Joy Denalane hands clasped

Joy Denalane – I Believe

Today, the R&B songstress Joy Denalane drops her new single “I Believe (featuring BJ The Chicago Kid),” her first official release in the US off her upcoming album Let Yourself Be Loved. Listen here via Motown Records. Additionally, Joy will perform live tomorrow at 9AM ET / 12PM PT. Tune in here.

“”I Believe” is about being in that safe space where “you being you” is enough and where your loved ones see you for who you are,” says Joy on the meaning of the song.

On “I Believe,” Joy’s airy soul-soaked vocals soar as she sings about falling in love complemented by BJ The Chicago Kid’s wild adlibs and tonality creating a vivacious R&B banger. In unison they belt “For you I’d take a leap of faith cause I believe.” Aside from the duo’s vocal prowess, celebratory trumpets, a convivial choir, and the feeling of inspiration felt throughout the track add more flair.

Both artists are staples in the world of R&B. Joy is an international star on the rise hailing from Germany. She has worked with Raekwon, Lupe Fiasco, Bilal, Common, Hugh Masakela and more while BJ is a known collaborator to the likes of Stevie Wonder, Kendrick Lamar, and Anderson Paak.

Joy’s talent, emotional honesty, the culturally complex story of her life make her an incredibly versatile artist. Joy is the essence of the modern, global, Black woman. The daughter of a South African father and a German mother, she was born in the divided city of Berlin. Her access to African music and rhythms as well as her love of American soul music made her an enthusiastic follower and participant of the up-and-coming Hip-Hop movement, which found a home in the culturally diverse city of Berlin at an early age. At the same time, she was inspired by singers like Aretha Franklin, Letta M’Bulu and Mary J Blige, who gave her the energy and courage to combine all these musical backgrounds and create her own unique style.

Dr Drew Sinatra illustration by Mina Tocalini

Lyme Disease Misdiagnosis

The pandemic has created a hypervigilance on important flu-like markers such as sore throat, headaches, chills, fatigue and fever, the same symptoms that Dr. Drew Sinatra, a naturopathic doctor with Healthy Directions, says could be the first signs of Lyme disease.

“We are all spending a lot more time outdoors this summer to maintain social distancing recommendations with the goal to reduce our risk against the threat of COVID-19, which is important. Now we just need to be vigilant about another threat that thrives in wooded and grassy areas, known as the ‘great masquerader,’ or Lyme disease,” said Sinatra, a board-certified and California-licensed practicing naturopathic doctor who holds a doctorate in naturopathic medicine from Bastyr University, America’s top naturopathic and complementary medical school. “The symptoms of the flu and Lyme disease are very similar, however the biggest obstacle with Lyme disease is that more than 70% of diagnostic tests come back negative – even if someone is positive. So, unfortunately people often go untreated for years, until the Lyme disease symptoms become debilitating.”

The CDC estimates that more than 300,000 people are diagnosed with Lyme disease each year in the United States. Of these infections, an unknown number will result in a chronic, difficult-to-treat illness. Lyme disease affects all age groups, with particularly high occurrences among children, especially ages 5-14, and adults 45-64. Lyme disease is a bacterial disease that usually presents itself in its early stages with flu-like symptoms such as sore throat, headaches, chills, fatigue and fever. If it’s not caught and treated early, Lyme disease symptoms can progress to include muscle aches, cognitive dysfunction, neurological complaints, migratory joint pain and generalized chronic fatigue. In fact, Lyme disease can mimic more than 300 diseases. Patients can have symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS), or worse, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), but actually have Lyme disease.

“Our previous understanding was that Lyme disease was transmitted exclusively through tick bites. However, now we suspect that Lyme and other microorganisms can potentially be transmitted through sexual intercourse, breast milk, mosquito bites, fleabites and blood transfusions,” said Sinatra. “Lyme disease can even be transmitted to a fetus, although babies born with Lyme disease often don’t show symptoms until puberty, later in adulthood, or not at all.”

The more obvious sign of Lyme disease is a “bull’s eye” rash, with a red center surrounded with concentric rings. But Sinatra says this visible sign only develops if a person contracts Lyme disease through a tick bite, and unfortunately, it doesn’t develop with every tick bite. In fact, only 50% of patients with Lyme disease report a “bull’s eye” rash. To make matters worse, not all tick bites cause a “bull’s eye” rash, but present themselves with a red irritated rash, which is often misdiagnosed.

If you suspect that you have Lyme disease, Sinatra says to ask your doctor to conduct a blood enzyme immunoassay (EIA) or blood immunofluorescence assay (IFA). If either test comes back positive, your doctor can request a Western blot test, however the majority of these tests can produce a false negative even if Lyme disease is present. Sinatra says it’s very important to seek out a Lyme disease specialist who can quickly recognize Lyme disease symptoms. Lyme literate doctors are specialists in treating complex chronic disease. The International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society is a well-recognized organization that can help recommend a Lyme disease specialist in your area.

“You want a doctor who is going to combine the best of both conventional and alternative medicine,” said Sinatra. “Killing the microorganisms with pharmaceutical or herbal antibiotics is only one piece of the healing puzzle when it comes to Lyme disease treatment. Maximizing detoxification pathways and using targeted immune supportive therapies can help people recover faster. If you identify a tick attachment and develop a bull’s eye rash, then a 4-week course of antibiotics is generally enough to eliminate the infection. However, if you’ve been infected with Lyme disease for a long time, which is the case for the majority of Lyme disease patients, treatment can take anywhere from 6 months to 2 years, and sometimes for longer. Some patients, however, begin to feel better immediately after beginning treatment.”

