2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee

Members of the 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee Announced

Scientific Experts Will Review Scientific Evidence on Key Nutrition Topics To Inform Development of New Guidelines

To ensure America’s dietary guidance reflects the latest science, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue and U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Alex Azar today announced the appointment of 20 nationally recognized scientists to serve on the 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee. The independent advisory committee will review scientific evidence on topics and questions identified by the departments and will provide a report on their findings to the secretaries. Their review, along with public and agency comments, will help inform USDA and HHS’ development of the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGAs).

“USDA is committed to ensuring everything we do is data-driven and based in scientific facts, which is why this expert committee’s work in objectively evaluating the science is of the utmost importance to the departments and to this process,” said Secretary Perdue. “The committee will evaluate existing research and develop a report objectively, with an open mind.”

“The scientists we selected to serve on the committee are national leaders in the areas of nutrition and health,” said HHS Secretary Alex Azar. “HHS, USDA, and all Americans will benefit from the collective experience and expertise of the committee, which will conduct a rigorous examination of the scientific evidence on several diet-related health outcomes, including the prevention of cancer, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, which are three of the leading causes of death in the United States.”

The list of members appointed to the expert committee can be found here.

The committee’s work will kick off at a public meeting to be announced in the coming weeks. The committee will review scientific evidence on specific nutrition and health related topics and scientific questions that, for the first time, reflect both public comments and federal agency input. Throughout their deliberations, the public and other stakeholders will be encouraged to provide comments and feedback.

“In our continuing commitment to transparency and customer service, we invite the American public to engage in this process,” said Secretary Perdue. “We want to hear from everyone and all viewpoints. I encourage everyone with an interest to attend public meetings and to send comments through the Federal Register once the committee begins their work.”

The next edition of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans will continue to focus on dietary patterns of what Americans eat and drink as a whole, on average and over time, to help prevent disease and keep people healthy. Additionally, the review process will take a life-stage approach and will, for the first time, include pregnant women and children from birth to 24 months as mandated by the 2014 Farm Bill.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans are updated every five years and serve as the cornerstone of federal nutrition programs and policies, providing food-based recommendations to help prevent diet-related chronic diseases and promote overall health.

USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) works to reduce food insecurity and promote nutritious diets among the American people. The agency administers 15 nutrition assistance programs that leverage America’s agricultural abundance to ensure children and low-income individuals and families have nutritious food to eat. FNS also co-develops the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which provides science-based nutrition recommendations and serves as the cornerstone of federal nutrition policy. For information and links, go to DietaryGuidelines.gov.

The HHS Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP) provides leadership for disease prevention and health promotion initiatives on behalf of the HHS Secretary and as part of the HHS Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health. ODPHP co-develops the Dietary Guidelines for Americans with USDA and leads the development of Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. ODPHP also leads the Healthy People initiative, which sets evidence-based, 10-year national goals and objectives for improving the health of all Americans.

St. Maarten Heineken Regatta

Grand Opening of Regatta Village marks start of the countdown to 39th St. Maarten Heineken Regatta

Boats are arriving, teams gathering, serious sailing and race tactics discussed and evening plans for serious fun prepared as the countdown to the start of the 39th St. Maarten Heineken Regatta continues with the Grand Opening of the Regatta Village.

Organisers, volunteers, local residents and competitors gathered to witness Race Director Paul Miller formally launch this year’s event, slicing the cork off a bottle of champagne in flamboyant style.  Robbie Ferron, one of the founders of the Regatta and a former Commodore of St. Maarten Yacht Club said this year’s event “welcomed in a new era.” He was joined by another former Commodore, Ian Hope Ross, who said, “This year is a highlight for next year’s 40th, and we welcome old friends and new.”

A key event on the Caribbean race schedule, the regatta attracts some of the world’s elite sailors and crews, with fast and furious racing in monohulls, maxis and multihulls with six races held over four days.  For those looking for a more relaxed experience, the “Island Time Class” designed for cruisers, offers one race a day, ensuring all the fun of the regatta, without the stress!

