through birthdays, holidays and anniversaries without picking up. We are houses filled with sober women and we are like a big family filled with surrogate mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends. We cry together, and more importantly, we laugh.

Putting down drugs and alcohol seemed like the only way I could live, but what kind of a life was it going to be? I feared that I would be socially awkward without my expensive wines or a frozen margarita with salt. I didn’t think I would be able to stay awake without my beloved cocaine. I was losing my best friends – drugs and alcohol – how would I ever have fun again?

The sheer happiness that I have found as a sober woman is greater than any high that I ever experienced. I wake up every morning without a hangover or user’s remorse. I dance whenever and wherever I can, even while trying on clothes in stores, or at parties where nobody else has hit the dance floor. I run by the beach, singing out loud, without worrying that I may die of a stroke due to last night’s excesses. I practice yoga and can actually “be” on the mat for ninety minutes, breathing freely through my once stuffed nostrils.

I have a disease, and that disease is called addiction. I am no longer ashamed and hiding behind it. Addiction is not a weakness or a character defect. It is a debilitating disease without a medicine to cure it. Money cannot buy my recovery, but working a daily program can keep me sober, one day at a time. Every day I go to a 12-step meeting. I remind myself that I’m an addict in recovery and I reset my brain and ask for the strength to remain sober just for today. I am of service to others in recovery, showing them that this simple program works. It isn’t always easy, but it is always worth it. My worst day sober is always better than my best day high, because I am authentic and free and living the very best version of myself. I hope that Wendy Williams hits her bottom soon, and without any terrible consequences. I would love her to live in one of my sober houses.

Mad About Jewelry

THE MUSEUM OF ARTS AND DESIGN’S ANNUAL EXHIBITION AND SALE OF CONTEMPORARY JEWELRY RETURNS WITH 55 ARTISTS FROM 18 COUNTRIES

LOOT: MAD ABOUT JEWELRY

April 8 – April 13, 2019

Opening Benefit: April 8

Featuring the announcement of the LOOT Acquisition Prize and the presentation of LOOT Awards honoring Adria de Haume and Josie Natori

The Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) presents the nineteenth edition of LOOT: MAD About Jewelry, its annual exhibition and sale of one-of-a-kind contemporary jewelry. Open to the public April 9 through April 13, following the Opening Benefit on April 8, LOOT 2019 showcases the work of fifty-five emerging and acclaimed international jewelry artists and designers, most of whom have never been shown in New York. The event provides the rare opportunity for collectors and jewelry enthusiasts to meet and acquire pieces from some of the most innovative creators in the field.

“The jewelry content of LOOT 2019 is particularly noteworthy in two specific areas,” said LOOT Curator Bryna Pomp. “Firstly, this year’s exhibition presents a great number of outstanding young makers who are already creating groundbreaking work. Secondly, it features a larger presence of jewelry in precious metals, particularly in silver and in gold, often with semi precious and precious stones, that is exceptionally original in design.”

MAD is the only museum in the United States with a gallery dedicated to the display of both special jewelry exhibitions and its permanent collection of contemporary and modern studio and art jewelry. LOOT extends MAD’s commitment to presenting jewelry as an art form, and provides vital support for Museum exhibitions and programs.

“LOOT reflects the core of MAD’s mission to celebrate the creative process and connect audiences to contemporary art and design,” said Marsy Mittlemann, LOOT 2019 Co-Chair. “It presents an extraordinary opportunity for artists and viewers to interact with one another and engage in conversations around the work. I am honored to participate in an event that provides a platform for international talent while supporting MAD’s exciting upcoming initiatives.”

“LOOT is always exceptionally curated, and 2019 promises to be the best edition to date,” said LOOT 2019 Co-Chair Joan Hornig. “No other exhibition in the world brings viewers into contact with the diversity of design and designers showcased each spring at MAD. It is the perfect venue for both serious and first-time collectors to engage with global talent and purchase unique pieces of wearable art at every price point.”

LOOT 2019 features fifty-five artists from eighteen countries and territories: Austria (1), Belgium (1), Chile (2), Finland (1), France (2), Germany (6), Italy (2), Korea (5), Poland (1), Portugal (2), Spain (5), Sweden (1), Taiwan (1), Thailand (1), Turkey (3), the United Kingdom (14), the United States (6), and the US Virgin Islands (1). In addition to a diverse range of artistic practices, the jewelry on display encompasses a wide array of materials, from traditional metals to more unconventional media like leather, glass, porcelain, paper, silicone, resin, textiles, wood, horsehair, recycled skateboards, and ultraviolet-reactive nylon.