Andres Guardado Illustration by Mina Tocalini

Andres Guardado Killed by LASD

By Eamonn Burke

18 year old Andres Guardado was killed by a deputy of the Los Angeles County Sheriff on June 18. Guardado was spotted by a Sheriff in front of a business with a gun in his pants on the night of his death, and allegedly pulled the handgun on police when they investigated, and resisted commands. He then ran, and a chase ensued, which ended in 6 rounds being shot at the teen and him being provinces dead at the scene.

“I don’t know — it’s still not real. I close my eyes and I hope and I pray that it’s not really happening,” said Guardado’s cousin Celina Abarca as she teared up.

It is known that Guardado was a security guard, but at the time he was not wearing a uniform or safety equipment, and he was not yet 21, the age at which a security guard can be armed in Los Angeles. So far no video evidence has surfaced, but authorities have been looking for footage. According to Sheriff Alex Villanueva, this should be yet another reason for body cameras, which the department does not currently have.

The sheriff’s department has not been cooperative in the aftermath. Their “security hold” on Guardado’s autopsy has moved the family to seek an independent one, saying that there was a lack of transparency between the two parties. Miguel Vega, Guardado’s murderer, has still not spoken to investigators. However, an attorney representing the other sheriff involved, has spoken, saying the encounter was “a justified shooting at the wrong time” and that the Sheriff’s department is “very sorry for the loss of life, sorry for the (Guardado) family.”

Protests demanding justice for Guardado have added to the nationwide reckoning against police brutality, specifically against people of color.

DYU S2 illustration by Mina Tocalini

DYU S2 E-Bike

Good news to DYU fans, the upgraded DYU S2 is coming soon. DYU S1 is famous for its beautiful appearance &15kg lightweight that can be lifted up by an arm easily. And DYU S2 electric bike continues the style of S1 meanwhile making it more powerful.

So what are the advantages of DYU S2? First, DYU S2 comes with a powerful 10AH large capacity + 18650 lithium battery, it ensures a 40 km mileage. Second, the high-speed brushless motor is upgraded to 350W from 250W. Third, APP free just like cars. Use a remote key to start, stop, or lock the bike conveniently. Moreover, it comes with adjustable seats for different height, built-in suspension system for comfortable riding experience, front and rear dual disc brakes for safe travel, LED headlights and brake tail lights for reassuring riding at night. In conclusion, DYU S2 will be a perfect travel tool for your daily life.

Maintenance tips to charge your DYU electric bike the right way in summer. Do not expose batteries to the sunshine If the battery is charged in the sun, the high temperature and the temperature rise during charging will cause the surface temperature of the battery to be very high, and the battery protective case may be hot, which may cause battery damage. Therefore, when we charge electric bikes, we must put them in a cool, ventilated place to prevent high-temperature environments. Avoid hidden dangers In the summer, many folks choose to charge the e-bike the whole night for convenience, which is very dangerous. Because the temperature in summer is relatively high, the temperature of the electric bike will increase during charging, and this charging time is too long, which will damage the battery and may affect the life of the battery.

The correct approach is: Regardless of whether the charger is turned on or off, the charging time is controlled within 8 hours. Use the original charger because different types of batteries match different chargers. Mixed use in summer can easily cause a short circuit or insufficient charging, thereby damaging battery life and affecting travel. Therefore, the correct choice is to use the original charger, which extends the battery life while safely charging.

Turbo – Music Video Release

TURBO RELEASES MUSIC VIDEO FOR SOPHOMORE SINGLE “RACING AFTER ME”

Calgary-born artist Turbo has released the music video for his sophomore single “Racing After Me” today via 10K Projects/ Homemade Projects/ Internet Money. The single has already been featured on Spotify’s New Music Friday, PopCo, In My Feelings, and Young Music City playlists and arrives on the heels of his debut release “Heart Stop.” The music video shows Turbo rebellious and confident, racing cars, smoking cigarettes, and singing about how his life has changed since signing a record deal.

WATCH THE MUSIC VIDEO HERE

Born Nicholas LaMonaca, Turbo grew up on country thanks mainly to his
father (a famed guitarist in the international bluegrass scene), but felt drawn toward rap music and obscure electronic genres like hardstyle, the fusion of techno and hardcore. At the age of 12 he started making his own music, a move heavily inspired by Avicii’s progressive-house classic “LE7ELS.”

“Once I heard that song I couldn’t get enough of it,” Turbo recalls. “I was so obsessed, I ended up downloading FL Studio to try to recreate the melody on my own.”

Although he instantly discovered a natural talent for production, Turbo put music aside for several years, until he graduated high school. “On my 18th birthday I bought a laptop, keyboard, and set of speakers, and figured I’d have rappers come in and do their thing,” he says. “But after a while I just started winging it, making beats and rapping over them myself.”

As he pushed deeper into his artistry, Turbo began mining inspiration from left-of-center country singers like Colter Wall, a Canadian musician he stumbled across while stocking the shelves at his full-time liquor-store job. “Colter Wall has one of the raspiest, rawest, rudest voices I’d ever heard in my life, and it just completely took me over,” he notes.

From there, Turbo tapped into his own country roots and created a full-length project titled Sixth Gear, a 2019 release featuring his breakthrough single “Light Speed.” Soon after YouTube curator Astari shared the song’s video on his channel, “Light Speed” caught the attention of 10K, quickly paving the way for Turbo’s signing to the label, along with Homemade Projects and Internet Money Records.

In the making of his 10K / Homemade Projects / Internet Money debut, “Heart Stop,” Turbo embraced even more confidence in his songwriting, and followed his intuition more fully than ever.

“The more music I make and the better I know myself, the more I’ve realized that the best songs come from me sitting in a room alone and just taking my time—that’s how I come up with something honest and timeless,” he says. “I don’t really follow a particular process. Instead of worrying about any kind of rules, I just do what I want, and go with whatever feels right to me.”