Part of the attraction of this regatta is in its variety, both in size of boat, origin and aspirations.  Some of the world’s most elite performance race boats, such as Polish-entered Varsovie, a Swan 100S will be racing head to head against Umiko.  This stunning Nautor Swan Frers 80 is skippered by yacht broker Bill Titus with a crew that collectively have raced in 150 St. Maarten Heineken Regattas, but this is the first time on Umiko.   Bill comments, “I first raced in St. Maarten in 1993. The balance of serious sailing, warm waters and lifestyle draws me back and it is great to see the regatta still appealing to professional and amateur sailors from across the world. It’s about having fun together as a team out on the water in a beautiful yacht.”

Some of the tightest and most competitive racing, says Race Director Paul Miller, will be in the CSA 3 (Performance 40) group with 11 entries; meanwhile the five boats from Poland, including Sailing Poland, the Volvo Ocean 65 formerly known as MAPFRE, will be head to head against I love Poland, a Volvo Open 70.  Both these boats demonstrate Poland’s commitment to developing young and promising sailors from Olympic classes into a regular professional Sailing Poland Race Team. “To acquire this boat [Sailing Poland] was a step forward in our mission to become one of the largest sailing organisations in Poland,” said Piotr Zygo, Sailing Poland’s CEO.

At the other end of the scale, the St Maarten Heineken Regatta attracts families and cruising sailors, some of whom are en route to other destinations.  Dobro Dani, an Elan 434 owned by Jason and Roberta Bowman, are exactly halfway in their journey from Croatia to Vancouver. “We are really looking forward to the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta, and excited to be racing our boat in the Caribbean,” said Jason.  “We’re looking forward to tradewind round the can sailing and have heard rave reviews of the nightly parties and entertainment.”

On shore, the legendary parties at the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta continue to excel this year with festivities continuing long into the night.   The Grand Opening saw live music from Remo and the Barbwire Band, with acts during the week including “Queen of Soca” Alison Hinds, Shermanology, Fatman Scoop with the highlight at the final night being The Jacksons, live on stage.

As skipper Trevor Middleton from UK-based Sun Fast 3600 Black Sheep said, “We have never done the regatta before, but the reputation precedes it.  It sounds like a good mix of sailing, drinking and parties, what is not to like about that?”

Tickets for the regatta parties can be purchased from the St. Maarten Yacht Club.

4 Fulfillment Details to Look for in 2019

If there’s one shining light guiding e-retailers in an industry both fueled and marred by the details, it’s to focus on the customer experience. Though everything technically affects the customer experience to some degree, nothing plays a central role in satisfying customers more than the fulfillment process.

So it makes sense that these four fulfillment details to look for in 2019 all directly enhance customer satisfaction and shopping convenience.

Let’s learn more about what’s in store for this year and beyond.

Heavy Investments in AI and Automation

It’s clear that fast and affordable shipping is the new standard in fulfillment. But for retailers to meet these standards they’ll have to achieve automation at scale — things like robot-operated warehouses, self-driving trucks, and drones. JD.com is one company after Amazon that’s investing heavily in these areas. The Chinese retailer’s already operating humanless warehouses of the future, and completed their first government-approved drone delivery in Indonesia in early January.

Meanwhile, DHL is investing $300 million to quadruple robots in their warehouses this year, and Uniqlo announced in late 2018 that they were investing over $770 million in automating its warehouse and distribution system. Top titans like Amazon, Walmart, Zappos, UPS, and FedEx already operate automated warehouses, but as long as the automation race is ongoing, so too will these companies’ developments.

Lenient Return Processes

Brands like Ikea, Amazon, Target, Walmart, Costco, Zappos and Nordstrom all have success in common, but they also have customer-friendly — some would say exceedingly lenient — return policies. These two things aren’t mutually exclusive.

Reverse logistics is an absolute mess for the typical online business — eating into profits and making operating margins hard to assess. Look for companies to develop better systems to facilitate returns, process returned products and improve their quality of shipping to reduce the number of defective goods. This will coincide with brands adopting more lenient returns policies, as well as leading with them in their promotional tactic. After all, this is a great way to acquire new customers, curb cart abandonment rates and increase average order value. Of course, brands will need to take measures to address fraud and/or abuse as they change their terms and conditions.

Subscription-Based Ordering for Everyday Products

Regardless of how material we are, we all use and need certain products on a daily basis. The thought of not having any toothpaste left before going to sleep, running out of toilet paper at the wrong time, or not have any groceries in the house when you want to prepare a meal is certainly offputting. This is why the subscription e-commerce market has grown by more than 100 percent per year over the past five years.

