Guinness 200th Anniversary × NYC

CHEERS TO TWO HUNDRED YEARS: THE STORY OF GUINNESS IN AMERICA

Iconic Irish Brewer to Release Limited Time Brew for the U.S. and Host Celebrations On Its East and West Coasts for 200th Anniversary

The story begins on October 16th, 1817 with a single line in a brewer’s log. The handwritten note reveals the first eight barrels of Guinness beer – a porter to be exact – meant for America would make their arrival in South Carolina. Ever since then, the bond between America and Ireland has continued to grow, from Irish immigrants searching for a better life to  community leaders to, of course, Guinness and the countless pints – shared responsibly – with the people of the United States.

The anniversary this fall is a celebration of a 200-year love affair between a brewery and a people: Guinness and America. There’s no better time than now for the Guinness brand to say thank you to America by introducing the limited-edition Guinness 200th Anniversary Export Stout; bringing back a few favorite stout releases for a festive variety pack; and hosting a pair of public events in New York City and Los Angeles.

“Two things have always been at the heart of the Guinness brand since our founding in 1759: brewing great beer and sharing our story,” said Emma Giles, Guinness Brand Director. “When we started brewingbeer for America 200 years ago, that story became a shared one. Now, every time you share a pint with someone else, another chapter begins.”

Guinness 200th Anniversary Export Stout is the latest beer created by the Open Gate Brewery – the pilot brewery located at St. James’s Gate in Dublin – where Guinness brewers experiment with new styles and reinterpret historical brews. Inspired by a recipe Benjamin Guinness – the son of Arthur Guinness – originally developed in 1817, this beer is brewed with Black Patent Malt and Golding Hops and has a 6% ABV.

“We took a look at that export stout’s recipe from 1817 in our brewing records and used that as our inspiration here, but it’s not just an homage to who we were as brewers then or who America was as a country,” said Peter Simpson, Head Brewer at the Open Gate Brewery in Dublin. “We’re also using this beer as a way to show how much we’re looking forward to the next 200 years. We knew it had to be special, and we really think this throwback recipe captures exactly what we wanted from 1817 all the
way through 2017.”

This October, Guinness will also release its newest limited-edition Guinness Draught cans, featuring artwork from the legendary Guinness ads from the 1930s and the 1950s that featured various zoo animals. Previous limited edition cans have featured the much-loved Guinness toucan and tortoise, among other works.

The 200 Years of Stout in America Mixed Pack – also on its way from Guinness – will bring back a few favorite stout recipes to add to the festivities. The full list of celebratory releases includes:

  • Guinness 200th Anniversary Export Stout – A deep, dark, authentic export stout with smooth,
rich flavor; brewed with Black Patent Malt. (MSRP: $8.99, 6-pack)
  • Guinness Limited-Edition Mount Rushmore Cans – Classic Guinness Draught stout in limited- edition cans depicting everyone’s favorite toucans flying across the iconic American monument
of Mount Rushmore from a rarely seen Guinness ad from the 1950s. (MSRP: $8.99, 8-pack)
  • Guinness 200 Years of Stout in America Mixed Pack – A collection of brews in honor of America’s love of stouts – Guinness Original, 200th Anniversary Export Stout, Antwerpen Stout
and Foreign Extra Stout – all of which have been exported to the U.S. over the past 200 years. (MSRP: $21.99, 12-pack)

Along with Guinness 200th Anniversary Export Stout, these brews will be available in stores nationwide, as well as at 200th anniversary celebrations held in New York and Los Angeles this October. Guinness fans of legal drinking age in New York can sign up to attend here: Guinness Open Gate Public House

While the past 200 years are the reason for celebration, the next 200 years have even more possibility. The newest chapter in this Irish-American story will be set in Maryland, where the first Guinness brewery on U.S. soil in more than 60 years will open in 2018. The brewery’s name, the Open Gate Brewery & Barrel House, is a combination of the pilot brewery at St. James’s Gate and a nod to the plan for this new brewery to be a center for barrel-aging beer. The new home for Guinness in the U.S. will also be the permanent brewing site for Guinness Blonde American Lager and other new beers created
specifically for the states.

Whether you’re celebrating the 200th anniversary of Guinness in the U.S. or toasting to the next 200 years, please remember to drink responsibly.

Karlsruhe

The winter fairy tale of Karlsruhe

Karlsruhe’s Christmas market immerses visitors in a winter wonderland

When Santa Claus flies above the cozy gabled houses and the crowded streets on his reindeer-drawn sleigh, you know that it is Christmas time in Karlsruhe! Karlsruhe’s “Christkindlesmarkt” invites visitors to step into a winter fairy tale from November 28 to December 23, 2017. But isn’t this just another German Christmas market? Not at all! The fan-shaped city enchants its visitors with a mix of sparkling winter wonderland, German “Gemütlichkeit” and an extraordinary program.

