Yamaha Apex X-TX vs. Ski-Doo 800 E-Tec — Which is the Best Snowmobile?

Yamaha and Ski-Doo are two of the biggest names in the snowmobile industry and since both brands have earned quite a reputation for themselves, it’s not easy to choose between the two. Not to worry, though, as we’ll compare two popular nameplates from both brands and find out which is best. In the blue corner, we have the widely recognized Yamaha Apex X-TX, while in the red corner, we have Ski Doo’s MXZ X-RS 800R E-TEC, a strong contender indeed.

To select a winner, this article will look at several parameters, including overall performance, utility, price, and maintenance fees. But before we begin, it’s important to mention that a snowmobile’s ownership costs and whether or not it’s a good choice for you will largely depend on your specific usage. For instance, a bigger sled is a better option if you’ll mostly use yours to travel with a lot of gear, while smaller and more maneuverable ones are better suited for enthusiasts. Similarly, your average mileage will have a direct impact on the service requirements (and a quick look inside your Ski-Doo 800R or Yamaha Apex owner’s manual will reveal that snowmobiles need to be maintained quite regularly).

Still, if you are into winter trips in deep snow, there’s no better option than a decent sled. So which one should you go for — Yamaha or Ski-Doo?

Let’s see about that!

Engine and Performance

For a start, the Apex X-TX and Ski-Doo 800R E-Tec are both performance snowmobiles built for speed and endurance — no slouch here. As a result, it doesn’t come as a surprise that the Apex X-TX is one of Yamaha’s best-selling performance snowmobiles, thanks to the four-stroke liquid-cooled engine producing a solid 150 hp. Meanwhile, the Ski-Doo 800 E-Tec gets a two-stroke inline engine, churning out 146 hp.

As a result of the larger four-stroke Genesis 150 TFI 998cc engine, the Apex is much heavier, which has a negative impact on driving dynamics. On the other hand, the E-Tec packs a lighter 800 cc Rotax engine, giving Ski-Doo’s snowmobile a better power-to-weight ratio. Put simply, the Apex X-TX has a higher top speed at 115 mph, while the 800 E-Tec is still the quicker of the two, despite the small power deficiency.

As a result, the Yamaha Apex X-TX is undeniably more stable, especially in deep powder, and has a higher towing capacity, which is a plus if you plan to carry a trailer up the hill.

So if you want a snowmobile that is lighter, quicker, and more maneuverable, the Ski-Doo 800 E-Tec should be your go-to choice. If you prefer a bigger and more practical snowmobile that can tow heavier loads, the Apex X-TX is what you need.

Driving Experience

Without a doubt, both snowmobiles have been designed with driving experience in mind. Ski-Doo has paid a lot of attention to its customer’s needs and has installed independent double A-arm suspension, stabilizer bar, and KYB shock absorbers at the front. Things are equally interesting at the rear with KYB adjustable gas shocks and rMotion suspension. All these enhancements make the Ski-Doo playful and lively to drive.

Meanwhile, the X-TX’s independent double-wishbone type suspension with a Fox Float high-pressure gas rear shock absorber provides a smoother driving experience. Still, the Apex does feel like a handful at first and needs getting used to, though the power steering helps mitigate that.

Price

It’s important to remember that snowmobiles are costly, and if you are looking to get your hands on one, you should be prepared financially. If you are on a budget, a used model would undeniably be a better choice. Indeed, snowmobiles depreciate a lot faster in comparison to cars. Notably, a brand-new snowmobile can lose up to 60% of its original value in the first four years.

For instance, if you bought a new Yamaha Apex X-TX in 2016, it would have cost you around $14,700. Today, you can easily get a used model for as low as $4,000 — that’s definitely not to neglect. Still, we would advise against buying extremely cheap samples as they might incur heftier maintenance costs. Go for models priced between $6,000 and $8,000 instead, which may still sound a bit expensive for a used sled but you’ll be saving much more on replacement parts in the long run.

And if that’s out of your budget, it might be a good idea to switch to the Ski-Doo, a cheaper model overall. Indeed, you’ll find several Ski-Doo 800 E-Tec in proper condition online, priced well below the $6,000 mark — and if you are lucky enough, you might even land a mint 800 E-Tec for $5,000.

Again, regardless of what you decide to buy, always carefully inspect it using a trusted Ski-Doo or Yamaha Apex repair manual (not sure where to get one? eManualOnline have you covered). Watch out for signs of wear and tear, such as cracks in the track, defective front suspensions, or a leaking engine. I know, buying your first sled is always a good feeling, but making a hasty purchase will only lead to tears later down the road.

Maintenance and Parts Expense

Yamaha has always been a manufacturer of reliable products and carries the same reputation in the snowmobile industry. However, you will find that replacement parts for the Ski-Doo 800 E-Tec are generally much more affordable (though the engine tends to be a tad more problematic).