While subscription e-commerce is nothing new (we all remember Dollar Shave Club’s viral takeoff), we’ve seen other gems like Blue Apron and Birchbox come about in recent years. We’ll continue to see more of these subscription-based models, as well recurring order options and monthly boxes for everyday items offered by stores ranging from those that sell beauty products from home to big-name brands. Consumers, always looking for more convenience and less ‘one-off’ errands will respond positively.

Checkout-Free Retail

While automation at scale will need to occur to power what’s growing steadily into a $5 trillion global market, it’s unlikely some customers will ever be satisfied with delivery timeframes. Further, complications like package theft and damage in transit aren’t going away overnight. This sets the table for a lot more check-out free retail stores. Amazon Go’s experiment appears to be successful, with allegedly thousands more to come.

As Forbes notes, plenty of other retailers are getting involved as well — this includes GoodHousekeeping Lab via their Mall of America pop-up shop, Alibaba’s supermarket chain Hema, as well as Bingobox and AVA Retail. Meanwhile companies like Zippin, Standard Cognition and Trigo are providing the solutions to accomplish this.

Checkout-free stores will be the ultimate commercial win-win. Retailers deal with less payroll, less inventory, and less theft, while consumers get unobstructed convenience in their shopping experiences.

And, while the first examples we’re seeing are on a small, convenience-type level, in-person transactions of all sorts will shift accordingly—creating the need for micro-warehouses (think Ikea) that can serve both front and back-end operations.

Don’t expect all these details to bleed into every consumer experience shortly, but this year will mark a pivotal wave of progress for each of these areas.

New Release by Gabi Demartino

From recently making headlines by appearing in Ariana Grande’s viral “Thank U, Next” video to being a bonafide influencer with over 13.2M combined followers, Gabi Demartino will release her most personal song yet in time for Valentine’s Day. Her new single  Cold Room releasing February 14th, 2019, will allow her massive fan base to see her in a completely different light.

Gabi Speaking About the Meaning of “Cold Room”

“Cold Room” is a song I wrote 3 years ago while I was forming unfamiliar feelings for a friend. I knew it was more than a friend but never wanted to confront the situation because I was afraid the feelings weren’t mutual. I  never wanted to cross the line and ruin the friendship. I decided to release this song now, because it came on shuffle in my car while driving through a blizzard on the east coast. It is the most relatable, confident, upbeat love ballad that I have ever written and thought maybe it could help a few relationships blossom this Valentine’s Day. I want this track to help people in similar situations. Hopefully this song can send shivers down some spines and chill some veins. Pun- intended!

Green Dentistry

5 Reasons Green Dentistry Is Gaining Popularity

For a growing number of patients, a trip to the dentist isn’t what it used to be – and that’s how they want it.

Rather than just a routine “drill-and-fill” for a cavity, they may receive a head massage,  meditative advice and diet suggestions that would seem more befitting a gastroenterologist. What they won’t receive are traditional amalgam fillings – about 50 percent of which are composed of mercury, which has been associated with numerous health issues and is considered an environmental hazard.

This emerging branch of dentistry – which dental professionals say is largely patient-driven – is called “holistic” or “holistic biological.” Holistic dentists believe that poor oral health leads to poor physical health. They perform traditional procedures but consider the whole body – diet, lifestyle, emotional health – when treating teeth. They also focus on using what they consider to be safer materials.

“It’s the opposite of common dental culture, which is simply ‘drill and fill,’ ” says Dr. Nammy Patel, DDS, author of Age With Style: Your Guide To A Youthful Smile & Healthy Living. “Holistic dentistry is looking at and addressing the underlying causes for gum disease and cavities; for example, is it your diet, hormonal changes, or acid reflux?

“For many years in the dental profession, it was assumed that your oral health had only a tangential effect on your overall health. We now know better.”