Mulled wine, roasted almonds and Christmas cookies are just the beginning of any visit to Karlsruhe’s Christmas market. Talking fairy-tale houses and a train ride through a magical forest will bring a glint of excitement to children’s eyes. An imposing pyramid of lights illuminates the Marktplatz (market square). Decorated stalls invite visitors to indulge in regional delicacies such as dumplings with sauerkraut. The “Glühweinwäldchen” (mulled wine copse) seduces visitors’ taste buds with its Christmas treats.

Are you dreaming of more than just a cozy “Waldweihnacht” (woodland Christmas)? How about a romantic horse-carriage ride to the ice rink directly in front of the illuminated baroque castle of Karlsruhe? Thomas Jefferson had already acknowledged the enchanting effect of Karlsruhe’s castle and its fan-shaped street layout by basing his design of Washington, D.C. on it. Nowadays, visitors to the Christmas market can skate on the second largest open-air ice rink in Germany, which includes a special beginners’ area, a curling sheet and a circular path beneath the illuminated trees. And the cozy “Eiszeit-Stube” (ice lounge) lets you enjoy good food surrounded by thousands of lights.

Those interested in a cultural program should take their time at the Staatliche Kunsthalle (The State Art Gallery). “Cézanne – Metamorphoses”, the exhibition featuring French art, takes a fresh look at Cézanne’s bright landscapes, bathers, portraits and still-life paintings. Apart from admiring great art, visitors can also buy exquisite modern and traditional artisan craftwork at the beautifully decorated stalls in the city center.

Only a few minutes away from Karlsruhe, fans of the medieval period will find the perfect place: the historic Christmas market just outside Karlsburg Castle bathed in the soft glow of candlelight and the warmth of bonfires presents a truly historical atmosphere with its artists, musicians, craftsmen and storytellers. A medieval camp, a fire show and swordplay top off the entertainment program. Visitors are also invited to join in the spectacle: shooting crossbow bolts or riding an ancient carousel.

About Karlsruhe:

Karlsruhe, formerly the capital of Baden, lies in southwest Germany, on the western flank of Baden-Württemberg. Situated adjacent to the mighty river Rhine, the city is close to the border with France. The climate is very pleasant – its location on the Rhine Plain makes Karlsruhe one of the sunniest and warmest cities in Germany. Founded by Margrave Charles William nearly 300 years ago, the city’s plan resembles that of Paris, with streets laid out in rays, like the ribs of a fan, radiating from a central point that is the margrave’s palace. The renowned 18th century city planner L’Enfant liked Karlsruhe’s design so much that he incorporated its elements into his plans for Washington, D.C.

Cut Copy x “Standing in the Middle of the Field”

“On ‘Standing in the Middle of the Field,’ the quartet’s vibrant synthesizer antics are at their most fine-tuned…a spirited bop with some sly pensive tension at its core…” – Pitchfork

“Cut Copy masterfully blends electronic music with indie rock music” – Dancing Astronaut

Cut Copy has just released the official video for”Standing in the Middle of the Field”, the latest single off their album Haiku from Zero. The uplifting visual was directed by filmmaker/new media artist Vincenzi Vandella, who was born in Russia but is now based in Australia. “Vincent is an old friend of the band,” says Dan Whitford, the lead singer of Cut Copy. “He came to us earlier this year because he’d been experimenting with a strange visual effect having a camera rise upward through various difference scenes and landscapes, almost like delving through a collection of memories. He suggested this experiment might work well when put to our music.”

“The initial concept was to create a video that was uplifting, in a literal sense,” Vandella explains, “We wanted the camera to rise up through various different scenes, telling the story of a couple in one long continuous shot.”

“Standing in the Middle of the Field” has been remixed by Australian duo Ara Koufax and  acclaimed Munich-based DJ/producer Ferdinand Weber. The remixes can be listen to HERE.

Haiku From Zero – Cut Copy’s first proper studio album in nearly four years and first for Astralwerks – was produced by Ben Allen. It is the follow-up to 2013’s Free Your Mind. The album is available for download as well as via a new experimental website designed by Björn Flóki Björnsson. Check out the website HERE.

In addition to headlining massive sold-out shows, the band has gained prime slots at prestigious festivals such as Coachella, Ultra and Lollapalooza in the U.S.; Primavera in Spain, Pitchfork in Paris; Summer Sonic in Japan; and Big Day Out in Australia.

