COVID Mask Care illustration by Mina Tocalini for use by 360 Magazine

Mask Care

Board-Certified Dermatologist Elizabeth Mullans, M.D., from Uptown Dermatology in Houston, TX discusses the best ways to adapt your skincare routine when wearing a mask, ways to avoid ‘mask-ne’ and her top tips to help avoid skin irritation caused by masks.

How can a mask potentially cause irritation on the skin? Masks trap sweat and moisture which along with friction from the fabric can disrupt the skin’s protective barrier. This can result in irritation of the skin. Residue from laundry detergent can also become embedded in the fabric and cause further irritation. It is best to use a hypoallergenic detergent such as Arm and Hammer Free and Clear Sensitive Skin.

What kind of masks is best to wear right now? The best masks will contain several layers of fabric. Cotton is the best fabric on the inner lining touching the skin because it is less irritating than synthetic materials. Masks should be washed every day in hot water with laundry detergent and white vinegar (has antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties) and dried on higher heat settings in the dryer. Detergents with fragrances can leave residue in the fabric, which can also cause a rash in people with sensitive skin.

What skincare routines should one pick up in order to keep their skin healthy? Wearing too many products under the mask, which can cause build up on the skin. Make sure to keep a benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid gel to spot treat pimples and also try to cut down on carbohydrate and sugar intake which can also cause breakouts. Wash face twice a day, before and after wearing the mask. Acne prone individuals may benefit from cleansers that contain salicylic acid. Avoid heavy moisturizers and makeup in the areas covered by the mask. Assuming skin is not too sensitive, if not already using one, this is a good time to start a retinol cream or gel – start several nights a week with a pea sized amount, and gradually increase the frequency.

6 Proactive Ways a Hospital Billing Company Can Maximize Your Revenue Collection

By MedcareMSO

The federal government has brought about a lot of changes in the US healthcare system since the past few years. These changes have introduced a lot of challenges for providers and patients alike. Many aspects of healthcare reform including; the introduction of more time-consuming, value-based compensation models and the frequent alterations to hospital medical billing rules and regulations can cause a significant range of revenue loss for providers across the United States.

Therefore, if providers fail to stay up-to-date on hospital billing rules and regulations result in providers leaving approximately $125 billion in uncollected revenue each year. Specialty practitioners like radiologists face even greater difficulties due to the complexity of their billing procedures.

Simultaneously, patients can’t afford increasingly expensive healthcare services due to high-deductible plans. Therefore, hospitals should partner with a reliable hospital billing company that can help them guide them strategies to help them encounter these challenges.

How can a hospital billing company help you over hurdles?

Let’s paint a dismal picture of the financial health of the industry with authentic data paints. It would help providers to analyze their reimbursement models and mitigate practice financial issues and compliance risks. In this article, I have enlisted 6 proactive ways that can help providers to take a proactive approach to maximize their revenue generation.

1. Prepare a Clear Collections Process

All practices require a collection process to ensure the financial health of their medical business. They should establish a step-by-step procedure that clarifies the procedure for all. It can greatly improve revenue cycles by ensuring patients are properly and thoroughly aware of their responsibilities.

2. Focus on Claim Management Properly

According to a recent study, 80% of claims are rejected due to errors yearly. Due to the strict policies of insurance companies about accurate medical billing and coding practices, they are likely going to end up being rejected. Therefore, practitioners should prepare claim management that focuses on streamlining each step with 100% focus on the cycle of submission, rejection, editing and resubmission can take weeks. It often results in providers waiting for months prior to receiving payment for their services.

3. Minimize Coding Errors

Medical coders describe the performed medical procedures within a claim using standardized medical codes. It makes the claims easy to understand and proceed for further levels. These codes can use ICD-10_CM, CPT and HCPCS Level II classification systems. This process provides a standard method of describing procedures. However, a hospital billing specialist can ensure that the claim is prepared with less or no error. So it can be reimbursed for the first time without wasting the times and efforts of the whole team. Most importantly, if you partner with a reliable hospital billing company then their certified employees can ensure that your claims are not filed with out-to-date, mismatched, incorrect or missing codes. Because when these mistakes are identified by the clearinghouses then they deny such erroneous claims before they can become an issue for payers.

4. Promptly Follow-up on Denied or Rejected Claims

Before diving into details, let’s establish the difference between a rejected claim and a denied claim.