Dr. Patel provides five reasons holistic dentistry is trending up as a treatment approach by patients:

  • Focus on the whole body and root cause. Holistic dentistry looks beyond symptoms to find root causes for dental issues while expanding methods of preventive care. “It’s a deeper look at a patient that offers them numerous benefits when considering diet and lifestyle and how it all connects with oral health,” Dr. Patel says.
  • Minimally-invasive treatments. “The focus is on helping patients avoid unnecessary, painful and drawn-out procedures that can hurt overall well-being,” Dr. Patel says. “That doesn’t mean sacrificing high-tech treatments for disease. Laser treatments for gum disease and cleaning are one example of minimally-invasive. The latter does a great job of destroying bacteria that are the biggest danger to your oral health. Air abrasion and ozone therapy are effective other effective minimally-invasive procedures.
  • Biocompatible and non-toxic materials. Holistic dentists will remove amalgam (mercury) fillings and favor dental appliances made from more natural substances. “A traditional approach to dentistry often uses mercury fillings or crowns and other harmful materials when treating dental issues,” Dr. Patel says. “Research has shown all kinds of health problems related to mercury, from thyroid issues to Alzheimer’s. Holistic dentistry will use non-toxic resins and materials fully compatible with the body.”
  • Alternatives to root canals. Dr. Patel says holistic dentists are more likely to look at alternatives, such as herbs, laser therapy, or extractions. A key reason: “Research shows unless root canals are completely sterilized and cleaned of all bacteria, the bacteria can get in the bloodstream can cause chronic health complications,” Dr. Patel says.
  • Balances cosmetics and function. “Missing, damaged, or crooked teeth can make you feel self-conscious and affect your quality of life,” Dr. Patel notes. “Holistic care takes a balanced approach to both form and function when developing a dental care plan. For example, if you’re worried about stained teeth, they’ll guide you first to healthy foods that alleviate the problem.”

“Holistic dentistry is committed to making sure you’re comfortable, making your teeth last a lifetime, and using the most natural materials available,” Dr. Patel says.

To bring the collection’s vibrant Miami inspirations to life, the space was infused with bright, colorful moments to also reflect his mantra for the the capsule, “nice energy, nice vibras, just smile and that’s what we need, all love.”

Guests enjoyed upbeat party vibes as they were able to dance, visit a custom snow cone station or play ice hockey and basketball shot ball while sipping signature Buchanan’s whisky cocktails. Holiday Destinations of Influential Women

8 Dream Holiday Destinations of Influential Women

Everybody needs to get away from time to time. And the rich and powerful are no exception! In fact, the stress and responsibility of holding an influential position and being constantly in the public eye can make the idea of a holiday even more appealing.

MyLateDeals has researched where the world’s most powerful women choose to go when they finally get a chance to let off some steam.

Queen Elizabeth II

You might think being the longest-reigning Queen of England would be an easy ride. But while Her Majesty may not have to worry about paying the bills each month, she has dealt admirably with personal trauma and national crises over the past seven decades – and remained adored by the national and international public the whole time.

Of course, no British royal is short of a holiday home or two. For Queen Elizabeth, 50,000 acres of moors, forests, and farmland at Balmoral Castle in Scotland provide both privacy and fresh air away from London life.

“I think Granny is the most happy there,” revealed Princess Eugenie a few years back. “I think she really, really loves the Highlands.”

Madonna

The Queen of Pop is the best selling female recording artist of all time and her influence on today’s music culture is inestimable. But rising to the top of the industry wasn’t easy – especially in the sexist atmosphere of the 1980s: “I’m tough, I’m ambitious and I know exactly what I want,” explains Madge. “If that makes me a bitch, okay.”

Madonna may be the archetypal urban woman, but when it’s time to get away nothing less than paradise will do. Soneva Fushi, an idyllic island in the Maldives, is the artist’s “definition of heaven – [a place for] riding bikes in the moonlight and watching movies under a starlit sky.”

With visitors able to reserve their own stretch of sun-baked sand far from the 24-hour news cycle, Soneva Fushi is a place where Madonna needn’t worry about reading, or becoming, hot gossip.

Oprah Winfrey

Talk show host, motivational speaker, philanthropist… president? Such are Oprah Winfrey’s levels of empathy and talent, it’s impossible to rule out quite what she’ll do next. And that’s just what you see on the surface: Winfrey’s business acumen is so sharp that they even teach college courses about it.

Like the Queen of England, Winfrey has an impressive property portfolio and holiday homes to spare. Her first choice destination is her ranch on Maui, Hawaii, where landscape and spirituality walk hand-in-hand: “The real substance and value of being in Hawaii is the unspoken “spirit” of the people and the surroundings,” she writes. “Hawaiians understand that the soul of the land is what matters.”