LGBTQ EQUALITY × CALIFORNIA

State of LGBTQ Equality in 57 California Cities Detailed in HRC’s 6th Edition of the Municipal Equality Index
Many municipalities extend vital protections to their LGBTQ citizens and visitors

Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, the educational arm of the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization, in partnership with the Equality Federation Institute, released its sixth annual Municipal Equality Index (MEI), assessing LGBTQ equality in 506 cities across the nation, including 57 in California.

The 2017 Municipal Equality Index, the only nationwide rating system of LGBTQ inclusion in municipal law and policy, shows that cities across the country, including in California, continue to take the lead in supporting LGBTQ people and workers — even in face of renewed attacks this year on the LGBTQ community by federal and state officials.

For LGBTQ Americans, legal protections and benefits vary widely depending on location — states and cities have markedly different laws governing discrimination. 20 states have non-discrimination laws that include protections for LGBTQ people in employment, and 19 states have laws that protect LGBTQ people from discrimination in places of public accommodation. But cities are leading the way: since the MEI’s debut in 2012, the number of cities earning perfect scores has increased more than sixfold, and today at least 24 million people live in cities that have more comprehensive, transgender-inclusive non-discrimination laws than their state.

The average score for cities in California is 76 out of 100 points, which falls above the national average of 57.

“This year’s MEI paints a vivid picture: cities big and small, in red and blue states alike, are continuing our progress toward full equality, regardless of the political drama unfolding in Washington, D.C., and in state legislatures across the country,” said HRC President Chad Griffin. “Today, the MEI serves as a vital tool for business leaders and municipal officials alike when it comes to economic development. CEOs know that in order to attract and retain the best employees, they must grow their companies in places that protect LGBTQ citizens from discrimination and actively open their doors to all communities. The MEI is the best tool to help these businesses make crucial evaluations about the welcoming — or unwelcoming — nature of towns and cities across the nation.”

“California is a national beacon of hope and LGBTQ equality in the era of Trump, something borne out by another year of perfect Municipal Equality Index Scores for the state’s biggest cities, including San Francisco, Los Angeles, Long Beach, San Jose and San Diego,” said Rick Zbur, executive director of Equality California. “Contributing to these successes, Equality California has been proud to endorse more winning candidates than ever in cities and towns across California over the last year. But scores in many areas, especially in the Central Valley and other inland areas, remain depressingly stagnant and low. Equality California is continuing to devote a significant amount of our focus to these regions, whose populations include some of the most marginalized members of California’s LGBTQ community.”

Since the MEI’s debut in 2012, the number of cities earning perfect scores has increased by more than sixfold, and today at least 24 million people live in cities that have more comprehensive, transgender-inclusive non-discrimination laws than their state.
Progress on transgender equality has been particularly noteworthy in cities across America this year, continuing a positive trend that the MEI has tracked — and encouraged — since 2012. Transgender-inclusive healthcare benefits are offered to employees of 111 municipalities this year — up from 86 in 2016, 66 in 2015 and just five in 2012. The MEI’s Issue Brief on Transgender-Inclusive Health Benefits is available here.

Other key findings from the 2017 Municipal Equality Index include:

  • 86 cities from states without comprehensive nondiscrimination laws protecting LGBTQ people scored above the overall nationwide average of 57 points. These cities averaged 84-point scores; 28 scored a perfect 100.
  • Cities continue to excel even in the absence of inclusive state laws: 41“All Star” cities in states lacking comprehensive non-discrimination laws scored above 85 points, up from 37 last year, 31 in 2016, 15 in 2014, eight in 2013, and just two in 2012.
  • The national city score average increased from 55 to 57 points. 68 cities scored 100 points; 25 percent scored over 79 points; 50 percent scored over 59 points; 25 percent scored less than 36; and 11 cities scored zero points.

The MEI rated 506 cities including the 50 state capitals, the 200 largest cities in the United States, the five largest cities or municipalities in each state, the cities home to the state’s two largest public universities, municipalities that have high proportions of same-sex couples and 98 cities selected by HRC and Equality Federation state group members and supporters. It assesses each city on 44 criteria covering citywide nondiscrimination protections, policies for municipal employees, city services, law enforcement, and city leadership’s relationship with the LGBTQ community. Starting in 2018, the MEI will introduce new criteria including protecting youth from “conversion therapy” and will deduct points for religious exemptions that allow discrimination by singling out LGBTQ people.

The full report, including detailed scorecards for every city, as well as a searchable database, is available online at www.hrc.org/mei.

The Human Rights Campaign Foundation is the educational arm of America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people. HRC envisions a world where LGBTQ people are embraced as full members of society at home, at work and in every community.