ARTIST HIGHLIGHTS

The jewelry artists and designers featured in LOOT 2019 include the following:

  • Italian designer Selvaggia Armani designs and produces textiles, including necklaces and brooches, for home and casual wear. On site at LOOT, she will create a new collection of jewelry made of hand-painted leather, building on her practice of “live” painting and customized bracelets.
  • Japan-born and Massachusetts-based artist Mariko Kusumoto prevails upon fabric to construct forms of elegant simplicity and evocative imagery. Using a proprietary heat- setting technique, she gives the fabric a new identity through reshaping it into three- dimensional forms. Her designs are incorporated into jewelry and sculptural pieces, as well as in collaborations with fashion designers; in January, her work appeared on the Jean-Paul Gaultier catwalk at Paris Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2019.
  • Taiwanese jewelry artist Heng Lee juxtaposes traditional craft technique and cutting- edge technology to explore the relationship between nature and Internet culture. Using downloaded images, laser-cut metal, and hand embroidery, he creates visually striking pieces that are both digital and tactile. In a time when much of our information comes from social media, his work interrogates the divide between experience and technology, and encourages full awareness of the current moment.
  • Scotland-based artist Wanshu Li is largely inspired by the brilliant colors and sensuous movements of sea creatures like jellyfish and sea anemones. With her jewelry, she aims to create a multisensory wearing experience that involves visual enjoyment, tactility, and sound. Li’s fascination with dance culture, laser light shows, and stage performances inspired her to add a further visual dimension to her practice: she experiments with ultraviolet-reactive nylon and fluorescent paints, which combine to produce a remarkable intensity of color when the jewelry is illuminated with UV light.
  • Houston-based designer Mariquita Masterson creates handmade glass pieces that are vivid, unique, and energetic, and that unite the everyday with the exceptional. Masterson uses both recycled glass and glass from companies that produce a variety of colors and textures, and on occasion creates stunning pieces out of the fragments of broken antique vases. Most recently, Masterson has gained attention for the debut of one of her necklaces worn by Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi during the President’s State of the Union address in February.

This year, LOOT will showcase the work of four 2018 graduates of La Escuela de Arte 3, in Madrid, Spain: Patricia Álvarez, Cristina Armesilla, Sonia Birndt Carrascosa, and Bárbara García. The jewelry of these emerging creators exhibits fresh expressions of color and form, and takes inspiration from music, technology, contradiction, and the city they call home.

In its first year, the LOOT Advisory Committee assists LOOT Curator Bryna Pomp with the selection of artists and designers. The LOOT Advisory Committee for 2019 includes Susan Ach, Michele Cohen, Marsy Mittlemann, and Barbara Waldman.

LOOT ACQUISITION PRIZE

Awarded annually by a jury, the LOOT Acquisition Prize recognizes a LOOT jewelry artist or designer whose work reflects maturity in artistry and concept, exhibits both a superior and an experimental understanding of materials and form, and demonstrates expertise in technique and execution. MAD’s permanent collection includes nearly one thousand pieces of jewelry, spanning the mid-twentieth century to the present day. The LOOT Acquisition Prize formalizes the Museum’s goal of enhancing its collection by acquiring jewelry from artists who have made significant contributions to the field and whose work provides historical context for MAD’s mid- to late-twentieth-century pieces, as well as from emerging artists who are an important force in the contemporary art jewelry scene.

The 2019 jury is chaired by Barbara Paris Gifford and Elissa Auther together with LOOT Co- Chairs Joan Hornig and Marsy Mittlemann, LOOT Curator Bryna Pomp, and Board Chair Michele Cohen. The 2019 LOOT Acquisition Prize will be awarded on April 8 during the Opening Benefit dinner.

In 2018, the prize was jointly awarded to Isabelle Molénat and Sarran Youkongdee. Past LOOT artists who have had works acquired by the Museum include the well-established art jeweler Iris Nieuwenburg and the emerging jewelry artist Casey Sobel. Alena Willroth, who was awarded the inaugural LOOT Acquisition Prize in 2016, will be a returning artist this year.