Rejected Claim: A rejected claim is one that hasn’t been processed yet due to the existence of one or more errors. It hinders the insurance company from paying the bills as it is written.

Denied Claim: A denied claim is a claim that the insurance company has processed and has considered unplayable due to the discovery of a violation of the payer- patient contract or due to the identification of vital errors caught after processing the claim.

In both of these scenarios, the payer will return the claim to the biller without paying any amount with an explanation of the problem. If you have the best hospital billing company on your side then you can rectify and resubmit your claims. But remember that a denied claim is appealed prior to resubmission. Consequently, it is a much more costly and time-consuming process.

Therefore, it is essential to check for errors in a claim to minimize the occurrence of rejections and denials. However, if such errors occur then make sure that they are handled as quickly as possible. Here comes the profitable aspect of a dedicated hospital billing company that consistently keeps in touch with the representatives of the payer.

Hence, they can help clarify problems with the original claims and provide information on current claims as they are processed. All of these endeavours would result in the expedition of the claim editing process, minimize appeals and resubmission times. Hence, it would save your practice sufficient time so you can invest your time and efforts in providing quality care services.

5. Improve Operational Capabilities

The healthcare field is constantly changing, therefore, hospitals should follow suits to maximize their efficiency and revenue. A hospital billing company can save your administration time by providing analytical reports and guidelines to comply with the latest healthcare regulations. Hence, medical staff at hospitals can identify key areas that are causing problems and demand new strategies to address those problems.

6. Partner with a Reliable Medical Billing Company

Medical practices must constantly deliver quality care services and comply with current trends in medicine and proper staff management. They must also stay current with the most recent rules about medical coding protocols, insurance companies and medical billing regulations. With so much depth to comply with, an already busy medical staff can slip through the cracks that can lead to rejections, denials, and underpayments that make medical practices to invest their important time and money in the administration procedures.

Along with their insider’s view or in-depth knowledge, a hospital billing company can implement billing procedures and use smart software solutions and equipment to help providers stand out. This can help you manage challenges that arise due to the costly time and labour involved in monitoring down debtors, submitting and editing claims. In this way, it’s an effective way to increase revenue and regain control over your hospital billing department.

Coronavirus Vaccine – Dr. Jeremy M. Levin

A story in USA Today this morning asks whether a coronavirus vaccine could repair the pharma industry’s reputation despite drug price increases. Dr. Jeremy M. Levin, an iconic biotech thought-leader who first introduced immuno oncology to the world 10 years ago, is quoted:

“The pandemic ‘has driven the public eye onto what the biotech industry does, which is change the dynamic of a disease,’ said Jeremy Levin, chairman of BIO and author of the recently published book Biotechnology in the Time of COVID-19: Commentaries from the Front Line. “In the noise that came from the bad actors, we basically lost sight of the essence of what the biotech is all about, which is patients and innovation.”

Here are some additional thoughts from Dr. Levin’s on developing a vaccine and the road forward:

What can you (and the biotech industry) tell the American people that they haven’t already heard? Unless we are able to get a handle on COVID-19, we as a society as a whole are at great risk. There has never been a greater risk from a transmissible disease to our nation, and the world at large.

There is incredible pressure to expedite a COVID-19 vaccine, even if it hasn’t been tested in the way it needs to be tested.

What are the risks/rewards? The risks of rushing a vaccine are  considerable, and the FDA will be acutely aware of this when making an approval. I expect there will be extraordinary diligence from the FDA, as well as from each company producing a vaccine. Despite this, the risk of not developing a vaccine are nearly unimaginable.

How long is the typical timeline for vaccine development? A typical timeline for vaccine development is at least a decade, but many variables go into this. This article in the NY Times is a useful explainer.

Dr. Levin is available for interviews on COVID-19 and other biotech topics. He is currently CEO and Chairman of OVID Therapeutics, Inc., and Chair of the global Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO). In 2018 Dr. Levin was named “one of the most influential figures in biopharmaceutical industry” by FierceBiotech, and one of the top three biotechnology CEOs in 2020 by The Healthcare Technology Report. Ricardo Zaldana Navy Illustration by Mina Tocalini

Navy SEAL Gear

Considered by many to be the most rigorous and highly trained military force in the world, Navy SEALs work in sometimes hopeless conditions to carry out special operations. This branch of the military was established by President John F. Kennedy to perform a variety of operations of unconventional warfare. Because of the nature of their work, Navy SEALs use only the best equipment to increase the chances of success and safe returns. Although some of this equipment is top-secret or restricted, many items that are regularly used by Navy SEALs are available to the general public.

