Big Sean × McDonald’s Partner to Surprise a Young Rapper with Mentorship

McDonald’s has partnered with award-winning rapper, singer and songwriter Big Sean to serve as the second mentor in the newly-launched McDonald’s Black & Positively Golden Mentors program. This virtual content series is a continuation of the company’s increased focus on serving up bright futures by providing opportunities for education and skills in the communities it serves. Starting today, people can tune in to @wearegolden on IGTV to watch Big Sean share tips and wisdom with Michigan-native Nyla Lewis during an exclusive mentoring session.

Mentorship is near and dear to Detroit-native Big Sean who partnered with McDonald’s Black & Positively Golden movement through his Sean Anderson Foundation. His foundation is dedicated to the education, health, safety and well-being of youth in underserved communities across the country, which aligns with McDonald’s commitment to feeding and fostering community.

“Mentorship can be key to success,” said Big Sean, who attributes mentorship as having a role in his success. “I definitely benefitted from guidance as a young adult and aspiring artist, so it’s an honor to partner with McDonald’s to pay it forward as a Black & Positively Golden mentor who is helping another artist navigate her music career.”

During Big Sean and 19-year-old Nyla’s mentoring session, the two discuss their commonalities as Michigan natives, their musical inspirations, and the Grammy-nominated rapper shares advice on navigating the music industry. During the session, Nyla was also surprised with a computer decked out with professional music editing software, and gifted another mentor session with Roc Nation digital, marketing and artist management representatives, courtesy of Big Sean, McDonald’s and its franchisees.

“Big Sean is a huge inspiration, and I appreciate him taking the time to mentor me,” said Nyla. “I began my music career in elementary school and always dreamed of connecting with a major artist like him. This is the surprise and gift of a lifetime that has put me closer to living my dream. I appreciate McDonald’s for making it happen.”

McDonald’s Black & Positively Golden Mentors is an extension of the company’s focus on elevating the next generation of leaders. Over the summer, McDonald’s and its franchisees announced a $500,000 scholarship fund for HBCU students in partnership with Thurgood Marshall College Fund. Since then, 34 HBCU students have received $15,000 scholarships, and two students have received $10,000 each in seed capital to help fund their businesses through the McDonald’s and Essence Girls United “Making Moves Now” Virtual pitch competition.

“Understanding that mentorship can lead to leadership, McDonald’s and our franchisees are proud to give young people access to industry resources and insights through the Black & Positively Golden Mentors program,” said Margaret “Marty” Gillis, a New Jersey McDonald’s franchisee and national diversity marketing committee lead. “We are excited to connect these talented changemakers to people they admire and, in the process, create masterclasses from which others can benefit.”

The McDonald’s Black & Positively Golden Mentors program will continue in 2021. Gospel music vocalist and entrepreneur Kierra Sheard, journalist and activist Jamilah Lemieux, and professional race car driver Bubba Wallace are among the mentors who will be featured next year.

OUT CELEBRATES ANNUAL OUT100 ISSUE

Pride Media’s Out magazine is thrilled to release the 2020 Out100 presented by Lexus. The list remains the largest annual portfolio recognizing members of the LGBTQ+ for their ground-breaking, ripple-inducing, and culture-shifting impact nationwide.

The coveted and anticipated Out100 issue features four covers including trailblazing actor Wilson Cruz, activist and BLM organizer Janaya Khan,  actor and director Joe Mantello, and artist and icon Janelle Monáe.

This year’s honorees make up one of the most diverse lists in Out magazine’s history, spanning several generations and a multitude of intersections. From 18-year-old rap sensation Kidd Kenn and 99-year old trans WWII U.S. Navy fighter pilot Robina Asti to MSNBC journalist Rachel Maddow, who in a year of political tension was a voice of reason for the LGBTQ+ community.

From fashion legend André Leon Talley, headlining musician Lizzo, comedian Wanda Sykes, actors Jeremy Pope and Cheyenne Jackson to modeling industry heavyweight Ivan Bart, the creators of Queer Eye, and Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’s very queer team Jamal Brown, Reggie Greer, and Karine Jean-Pierre, inclusivity and progress are the driving force behind this year’s list.

Each honoree represents not just the past but also the future. Leading into 2021, the LGBTQ+ community as a whole will undoubtedly reap the benefits of their accomplishments. This year might have brought an onslaught of challenges, but it also welcomed new opportunities to reflect on what matters to the LGBTQ+ community and what lies ahead in the fight for equality and justice.

Now more than ever, it’s vital to recognize the powerful voices leading the charge and sounding off the new vanguard of queer leaders. In a year of Pride celebrated at home instead of in the streets, community support from company partners like Lexus, Citi, Gilead, McDonald’s USA, Truly Hard Seltzer, and Stoli® Group USA, LLC has never been more important or helpful in amplifying these powerful Out100 voices moving the LGBTQ+ community forward.