For instance, owners spend on average between $250 and $280 annually to maintain their 800 E-Tec, while the X-TX would set you back well over $300. A fresh new pair of skis for your X-TX can cost $160, while the same for an 800 E-Tec starts from $119.

The difference is even more significant with larger components. For example, a crankcase assembly on the X-TX is priced over $2,000 compared to only $979 for the 800 E-Tec. Other parts such as the water pump, cylinder heads, and radiator hoses also cost more on the X-TX.

And these were just the part-related expenses, but you will also need to consider labor charges, which are no less than $100 per hour. If you are looking to keep maintenance costs on the lower side, I would highly suggest getting a Ski-Doo or Yamaha Apex service manual and start taking matters into your own hands. After all, repairing your own sled is always your best bet to cut down on labor costs. A seasoned DIY’er can save up to $100-$150 annually just on maintenance and repair.

Last Words

So which one is better? Which one should you buy? Well, it depends on what you want it for. The Ski-Doo 800 E-Tec is lighter and more agile, and frankly, much more fun to drive. However, the Yamaha Apex X-TX is more durable and excels at other tasks, like towing and keeping the driver in the driver’s seat.

Therefore, if you favor performance over practicality and want to keep maintenance costs down, the Ski-Doo 800 E-Tec is the right snowmobile for you. It is quicker, much easier to handle and parts are also cheaper. Meanwhile, the X-TX is more powerful and ideal for hauling, long distances, and heavy-duty use.

In short, both are suited for specific rider styles but are each excellent at what they do — you simply can’t go wrong with either model, to be honest!

MR-G SERIES

G-SHOCK EXPANDS PINNACLE MR-G SERIES WITH NEW MODELS IN THE CLASSIC SQUARE SHAPE OF THE FIRST EVER G-SHOCK

Premium Timepieces Feature 25 Individually Polished Components Assembled Precisely for a Timepiece that Showcases Craftsmanship

Casio introduces the newest additions to its pinnacle G-SHOCK MR-G lineup with the launch of the MRGB5000 series. With the new models, the MRGB5000D-1 and MRGB5000B-1, the trademark square shape of the original G-SHOCK DW5000 is elevated to provide shock resistance with the addition of premium materials and the artisan craftsmanship and quality that the MR-G series represents. The enhanced bezel and case have been constructed of 25 individual components with Sallaz polishing applied to each part prior to assembly, giving the watches a stunning, elegant finish.

The new MRGB5000 models pay homage to the original G-SHOCK, DW5000C, by retaining the iconic brick pattern and red outline of the original G-SHOCK dial design. The MRGB5000B-1 is crafted with a DLC coating on the case and band to deliver enhanced wear resistance and a sleek, all-black look that pays tribute to G-SHOCK’s signature brand color. Gold-colored ion plating on the buttons and screw-lock case back evoke the refinement of the MR-G series as well. The silver-colored MRGB5000D-1 is made with a titanium carbide finish to enhance the beauty of its bezel and band.

The bezels of the new timepieces are made from premium materials, such as COBARION, a cobalt-chrome alloy that is four times harder than titanium and is part of a 25-piece Multi-Guard Structure, specifically developed for the MRGB5000, to protect the module with superior shock-absorption by incorporating flat springs and resin buffers between the components of the watch. Additionally, Ti64 is used for the case and the band employs DAT55G, a titanium alloy about three times harder than pure titanium to further enhance the absolute toughness of the models.

In addition, the MRGB5000D-1 and MRGB5000B-1 boast premium G-SHOCK technical features including Bluetooth® functionality that allows the watch to be connected to a smartphone via the CASIO Watches app, MULTIBAND 6 Atomic Timekeeping, Tough Solar Charging, Super LED illumination, and more.

As part of the release, G-SHOCK has unveiled an exclusive collection page taking consumers through the features, which can be viewed HERE.

The new timepieces also come equipped with G-SHOCK technology including:

To celebrate this years upcoming International Women’s Day, Naya Traveler had the chance to chat with Blanca Londono. Blanca runs Colombia’s Finca Silletera – a female-owned business that puts tradition, culture and female empowerment at the forefront of their principles.

Born and raised in Santa Elena, Blanca works with her family on making silletas for decades. The business is something so sacred to her family, something passed down throughout their family history.

Q: Blanca, what are the traditional types of silletas?

A: The silletas can be presented in different types: the monumental, where the arrangement is made flower by flower, emblematic (flat), artistic (in three dimensions) and traditional. They are built using dozens of types of flowers.

Q: How many women in the family are dedicated to this?

A: Six sisters and three daughters. My three daughters and I plant and pick the flowers, we sell them and parade.