Weapons

As a military branch, it’s natural that SEALs carry a variety of weapons. Missions can vary from quiet reconnaissance to explosive takeouts. Because of this, many styles of weapons might be in a SEAL arsenal. Common weapons include carbines or assault rifles, machine guns, concealable handguns, sniper rifles and even missile launchers. In most of the United States, this gear requires a permit to own and many deadly weapons are not available to the general public. One fun way to explore SEAL weaponry without the dangers is to purchase a plastic replica or even to build an accurate model.

Clothing

Clothing is an approachable way to explore Navy SEAL equipment since there aren’t restrictions and these items are less expensive than weapons, vehicles, or special gear. SEALs are equipped with some remarkably effective clothing, including pants and shirts made from durable materials with reinforced stitching. Even items such as socks and belts are specifically constructed for naval activities. If these basic items aren’t interesting enough, try out some tough all-weather military boots or specially-designed Luminox watches. Although some SEAL clothing is specialized for specific applications, much of it is qualified for sea, air and land. Some factors to consider for all these environments include waterproofing or water-resistance, durability through pressure and temperature differences, resistance to abrasion and dust and comfort despite any of these elements.

Vehicles

A collectors item only for the really dedicated, SEAL vehicles are among the most powerful and expensive. One famous item is the SEAL Delivery Vehicle, which is a small submarine that is designed to be as close to undetectable as possible. Some are large enough to hold up to six people, but some missions have been carried out by fewer personnel. Piloting a personal submarine isn’t a practical choice for most civilians, but replicas and models are fun ways to enjoy them anyway. However, a Humvee or desert vehicle might be a more practical collector’s item. These vehicles were designed to replace Jeeps and can be outfitted with a variety of essential equipment. For more fun, try out a Light Tactical All Terrain Vehicle, which can be as small as the average 4-wheeler or a bit larger to hold more people and equipment. Although expensive and not always practical, military vehicles are a great conversation piece.

Other Gear

Although SEAL stands for Sea, Air, Land, the successes of aquatic activities stand out as some of the more unbelievable tasks the SEALs have completed. To safely perform underwater missions, SEALs have to have the best in scuba, wetsuit and water-safe equipment to perform their jobs. SEALs rely on other items as well, though. According to one of the SEALs who participated on the raid that stopped Bin Laden, there are a number of items that SEALs carry with them almost everywhere, including water bottles, small point-and-shoot cameras, bolt cutters, tourniquets or first-aid supplies, helmets, night vision goggles, body armor, knives and multipurpose tools such as Swiss Army Knives. Although they come in handy for life-saving missions, most of these tools have everyday uses as well and are easy to obtain from stores. Even casual shops like My Gift Stop carry these kinds of useful items.

Whether you’re looking to outfit yourself in some of the most effective equipment in the world or you just want a few collector’s pieces, Navy SEAL gear is top of the line. Simple apparel items augment one’s closet with durable options, while equipment and home decor items are both interesting and educational.

Annalisa Parent – Writing Tips

How to finally write that book this summer, even if you haven’t written a word

By Annalisa Parent

Many would-be authors get overwhelmed by the size of a book-length project. Many of us find ourselves with additional free time on our hands this summer with fewer barbecues, farmers’ markets or fairs. How can you use this time to finally write your book? Here are some of my top tips from my writing coach archives.

Write down your end goal.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. We’ve heard this one a million times. But, look, if you don’t know what you want to accomplish, you’ll never get it done. As Lewis Carroll famously wrote, “If you don’t know where you are going, any road will get you there.”

Know what you want to accomplish.

If you’re like most writers, when you start to untangle this “what I want” knot, you’ll find it’s far more complicated than you first thought. For example, maybe your dream isn’t just a book, it’s a series, and movie rights, and a worldwide book tour. Those are all great ideas, but one step at a time. If you can hone in on the first step toward your dream, then you can break it down into actual action steps, moving it from nebulous dream to achievable goal.

Choose a deadline.