“Community building has been the bedrock of the LGBTQ+ rights movement, and part of that is understanding the fact that we are not and have never been monolithic. All of us have a story and role to play in this fight. All of our experiences and lived realities are different, special, and integral in building a better world — together,” said Editor in Chief of Out, David Artavia.

“The Out100 list is a representation of this journey. For 26 years, it has stood the test of time and continues to empower the next generation of LGBTQ+ thought leaders, artists, and professionals to create a more inclusive future for all of us,” continued Artavia.

This year, Out’s nationally recognized and respected Out100 issue extends beyond the brand’s print and online properties with two exciting virtual events. On Friday, November 20, the co-founder of Black Lives Matter Canada, Janaya Khan, will moderate a dynamic “How Do We Come Back From This?” symposium on what moving out of the last four years looks like for culture, politics, the movement, and ourselves, including Emmy-winning creator of Transparent Joey Soloway, trans activist Ashlee Marie Preston, and PR strategist Kelly Bush Novak.

On Saturday, November 21, the Out100 culminates in the first-ever 2020 Out100 Virtual Honoree Induction Ceremony, live at 5 p.m. Pacific (8 p.m. Eastern) at Out.com/Out100Live, and available on all Revry live channels and on-demand at 6 p.m. Pacific (9 p.m. Eastern) at watch.revry.tv.

McDonald’s sponsors K-pop event – the KCON:TACT season 2 premier

Fans can connect virtually with hit group, The Boyz, through a special segment presented by McDonald’s

If you are a K-pop stan, McDonald’s has your back this KCON season as a premier sponsor of the world’s largest celebration of Korean culture and music. Starting today through October 25, fans can experience KCON:TACT season 2, virtually, from their living room (or location of choice).

On Sunday, October 25, fans can watch “Crush Moment with The Boyz,” a special segment sponsored by McDonald’s that will feature the 11-member boy group, a headlining KCON:TACT performer. Over the last couple of weeks via social media, The Boyz invited their loyal fan base, “THE B,” to share the first moment they fell in love with the group. The Boyz will choose the top moments and reenact them during the segment.

“We’re excited to continue our partnership with KCON for the sixth consecutive year, and especially during this time when people’s access to fun and meaningful events and moments are limited and vastly different,” said Elizabeth Campbell, McDonald’s Senior Director of Cultural Engagement. “We recognize how important K-Pop is to our customers and are proud to continue celebrating this iconic cultural event, and giving fans access to The Boyz.”

McDonald’s has been a long-time sponsor of KCON with pop-ups at both the New York and Los Angeles events. Last year, convention attendees sampled World Famous Fries® and ice cream, met their favorite K-pop idols, and tried their hand at winning branded goodies through retro-style arcade machines. McDonald’s was also the livestream sponsor, bringing the concert directly to fans watching at home.

“We are excited to partner with McDonald’s to connect with our fans virtually, and give them a special moment,” said The Boyz. “We can’t wait for this segment as we know our beloved THE B is going to love it.”

For details about the full 10-day KCON:TACT experience, visit www.kconusa.com. The entire program will be streamed exclusively on Mnet K-Pop (www.youtube.com/mnet) and KCON official YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/kcon).

Travis Scott x McDonald’s

By Hannah DiPilato

Hip Hop fans everywhere have been buzzing about Travis Scott’s recent collaboration with McDonald’s that includes both a meal and special merchandise.

The “Travis Scott Meal” is the artist’s go-to McDonald’s order: a quarter pounder with lettuce and bacon, a medium fry, a sprite, and barbecue sauce. The meal costs $6 and is available for dine-in, carry-out, and at the drive-thru. Although this is not an unusual order, fans have been rushing to get the superstars meal of choice.

For those that want the McDonald’s kick without the calories, Scott released an extensive line of McDonald’s x Cactus Jack merchandise. The merch, available on Scott’s website, channels the energy of Scott’s hip hop culture and the classic love for McDonald’s that fans everywhere have in common.

Fans can choose from a variety of clothing such as t-shirts, hoodies, and pants, all of which have a unique Cactus Jack and McDonald’s design. Some clothing pieces display a more subtle love for McDonald’s like a simple McDonald’s logo, while others illustrate a Travis Scott figurine reining over a quarter pounder meal.

For fans that want to display their love for Cactus Jack and McDonald’s in other ways, Scott also dropped accessories and decorations. This includes a variety of rugs, a Cactus Pack blanket, and the McNugget body pillow that has gained a lot of popularity on social media.

This is the first celebrity collaboration McDonald’s has done since 1992 when the company partnered with Michael Jordan. McDonald’s is hoping this celebrity collaboration will boost their sales that are down from the previous year by thirty percent. McDonald’s CEO, Chris Kempczinski, brushed this loss off as a result of the pandemic.

In the announcement of the collaboration made by McDonald’s, Scott explained he “couldn’t be more excited to bring the collaboration to life.” He also expressed how the collaboration is “bringing together two iconic worlds.”