Q: What is it about Santa Elena that makes it such a special ideal area for flower-growing?

A: Santa Elena has very good, generous land. We are located 8,500 ft above sea level: we could plant anything in this soil. We don’t use greenhouses, everything is open air land, and we only use organic fertilizers.

Q: What are your childhood memories, growing up in the silleteros tradition?

A: I treasure the most beautiful memories being absolute winners in all 4 versions of silletas. The greatest pride is to be recognized among many artisans. It means that our teamwork is shared and celebrated as an entire family.

Q: How do people live their daily lives in Santa Elena?

A: Here people are wonderful, chatty, we love gathering among neighbors, cousins, siblings… people are so very kind.

Q: Blanca, how would you define Colombians and being Colombian?

A: Colombians are hardworking, honest, straight-forward. We value peace, tranquility and have much respect for visitors, wanting them to have a great experience when traveling around our Country. To me, being Colombian is the greatest thing in life. And living in Santa Elena is something I take immense pride in.

What to Do When Your Car Breaks Down

Breaking down is many people’s worst nightmare and it can completely ruin your day. Having to pull your car over to the side of the road and wait in the rain for help is not what you expect to be doing when you set off on your journey.

Aside from being an unenjoyable and embarrassing experience, a breakdown can be costly, whether you have a fuel-based or electric vehicle. If it has been caused by an underlying issue in your car, you could end up spending hundreds getting it fixed.

If your vehicle has never broken down before, you might have no idea how to deal with it. But knowing what to do when your car breaks down can save you a lot of time if and when it happens.

Here are some top tips on what you should do in the event of a breakdown.

Move Your Car to the Side of the Road

Whether you’re driving on a main road, side road, or motorway, your priority must be to get your car out of the road. Put your hazard lights on and move your vehicle to the side of the road or the hard shoulder.

Once your car is safely out of the way of other vehicles, everybody should vacate the car. If you’re traveling with animals, keep them safe in the car.

It’s not always possible to push your vehicle onto the hard shoulder if you’re driving on the motorway. If this is the case, stay in the car with your seatbelt fastened, put your hazard lights on, and call the emergency services.

Call Your Breakdown Provider

Many people try and wave down a passing car in the hopes that the driver will be able to help. Many people carry a pair of vehicle boosting cables in their cars that can be used to jump-start other vehicles.

However, it isn’t always possible to flag somebody down. Even if you do, there’s no guaranteeing that they will have the right equipment to get your car started again.

If you have a breakdown provider, now is the time to call them. You will need the details of your vehicle and your location. If you aren’t sure where you are, try to find significant landmarks that you can point out to the person on the phone.

Once you have called your breakdown provider, sit and wait. Don’t try to repair anything or move your car elsewhere. You have to be patient and stay put!

If you don’t have a mobile phone with you, try and walk to the nearest emergency phone. These will be clearly defined and they should be placed at regular intervals along the highway.

Your breakdown provider may take 30 minutes or they may take several hours to reach you. When they arrive, they will l fix your car by the side of the road and help you to get going.

If you’re returning to a busy motorway, you’ll need to build up your speed on the hard shoulder so that you can safely merge back in with the oncoming traffic.

Ahead of his upcoming album mainstream sellout (Bad Boy/Interscope Records) on March 25, rock dynamo Machine Gun Kelly serves up a new EP, lockdown sessions, out now. The EP bundles three viral hit tracks that showcase the versatility behind one of the era’s most impactful crossover hitmakers.

The three-pack includes “roll the windows up,” a fan-favorite track previously known as “smoke and drive.” The update comes with more than a name change, though. MGK tacked on a new verse and shot a music video for the song, featuring the superstar and his drummer, Rook, smoking in a car in a no-frills, straightforward clip that captures the homegrown essence of a project strictly for the fans. Watch the full clip HERE.

The EP kicks off what’s sure to be a whirlwind month for MGK, whose new song, “ay!” arrives this Friday, March 4. Audiences caught a sneak preview of it during his Feb. 24 performance on CBS’ The Late Late Show With James Corden in a medley of “maybe,” “ay!” and current single “emo girl,” with WILLOW. The latter continues to build on its scorching start, with over 30 million streams and racing to the top 25 on alternative radio. All three songs will appear on MGK’s sixth studio album, mainstream sellout, coming March 25. Pre-order the new album HERE.

MGK has dominated the live space in the past month by performing on some of sports’ biggest stages, beginning with a headlining slot at the 2022 NHL All-Star Game in Las Vegas, where delivered a scintillating halftime performance for hockey and rock enthusiasts. And in the lead-up to this year’s Super Bowl, he and Halsey united for a blockbuster teamup for a Bud Light sponsored show at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