And what does a talk show host talk about on her time off? “We chat, laugh and rate the sunsets according to their magnificence.”

Pink

While her closest competitors embraced the hyper-sexualisation of early-noughties pop culture, Pink showed the world that it’s possible to stay true to who you are and still make a success of yourself. She has been a true ‘mainstream alternative’ in an age of mass production.

The singer and songwriter finds escape through a vastly different culture: that of the Indonesian island of Bali. She relaxes and has fun with her kids by attending cooking classes, chilling on the beach, and taking in traditional dance and music shows.

“Thank you to the people and the ocean and the energy of Bali,” Pink effuses on Instagram. “We love you.”

Beyoncé

They say the way to Carnegie hall is practice. For Beyoncé, building the stamina to blast stadium audiences with her formidable voice was apparently a matter of running around the block singing at the top of her voice by way of ‘working out’ in her youth. Her talent and hard work have won her 22 Grammy awards and a unique position in 21st-century western culture.

It’s Europe for Beyoncé and hubby Jay-Z when they want a break from the intensity of American living. The French Riviera (including Monaco, Cannes, and St. Tropez) may not be as remote as Bali or Soneva Fushi, but combining the deluxe privacy of a mega-yacht with the bustle and glamour of dining out along the Côte d’Azur seems to do it for the Knowleses.

Meghan Markle

Markle has brought a touch of reality to the royal family, and is becoming an important ambassador not just in diplomatic circles but between everyday people and the British elite. But even before she wooed Prince Harry, sixth in line to the throne, Markle was celebrated both for her acting and for her political activism.

So it’s no wonder her downtime with Harry is often spent in Africa, the continent where the couple pursue a great deal of charitable work. They keep things relatively real at the £580/night Mapula Lodge in Okavango Delta, Botswana, where thatched huts and outdoor showers overlook a stunning lagoon.

“I managed to persuade her to come and join me in Botswana,” said Harry of one of their early ‘dates.’ “We camped out with each other under the stars.”

Michelle Obama

‘First Lady’ was never a title that Michelle Obama was going to accept lightly. The Princeton and Harvard graduate worked as a lawyer and in prominent government positions before cutting back to raise her daughters and become an ambassador for human dignity and justice alongside her husband.

Obama’s holiday plans are as unpretentious as you would expect. Every year, she and her family arrive on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, where the Obamas cycle, play tennis, eat ice-cream, and spend quality time with their dogs, Sunny and Bo.

It’s more about wholesomeness than glamour – but you can be sure Obama returns to her daily routine refreshed and inspired.

Serena Williams

Some say Williams is the greatest female tennis player of all time. But the consensus errs towards her in fact being the greatest athlete of all time, regardless of gender. An astonishing 23 Grand Slam titles – including winning the Australian Open while two months pregnant – would be inspirational enough even if you didn’t consider the extent to which she’s set herself ahead of her rivals and the adversity she’s overcome to get there.

Romantic Rome is Williams’ destination of choice. She met her husband there while breakfasting with friends at the Cavalieri Hotel in 2015; he proposed to her on the same spot a year later.

As she told Traveller: “Rome is one of my favourite cities in the world! It’s such a magical place and I have so many wonderful memories there.”

An insane journey brought New York-born and Los Angeles-based Albanian-American singer, songwriter, and producer Stanaj to the doorstep of superstardom. His first smash came in the form of “Romantic” (NOTD Remix), which racked up nearly 120 million Spotify streams and counting to date. Stanaj’s first two EPs—The Preview and From a Distance—hit the Top 10 of the iTunes Top Pop Albums Chart. He received the sought-after social media endorsement of Kim Kardashian West, NBA star Brandon Jennings, Drake, and Chris Brown. He canvassed the globe on tour alongside JoJo and Jessie J and shared the stage with other superstars like Dua Lipa.

Not to mention, he made his late-night television debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and the night’s guest Justin Timberlake gave a coveted co-sign. 2018 saw him drop the slick and seductive “Dirty Mind” [feat. Ty Dolla $ign] and lend his voice to Gryffin’s “You Remind Me, which he performed on Jimmy Kimmel LIVE! In the summertime, he hit the studio with the likes of Tommy Brown [Ariana Grande] and d.a. doman [Kodak Black, Chris Brown, Tyga] and ultimately honed his signature style as evidenced by the slick and show-stopping “Sweat.