In the same announcement, McDonald’s U.S. Chief Marketing officer Morgan Flatley said “everyone has a favorite McDonald’s meal, no matter who you are.” He also mentioned that the company is “excited to bring the Travis Scott Meal to a McDonald’s near you.”

Scott promoted the collaboration on both his Instagram and Twitter accounts. He included a photo in the drive-thru window flashing a McDonald’s bag and a bedazzled chain, as well as a promotional video featuring an explanation of his order with his classic Travis Scott autotune.

The excitement began on September third when McDonald’s tweeted a cactus and hamburger emoji hinting at a collaboration. Travis then retweeted this tweet with “CACTUS JACK FOR MCDONALD’S” and stimulated excitement within his fanbase.

This promotion will be available until October 4th, but merchandise could be gone sooner. This merchandise channels the nostalgia of McDonald’s from the past while still including the bold energy that is Travis Scott. Whether you’re more of a hip-hop fan or a McDonald’s regular, the extensive merchandise page will give everyone something to choose from. To put it simply, and in the words of Travis Scott, “It’s Lit.”

Selena Gomez launches Rare Beauty, Broken Hearts Gallery to Hit Theaters Friday

This week has been very eventful for artist Selena Gomez. The line includes 20 makeup products and accessories, available in a variety of shades and colors. Items can be purchased on the Rare Beauty website, as well as online and in stores at Sephora.

Along with the makeup line, Rare Beauty also established the Rare Impact Fund to support the mental health of the brand’s community, employees and partners. The brand shared their mission via Instagram “to shape conversations around beauty, self-acceptance, and mental health.”

Broken Hearts Gallery, a film executive produced by Gomez, will be released in theaters on Friday Sep. 10. Gomez took to Instagram on Monday to share a special trailer of the film and encourage those who see it in movie theaters to follow COVID-19 safety guidelines.

McDonald’s x Cactus Jack Collab

This is Mcdonald’s first collaboration with a big celebrity since they featured a Michael Jordan-themed meal on their menu in 1992.

Burger King VS McDonald’s

Burger King and McDonald’s are at it again. Burger King Finland places outdoor ads outside its competitors restaurants promising free delivery – if you set your order’s pickup location to a McDonald’s restaurant.

“Nearly every district in Helsinki has a McDonald’s restaurant. Sadly Burger King is not quite as common. We feel for the whopper-less city dwellers of these regions. We know how it feels like to yearn for the taste of our juicy flame-grilled burgers. But lucky for them, there’s an easy fix”, says Kaisa Kasila, Brand Manager of Burger King.

Burger King turns local McDonald’s into their delivery hot-spots. Helsinkians can order out Burger King and pick up their order from their nearest McDonald’s restaurants free of charge from the 29th of June to the 1st of July.

A local food delivery and takeout app Wolt (similar to UberEats) is in with the prank.

Burger King and McDonald’s have created a global prank war. Earlier this year in Scandinavia Burger King made “The Moldy Whopper” – a small jab at McDonald’s. The experiment wasn’t tasty, but more of a unique way to show how the classic burger is free of artificial preservatives.

And just because nothing is sacred, Burger King has pulled pranks on other franchises as well, like Star Wars.

McDonald’s accepts petition

Food activist and New York Times bestselling author Kathy Freston, who has led a national campaign for McDonald’s to add a plant-based burger to its menu, threw a massive party outside of McDonald’s headquarters in Chicago this afternoon, bringing 220,000 signatures from her Change.org petition calling for a vegan burger directly to McDonald’s. The petition delivery was accompanied by a carnival-like atmosphere, including Impossible Whopper taste tests, a Vegan Hamburglar, a balloon installation and more.

“We celebrated outside McDonald’s today to send the exact message that McDonald’s CEO said he wanted to hear: that customers were interested in a plant-based burger,” said Freston, who has been pushing McDonald’s for a plant-based burger for years. “Fast-food companies are adding plant-based options seemingly every week. How much more demand does McDonald’s need to hear before they listen to customers?”

Representatives from McDonald’s accepted petition starter Kathy Freston’s petition delivery today, but their Vice President of Global Communications, Michael Gonda, made this statement in response to the event: “As a customer obsessed, modern and progressive burger company, we’re committed to offering a variety of menu choices. That often starts by listening to customers to understand changing trends and evolving tastes—so any and all feedback is appreciated.”

“If feedback is what McDonald’s wants, feedback is what McDonald’s is going to continue to get,” said Tegan Gregory, Senior Campaigner at Change.org, the online petition platform where more than 220,000 people have signed a petition for McDonald’s to add a plant-based burger. “This petition is one of the largest food petitions in Change.org history, and even though McDonald’s refused to meet with activists today, they’re not going to be able to ignore the continuing demand for meat alternatives. Burger King, White Castle, Del Taco, Tim Horton’s and more are listening to customer demand, which is leaving everyone asking why McDonald’s is behind the curve.”

A recent study by GlobalData found that 70 percent of global consumers are lowering their meat intake or avoiding it altogether. Barclays predicts the market for meat substitutes could soar to US $140 billion over the next decade.