Choose a day that you are going to have this project done. This step cannot be overlooked, however, while deadlines are a huge motivator, here’s a pro tip: Post your deadline out on social media. Tell your friends, your parents, and especially someone who intimidates you just a little bit. Let these people hold you accountable and keep you motivated. Once you set that deadline for yourself, you’re going to work backward from that date to create your work plan. How much writing do you have to do each day to reach your goal, and how can you carve out the time to make it happen?

Remember that Creativity is Wonky.

Despite the best-laid plans of mice and men (Thank you, Steinbeck and Burns) to write 5,000 words a day or a chapter an hour, creativity is not always a linear process. You may want to finish that chapter today, but your book–and your brain– have other ideas. When our characters (or ideas) misbehave, they’re often right. You may feel like you want the piece to take a certain shape or go in a certain direction. The brain is sending us a caution flag, though. When your creativity takes the lead, following it always bears fruit. Really. I promise. Now, the piece you create today may not make the final cut for your book, but the information you garnered from the experience of following your creativity will always bring a benefit to the piece as a whole.

Find your best writer and be that writer

All kinds of would-be mentors want to tell you that you have to do it this way or that way in order to be a real writer. There are some rules, especially if you want to traditionally publish. That said, in the creative phase the most important consideration is finding your creative flow.

Write with a pencil or a tablet. Write outdoors or in your bed. Use an outline, or allow the natural flow of ideas. None of this fluff matters; here’s what does: Find the place where you can be at your creative best to get that draft out of you. After all, you can’t publish until you have a book. And you can’t have a book until you get it done.

The biggest key to success I have seen in writers who finish and publish well is that they find and embrace the writer they are, so they can write book after book with creative ease.

Show up every day like it’s your job.

My writing mentor Julia Alvarez, wasn’t the first one to say it, but she was the first one to say it to me: Being a writer is 90% applying butt to chair. Write at the beach. Write in a hammock. Write on your lunch break. Whatever you do, make writing a habit, and you’ll see the results. You don’t get a dream body by going to the gym once, or even once a week. The same is true of writing a book. Show up. Do the work. Even when it stings.

Remember that writing is art, and art takes time.

Many writers get lost in the rabbit hole: Why is it taking me so long to finish my manuscript? This trap turns into self doubt. “I must not be a good writer.” “I’m never going to get it done.” Believe me, I’ve heard it all, and I’ve seen self-doubt and fear stymy project after project. What if you reframe this fear? What if instead you say “Writing is art and art takes time.” Consider the Sistine Chapel, painted by Michelangelo. It took four and a half years for him to complete that masterpiece, which–frankly, if you’ve seen the level of detail–you know it’s astonishing he completed it so quickly. What else? The Washington Monument took thirty years to construct; thirty full years. Let’s think about more writing-related references. It took Victor Hugo twelve years to write Les Miserables and Harper Lee spent two and a half years writing To Kill a Mockingbird. Writing is art, and art takes time. Completing your manuscript is not going to happen overnight, not because there’s something wrong with you, but because you are an artist. Allow yourself to get into creative flow, and creativity will reward you with a cornucopia of ideas and finished pages. Promise. I’ve watched it with my own eyes hundreds of times.

Pace yourself.

Working with the creative process and the brain’s natural function means you must be really honest with yourself about how much you can get done. It’s very admirable and ambitious if you say you’re going to get everything done today, but you also might be setting yourself up for failure. When you set yourself up for failure, you’ll feel yucky about yourself. You don’t want to come back to the project feeling like you failed. So, make reasonable goals for yourself and pace your project in a reasonable way.

Follow these steps above and you will notice how much lighter it feels to write and finish your project.

Mindchatter on the inspiration behind the single: “Night Goggles is a metaphor for seeing the world through a completely different lens. At night, when I’m most creative, I sometimes recognize the transience of life and the triviality of my worries. It’s an incredibly liberating feeling and one that I hope many people experience – but it’s always fleeting, so I tried to bottle it up in a song.”

As one of the latest signees to Mind of a Genius, Mindchatter has swept the live electronic scene in just under a year. In 2019 he took his enthralling show on tour with Parisian electro duo Polo & Pan, performing across sold-out venues like NY’s Terminal 5, Boston’s Royale, and Philly’s Underground Arts. With a handful of singles, he’s earned over 4 million streams to date and found support in tastemakers like BBC Radio’s Pete Tong. A sought-after remixer, this summer he’s put his signature spin on major records like Channel Tres’ “Weedman” and AMTRAC’s “Stratego.”
